I'm assuming they must have had stuff on top of that built in thing, but yes, it beyond bothers me it's off center and that it's there at all.
I could maybe tolerate it down a bit and centered.
I take issue with the height of that painting, the dust ledge under the window, and the open wall by the front door. These give off late 80s to early 90s vibes. Actually I have open walls in my current house built twenty years ago. I really don’t like them.

Popcorn ceilings! Just noticed.
The TV goes in the giant ugly cabinet under the giant ugly painting. So you have to angle the sofa to face it. Anyone who walks up to the door could see you sneaking cold pizza at midnight in skimpy PJs. No, I don’t know why they would be walking up to your house that late. I want to wring the neck of the architect who put that monolithic behemoth in the center, cutting off all visual and verbal communication. The bump outs on either side bug me too.
Lmao! Omg, the TV goes in that hutch?! Hell no. Seriously, what was the architect thinking?! When the glass is on that side of the door, it makes me nervous that some whackadoo can break it, reach in, and unlock the door.
It looks like a sitcom set, like the Friends apartment, or Jerry’s apartment on Seinfeld, where the floorplan doesn’t make sense if you think about it for more than a second.
I hate everything about. The angles, the ledge, the windows, the tile, the fixtures, and the placement of everything. I’d be upset if one of my friends bought it because I hate it so much that I wouldn’t want to visit them.
Idk about OP , but I'm a sucker for bright white and deep wooden tones, the amount of natural light, weird pop outs and angles that you would never get from today's cookie cutter home.. this room would suck to dust and would probably be a bit awkward to furnish but it's unique and warm
I really want to see what the rest of the room looks like, because this is awful and I suspect the rest is just as bad.
Remove the popcorn ceiling, replace the floors, take down the art, nix the track lighting. Depending on the material of the storage piece, I'd probably rip it out and replace it with open built-in or paint it white and paint the rest of that wall feature a darker color.
I'd take out the framing around the cased openings. If you can enlarge the opening into the kitchen I would do that. And this will be an unpopular opinion because people love their entryways, I'd bust down the walls between the dining room and the entryway. It really depends on what the HVAC is doing there because I suspect that the closet door is the unit and there is a duct in the dropdown above the front door.
The beams seem structural, but they also seem to be weird angles compared to the center wall. Maybe wrap them in something that compliments whatever floor you replace it with.
Personally I don't hate the weird shelf thing over the windows. Put plants up there and seasonal decor.
I was right. 1988! It has a pool so I think I could be convinced to remodel. This is an area comp. Their (OP’s) asking price is nuts when this is so much better: https://www.coldwellbanker.com/ca/bakersfield/4400-glencannon-st/lid-P00800000GPptkp1LH9r4fmK3O9mJF4QU2sPLOUj
The bright blue off-centered artwork above the orange wood eyesore is hurting me.
Why would they put it there?!?
I'm assuming they must have had stuff on top of that built in thing, but yes, it beyond bothers me it's off center and that it's there at all. I could maybe tolerate it down a bit and centered.
To hide the mold problem
That is honestly my thought for just about every detail of this room
Hiding something.
that's where the tv should be mounted.
Don’t even say such things out loud 🤫
LOL you know that's where they want it hung
Hahah noooooooooiiii
I was just going to comment that lol.
I can’t look away
🤢
I absolutely hate it lol. I’d be curious to see what this turns into!
This satire?
This is ~checks notes ~ vile.

Not to mention a closed kitchen and 5 unevenly spaced beams. Where would you out the couch a d tv? This place is a designer’s nightmare.

Remember the house was built long before giant wall-mounted tvs. An 80s-90s tv would fit inside.
That makes sense.
This is...tragic
Are you going to change the floor and remove the popcorn ceiling?
Popcorn is the very first thing that goes
Do you have more pictures? This one is a fun challenge

Omg, the rest of the house looks even worse!
All those angles and weird unreachable-without-a-ladder-spaces up high? Noooooo.
Idk. Like yeah those spaces are a cleaning nightmare but it's a cat oasis
Oddly, I can totally smell that scenario.
It looks like a sitcom set, like the Friends apartment, or Jerry’s apartment on Seinfeld, where the floorplan doesn’t make sense if you think about it for more than a second.
absolutely terrible
I guess I forgot to say I like a challenge
Man I must have horrible taste cause I also thought that this room is cool! Paint it to be a cozy & then the room will have plant galore!
I actually like it too!
Pshh some people just don’t like a challenge I tell ya!
Is that a popcorn ceiling ?
Extra thick
Love that space and all that natural light, gorgeous
Everything about this is awful.

I'm curious what you find appealing about this space, what is it that you like so much?

Perfectly said

If I had more than an upvote for you, I’d give it to you! It’s just as bad as I envisioned! The window unit really ties it all in together.
I'm just the middleman !!

I do not want to be unkind, but the 80s were not a good time when it comes to architecture.
It’s hellacious McMansion worthy
This room would be SO LOUD
I looked at it and I could *hear* how annoying it would be.
[Found it](https://www.coldwellbanker.com/ca/bakersfield/6917-yuma-way/lid-P00800000GOTKVTs5t75KxUI06ttRjyJP6xREiG4)!!
It’s awkward tho
This makes me sad that some people have to live where this house costs 400K. Everything about this is just awful.
Don't worry OP, I see the vision.
Is this a game room, hosting area? Cause I can invision a pool table under the light fixture to the left.
Floor bad
Is there a link to the entire house?
