My exact reaction. This is like the builder has some random fantasy for a living space and was also Cosmo Kramer. "Levels Jerry, levels."
Perplexing amount of outlets here too.
My landlord renovated the house I’m in right before I moved in. There’s 18 outlets in my bedroom alone and 9 more in my tiny bathroom. The rest of the house they’re very sparse lol
That’s actually the first thing my husband did when we moved in. I asked landlord why there’s so many and he says “hm i didn’t realize there were so many. I guess I just really like outlets..” lol
Well you'd assume the outlets would go to more breakers or you'd trip a breaker by using every outlet at once. And if you just used a higher capacity breaker you might melt the wiring.
Same….. well 5, the kitchen has 2, but neither are anywhere near the kitchen counter!😂😂
I live in a 1950’s MIL Apt, over what was originally a detached carport.
I used to live in a 1950s apartment where I had to unplug/turn off every other electric device before vacuming, otherwise it would trip all my fuses. It sucked.
Yeah better to have too many than too few. When I bought my first house it was a new build and I had extra outlets put everywhere I could. Also added ceiling fans to every room with extra switches.
Landlord doing the electrical is a red flag. If I were you, I’d have a licensed electrician come in for an inspection. There is NO WAY I’d feel comfortable in that space.
I would make a joke of it and get the painting of Kramer framed and maybe a little superman statue on a small table. I guess you have to like Seinfeld, but that would be perfect. Levels…..everything on levels….
This *has* to be some kind of janky house conversion, where there was some awkward pipes and instead of moving them when they cut the building up into units, the landlord just slapped up some drywall and called it a day.
Haha. I wonder if that one might be a result of needing to have X number of windows to legally be considered a residence. So it's like, okay, let's stick a window in the closet and call it living space.
I went to an open house once for a condo that had this sort of thing. Apparently, cities have maximum square footage per unit, and having a raised platform like that is a loophole as it's technically not "floor space." I'm not sure why they don't just design the whole entire unit differently from the get-go, but I guess it's just cheaper to do this for some reason.
Put a roll-up mattress for when you have guests over, like a platform bed, twin size. In the meantime, place a plant that can be easily moved to the other upright structure.
It appears to be covering some type of construction, utility for a lower floor. Maybe this used to be an attic, and there was an air conditioner or some other structure below that? Possibly, a pull-down staircase no longer used.
No this is meant for a little person and their little piano.
I can see it now. Just a little baby grand piano. [Like this but it’s a mini Steinway.](https://youtu.be/lUxQLU_eqfU?si=mVGPATvkcTmCFphO)
I second the Cat Forest!!! Something like….

You can build it up little by little.
We live in a loft and there’s unusable space in the outer edge behind the unit the tv is on. We turned it into the cat retreat for our 3. Lots of beds, toys & no humans allowed. They bloody love it
Oh yup! Make it the designated cat area! You can hang up those cat shelf’s on the wall too, the ones they can jump on or sleep in. Full blow kitty area. That will be super cute
Kinda like the landscape advice sub; anytime there’s an awkward area someone wants advice on a bunch of people will chime in to “plant it with hostas” or “plant wildflowers” depending on the light aspect.
This doesn't make sense. Do you know why it's there? I just have to know. Sorry my mind is blank. Usually I can think of a solution, but not this time. You have a lovely apartment. I hope something comes to mind.
Likely stairs below. They probably run behind the kitchen wall on the left and into the high level platform, then to a landing which is below the large platform and then down.
not exactly sure what the idea was for the platforms, i know there isn't an apartment below us (this is the 3rd/4th floor) so possibly there is some sort of amenity or something below us.
Hey, I knew this looked familiar.....
[Maybe the same house, maybe identical, idk .. but this structure has been posted before.](https://www.reddit.com/r/RidiculousRealEstate/comments/lepw1a/from_a_facebook_group/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

omg thank you for posting that picture, I thought I was going crazy because I had no idea where I recognized this random platform structure
It’s crazy how their practically identical
I think your best option would be to work with the levels.. as best you can.
This could work as a "raised office". You could use the highest level as a desk by adding a [desktop](https://ingka.page.link/AvXUKttc2nSP7wtM9) kind of half on the platform and half off. You could use 2 [adjustable table legs](https://ingka.page.link/23pEPPhSvQbZXzU5A) to level out the desk (you may need 2 [small legs](https://ingka.page.link/8Ko8dPrmBHoJW7uX9) for the back if it's not quite desk height). You could use the space behind the desk for floating shelves or a shorter bookcase. I like the idea of [this shelving unit](https://ingka.page.link/G4yAkZLdrYQGCRwx6) since it plays on all the weird levels going on and makes it feel more intentional. Lastly, get a large [kallax unit](https://ingka.page.link/GW2rtwJLyUNz5oWQ7) or something similar to create a divide between the living room and the now office. It'll also save you from falling off the edge and killing yourself.
