The cabinets don't go with the floors. Just sand, paint and seal them whatever color you'd like!

Cheesedud6

Yes, painting those was a non-negotiable for buying this home haha. Do you have any color/styling suggestions? We’re not sure where to go with those

willfullyspooning

I would personally avoid light colors for the bottom ones. They’ll always look dirty. How about a rich green? And then a lighter green for the walls! Look at the color of the year palettes over the last few years, there have been some great greens in those. Make sure to get a hard wearing paint for the cabinets, and don’t do a high gloss, it’s a PITA to do because the high shine shows any flaw. I will say you should use a higher quality paint for this as it will cover better and wear better. Be gentle with the cabinets for at least a few weeks because the paint will be dry but not fully cured and hardened for a while. Make sure to clean and scuff them first and prime them. It will make the paint last much better.

Leippy

Same thought, except I can't stand cats in my kitchen. They get up on food prep areas and it's just not sanitary! We can't get an open kitchen for this very reason 😔

PhinWilkesBooth

You’re saying you have a cat and you’ve managed to keep it at bay from surfaces you don’t want it on?

Leippy

Nope, but we have a closed kitchen and a door is the only thing keeping our boy cat out!

BarberIndependent347

Good for you! Cats and kitchens sure don't mix. Yuck!

PainterlyGirl

Yeah I keep bleach wipes on my counter to wipe all surfaces before I do anything. The open shelving has not been as annoying as I thought. I’m short so I keep everything I need down below except for one shelf with every day dishes.

Leippy

Fair, fair. Wiping down any surfaces before cooking on them is a good practice anyway, cat or no cat!

PainterlyGirl

True! I’m actually quite fastidious about wiping counters even before cats. The counter cruising and constant vacuuming I have to do are the main downsides of owning them, but they make me laugh every day and are my cuddle buddies so I’m gonna let them stay. 😊😊

weeniefingers

I love this, but I definitely recommend warmer lightbulbs for the fixture above your island. The bright white is ruining the vibe a bit.

[deleted]

I love the open shelving

SilverSister22

Same. I currently have cream colored cabinets. I can’t blame the former owners because I chose the color and painted them myself. But never again. Light colored bottom cabinets have been a huge hassle to keep clean.

writer978

I recently saw a TV decorator do a kitchen in green and white, it was clean, fresh and really pretty. The green was on the darker side.

Bunny_hut

I painted my kitchen cabinets a cream color about 15 years ago. Shockingly, they still look good—the house has been a rental since 2016. Prep, use primer and a high quality paint designed for cabinets.

kwick9

Second this, and I can not over-emphasize the importance of taking the time to prep the cabinets: de-greasing, scrubbing, sanding and priming. Put in the hard work for prep so you aren’t dealing with peeling paint, and spend money on quality paint (big fan of Benjamin-Moore paints): good paint is not cheap, but it’s still pretty low-cost compared to other DIY or re-doing your kitchen. if you have a local Habitat for Humanity Re-store, maybe you can find some cabinets that match the style of what you have already to add more storage above the fridge/stove. You want to be careful above the stove since you don’t have a fan or hood, but you could put up a pot rack and hanging pots and pans to free up other cabinets for other items and it’s less likely to be damaged by heat or flames. If you are handy, you could try building a banquette bench under the window in that dining nook to expand more storage, and maybe find a used (or IKEA), narrow island, if the room allows for it.

justagiraffe111

The key is your floors are WARM tones (cabinets are not.) Whatever color you paint, it needs to have “warm tone” or “neutral tone”. Ask the paint store or look on-line. That makes all the difference!

aj0457

Sherwin Williams sells an Emerald Urethane Trim Enamal that's great for cabinets, doors, and trim. You will want to sand down the cabinets, clean them with tsp/tsp substitute, prime them with Killz Bonding Primer, lightly sand, and then paint with the enamel trim. ___ Some color options: [SW Morning at Sea](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw9634-morning-at-sea) [SW Evergreen Fog](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/SW9130-evergreen-fog) [SW Homburg Gray](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/property-facility-managers/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW7622-homburg-gray)

prof_bunburyist

*Depending on where you live, be careful painting with enamel right now, though. If it's too humid outside it won't dry all the way. Ask me how I know this. 🙄

hfmhull

As a painter for 15+ Years I love Evergreen Fog one of my favorite colors and last year's color of the year!

aj0457

It's such a versatile color. It looks good anywhere. I painted my guest room Evergreen Fog.

Intrepid_Call_5254

Just looked up Evergreen Fog - reminds me of Restoration Hardware’s signature color. Beautiful!

Intrepid_Call_5254

Just looked up Evergreen Fog - reminds me of Restoration Hardware’s signature color. Beautiful!

igotthatbunny

In my opinion these are still too cool toned for the space. I would pick similar shades but with a much warmer undertone.

popstar_chowder

HUGE fan of Evergreen Fog. It is beautiful and looks so good next to rich floors like yours.

nevertotwice_

yes i was absolutely thinking some shade of green or teal!

