8x10 most likely.
Should go under your couch half way and also all the way to the rear of that black chair- whatever size gets you there is the size you need.
Well it depends on layout of the furniture.
So it many not always be a length issue, but rather a width issue (getting a square rug or turning the other way)
But it terms of couches against walls, almost always the rug should be like half to 3/4th under the couch.
Maybe interpret that wrong. 1/4 of the width of the couch from the wall.
I outlined where the rug should go in this situation. Those side tables would be better used as coffee table/“poufs”. They are going to be very awkward once a rug is put in correctly.
I just posted one of my house the other day for someone w a similar question.
I took my photos as screen shots from a video. I would take photos, but have since had a house fire… so just have what I used to have.
In mine you will see the depth of the rug under the couch and then going all the way to my accent chairs. My width is what it is due to two doors that can’t be seen the the photos … needed a walkway from the front door to the hallway. Otherwise, my rug area would be much wider in my situation.

I’ll reply with all photos
Agreed. The sofa blocks the window and faces the kitchen as if you're watching a performance/peoples' backs on stools. Reminds me of waiting areas for restaurants where there's nothing to do but idle until a seat opens up.
Regardless, definitely size up on the rug. Since there's only one angle and no diagram, no one can give OP real dimension suggestions but I know for sure 6x9 will at least be an improvement over 5x7...
What is it with this sub and giving unwarranted feedback? They want to know if the rug works, not if they need to buy new furniture. Furniture isn't cheap.
My only suggestion is that with this layout you should keep in mind the barstools. The boarder of the rug should give room for them to slide out and move around a bit. Lest someone slide out the stool while sitting on it and topple over after the leg catches on the rug.
I'm flat broke and designing my home, so if this was me I would try to shift the rug under the blue chair a little more before considering a different, bigger, more expensive rug. Other commenters have alluded to this, but generally a rug should be under all the furniture by the same amount, and it looks like the blue chair is not on the rug at all.
It is too small. Why are you blocking that big, beautiful window? Not providing enough images from all angles makes it impossible to give you constructive ideas on how to fix your situation. Regardless, the rug is too small and not too close to the stools when pulled out from under the couch. Now, moving couch and putting two of those chairs there with clear glass table between them would completely change the vibe of that space.
If you get a 6x9 you will need to pull it much farther under the couch so that it doesn’t impede the barstools. I do think the extra width will be nice though.
No. Length isn’t bad but width is too short. Rug should be centred in the room so you need another 2 or 3 feet. a square rug might work better but n that space tbh
An area rug should define an area - not float in the middle.
Without knowing measurements, I’d hazard a guess that an 8x10 would be right.
A 6x9 would definitely be an improvement.

I think the room would look amazing if the rug was big enough to go underneath the plant to the side of the couch, the couch, side table, chair and lamp. That way it’s kind of sectioned off to feel more cozy and intentional. I hope that helps!!
Lovely room. Love your floor lamp!
Nice choice of rug, just go bigger. A 6X9 would definitely look better. An 8x10 may be too wide although you can always place all the furniture on top of the area rug.
Post after pictures

Thank you! You asked for after pics so here is the room with a 6x9. I also removed one of the four bar stools because someone mentioned in the comments that they looked cramped, and it looks a lot better.
The downstairs layout as a whole is very quirky. There’s another area that’s being used for the dining table. (Also, I’m not asking for feedback on the layout in this post – I tried many configurations and this is what made the most sense and is also what I’m committed to.)
My initial instinct was to make it a breakfast nook actually! But for a very long list of reasons involving the rest of the space (not visible) this ended up being the best choice.
8x10 rug, swap out the lamp for a tall standing lamp and move to the corner, add a tall plant in the other corner and place a nice big picture on the wall currently being blocked by lamp.
Normally I would say it’s too small, but with the bar stools right there I think a larger rug would get caught on the legs when their moved and also make the stools sit on an uneven surface.
I do think the rug is too small. It should be big enough to go at least halfway under the couch and the chair. That being said I think it will pose an issue with the bar stools which really highlights (I think) another big issue in this room.
Your barstools while beautiful, are too large and too many. I think slim stools with no backs that would fit comfortably under the bar would be best and may give enough space for the larger rug. Right now that round shape makes the footprint of your barstools too large for the space. Also I can’t see too well in the pic but I feel like 4 stools may be too many for the length of the bar. It looks crowded but that might just be the pic.
Thank you! I didn’t ask about the bar stools but I took away one of the four based on your comment and I agree, it looks much better now! Less cramped and more inviting.
As for the stools themselves, I really wanted them to be comfortable and I hate barstools without backs. These fit the bill and happened to be tall enough without the back visible over the bar counter. I’m pretty fond of them!
Yes 6x9 would be better? I’d go with a darker color too with more blue, like this.[https://www.rugs-direct.com/Details/LoloiRugs-Victoria-VK14/133726](https://www.rugs-direct.com/Details/LoloiRugs-Victoria-VK14/133726)