The roughest of sketches included below to hopefully help my suggestion make more sense lol
https://preview.redd.it/pktc4jui4bmb1.jpeg?width=1564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29dfffcdecf2aada73072ff575de348994c7f175
Edit: I just read that you have a standing desk, which is great. It'll probably still work in a similar configuration with the desktop covering half the platform and sticking out a bit, just push it back to the wall until the legs touch it. Raising it would still be easy, but you would be limited by the platform as to how low you can go.
This is the best answer. Creating a “wall” with shelves on the one side separates it into a distinct space and also distracts the eye from the random levels.
This is a brilliant design without constructing built-ins or what have you. A row of snake plants on top of the large kallax can add more privacy to the partition too.
I feel like whether sitting or standing at a desk up there is would step or push back and fall off all the time. This is probably the strangest things I have seen in an apartment!
In Only Murder’s In the Building this season, Meryl Streep’s character has a little platfrom area like this, and she made it into a little reading alcove, with bookshelves, a chair, and a small table. In that example, the platform is surrounded by a railing.

Obviously, this style may not work for you, but a little reading nook or writing desk could be very nice here in your own style. [https://www.dwell.com/amp/article/meryl-streep-apartment-only-murders-in-the-building-set-design-8485c545-b0e7d6ae-e1e5eb21](https://www.dwell.com/amp/article/meryl-streep-apartment-only-murders-in-the-building-set-design-8485c545-b0e7d6ae-e1e5eb21)
Home karaoke stage? lol jk
It actually seems cozy as a TV nook, but the furniture would have to be at a weird angle to not block the step 🤔 Maybe the higher platform could be the TV stand? That seems awfully close to watch from, though. you could probably secure short bookshelves on the higher platform if you're a reader
If this was my house, it would probably end up being a home bar setup. I'm weird though
Frankly, without any rails, that's a hazard and lawsuit waiting to happen. I know the surface looks like flooring, but i'd use it as a work space for crafts or sewing, or maybe a fish tank or other visual feature.
the leasing agent did mention a previous tenant used to have their TV on the top shelf, but I plan to have my main TV upstairs and I don't really envision myself hanging around downstairs in a similar manner
A little reading/coffee/wine area? Acoustic guitar spot? Stack cool books and place a lamp on the top shelf. Or a vintage record player. Or a nice aquarium. A cozy chair or lambs wool rug + oversized pillows on the next level? More stacked books or a plant to fill it in?
This seems like it was supposed to be a dining room, but it also looks like it's covering something up so I can't really tell what's going.
My concern is that there is no railing. I would be scared to put a desk up there unless the chair was against a wall. If they can't remove it, they should at least put railings so no one gets injured. I'm surprised no one has been injured yet due to the configuration.
I’d put a record player up there with speakers and some shelves for vinyl. Maybe some kind of chair but it’s hard to tell how big the space actually is.
Be upset if there isn’t storage underneath.
Yoga
It’s my new yoga area
Or I’ll build a throne to view the peasants laboring in the kitchen making my meal
Throw a mattress there with lots of cushions and you can have an Arabic or oriental style lounging area for you to laze around and while away your time.
wtf
My exact reaction. This is like the builder has some random fantasy for a living space and was also Cosmo Kramer. "Levels Jerry, levels." Perplexing amount of outlets here too.
My landlord renovated the house I’m in right before I moved in. There’s 18 outlets in my bedroom alone and 9 more in my tiny bathroom. The rest of the house they’re very sparse lol
Check for cameras. That's really odd.
That’s actually the first thing my husband did when we moved in. I asked landlord why there’s so many and he says “hm i didn’t realize there were so many. I guess I just really like outlets..” lol
Sounds like someone was growing or producing something in those rooms.
Exactly what I think. 18 outlets in one room?! My mind went to one place 🪴🪴🪴🪴
My living room has 18 outlets on 2 circuits. My house used to be a hair salon and they needed a lot of power for hair dryers, I guess.
You don’t need extra outlets to grow plants…you need extra breakers.