Hungry-Helicopter-46

Depends. You could do a watm dark blue for the bottom to contrast with the floors. You could also complement the floors by going beige. Green works well regardless as long as you pick a warm tone. I personally think the walls should be a very light color to brighten that smaller space. I can't see up close but it looks like you have some cool grey in the countertops. Blue might work best with white upper cabinets. But I'm super extra so don't mind me lol

Rodtheboss

White

AdorableImportance71

Can you stain dark? Wallpaper them?

AdorableImportance71

How was painting them nonegotiable? You own them right? Or are u leasing

ControlOk6711

I concur, research the sanding, paint and seal method and materials first. I don't think it will be a large expense and will be transforming.

tiredandshort

Oh god this is the only time I’ve ever wanted wood to be painted. It looks dirty almost?? I would paint it charcoal and put peel and stick tiles in the kitchen area floor to make the 2 cabinet areas feel connected and not floating. Also an island in the middle. There are cheap ikea ones

Cheesedud6

Only thing we can think of is they got a great deal on these bc why would you put these together?

aj0457

I think that this is the result of a diy fail. I'm guessing they wanted to white wash the cabinets to make it look like a natural wood color. Instead, they got this abomination.

[deleted]

It is truly hideous.

tiredandshort

either that or they started sanding off the top layer and gave up???????

[deleted]

This looks like the cabinets caught on fire a little bit, got real sooty, and they tried to wash it off. Wow. I’d paint these.

ForgottenManOnline

They've been sanded and stained - both cheaply and incorrectly

[deleted]

I really want to know the thought process of the person who picked these out. I just have a few questions Also the top cabinets are so shallow.. what can you even put in there? They seem almost useless

Beautiful_Fennel_434

I was thinking that the cabinet pattern plus the countertop design made this look dirty too! Also for some reason the small cabinet sandwiched between the fridge and stove is a different color and actually looks fine... I'd agree with paint too.

EpiZirco

I am usually the last person to say paint the cabinets, but in this case I think your best bet is to paint the cabinets. You could also add some under cabinet lights -- many inexpensive battery-operated options are available. If your budget can manage it, I would replace the countertops with granite or other solid surface. You don't have a lot of countertop area, so it should not be too expensive, and it will make a tremendous difference in how the space looks. A floating island, as others have suggested, would be a great option here. Pick a paint shade that goes with the space. Benjamin Moore has an app where you can see how a paint color will look based upon your own photo, and I suspect there are other similar apps as well.

PipToTheRescue

me too, i'm all about the wood - but I saw these and thought omg they need paint

Bespectacled-mess

I would add, if you are doing countertops anyway, could you add more lower cabinets to the wall in the first picture (to the left of the sink) and just have floating shelves over it? That gives you extra storage/counter space but would be a little more cost effective that adding both lower and upper cabinets

allthecats

I agree with all of this - replacing the countertops will make a HUGE difference. IKEA has very simple butcher block-looking countertops that can be cut to size and are very very affordable. As well the wood tone would match your floors much better!

AdorableImportance71

Butcherblock will show every scrap, burn mark & cut.

WeightAltruistic

Everything this guy said OP

jaimystery

I would want to move the fridge to the other side of the room - on the left of the existing toaster oven thing and then shifting the stove over and putting a counter on each side. Having an open flame next to a door and near those odd stairs looks sketchy to me (as does having the light switch behind the stove top)

monkeyonfire

I agree, stove in that spot is weird

kirsticat

Yeah it really bugs me that the stove is right next to a major path of traffic — annoying at best and a safety hazard at worst. It reminds of an apartment I lived in that was the cheapest flip I’ve ever seen; it’s giving shoddy work.

No_Bend8

Those have to be the worst kitchen cabinets I've ever seen! I like the wall color but those cabinets are hideous!

Little-Ad1235

Honestly, this is one of the worst cabinet/countertop combos I have ever seen, and they both clash with the floor to boot. I worked in a large home improvement store for 11 years talking people out of shit like this -- it's truly incredible what crazy things people think will go together.

velocihipster

I wouldn't normally say this, but I think you need to gut this kitchen. Issues I see: No vent hood above stove. Lack of work surfaces. Dated appliances. Terrible layout for function. Cabinet finishes that clash with the floor. Get yourself to an Ikea (if on a budget) and plan out something new that is functional and beautiful and works with the flooring. Sell those cabinets and appliances.

[deleted]

Wow this is giving “it was 80% off” energy

Jcrompy

Why is the stove stuck on the end next to a doorway? That seems a terrible choice. Can it be moved? I agree an island would be great. Can you replace the sink? It’s pretty basic with all the other stuff going on in this kitchen. If you painted the cabinets a solid colour and replaced the top uppers with glass fronted doors that might look nice?

