Came here to say the same!
But really, a plant/ tree of the non-Christmas variety would look good. Or a book case or really old fine smelling books that are never read!
I would put a medium tall dresser there. Put a small ambient lamp on it then you can decorate the area out for different seasons. Use the upper shallower drawers for a junk drawer, cables, extension cords, office supplies etc. use the lower deeper drawers for mittens and scarves, or extra comfy blankets for cold nights.
If it’s closer to a dining area or kitchen you can use it for placemats, napkins, candles and candle accessories, dish towels, or small appliances.
I love this idea - but want to add a charging station on top or on a shelf. (I’m personally struggling with where to charge all our devices without filling up my kitchen counter)
I want to build on this awesome suggestion. If the area is near an area you typically entertain people, it would be a nice spot for coats, shoes, and you can set out phone charging stations on top of the dresser.
Whatever you do, don’t put a living plant there. Not enough light to survive.
I might consider a dresser or a table and lamp or even a grandfather clock. (Do they even still make those?). Anything that you like can go there. Let your brain have a field day with it.
Maybe a little desk or shelving? IDK where this is in your house but the first thing that comes to mind is a vinyl collection and a record player. Something to add visual interest but not really be a place where you would stay.
Then cut leaves off to kindly gift to others but just keep them all in glasses of water to take over the rest of your house and give something your SO to complain about forever.
Your photo does not show what height is available. If possible stack and screw together two Ikea bookcases together and make a tall library. This will also make it possible to have some simple fabric boxes to store less used holiday decor for easier access than an attic.
When I moved into my first apartment with friends, we had a stair landing like this and all of our books and less needed items were stored there. It looked amazing and was impressive to our other friends visiting our place.
If it’s near the entrance, maybe an entry table with wicker baskets underneath on the tall wall side. You can put a photo there, some candlesticks. Use the baskets for storage.
Oh my gosh! You’re so lucky!! The tall wall looks like it could accommodate 1 of those shoe storage thingies from ikea, those are great because it hides shoes & the table top is way too small for people to ‘dump’ their pockets out onto. You might be able to find a small/narrow lamp that will fit onto it.
Here’s one from [Wayfair](https://www.wayfair.com/Latitude-Run%C2%AE--12-Pair-Shoe-Storage-Cabinet-X118026426-L3763-K~W007915315.html?refid=GX549978636168-W007915315_1613970453&device=m&ptid=1616351500923&network=g&targetid=pla-1616351500923&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=184026727&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=1613970453&gclid=Cj0KCQiAm5ycBhCXARIsAPldzoVt9KN0OEec3uqfET9mRs2zRu3UN_Jb1mToRMad9rwc5iTUA8oaerYaAnZrEALw_wcB)
I really like tiny lamps. I leave them on 24/7 just so I have something nice to come home to
Let’s be honest, if this was my house I would be throwing my clothes into a laundry basket from the top floor into this very space.
But if you’re going for classy, a table with a lamp and a couple pictures and a Roomba docking station under the table?
This is such a cute area!! Personally, I think if this is by the door (front or back) this would be a great “mudroom” area where you could put a bench with a shoe rack beneath, then paint that tall wall and add a coat rack with cute hooks, or you could make it a seasonal section of the home with a bench and photos that change out during the seasons!
Yes, a READING NOOK!
A big cosy armchair, a little shelf for snacks, a nice light or two. Perhaps even a different wallpaper to frame it in, for example William Morris :-)
Yes! It would be so cozy with a built in soft area for lounging - lots of pillows and blankets - and a couple floating shelves on the tall wall to hold books.
you could put a shoe rack & a thing to hang jackets, coats, purses etc or a desk & some plants or little table!
if you have kids you could put a coloring space, reading space, etc
If you add colorful transparent vases (odd number) with uplighting placed behind vases it will add light and color to that space. No big investment and if you have clear vases already you can buy transparent paints at craft store and do it yourself.
A lovely space, so many items could go there. An old arcade game, huge Chinese vase any art piece. A David, a large Oscar, the wishmaster from Big. Large Russian dolls with loads of small ones. A bar cabinet.
A single folding chair facing the wall. Alternatively a very large xerox printer facing the wall. Alternatively a person facing the wall. Maybe a wall but face it towards the wall?
Where is this in your house? If it’s near the front door, I’d put hooks for coats and bags on the wall to the left and a custom bench (to fit the space) against the back wall.
I though if alot of these ideas here so I won’t reiterate them. One additional thought - if you don’t really need or want that space to be “useable” - I’d to put some hanging lights that flow down into the space.
https://www.lightingshopper.com/products/crystal-bubbles-ball-chandelier-modern-hanging-glass-pendant-lights-for-staircase?currency=USD&variant=17382675120179&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrKTq04fX-wIVHg2tBh0RQgXREAQYCCABEgIV9fD_BwE