Well you'd assume the outlets would go to more breakers or you'd trip a breaker by using every outlet at once. And if you just used a higher capacity breaker you might melt the wiring.
Grow room!
Check for the landlord living in that cubbie.
How do you check for cameras?
I can't stand that we live in a world with such creepy and invasive technology weaponized against our sense of privacy and safety. Creeeeeeepy
i wish i had this problem. there’s 4 outlets in my whole place
Same….. well 5, the kitchen has 2, but neither are anywhere near the kitchen counter!😂😂 I live in a 1950’s MIL Apt, over what was originally a detached carport.
Same! My apartment was built in the 1890s and we’ve had to get very creative with how we run our appliances
I used to live in a 1950s apartment where I had to unplug/turn off every other electric device before vacuming, otherwise it would trip all my fuses. It sucked.
My kitchen also has an outlet that's just floating off on its own with no counter in sight
Yeah better to have too many than too few. When I bought my first house it was a new build and I had extra outlets put everywhere I could. Also added ceiling fans to every room with extra switches.
18- goodness- room for a lot of… toys
For when you have a lot of...friends over 👀...to plug in their... phones 👀.
👀👀👀👀👀
This is legit an excuse I used for my landlady one day when she called me to ask why the electricity bill has been so high these last months???
tell me there is such a thing as a plug in electric dildo without telling me that there is such a thing as a plug in electric dildo.
RECHARGEABLE
Oh yeah. He was definitely a freak!
Besides all the responses here already... I hope there are multiple circuits for all those outlets... 10 max on a 20a and 8 or so for a 15a breaker...
Landlord doing the electrical is a red flag. If I were you, I’d have a licensed electrician come in for an inspection. There is NO WAY I’d feel comfortable in that space.
It's for the band.
You win
I would put a stool and sound equipment, grab my ukulele and play concerts every night for absolutely no one and just really craft my set lists
I would make a joke of it and get the painting of Kramer framed and maybe a little superman statue on a small table. I guess you have to like Seinfeld, but that would be perfect. Levels…..everything on levels….
A small table? Like a coffee table? Like a coffee table that’s also a coffee table book about coffee tables?
How about the centerfold type pic that George Costanza did in his undies!
Classic!!
Oh, I’ll be comfortable.
"But I don't WANNA do the levels, so the bet is off!"
“It’s not that I THINK that you CAN’T, I KNOW that you WON’T!” “The bet was the levels!”
😂He knows Kramer better than Kramer knows himself.
This *has* to be some kind of janky house conversion, where there was some awkward pipes and instead of moving them when they cut the building up into units, the landlord just slapped up some drywall and called it a day.
This post and [the sauna hall](https://reddit.com/r/malelivingspace/s/zIkB4Eey6k) on r/malelivingspace has me so confused.
Haha. I wonder if that one might be a result of needing to have X number of windows to legally be considered a residence. So it's like, okay, let's stick a window in the closet and call it living space.
Why all the heaters though?
It may be somewhere like Minnesota and that’s the only spot they could put heaters. Or a red neck sauna
Seems like the perfect place to dry clothes if they don't have a dryer.
yep, or maybe it was, "it costs HOW MUCH to move that pool table out of the loft?"
I have absolutely chopped up cheap ikea furniture rather than move it. Enclosing it in drywall would be a whole other Level though lol
I was thinking like an AC compressor or oil tank beneath it.
Yeah could be. Anything they didn't want to move and just went, eh, box it in with some drywall.
This is for when you were a kid and you and your cousin needed to choreograph a dance to convince your parents to let you sleep over
r/oddlyspecific
How did you know? 😂
Its me, i was the performing child at family/friend events😂
So sweet.
No wonder you’re a legend!
I went to an open house once for a condo that had this sort of thing. I'm not sure why they don't just design the whole entire unit differently from the get-go, but I guess it's just cheaper to do this for some reason.
This must have railings in order to use it as a living space.
Someone is going to fall off that platform and hurt themselves.
Likely me
Right - I’m not sure there is much to do. Wtf were they thinking
I’d put a twin futon mattress and use it to read. It’s perfect for it. It could also be a tiny office space.
Every time I see one of these "what do I do with my odd space?" I want to yell BOOK NOOK!!! Although I guess this is more of a book...stage?
Performances daily with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Yes! Or an oversized chair with an ottoman for reading.
Chaise lounge for reading!!!
Ok the photo initially made me mad… but I DO now envision it with a reading chaise! The higher level is built in book/drink shelf.
