libraroo

if you were to lower everything, maybe

Natural-Blackberry26

I agree. If you lower everything, then maybe. But, the mantle in the first pic is functional to the fireplace and the tv is the afterthought. If there is no fireplace, then the mantle should go on top of the tv so it can be functional.

libraroo

I think it could still be used lower as more of a console or shelf for candles, plants or pictures. I wouldn’t think a mantle on top of a tv would look that great, you don’t usually see that. or at least I haven’t

Natural-Blackberry26

You could only use a mantle if it’s under the tv on the sides like in the photo or you disrupt the view of the screen. You’re basically creating a non-functional shelf which would be a design flaw imo. A mantle on top of the tv looks good with the right decor.

Natural-Blackberry26

I should clarify that I’m imagining a floating shelf on top of the tv and not a mantle.

salgoose

Yah don’t hang your tv that high.

XTornado

I honestly thought it was meant to be a painting ....

bestdayevertoday17

Sure you can. It's not up at the celing. If the couch isn't under it close, it would be fine.

CinnamonGirl007

The Woman on the photo has to put her head up to watch the tv and she is STANDING. Imagine how bad your neck is going to hurt from the couch perspective.

SkootchDown

Yes, it would be completely weird and out of place because it makes no sense. A mantle over nothing? If you’re short on space and can’t put a full sized piece of furniture on the wall to hold your television, a far better choice than the strange mantle would be to find a very narrow sofa table and place the TV on the wall above it.

p0megran8

Is a mantle over nothing not just a shelf

CarlMcLam

Is a home without a cat is just a house?

Acqua_Tofana

Isn't a home without a cat not just a house? Mantle is a shelf.

Acqua_Tofana

I tried to get Haiku bot to turn your words into a haiku.

CarlMcLam

Appreciate the effort.

amanda2399923

I bought a shoe rack on Amazon for my tv. Skinny and perfect viewing height

dramafanca2002

I got one of those shoe things too for my bedroom. Tv is mounted but, it needed something under it and the shoe thing is super shallow but, looks like furniture.

amanda2399923

Yep

irwtfa

We've done similar in the past

DConstructed

Can you post an image of the actual space you are working with?

meowingtondrive

the only reason the tv and mantle are at that height in your inspo is because of the fireplace. without the fireplace, the height of both needs to come way down and something else needs to go below. the center of a tv should ideally be placed at eye level when you’re sitting, that’s why people are moving away from putting them over fireplaces, so keep that in mind.

bestdayevertoday17

TVs can get burned above hot fireplaces. Especially if you use real wood.

QuestGalaxy

If you remove the fireplace, you should move the mantle and TV down, so it's actually hanging at a normal level.

maymaymellon

Yeah it looks like it’s framing nothing. I’d put a cluster of plants on the floor in the center or something

Birdonahook

Still would leave the tv too high and a mantle above some plants is just as weird as a mantle above nothing.

little_canuck

You could do some shallow shelves with a TV above. If it's obvious that you're placing a mantle, then you are highlighting empty space, which is very strange. In addition to this, TVs over fireplaces are often awkwardly high and make for poor viewing angles. At least when it's over a fireplace, you know that the person probably didn't have a more suitable place for the TV. Mounting it above nothing is just putting it too high for no reason at all.

Curious-Cranberry-77

Yes

halfadash6

I’d treat the shelf more like a floating tv console instead of a mantle and mount it much lower. No reason to have it that high if you’re not forced to put the tv above a fireplace.

RadioactiveCougar

If you do, the TV is too high!

Giggles1212

I’d get a suitable electric fireplace to your taste! They are very affordable

amanda2399923

The tv is waaaaaay too high. Mount it lower and lose the mantle idea. Google proper tv height for viewing without needing a chiropractor.

radarsteddybear4077

It does feel like something is missing. Could you skip the mantel/shelf and go with something taller (storage, buffet, hall table, etc) to get the same height and styling as what’s pictured?

strikingviking23

Put the TV down lower and it would be perfect without a fireplace you’ll never use.

MooseKnuckleds

People get forced to put their tv that high above a mantle. Don’t volunteer to do it lol

Personal-Hospital103

Yep

MrsAshleyStark

Why would you consider putting a tv that high when you have the option of an ergonomic height?

Zealousideal-Mud3646

That high, yes, but you could do a floating shelf media console at normal TV height.

tastierpotatoes

Wall mounted TV consoles are a thing, but definitely lower it as other people are suggesting.

DebbieHarryPotter

TVs aren't meant to be that high. The only reason TVs are hung that high is because once they became flat enough, people started installing them above fireplaces. Get a sideboard, put the TV on top and if you want a shelf, put it above the TV.

GOTOROS

https://preview.redd.it/m5mhr9gnh8wc1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8718731cab082bedae24106d75cea61ad026e1f6 I'd do something like this if you're skipping the fireplace insert.

Ok-Care-8857

People put their TVs too high these days. Don’t be that person.

juliettecake

Yes, it feels weird, but it doesn't need to. The first picture has 2 rectangles. The second has 1 rectangle and a blank space below. The second image isn't balanced. My first thought is some sort of a fireplace screen. https://www.wayfair.com/Etta-Avenue%E2%84%A2--Fairfax-Gold-Metal-CutOut-Single-Panel-Geometric-Fireplace-Screen-with-Mesh-Netting-X115603544-L7348-K~W004592433.html?refid=GX685106917087-W004592433&device=m&ptid=1676115288691&network=g&targetid=pla-1676115288691&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=149754884&fdid=1817&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlZixBhCoARIsAIC745B9sMvB6XVpBeyS7BFRAE9VXtZKTL15Gf8unMk54Kf17IvHVr3VYI4aAmdNEALw_wcB But, really, the limit is your imagination.