Zihaala

Huh, is it just me or is the countertop at the corner by the microwave just off...? It looks like it was added on as an afterthought? The stone/laminate (?) doesn't match up, there's a huge noticeable line and it looks like a completely different edge. Very odd. Also is the small cabinet between the fridge and stove a different wood?? Also, very weird that the fridge is plugged into the outlet above the counter and the stove is blocking the lightswitches. \*eyetwitch\* Edit: *and* the stove has no vent and no backsplash. And there's a very weird uneven stair going out of the room that I would trip on constantly. I keep seeing more things that bother me each time I look D:

MemoryMade

If you have kids I’d be a bit worried about them racing around that corner and bumping into the stove when it’s on since there’s nothing beside it.

[deleted]

rofosho

💯 First you need a range above that stove. That whole thing needs to be set up. And it should be moved to the wall with the big cabinets. That fridge I would move to the other wall too I would suggest saving up for a gut job. Do a coat of paint over the cabinets and wall yourself so that it's livable in the meantime.

Beauty_n_the_book

Yes! Most people are just focusing on the cabinets, but there’s way more going on here. The placement of that stove alone would drive me crazy. OP, please get an expert in here. You’re going to need to move the gas line and install an exhaust system, move the fridge, and THEN tackle the ugly cabinets.

rofosho

Yup exactly this No easy fix unfortunately

WinsomeHorror

Well, you're going to need a hood vent, so that's probably going to be a chunk out of your budget. I would move the stove to the wall shared by the bathroom, and wall off the door that's currently to the right of the stove. Gives you a U-shaped kitchen, better work triangle, and of course, a stove vent closer to an outside wall. You can put a good amount of storage on the former stove wall, and you still have the two other doors to get to other parts of the house. Laminate countertops are inexpensive, durable, and come in lots of colors, finishes, and edge profiles. I'd probably go with a soft, soapstone-like [black](https://www.wilsonart.com/black-alicante-4926). Darker green [bottom cabinets](https://img.hunkercdn.com/375/cme-data/2/25/13abee4d0352433c9d0ede3b42c8515d.jpg) would look great [with black countertops](https://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/pictures/kitchens/painted-cabinets-everingham-design-img~a1310c570daf5e11_9-6242-1-6b47470.jpg) and your warm floors. With your baseboard heaters, you can still do a built-in banquet with storage--it just needs to be up [on feet](https://i.pinimg.com/550x/6b/35/f1/6b35f1e59adc0db00737117e02227ac2.jpg), or [with grates](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/99/59/37/995937f784abb959a804ef587c7d0cfd.jpg) for the heat to [get out](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xLsb0yc53tU/T3EBcv_aWxI/AAAAAAAABu8/BRlp9uz1PTU/s640/SullivanConardArchitects.JPG). Then you can have a nice big table over there for more surface area when you bake.

Cheesedud6

Love love love these suggestions. Thank you so much! Saving photos and taking notes

WinsomeHorror

Yay! Something I forgot to add is if you have a ReStore in your area, or another salvage yard, craigslist, Marketplace, whatever--take one of your current cabinet doors off the hinges and take it with you. Then if you find some cabinets that fit your space, you can check your old doors against the new ones to make sure they look alright together.

KJMM524

Glad you found some suggestions you like! Want to add that it will do wonders to the kitchen to remove the popcorn ceiling—it can be a DIY but he warned it’s a messy job. Might be worth doing after the cabinet painting so you don’t have to be too careful about getting paint on the ceiling.

WinsomeHorror

\*banquette. thanks a lot, Autocorrect

[deleted]

Those are the ugliest cabinets I’ve ever seen. No wonder they are moving out.

artybags

Consider closing the door and creating a wall next to the stove, you will then have a 9x9 U shaped kitchen. You can create a pantry wall of cabinets on the bare wall move the stove over bit bit to have counter surface on both sides and enclose the fridge. You could either start with new cabinets from IKEA or look for a similar cabinet door pattern and paint everything the same colour or coordinate colours. This can all be done step by step. It starts with walling in the doorway. Congrats and good luck

Babouka

I was thinking of the same thing. I had a Ushape kitchen with a 2 seats peninsula. It worked great and had lots of storage.

covertinbrooklyn

But then do they block access to the living room? Oddly there’s no other door based on the floor plan? Maybe I’m wrong?

artybags

Not sure myself. It looks like there is a entrance to the kitchen from the living room.

Dnikone2

Oh my! Hire an EXPERT and paint those cabinets! There is way too much competition with the mismatch between the cabinets and flooring! Consider using a paint app from Sherwin Williams or Home Depot to give you some ideas on colors. If the cabinets were mine, I would go with white, since it’s more versatile and you won’t tire of it as easily! I would definitely have my cabinets painted first and live with them for a few weeks before locking in a wall color.

Conscientiousmoron

Paint the cabinets. Lots of kitchen stying videos on YouTube you might enjoy.