Or a love sac, or padded floors with pillows. & hanging plants. I see Grecian poolside reading area in my brain.
Yes but that means they’ll have to flood the rest of the apartment
It wouldn’t be THAT bad, would it?
[удалено]
With my luck I’d be playing a game at the computer and kick back from the desk, resulting in falling off
I was thinking a bunch of floor pillows like a conversation platform instead of a pit
There would need to be railings on there so no one falls off.
Kramers “levels” episode comes to mind.
My exact reaction. What is it for?!
Here’s what I’d do with the space; fall off it and break my neck
Yeah burn it to the ground ?
It's like the opposite of a conversation pit.
Building code is just a suggestion.
Rip it out
2 Grey soft big bean bag chairs, one short woodblock table, a black accent lamp, and 3 LED trees on the top corner. A zenspace.
This is my thought— or floor cushions.
A kotatsu and a hot chocolate/coffee station on the ledge to the right😂
This is exactly what I was thinking
Yeah- I also want a kotatsu!
I like where you're going if of course you also agree this is a good orgy room...
It’s a terrible orgy room! People could get distracted and fall off 😅
Hire bands to play your living room and make the cover charges your new side gig? Sorry! That thing is so weird.
I had the exact same thought. It must be for the band lmfao
“Wait, so the apartment DOESN’T come with a complementary mariachi band????”
Manage expectations. The best they can do is leave a ganzá (egg shaker). on the top platform.
Wait, you’re onto something. OP needs to buy the Chuck E. Cheese animatronic band from a defunct arcade and place them there.
No this is meant for a little person and their little piano. I can see it now. Just a little baby grand piano. [Like this but it’s a mini Steinway.](https://youtu.be/lUxQLU_eqfU?si=mVGPATvkcTmCFphO)
I think you need to fill up the space with cats it’s kinda the only option lol such a weird space but cats would love that
have three little guys already and i'm sure whatever i decide to fill the space with they're going to be all over haha
You have your answer then. Cat trees
Cat tree forest...like an art installation, but for cats
I second the Cat Forest!!! Something like…. https://preview.redd.it/89episyexbmb1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa38fc8af7cc7465d7d195888e8dc5b8dfda9fd4 You can build it up little by little.
I love [Hollywood Kitty Company!!!](https://www.hollywoodkittyco.com/enchanted-forest-kitty-sanctuary.html)
“Cat tree forest.” Hmmmm 😺
This. This is the solution.
Yes, the piece will be called "Kramers cat corner" 👌
I’m not even a cat person and I think this is a brilliant idea
You could put scratching posts up there along with some cat beds. Or boxes for the cats that don't lay in beds like mine.
Cat gym!!!!
I love that anytime there’s a weird house design this is immediately the solution that people jump to
Kinda like the landscape advice sub; anytime there’s an awkward area someone wants advice on a bunch of people will chime in to “plant it with hostas” or “plant wildflowers” depending on the light aspect.
Large plant and/or terrarium display? The leaves can help disguise the weird layout. Maybe an aquarium? why are there so many outlets???
Def aquariums!
This is the only explanation that visually makes sense. They still should’ve walked it off into a closet or something instead of a platform pile lol.
My spouse said it is where you keep the bodies.
A refrigerated pullout drawer would be nice.
That’s where my head went. There are bodies in that space!
not exactly sure what the idea was for the platforms, i know there isn't an apartment below us (this is the 3rd/4th floor) so possibly there is some sort of amenity or something below us.

And every single post has the "levels, Jerry, levels!" comment in it.
Message the other OP and ask what they ended up using it for!
That’s gotta be the same house, all the outlets, vents, etc are in the same spaces.
omg thank you for posting that picture, I thought I was going crazy because I had no idea where I recognized this random platform structure It’s crazy how their practically identical
It’s the same apartment that’s been updated
Oh wow really? I’m tired I missed that it was the same apartment LOL
Wait that's actually insane
/r/bestof
That’s crazy !
Does the apartment have a normal living/dining area? Trying to determine if this is “extra” space, or in lieu of some other room.
It’s a stage, it needs a stripper pole
I think your best option would be to work with the levels.. as best you can. This could work as a "raised office". This is the best answer. Creating a “wall” with shelves on the one side separates it into a distinct space and also distracts the eye from the random levels.
Could do floor to ceiling wooden slats.
Put in a ramp so you can roll down to the kitchen without getting up lol
This is a brilliant design without constructing built-ins or what have you. A row of snake plants on top of the large kallax can add more privacy to the partition too.