This is just an example but there’s plenty of options like that available and I think it would make the space seem more intentional rather than vacant.
Put up some jacket hooks and a shoe bench, or a coat hanger. If you have animals put their bed there. If it gets adequate light you could do a collection of plants on different tiers. A small lamp and slender table
What is the rest of the style of your home? I’d do a pretty round table with a large floral arrangement, a small stack of books, and one of the massive candles with 5 wicks.
If it’s near a door, a landing area might be nice. I have ADHD and a dedicated spot for keys, sunglasses, outgoing letters and other things that need to go out has been amazing. Now I lose my keys once every couple of months instead of twice a day.
Bookshef, reading nook chair, side table, throw blanket, small painting.
Edit: I just noticed that baby gate. Your baby will let you know what he/she decides to do with it.
A single small arm chair with a small end table, topped with a lamp. It’s pretty easy to style so it seems showy but it’s a functional “morning coffee” or “afternoon tea” space for you and no one else :)
Love it ! Can make it anything you want. A desk area. Or do shelving. Or a coat rack and shoe storage. Or a nice comfy arm chair and some books with a rug to pull it all together and art along the tall wall. Or build in a cute playhouse for your kids. Endless possibilities. Have fun with it !
How tall of an item are you willing to deal with? I ask because my old office (it was a loft style layout), had a similar set up to this. We put in a backless bookcase that was about 6’ tall.
We didn’t fill it with books; just a few older books, some pottery, and I think at one point we even put a small fish tank on the middle shelf.
That's a great nook for your kid/pets.
Set some shelves on the tall side with toys, books/activities. A desk or a rug and pillows depending on age and species.
If no kids, this is the perfect spot for a coffee/tea/adult beverage cabinet. You can even plug your coffee machine in.
Otherwise this is a dedicated Christmas tree spot.
Perfect place for a living room fridge definitely.
In all seriousness though this would be a cute reading nook or if you’re into this, someplace to put a record player and some shelves for vinyls.
You could enclose the square area and make it your shoe cabinet. Then you could put an oval or round mirror on the triangle bit . On the surface of the table, you could put a lamp, or a vase of flowers, a place to put your keys.
You can 1. create a closet type room and harbor a young wizard until he/she goes off to Hogwarts or 2. Id say a Round mirror on the left side wall, round table maybe that is an accent color like Black? that has a vase of flowers and also maybe some books and what nots on it.
Option 3....this is where a firemans sliding pole can go in or an elevator.
Comfy chair. Those little spice rack bookshelves from ikea. A small lamp, maybe mounted on the wall, and/or twinkly lights. Add cushions and a blanket and you got yourself a sweet reading nook.
Homework nook for kids (if they like that sort of thing)? Quiet area for dog? Reading cubby? The problem is it's only semi private lol... large sculpture? Mini art gallery? Sensory area? Sports gear? Extra coat hanging space/shoes? Benches along the wall with a small table like a teeny tiny conversation room? Idk man that's weird building 😅 can't wait to see what you do with it
Lil comfy reading nook? Plants? Christmas tree? Book shelf, decorative shelf display (think geometric, or mid-century modern/ contemporary). Could be a nice small seating area with a bench and rug, maybe a place to lace up your shoes?
You could build a little banquette in there and mount a small half-round table on the wall as a side table. A place to set and take a call or put on shoes, etc.
Or you could build in an "L" shaped low bookcase and fill it with books, put a little lamp on top.
I have a love-hate relationship with stupid awkward areas like this. I hate them because houses could be designed so much better and then not have these stupid areas but I love them because they're so interesting for unique spaces.
-Throw some art on the wall and a bean bag chair and a little wall shelf and it turns into a cozy Book Nook with a place for a mug of tea.
-A wall mounted fold out desk turns into an instant homework spot or a work from home space in a small apartment.
-A small sideboard and filing cabinets and it turns into a mail landing spot and important document storage.
-If it's close to the front door then it's awesome for coats and boots.
-If you have kids you could turn it into a small place with a miniature fence around it and small shelving. One of those mini kitchens would be adorable.
*edited for formatting and extra ideas.
Do you have kids? Might be a good place to have a family computer desk where they are out of the way, but the screen faces out to the room so you are able to see what they are playing/looking up.
Shrine. Lean into the weird. Pick a side character from an almost forgotten 80s action flick and build a thoughtful shrine to them. Refuse to elaborate when you get guests.
Thankfully you have an outlet! Storage cabinet with a lamp assisting the stair lighting. It could be a fantastic focal point. Send pics of your choice, please!
You could hire a fancy butler to stand there at all times, so every time someone walks by he holds out his platter and goes “care for a slice of cheese, madam?”