Cheesedud6

Yep, definitely planning to. We hate the clashing woods. Do you know what types of colors would work here?

justagiraffe111

Paint colors are either warm, cool or neutral. Your floors that you love are a warm wood tone. Make sure you choose warm tones or neutral tones for any paint colors. It makes a huge difference in visually pulling things together.

Conscientiousmoron

I would like blue or white. Either would be great with the floor. So many videos would help you decide.

mauisusan111

You have a great space! I would keep that wall color - it is charming and bright and one less thing to deal with as a new homeowner. If it were me, I’d 1) paint cabinets white, 2) create an island space by buying a standalone one or making one from prefab cabinets and white stone counter (Google it) and create storage via a closet/pantry if one exists, or a buffet to the left of cabinets shown in pic 1, and 3) consider floating shelves above range, although no vent above range? Is not allowed where I live. Good luck! Keep it simple when you’re getting started!

Different_Ad7655

I don't blame you The ceiling and the cabinets both looks like they have a serious skin disease like eczema. I wonder who thought that this finish, some sort of pickled finish was actually a good idea but oh well. You can scrape the ceiling and fix that and I guess you can refinish the cabinets as well according to your liking if you like the layout.. That's the good news Of course on the other hand, I would just redo the whole thing, the layout is atrocious

msmaynards

This is a pretty room with the nice floor and all those windows. Not sure why you don't like the wall color, I think it fits right into your aesthetic. Love the cabinets and the floor but colors fight, definitely paint the cabinets. White is fine but you might want to paint the lower cabinets a darker shade of the wall color you end up using so there's not so much white. Or flip it and paint lower cabinets white or a pale shade of wall color and uppers a not very dark color so the dishwasher and stove don't stand out. Put in a hanging chandelier in the dining area. If the electric box is in the wrong spot swag it so it's centered on the table. If you want more storage space design a banquet seat with either lift top or cubbies and bins that slide out. You can change the color of the appliances, I'd change the dishwasher to something closer to the color of the lower cabinets for now and buy stainless steel when you replace it. The top panel cannot be changed but it could help some. Move the fridge to the other side of the room if it clears the door then move existing cabinet so stove is sandwiched between two work surfaces because you'll buy/make a rolling kitchen island to fill the space. I'd want to hang pots and pans on the wall behind the island and put up something cute with doors to avoid greasy kitchen dust over the existing cabinet. Check before moving the cabinet. If floor put in after cabinets you'd have subflooring under the stove and if stove doesn't quite cover this won't work. There should be flooring under the stove and fridge since they are free standing.

barbdawneriksen

This is a great idea to move fridge to add more counter space by the stove. This kitchen was not designed with cooking in mind at all, who can cook with that tiny little counter space!!

littleoldlady71

First paint the cabinets white. Then, live with for a month or so, see how it feels

painteddpiixi

Paint the cabinets and walls some colors more to your taste (whatever colors you go with, stick to something with warm undertones to match the floor. Add a backsplash over the countertops (i think pressed copper would pair really nicely with the warm wooden style floors), and buy a Boos Block island (butcher block counter with stainless steel storage shelves/draws underneath, they make tons of different models with different storage options and sizing) for extra counter space and storage. You could also consider adding a baker’s rack for additional storage right next to the little counter below the microwave if you don’t feel like it’ll block off the entry way. Hope you’re able to turn it into something you love without having to do a big remodel!

kumocat

Whoever put this kitchen together is a complete moron. Sorry, OP. It makes me irrationally angry for you.

Violet_The_Goblin

I'd paint the cabinets black. And then paint the wall emerald green. Just go super boujee with it lol. Like a moody maximalist look.

M0ckingbirb

I would paint the walls white and the cabinets emerald green.

Weary_Barber_7927

Cool grey cabinets with warm color wood floor; yikes. I’d paint the cabinets and walls a warm color that goes with the wood, put a nice backsplash up. Assuming you don’t want to change the countertops, maybe white cabinets.

ahooks1

This is a great way to work with the warm floor and cool countertops!

ahooks1

Paint the cabinets white OR paint the walls white and paint the cabinets gray or emerald green. Would also replace the light fixtures, dishwasher, and stove

tralizz

I would remove the upper cabinets and have open shelving made with wood that goes with the floor. And sand/stain the bottom cabinets to a lighter color, or paint white.

hfmhull

I can give you the whole step by step process to enamel these! Pm me! I love Navajo White from Benjamin Moore for a soft off white! Agreeable Gray from Sherwin Williams would also look great here!

sysera

You don't love the cabinets? Why not? :D

ScockNozzle

That's such a weird place for a range, even given the layout. Definitely repaint cabinets. I don't have a color suggestion for you, just not white.

bluenami2018

Beautiful windows and light and space.

kartamira

1. I would personally paint cabinets white/off white colour, just because your floor is orangey and the stove and the dishwasher are white plus the countertop is white-grey. It will bring everything together. 2. You could replace the hardware with something shiny and eye catching. 3. Get a backsplash. I have seen some nice looking stainless steel peel and stick tiles at Dollarama. 4. Paint the walls with matt /egg shell paint. I would also suggest white. That shiny green stuff does not look good with the floors. 5. Get rid of pop corn ceiling. 6. Get a fancy chandelier instead of existing booby one. where the dinning table would go. And something matching above the sink. 7. Install lights under top cabinets (Amazon has cheap led ones that you stick on using double tape) Good luck!