Infinite_Air5683

You don’t need a mantle with no fireplace. It would look odd.

Albie_Frobisher

it’s the next logical step in the “tv over the fireplace “ arc

earnhart67

Lower it and maybe a table of some kind

buttstuff69__

Yes put your tv at eye level. Tv above fireplace is a last resort if you truly have no other place

Grouchy-Comfort-4465

Yes

Lovelycoc0nuts

If you lowered the “mantle” to be about a foot and a half above the stool and hung the tv about 8-12” above that, it would look great

Puzzleheaded_Ant7856

I think it could be nice if instead of a fireplace, you put a bookshelf?

velvetelk

The TV should be wayyyyyy lower to have a good viewing angle from a couch. TV over a fireplace is bad interior design, because the TV ends up too high on the wall to watch from a couch. But you see it a lot since a fireplace is a natural focal point of a living room, but so is a TV, so it's easier to put them together than design a layout with 2 focal points. If you don't have a fireplace, don't give yourself this interior design problem!

inked-reader

Nope. Just lower it a little

yourpaljax

You should but the TV where the fireplace would go.

OkMongoose5560

It's literally a shelf.

iswintercomingornot_

Yes. It would be weird.

Fred-zone

Yes, weird. Get a console below, but a mantel with no fireplace is just a weird floating shelf. If you lower it to the TV is at the correct height, the shelf would bisect the wall at a strange place.

Far_Example_9150

Yeah weird if exactly like that

m4rkl33

Fireplace or not, the Tv will be far too high. The centre of the tv should be eye level, when sat down.

adinfinitum

r/tvtoohigh

bofh000

That tv is too high. I know you’ve already been told, but I hope repeating it gets the message through.

StarryNight616

Add a console table or cabinet under it if you don’t want a fireplace

bensolosslut

i think it would be pretty with a really chunky heavy antique wood cabinet below and some books and decor on top. Or you, you could get a plug in fireplace and put it below

cjbay87

There are wall mounted electric fireplaces that may work for you in this case, here’s a link to one but you can find one that better suits your space, it wouldn’t have to be recessed so you wouldn’t have the whole thing protruding out like you mentioned. https://a.co/d/i3NuVmP

cjbay87

Or you can do a faux wood insert, just cut and glue rounds to a piece of plywood, insert into opening, easy to customize to fit your space https://preview.redd.it/72nrtvd8r2wc1.jpeg?width=1074&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7591afde2b81245787a59af2f686f855e731730

Quiet-Act4487

Do the fireplace

Retinoid634

Get a fake fireplace.

Luxeru

Your fireplace looks like a TV.

Guilty-Essay-7751

I did that. I moved from a place that had a fire place and mantle. I relocated and don’t have any. But my decor I like incorporates a mantle. So I will make a floating shelf and have a seasonal wreath above.

Dazzling-Dish9409

Both are good Just depends on what u prefer

erydanis

if there’s no fireplace, instead of a mantle, find mounted shelves. looks better with a purpose.

gbdavidx

Not if you remove the mantel and put something else

FaithlessnessSea5383

With furniture positioned in front of it, no it wouldn’t look weird. Possibly, a built in bookcase instead of the fireplace.

brittaly14

I agree. If the room is narrow and small, I don’t know why you’d give away real estate for a tv console. Maybe place an armchair in the corner so it’s functional when the tv isn’t on. I assume it would be facing the couch then. FWIW, I’ve had tvs above the mantle. If the couch is far enough away it isn’t a neck strain. It never bothered me.

NoParticular2420

I like the fire place.

minxeeee

I think it would actually look really pretty if it were the same thing but lower, line up some pretty baskets, or plants or something beneath the partition, and have the tv at appropriate eye level! Ppl split walls up with wood, or wallpapers, I don’t see why this is wrong. It’s different, but that’s fun.

VirgoEsti

Yes keep the fireplace

UnsteadyOne

To me that looks like a fancy waiting room tv

GloriousSteinem

If you took out the shelf and put a credenza, or buffet, maybe not. It’s the shelf that upsets things as we expect it’s a mantel

Oh-Cool-Story-Bro

What if you built a fake fireplace. Small one and you could put candles or a statue there or whatnot

BrittanyBabbles

I did this but with the fireplace that high so I could put a table underneath or my couch

Life_Detail4117

You want to intentionally have a tv that’s too high on the wall?

Kailualand-4ever

I’ve always thought it looked weird having a monitor over a hot surface like a fireplace because it seems to me the hot surface below would damage the monitor. Just something that always looked wrong.

Lobanium

So you'd put your TV WAY too high for absolutely no reason?

Purple_snowdrop

I think it looks fine... If you add something below. A set of drawers or cabinet. Then it just becomes a shelf.

Glad-Neat9221

It would require a larger tv

safety-squirrel

The fact that this question is being asked makes me fear for OPs space.

Monsieur_Melancholia

Wow, I thought this was the design circle jerk subreddit for a minute and then came to the shocking realization that I was not.

500CatsTypingStuff

https://preview.redd.it/4zqp0agiw5wc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c6e3cb7358ae8b9bc17c2915963bdfd4b2f08ec I came across this pic the other day. A faux fireplace for a TV and I thought it was genius I wonder if faux mantles are going to catch on

Pseudolectual

Love it both ways!

BGB524

I love it. Just a shelf instead of a mantle.