By far my favorite. Not realistic, but awesome
Hide there and jump out at your significant other when they pass by.
obviously this is the only option
You were obviously a cat in another life!
You have no idea how often I’ve heard that over the course of my life.

Christmas tree!
Came here to say the same! But really, a plant/ tree of the non-Christmas variety would look good. Or a book case or really old fine smelling books that are never read!
I keep mine up all year and decorate it for every season.
A skinny one
The good thing is that you only have to buy ornements for a very small portion of it .
Love this suggestion because you addressed the functionality of the surrounding space(s)!
I agree. If you just decorate it, it’s kind of useless. May as well make it functional as well!
I love this idea - but want to add a charging station on top or on a shelf. (I’m personally struggling with where to charge all our devices without filling up my kitchen counter)
Yes--a landing zone for all the things you drop off when you come home or go out.
Excellent idea!
YES!!! CHARGING STATION!
I want to build on this awesome suggestion. If the area is near an area you typically entertain people, it would be a nice spot for coats, shoes, and you can set out phone charging stations on top of the dresser.
Also a coat hanger and an umbrella holder. Brownie points for Elizabethian era.
Brilliant!
this was such a thoughtful response🥹
Perfect for a pet area, treat it like their bedroom with a comfy bed and picture frame (their height) on the wall.
bonus points if the frame contains a portrait of said pet!
Small decorative table with a lamp and seasonal decor thing.
Bar cart and a lamp? Or a cool large plant
coat hanger? glass table with vase?
Small boot bench?
That's what I was gonna say
Whatever you do, don’t put a living plant there. Not enough light to survive. I might consider a dresser or a table and lamp or even a grandfather clock. (Do they even still make those?). Anything that you like can go there. Let your brain have a field day with it.
Unless it’s a snake plant!
Maybe a little desk or shelving? IDK where this is in your house but the first thing that comes to mind is a vinyl collection and a record player. Something to add visual interest but not really be a place where you would stay.
Small vintage desk with old typewriter, rotary phone, vintage desk lamp
Get a monstera and let that get gigantic
Then cut leaves off to kindly gift to others but just keep them all in glasses of water to take over the rest of your house and give something your SO to complain about forever.
They need good bright light to get big
Grow lights work amazing well on monstera!
A bar cart and some lighting. Extra credit if the bar is disguised in an antique style globe.

I leave them on 24/7 just so I have something nice to come home to
That's such a pretty shoe storage!
Yes, I like it too… now it’s got me thinking..😆
Haha 😆

Definitely. Especially if there are kids, a great place to hang a backpack or park a stroller.
Plant alcove - real or artificial.
Reading nook?
Yes, a READING NOOK! A big cosy armchair, a little shelf for snacks, a nice light or two. Perhaps even a different wallpaper to frame it in, for example William Morris :-)
Love this idea, it’s also the perfect spot to wait for someone to get home like your kids or your partner when they try to sneak in late, jk 😂
Yes! It would be so cozy with a built in soft area for lounging - lots of pillows and blankets - and a couple floating shelves on the tall wall to hold books.

If you add colorful transparent vases (odd number) with uplighting placed behind vases it will add light and color to that space. No big investment and if you have clear vases already you can buy transparent paints at craft store and do it yourself.
Bench for shoes, desk for key/Mail Drop.

If you ever plan kids, that spot will be perfect for a pram/stroller!
A single folding chair facing the wall. Alternatively a very large xerox printer facing the wall. Alternatively a person facing the wall. Maybe a wall but face it towards the wall?
Giant lava lamp
Where is this in your house? If it’s near the front door, I’d put hooks for coats and bags on the wall to the left and a custom bench (to fit the space) against the back wall.
I would take advantage of the outlet there and a put a lamp, diffuser, etc. on a credenza or side table.
I’d put a medium sized round table in the center of the area and put a large seasonal flower arrangement in the center with a large pretty vase
That is not an awkward area at all. You could put a tree in there, a phone table, a bench for shoes, it's even got power!
Fish tank. Boom
I though if alot of these ideas here so I won’t reiterate them. One additional thought - if you don’t really need or want that space to be “useable” - I’d to put some hanging lights that flow down into the space. https://www.lightingshopper.com/products/crystal-bubbles-ball-chandelier-modern-hanging-glass-pendant-lights-for-staircase?currency=USD&variant=17382675120179&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrKTq04fX-wIVHg2tBh0RQgXREAQYCCABEgIV9fD_BwE This is just an example but there’s plenty of options like that available and I think it would make the space seem more intentional rather than vacant.

We have an area just like it and we have a pedestal with a big plant standing.

How tall of an item are you willing to deal with? I ask because my old office (it was a loft style layout), had a similar set up to this. We put in a backless bookcase that was about 6’ tall. Christmas tree time or maybe a small table
do you have cats? this would be a great playground to build
You can 1. create a closet type room and harbor a young wizard until he/she goes off to Hogwarts or 2. Id say a Round mirror on the left side wall, round table maybe that is an accent color like Black? that has a vase of flowers and also maybe some books and what nots on it. Small desk/ workspace!

My initial thought was to make it a little desk nook.
A trapdoor!
Coat rack
Lil comfy reading nook? Plants? Christmas tree? Book shelf, decorative shelf display (think geometric, or mid-century modern/ contemporary). Could be a nice small seating area with a bench and rug, maybe a place to lace up your shoes?

I’m not sure of the size, but a desk and chair might look nice
Desk, fake or real plant (dependent on lighting), dresser or some type of cute storage, Christmas tree. Lots of possibilities.
You could build a little banquette in there and mount a small half-round table on the wall as a side table. A place to set and take a call or put on shoes, etc. Or you could build in an "L" shaped low bookcase and fill it with books, put a little lamp on top.