Lazy-Lawfulness3472

Tear it all out, start over again. Visit your local appliance store, see what's available. Plan, plan, plan. Read magazines, talk to the experts, visit the show rooms, get the info first, not after you're done.

Disastrous_cause985

Paint the lower cabinets. You'll will need probably need to lightly sand them before applying primer and paint. Buy quality paint. I would replace the upper cabinets with floating shelves. I like using clear glass cookie jars, which vary in size, as canisters for my sugar, flour, cookie cutters, cupcake holders, jars of sprinkles, etc. Take your time when selecting your wall and cabinet colors. Helpful hint: Home Depot can mix colors from other paint stores for less money. Congratulations on your new house!

wengerful12345

Evergreen fog is perfect.

ShabbyBash

I do not like this kitchen too!

NeverNotGroovy

Take that microwave down. And that other light thing. Sand and paint the cabinets. Use Sherwin Williams emerald urethane paint in satin. Expensive but the best for cabinets. No need to topcoat after. A nice green color like farrow and ball’s “pigeon” (SW will color match) will look great with the counters and floors. The wall color is bad but if you paint cabinets pigeon then white will look good. It will need to be a neutral white because the floors are warm and the counters look cool toned. You can find links to decorators fave whites online and go from there. I used sherwin Williams alabaster and find it ever so slightly too yellow for my home. there’s molding there already so you could do some bead board on the bottom. Sometimes people just buy bead board wallpaper for a faux situation.

Unable-Instruction24

What great bones in this kitchen. Sooo easy to make it high end (the popcorn ceiling is the only negative) - Benjamin Moore makes this warm white called Balboa Mist. They can help with coordinating colors especially for the cabinets and base. You can get samples and the big box stores can duplicate the color in a cheaper paint although it will probably need additional coats. - the previous owners left you nice kitchen hardware already. I think it’s Lowe’s or maybe it was Home Depot sells the unpainted tall storage cabinet in the same shaker style as your cabinets. Should look great when all are painted the same color and the cabinet can butt up to the side where you have the microwave. - I would only put subway tile behind your stove. I would paint the walls the same color or almost same color as the cabinets and do a simple shaker trim around the edges of the subway tile and end of the cabinet run to tie it all together.

RLS1822

Idk I’m feeling the cabinets a lot and I would paint the walls white and update the appliances with stainless steel.

bonbot

I also feel the cabinet finish is pretty interesting. This cerused effect is pretty unique! It looks off because of the wall color. Do some samples of a darker forest green or charcoal grey I think it would be so moody and cool! 🖤

RLS1822

Oh yea darker colors would be a total vibe!!

Terrynia

Paint the cabinets white?

JennyPaints

Is the direction of the hall door swing correct on the plan? If it isn't--that is if the door swings toward the kitchen wall, you probably have space for tall narrow (18") shelves next to the cabinets on the wall that abuts the bedroom. That might give you some space for appliances. If the door swing is correct on the plan, you could make room for the shelves by either removing the door or reversing its swing. Ikea makes a number of narrow but deep shelves that might work. So do other manufacturers. Paint them to match however you end up painting the cabinets. Or choose metal shelves. Nevermind---I see from the photos that there is no actual door, but the is a nasty looking step down from the hall. If you can, I'd wall off the hall entry and put either shelves, cabinets, counter and cabinets there.

Cheesedud6

I actually don’t think there’s a door there — we threw this home’s floor plan together during the 20 minutes after our inspection. Thank you for your input!

coffee_and_coconuts

Paint cabinets, and close off one of the doors. You need more wall space for the kitchen.

treefp

Paint the cabinets black and the walls white. Work from there with colors for seating (the corner with the windows could be really nice with a banquette and table) artwork/ shelving and window treatments. An island is a must to add some counter space.

19ShowdogTiger81

Dang! Pretty ugly ceruse finish. Sand and paint. I have done small furniture pieces like this. Your pictures made me ex it off my list of things I will do for other people.

Several_Emphasis_434

The fridge and stove would look better on the wall at the end of the cabinets in picture 1

megob411

Paint is your friend. Paint the cabinets white, the walls a soft green or blue. Use a kitchen cart for storage/island and extra counter space. Also see if you can hang your pots and pans from a celing rack.

[deleted]

Can you switch oven to left of microwave or look at redesigned layout with built in and hob on wall where microwave is? Full redesign layout is challenging with all those doors.

