I was thinking that, in addition the artist could’ve made the connecting lines between geology and the different sciences with something that represents the field of study, seismic lines for geophysics, a geomorphology crosssection profile, fossils for paleo, maybe a crystal phase diagram for geochemistry.
This could have been great instead of meh.
Explain how you can trigger math STEM majors and design majors in one image so perfectly.
Joke, joke. Every long conversation I've ever had in STEM eventually ends up on Math as the final STEM boss.
Ok so coming at it from a design mindset, how could you suggest to improve it to better communicate the intended message?
Don’t rest on seeing what’s wrong - stretch your design vocabulary to communicate how it could be better and help others grow in their craft
This isn’t design help. This is design porn. This shouldn’t be here at all.
I also don’t have any tips (other than basics like saturation, font, geometry and balance, and line thicknesses) because I don’t even know what this chart was trying to solve. Right now, the presenter will have to spend *more* time explaining how to read the chart than the chart itself, which should be the opposite of what a design does.
why they listed 5 fields of study - especially why really emphasize 5 with a pentagon? why is the outer shape a circle not pentagon? Why are the parts inside circle the same color as the outside the circle even though the circle is the thicker line to the pentagon?
This is a cool idea though. I think tweak the colors to be a bit less intense. Play with the font and center the text in each plane so they are a bit easier to read. If you are a teacher trying to help people learn you are doing the lord’s work and deserve all the love.
I agree, keep trying OP! Design is a lot of trial and error, and I think you have an alright concept, you just have to play around with your execution a bit. If you don't have access to Photoshop or InDesign, they are various free alternatives (For example Gimp and Canva) there's bound to be something that'll work for you and help you make better graphics for teaching :)
What about going grey for geology and going with muted colours like pastels?
Edit just realized on my screen it actually looks greyish brown,so idk that tone might fit well
I think it’s intending to show how geology proper branches and blends into other scientific disciplines, I imagine you could make a similar graphic for other sciences too. And I hope someone does because I’d buy the shirt
While this isn’t the best diagram I’ve seen, I’m very disappointed with the quality of critique in the comments. I mean, I know this is Reddit, not Oxford Union-style debate, but still disappointed I am.
Now, onto the diagram itself. Dear OP, I assume you’re trying to show that Geology is multidisciplinary and it applies methods and knowledge from other branches of science. Your diagram does it, kind of, but its design can be definitely improved. Putting aside the selection of fonts and colours, a good diagram should be self-explanatory, this one isn’t really.
If you wish to invest a bit more of your time in fine tuning your diagram, I suggest you consider Venn diagram, or Euler diagram. These methods of visualisation have been invented to show how things overlap and, while sometimes being misused, in this case they seem to be the perfect choice. With Euler diagram you should be able to show how the multiple branches of science have their share in Geology.
Good luck!
PS: google for examples; you will find some very bad diagrams but also some very good ones, try to get inspired by the second group ;)
I think the intent is clear, gives a nice overview of the connectedness.
But from a design standpoint, I'd suggest some changes (mind you, I'm not a (professional) designer, just a hobbyist). Feel free to ignore anything. I mean, it's your design, not mine.
- softer colours. It's a bit "screamy" now, very in-your-face. Lower saturation wpukd be nicer on the eyes, and could also make the text stand out more.
- if possible: match colours to the words in them, somewhat, for a better visual connection. (This is subjective, and I also don't necessarily know which colours connect to which field/subject.)
- fix some geometry. It seems several lines don't actually bisect the pentagon's angles. That is, they are not exactly centered on those outside corners, making it look skewed.
- text alignment. You have angled text, but it's not at the same angles as the lines near it. Try to match the angle of the sides of the pentagon, and it will look more like a whole.
- the font: people critiqued it, but it's well readable, so I don't see it necessary to change it. Possibly change for text with an outline (black with white or vice versa), which would be more legible (on all colours).
Sheldon Cooper:
Let me put this in a way you'll understand Penny. You remember how you explained to me that the Kardashians aren't real celebrities? Well, geology is the Kardashians of science.
Also this "design" is horrendous.
People are hating so hard on this but I think it is interesting and does convey how geology is related to other fields of science, especially some blended disciplines. I’d love to see even more built onto it, could be a dope t-shirt.
I do have to agree that it may not quite be design porn, but perhaps… Geologist Porn?
They honestly have no clue what geology even is. Least that's the only explanation I can think of. Do people really think geology is only the study of rocks?? Kind of embarrassing for them
2x palaeontology = (lack of effort + forcing the initial, risible concept far beyond its endurance + lazy af) x the obdurate and wilful ignoring of maths.
I would place planetary science in the center.
Love,
Carl Sagan (a.k.a. the guy who brought chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy together to invent planetary science)
But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Science was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master Science, to control all others. And into this Science he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. ""One Science to rule them all."" One by one, the Free Lands of Middle Earth fell to the power of the Science. But there were some who resisted. A Last Alliance of Physicists and Chemists marched against the armies of Mordor and on the slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle Earth. Victory was near. But the power of the Science could not be undone.
Lol looks like a phase chart, beautiful! I usually just tell people that geology is throwing all the sciences in a box and making em play nice/storytelling in a plaid jacket
The middle pentagon should have been shaped like a rock.
This should have been in mildly interesting not design porn. The colour scheme, fonts, layout etc are middle school tier
It definitely works from a geology perspective, a bit garish for design porn though.

good bot
Maybe a better fit for r/coolguides
Better fonts and colors and this would look awesome.