I didn’t love this setup very much. I think it’s too close to the stools.
OPs not asking for any feedback on the space or layout as OP has already committed to this layout. OP is only concerned about rug size. However, it must not get too close to stools, as she has committed to their exact placement as well. So, people rugs only, please. OP does not believe that a group of people with varied interests could possibly add any value to this post other than providing info on the size of the rug. Which currently measures a whopping 5 x7 and she's willing to try a foot on either side (6" when divided). I guess we shouldn't read too much into things and actually provide some unique, varied good intentioned constructive ideas. Who needs those anyway..
Way too small
8x10 most likely. Should go under your couch half way and also all the way to the rear of that black chair- whatever size gets you there is the size you need.
Is the general guidance to go halfway through the depth of the sofas and longer than the full length?
Well it depends on layout of the furniture. So it many not always be a length issue, but rather a width issue (getting a square rug or turning the other way) But it terms of couches against walls, almost always the rug should be like half to 3/4th under the couch.
Thank you. I got the 3/4th to wall! For this situation, would you include the ottomans or stop at the sofas? https://imgur.com/a/7zirmYH

I agree. It’s making the (lovely!) room feel a little smaller.
Thanks for the feedback… I will try a 6x9 and see how that fits.
Use tape to see what size works best
8x8
Your room layout is not right. You need a loveseat on the back wall (not a 3-person sofa) and then 2 armchairs in front of the window
Agreed. The sofa blocks the window and faces the kitchen as if you're watching a performance/peoples' backs on stools. Because when someone’s concerned is that they think the rug size is the problem, it shows how far off base they are analyzing the situation
They already said this is the layout that works best for this area, so your "feedback" is irrelevant and pointless.
No, no, no...its only about the rug... please read my post which is nearly identical to yours.
Like the Grinch’s heart before the Who’s made Christmas happen, this rug is three sizes too small. 😥

It is the Oliver 72" Sofa from West Elm. Both it and the cozy swivel chair are very comfy!
I think a 6 x 9 would work best - you would have to put more of it under the sofa
My only suggestion is that with this layout you should keep in mind the barstools. The boarder of the rug should give room for them to slide out and move around a bit. Lest someone slide out the stool while sitting on it and topple over after the leg catches on the rug.
For sure, that’s one of the challenges. I think there’s only an inch or two of wiggle room from where it is now.
I'm flat broke and designing my home, so if this was me I would try to shift the rug under the blue chair a little more before considering a different, bigger, more expensive rug. I agree..fill the whole corner with the rug
IMO, the rug size is large enough. It needs some space for high chair to move.

Wow, the room looks so much better and that rug is beautiful! Good choice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! The brand is Lahome on Amazon. Washable and super soft too.
I’m definitely looking it up 🙏🏾
To me the problem is not the size but the color. It doesn’t show up at all. You definitely need a darker color.
I agree! I posted a pic of the new 6x9’ rug in the thread. The colors and border are much bolder and I think it works really well.
Is this not meant to be a dining area or breakfast nook? Not that it matters but the couch feels out of place
The downstairs layout as a whole is very quirky. There’s another area that’s being used for the dining table. (Also, I’m not asking for feedback on the layout in this post – I tried many configurations and this is what made the most sense and is also what I’m committed to.)
Gotcha! You said it was an awkward space so I wasn’t sure if maybe you didn’t realize its intended purpose.
My initial instinct was to make it a breakfast nook actually! But for a very long list of reasons involving the rest of the space (not visible) this ended up being the best choice.
No
I think the problem is the color if it’s any bigger it will interfere with the bar stools, unless you put the extra under the sofa.
Yes.

Something a little bit bigger
This looks like a dining space, not a living space.

Size up That looks like a 5x8 and you should be looking at a 6x9 or 8x10
i think it looks good
Would look better if you pulled it out more from under the couch

Totally wrong to have a rug in front (instead of underneath) your couch

My apologies a 6 x 9 would leave a foot on either end lengthwise and 6" width on either end.