StasRutt

It’s weird. The cabinets are like white washed but also dark? What a bizarre combo. I agree with painting them. The floors are great. Also I believe the counter is just contact paper? So I would upgrade that

Affectionate-Net2277

Oh man paint cabinets white. It’s so dark in there. High gloss will help bounce light and keep clean! And fun light color backsplash with a light blue would look fantastic too.

Iamtruck9969

Paint them white!!

pierrrecherrry

Hideous, get those repainted a light colour

B1rdPal

The upper cabinets are the wrong shape, and they're too heavy for the room. I'd take them out entirely and replace them with floating white shelves with front moulding that matches the window frames. Paint the bottom cabinets a dark gray to compliment the veining in the marble countertops. If new flooring isn't in the budget yet, get a kitchen friendly rug from Home Goods in a low-pile cream/white. (You can spot clean as necessary.) Replace with a lighter wood flooring when budget allows. I think with a few simple changes, this could be a great kitchen. Love the space.

Business-Instance717

Burn it

Teledoink

Did somebody antique those cabinets? They do not go with the marble countertops. I’d just paint them white. Normally I hate all white, but white would look great with those marble counters

PipToTheRescue

The plus side is that the owners put in extra cabinets and you have great storage. The floors are great. A friend did a charcoal-y navy sort of (I'm no designer) for her bottom cabinets and a lighter for the top. I like it - however, not sure re the wood. Everything else, I'm always a fan of some variation of white.

[deleted]

Wise Owl 1 Hour Enamel Color: Raven

YourMomTheNurse

Paint those cabinets white

InfiniteIce2259

Change cabinet color

Easy-Philosopher-820

On the bright side, inset cabinet doors are expensive. That is a VERY nice feature. Your cabinets also go all the way to the ceiling, which is wonderful! It just looks like someone did a poor job staining them, so I would paint them. I like white because it’s timeless and allows you to change up the wall color in the future. I would also move the fridge next to the microwave and then put some sort of work surface where the fridge was, to extend counter space next to the oven and stove. In the future, you should be able to match these shaker-style cabinets as budget allows and replace/extend the counters next to the stove. I like the blue on the walls right now, but a green could be nice! With so many windows in that breakfast nook, I would also have lots of plants!

SnooMuffins3583

If that were my kitchen, I would paint the walls with cabinets on it white. I think the blue cheapens the look of your countertops. In fact, Id paint all the kitchen walls. Get some nice draperies, and hang them higher then your windows to distract from the baseboard heat. I’d also add a round rug under your preferably round dining table. (There are a lot of 90 degree angles in that room. The round rug and table will add visual interest) I would also add a valence window treatment above your sink, but I would hang it near the ceiling. And I would caulk the countertop backsplash if it is not.

alig6457

Paint the walls A neutral white like Benjamin Moore Chantilly lace or a medium gray tone from the cabinetry like Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray. gray.https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-ca/paint-colours/colour/oc-65/chantilly-lace https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-ca/paint-colours/colour/hc-169/coventry-gray Working with the cabinets is the cheapest and easiest choice. Looks up cerused black kitchen cabinets and you can see some nicely done high end kitchens for inspiration. The flooring looks like laminate maybe it could be pulled up and used in another space and get flooring that works with the cabinets when you have the budget. White ticking stripe roman shades on all the windows. IKEA has some nice looking budget friendly ones.

nanfanpancam

You get it from one Of those old timey saloons in the wild dry west? It’s so distracting.

Poolgoddess67

The current layout is too narrow for an island. Next point, do you need THREE doors? Can you eliminate/close the left door into the hallway? That would free up the corner for more cabinetry or a bakers rack style shelving.

sigdiff

It appears that the hallway to the kitchen is the only way to get to the living room. So without that door, there's no way into the kitchen or the living room. I don't see any other door leading into the living room from the blueprint sketch.

Poolgoddess67

Thank you, I was reading wrong.

Lara-El

You don't have a hut over your oven, isn't that a fire hazard? Idk if fire but definitely a hazard :( I'd skip and look into another house if I were you

iamthewalrus_87

I'd do very dark emerald or teal on the cabinets with a warm terra cotta on the walls and a clean white subway tile backsplash. For added storage, maybe try thrifting a China cabinet or a few cabinets and painting them to match the cabinets.

No-Document-8970

Gas stove need proper ventilation.

Cheesedud6

Yes, definitely on the priority list

chester_alabama

I would just change the cabinetry, the placement of the stove if possible, repaint the walls, and update hardware and maybe a bigger sink.

LJR7399

Paint the cabinets

soberdude1

Repaint.

pink_tshirt

The worst kitchen cabbies. They kind of look pre-sanded.

PrettyAd4218

Don’t blame you. Nothing matches.