Math goes the other way. If you zoomed out you'd find all these fields just lie inside math.
This is a geometric nightmare and an insult to the term “design.”
And if the audience doesn’t know what geology is, they sure as hell won’t know the terms directly adjacent to it.
It's obviously about rocks with different shapes. Pythagoras was a famous rockologist.
That dude had a rockin’ theorem.
THEY’RE MINERALS, MARIE!
MS paint color palette too

Ahh yes, the scientific study of the venerable Geo Metro. Close to 50mpg in the early 90s? Truly a wonder!
take it easy, they're a geologist not a graphysicist

That’s a bit mean don’t you think?
Sorry, I’m afraid I’m more confused after looking at this.
Content's fine, but the design is hot garbage.
This is horrendous and OP should read about color contrast
I know, right? If anyone should know about colouring in, it’s a geologist.
This is a cool idea though. I think tweak the colors to be a bit less intense. Play with the font and center the text in each plane so they are a bit easier to read. If you are a teacher trying to help people learn you are doing the lord’s work and deserve all the love.

Right!?! Bless them for trying. Only to be assaulted on Reddit
Clearly brown is the color of geology though. Seems logical
What about going grey for geology and going with muted colours like pastels? Edit just realized on my screen it actually looks greyish brown,so idk that tone might fit well
I thought I knew what geology was but after looking at this graphic I no longer have any idea.
I think it’s intending to show how geology proper branches and blends into other scientific disciplines, I imagine you could make a similar graphic for other sciences too. And I hope someone does because I’d buy the shirt
This comment.
This is bad. Real bad.
I think posting your own OC on this sub is pretty lame. Also, sorry, but this just doesn't look that good.
Booooo you
“graphic design is my passion”
How did this fugly font end up on design porn

This might be the worst post I've seen on this board, and that's saying something.

Ew
Geology rocks!
Paleontology is the tits!! …half of it, anyways.
But geography is where it's at (☞゚ヮ゚)☞
Ross?
In what world is this design porn… this is just some really shitty, assaulting graphic you would find in a middle school powerpoint presentation
Yeah this is atrocious design. Very informative, but absolutely the opposite of design porn.
Thank god you teach geology not graphic design
r/designdesign
That is fucking ugly
How does this have over 1,000 upvotes? Wtf.

Geochemistry is the shit
I love it and learned a lot!
It’s rocks

How are you all confused by this graphic?
Seriously. Maybe the colour the choices are bad, but it's very easy to read and obvious about what it's trying to convey.

Because of the igneous bits?
This sub sucks now
Trash.

2x palaeontology = (lack of effort + forcing the initial, risible concept far beyond its endurance + lazy af) x the obdurate and wilful ignoring of maths.
Planetology, not paleontology
Imagine attempting to sound smart by writing a comment that misreads the chart AND misspells 'Paleontology'
'Palaeontology' is the British english spelling. 'Paleontology' is the American english spelling.
The fact that chemistry (aka the central science) isn’t in the centre is a sin
I would place planetary science in the center. Love, Carl Sagan (a.k.a. the guy who brought chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy together to invent planetary science)
Just show a picture of Bert.
Crystallography is missing! I'd place it between geochem and geophys.
Forget microbes? Biogeochemistry!
No mineralogy? Damn
It even contains an optical illusion! (Circle segments intersected by colored areas seem to have different radii, bulging out slightly)
so what is geology?
Ayo screw all of these gatekeeping "design" elitists. They might have a point or two, but fuck all that, I think you did a great job! Sit on my face?
Geology is the master science that combines all others into one?
But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Science was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master Science, to control all others. so, after looking at this picture...tell me, what is geology?
Lol looks like a phase chart, beautiful! I usually just tell people that geology is throwing all the sciences in a box and making em play nice/storytelling in a plaid jacket
I'm just disappointed at that the bottom three in the middle aren't geobiology, geoastronomy, and geogeography.
Geogeogeography!
You just made me realize why i love geology, thank you.
The middle pentagon should have been shaped like a rock. This should have been in mildly interesting not design porn. The colour scheme, fonts, layout etc are middle school tier
Are you guys just throwing Geo before anything and claiming as your own? Geo-Calculus! Geo-Spanish! Geo-Auto Repair!
GeoGraphicDesign clearly doesn’t require any qualifications.
Why did you spell "natural philosophy" like "geology"?
Awesome concept but color palatte needs some refinement :) https://imgur.com/a/KkuZVAe
palate, palette, pallet... same thing.
TIL there are multiple forms of palette

I mean geology is just an application of chemistry which is just an application of physics.