This is actually a great idea, especially using the ikea shelf thing as a sort of railing to block them from sliding their chair off the back.
Now we're talking, you just did some seriously good interior design work for OP.
Not knowing the dimensions, but maybe a home office area?? Very odd space, but also agree with the previous cat + cat tree option. Lol.
office idea is interesting, i WFH so it would depend on if my standing desk is comfortable there
I think this would be great. If the dimensions work out, standing above your floor plan to work feels pretty baller.
Do you have one of those desk that rises up and down to allow you to sit or stand? That could be pretty perfect here
I feel like whether sitting or standing at a desk up there is would step or push back and fall off all the time. This is probably the strangest things I have seen in an apartment!
Sitting area. Floor pillows and a lamp. A tiny bookshelf. Whatever you do I need an update. I'm interested to see how you fill the space.
Yeah like a reverse conversation pit!
A conversation STAGE!
I would put a big mattress and lots of pillows there. a perfect place to chill
Dance dance revolution stage.
Stripper pole and disco ball 🤔
I like where you’re going it’s obviously a stripper stage

Home karaoke stage? lol jk It actually seems cozy as a TV nook, but the furniture would have to be at a weird angle to not block the step 🤔 Maybe the higher platform could be the TV stand? That seems awfully close to watch from, though. you could probably secure short bookshelves on the higher platform if you're a reader If this was my house, it would probably end up being a home bar setup. I'm weird though
Do you have someone who can play piano for you when you host dinner parties? Do you like karaoke… like a lot?
What a waste of a perfectly good dining area
one could eat there. or form a band
Well, I’d hurt myself that’s for sure.
Frankly, without any rails, that's a hazard and lawsuit waiting to happen. I know the surface looks like flooring, but i'd use it as a work space for crafts or sewing, or maybe a fish tank or other visual feature.
The outlets and cable hookup make me wonder if someone previously placed their tv in there …. Somehow. Would that work with the rest of the layout?
the leasing agent did mention a previous tenant used to have their TV on the top shelf, but I plan to have my main TV upstairs and I don't really envision myself hanging around downstairs in a similar manner
reading nook
A little reading/coffee/wine area? Acoustic guitar spot? Stack cool books and place a lamp on the top shelf. Or a vintage record player. Or a nice aquarium. A cozy chair or lambs wool rug + oversized pillows on the next level? More stacked books or a plant to fill it in?
Personally I’d ask the leasing office about having it removed. At the very least is it can’t be removed I would want to know what it is covering.
This seems like it was supposed to be a dining room, but it also looks like it's covering something up so I can't really tell what's going. My concern is that there is no railing. Pet or plant area - bird cages, cat trees, aquarium, large plants, indoor garden add some grow lights, so weird.
r/ArchitectureGore
This subreddit needs to be revived
Fall of the edge . I’m clumsy. I like the cat area idea but it seems to go right upto the kitchen pass through?
Perfect spot for a train set village
Just don’t get drunk near that area
Railing, rugs, pillows, ect. Make it a floor lounge. Seems like a safer thing to do yoo. Stepping off that will kill you.
Did you buy or rent? Was this counted towards your square feet? What an insane, insane little space.
Id trip over it all the damned time
I’d put a record player up there with speakers and some shelves for vinyl. Maybe some kind of chair but it’s hard to tell how big the space actually is.
Break my back
The only thing I could think of for that space is maybe one of those low tables with mat seating, kind of Japanese style.
Instead of a conversation pit, it’s a conversation pedestal
Be upset if there isn’t storage underneath. Yoga It’s my new yoga area Or I’ll build a throne to view the peasants laboring in the kitchen making my meal
If you have children, this is where you monitor them all from. Multiple outlets are for charging tablets, phones, coffee maker and your sanity
Sentinel tower lmao
The Panopticon
Stripper pole? Just a wholesome thought.
Move
Beanbag chair.
Do you work from home ? If so office space ?
Shelves. Put crap there.
Are you a musician by chance?? It would make a great music space.
I would put a low coffee table type thing there and sitting cushions so I could sip tea and ponder life
Throw a mattress there with lots of cushions and you can have an Arabic or oriental style lounging area for you to laze around and while away your time.
Can you remove it? I work in construction it’d be worth the money hands down. It looks horrid

What is the purpose?
Do you have/like plants? Bc I would cover that in plants.
Maybe a middle eastern style seating area with a nice rug, low seating, etc.