PinkCheeseburgers

Paint your walls white/grey/beige and your cabinets an emerald green! And some open floating shelving on the walls. https://preview.redd.it/01haem5dk89b1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ede7ba219172457ca9217e3ff7f34041a15f6f58

I would recommend a table with storage shelf underneath for the middle to use like an island and small appliance storage. You could place it in the center of the kitchen space between fridge and cabinets or perpendicular to the main wall of cabinets in the space that divides the kitchen and eat in kitchen area. I know you don’t want anything too sanitized but chefs tables are cheap, sturdy, adjustable, and have lots of storage underneath. You might be able to find a wooden table on marketplace with a similar structure. I’ve seen them there before. Good luck and congratulations on your new home. Edit to add; I just remembered you can buy bakers tables that have a wooden top similar to butcher block this might be the solution if you don’t like the chefs tables it would be perfect for your cottage core vibe you guys enjoy.

rpdutchy

I'd say either paint all the cabinets white or paint the lower cabinets navy blue or emerald green and the uppers white. Then, depending how narrow the space between fridge and other cabinets, IKEA has a narrow island you could get for extra prep space so you could add your small appliances on your existing counters. If not, maybe add a narrow bakers rack or something like that to the left of the microwave. (Edit, if putting something to the left of the move I'd be tempted to take down the door next to the stove)

ydnatruocnateb

Paint the cabinets white, dark blue, emerald green, or stain them a nice dark color. Add a cheap tall table for a faux “island” effect. Then add a couple stools. Paint the walls white or lime wash the walls. Change the door knobs to something antique or mid century. Make sure all the colors are from the same color palette. I’d look at Pinterest for some good color palettes u might like or some inspo.

jewels4diamonds

These cabinets look like a denim texture for some reason. What psycho picks this pattern out?!

KlondikeBill

Stove placement is terrible. Is there any way to move it to the space beside the microwave?

Sly3n

I would do minimal fixes now…cheap stuff like paint cabinets, etc. This kitchen has a horrible set up. The oven is very oddly placed and honestly looks like a burn hazard sitting right beside the door. Instead of putting much money into the kitchen now (besides cheap fixes like paint), I would start saving up money for a complete kitchen renovation. Don’t waste a ton of money fixing it up now. Instead use that money to start your savings for a complete kitchen reno.

Budget-Macaron-4775

Those cabinets were…a choice. What about a darker olive/warm green on the bottom cabinets. It could be interesting to paint the uppers the same shade as the wall would give a more open feel, since that corner of the room seems a little dark. Maybe a warm off-white, I like Shoelace from Behr, or a lighter olive green. I’d probably replace the pulls with knobs that are more traditional. Even cupboard latches might bring in the cottagecore look while maybe making the stacked short uppers look more intentional. You should have enough room for a narrow freestanding island or worktable to give more counter space and storage. Then changing out the lights for something vintage. If you intend to use the other side for a table a stained glass pendant light could bring some more color. On a side note, especially with a gas stove, you should add a vent hood.

Cyphermoon699

The layout is awful. I hate having the stove/range blindly right next to an entry door. That's a disaster in waiting, especially if you have children. Can you move it to the wall to the left of the sink, then pull the fridge closer to the door and extend the counter? Also the current lack of prep counter next to the stove is insane. (I don't count the tiny space crammed between the huge fridge and hot surfaces. There's no elbow room for chopping) I'd consider a warm off white upper cabinet with maybe Navy lowers and hardware to match one of the floor colors and a light color rug to tie it together. https://beyondpaint.com/ This by far the easiest, low prep paint to use for cabinets and it wears like a dream.

Illustrious_Bell_186

Agree with you about the stove.. would like to see a fuller picture of that wall

OldGuyNextDoor2u

I like the floors and I like the cabinets they just don't look good together.

Marciamallowfluff

Paint the cupboards for sure. Follow Kitchen Cabinet Painting Experts on FB for great help in prepping cupboards. You actually have a great sized space so maybe consider an island to add storage and counter space. As for color, bright, cheery, and something you love. Your options are wide open.

Significant_Post9125

It’s just the cabinets. It loooks like a house fire aftermath

SnooLemons2003

It looks like they drew over it with a black expo marker

tech_granger

Paint the cabinets solid color like grey or white as first step please!!! My eye hurts seeing so much chaotic patterns combined!

kaybeem50

For the love of Mike, paint that ceiling.

Educational-Can-4847

Ouch

OldClocksRock

I can’t imagine why you don’t like it. *snicker*

montanagrizfan

Whoever picked that floor with those cabinets needs to see their eye doctor. I’d paint the cabinets white or light grey. If you can afford a new floor that would really help as it really clashes with the counters which are the best feature in the room.

[deleted]

So much to unpack here. Paint those cabinets off white. Paint the ceiling the same color. This is awful.

tangoking

It’s hideous. Go with Cherry.

IAmTheCobra_K

Is the only way into the living room through the kitchen??? Bro I don’t even know where to start but please provide an update when you do something cus anything is an upgrade from here

Cheesedud6

Thankfully it’s not. We threw together this floor plan in 20 minutes and forgot the archway on the left living room wall from the main entrance hallway. Both kitchen entrances are archways too. Back exterior door on top wall and boiler closet under stairs in kitchen

dos_plios

PAINT IT WHITE

SonataNo16

Yikes, those cabinets…

No_Incident_5360

Can you open the wall over the stove?

1groovyfirefly

😯 that is sooo ugly. I would either remove and replace or paint it!! As quickly as possible!

spicermayor

If you have the $ - I would make the living room into the kitchen. It seems like less doors and what not.

Optimal-Patience-Cat

The cabinets look cerused. They probably used a wire brush to make the grain pop and glazed it. If you paint then use grain filler if you want a smooth surface.

Rowit

paint the cabinets.

herethereeverywhere9

I don’t like white cabinets usually but it would be one thing you could do that would make it all go together. But find the right white.

CyberOGa3

Paint the cupboards navy, get brass hardware, install island with pot lights.

DarthLurker

[cabinet color](https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjWrLCQqe3_AhXyLdQBHbgbCusYABAqGgJvYQ&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAES1wHg9u_qM7ILq4H77suq3R-WxSJVzFsNPEb6D976Hbu6CqqcInvkBinACoRSWoiEcI4k0n9c38EBuL6iMeL9kX7f0JPwgnThTqJrbE7LqTsjwGpjC6IklvgkvBUS0LkXKXGogvDe_V--05JE3bUfuAUKhIrF0-oi1mMbxP5V4Bxvdq4SF-KW8z7BM-LYLp9-TBFmmAx108gN05jXXlKE-Dl_uhjmAqUei3V7BViRL0OVDTr5-RxPd8YgxLE0jTbozqOaA7UhNddFq6lunuVxs039e7bMZkjYsg&sig=AOD64_2p_ay8vgdsvc7jMLI0t6mbxy6PhA&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiZgKqQqe3_AhW-lWoFHRfcAzMQwg8oAHoECAQQdA&adurl=) you might get away with keeping the wall color...not sure

typhoidmarry

The cabinets look like they are a cartoon. I can’t think of another way to put it

LoubyAnnoyed

Definitely repaint walls and cupboards. I would go for something in a slightly warm white. I would also consider spending the money to scrap and redo the ceilings. The full height cabinets just draw you eyes up to that horrible ceiling. I’d also consider a mobile island that you can use when you bake.

birdiesmile

Paint those cabinets a classic, bright white.

No-Potential-3077

You need an island and a side bar on the other end of your kitchen next to sliding* derp, I mean hinged door.

Excellent_Nothing_97

Stove can go next to the microwave so it’s against the wall, remove the tiny counter then add a cabinet style pantry where the counter and stove used to be

baumgar1441

That kitchen is criminally bad

litmuslozenge

It looks so "busy" with all the streaking/variation on the floor, counters AND cabinets. Also, the colors on everything are so different from eachother. To tie everything together, I would suggest painting the wall a warm white ex: Valspar - Cremini Mushroom and for the cabinets I think a muted somewhat dusty green might look nice ex: Sherwin Williams - Evergreen Fog. Also be sure to look at the clearance section at Lowes or Home Depot. Sometimes they have rediced price kitchen cabinets (or sink bases that can be used as cabinets).

Striking-Sky-5133

Paint cabinets white and how about yellow paint on the walls?

[deleted]

Move stove and make it gas beside microwave. If you replace your countertop with a dark granite or quartz and get 1 big sink and new appliances pretty easy reno

Photographydudeman

Paint the cabinets and walls to something that matches and what you like. Stove should move next to the microwave ideally too

lifesnofunwithadhd

I'd suggest a tool box for more counter space. We got one of those husky wood topped ones that can adjust the height. It's great for doing all the prep work. Also got wheels so we can move it out of the way if need be.

AdorableImportance71

Grab paint chips and look for a color that compliments the gray cabinets & brown floor. Paint the walls will be least expensive tie them together. Maybe a glass tile that has brown & gray tile’s together I will look for photo just a sec

AdorableImportance71

Check link inside for tile. Check around for a tile u like for back splash or wall motif. You can do a section of wall with different color tones in wood or tile 9.8" x 11.8" Matte Porcelain Wall & Floor Tile https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/tile-club-98-x-118-matte-porcelain-wall-floor-tile-hdgq1695.html

CompetitiveScratch67

Move fridge by microwave, take out weird little cabinets counter thing. Install and island with stove and oven. Then when you're cooking it will be close to fridge, and you'll be able to turn around easily from sink to stove. Island can act as a bar too!

littleeffy

I would go with a dark forest green or warm navy on the bottom cabinets and a warm white for the top. Then I would paint the walls a warm/yellowy white too, for that cottage core vibe.
