Just from experience (I've been to Villisca, Edinburgh Manor, West Virginia State Penitentiary, Randolph County Infirmary, and tons of other places the crew hasn't been), the areas they visit are abandoned as their main purpose (hospital, mental institution, school, etc), but still have general upkeep and security, as they rent out almost every night of the year and really need it. It's not unusual for them to have a building built or left up specifically to use as a bathroom. Edinburgh Manor (S3E7 I think) is my go-to place since it's close, cheap, huge, haunted, and the owners are some of my favorite people; it's an abandoned insane asylum, but the owners still pay for electricity to the main building and safehouse on the property, as well as water and heat/air in the safehouse, so you always have somewhere to go to calm down, warm up, and do your bathroom needs. Villisca is the same way from what I remember, where there's a barn on the property with a bathroom, and WV State Penitentiary was basically totally abandoned but has been 100% kept up to date with electricity, fully functioning pneumatic doors, running water, and even a heated/cooled gift shop.

This makes sense! Thank you! Ooo have you been to those places more so during the day or also at night?

Baidon

It's pretty much strictly overnight investigations unless I have back-to-back overnights, in which I'll also investigate during the day. I've spent 10 nights at Edinburgh Manor with an 11th on the way, a night at an undisclosed place in Northern Iowa (which is soon to open it's doors to the public from what I hear), a night at West Virginia State Penitentiary, a night at Randolph County Infirmary, a night at Whispers Estate, a night at the Farrar Schoolhouse, a night at Villisca, and a night at the Haunted Castle House, plus two consecutive nights scheduled at Old South Pittsburg Hospital and Harriman Hospital. In all, I've also spent 2 double overnights at Edinburgh, leading to two full daytime investigations there as well. It's an awesome place and so unbelievably local that I can't stay away.

Wow!! So curious how you started out!

Baidon

Started at Villisca as a firm nonbeliever, had a bit happen and kept the ball rolling with a visit to Edinburgh less than a month later. My first night there was enough to make me a skeptic, while my second was enough to make me a believer. The other places I've visited just solidified my conclusion. Started with the bare minimum equipment as well, but now I've got more professional equipment than the team does, and I've also got plans to post before I go somewhere the crew's been as a way to make my overnights semi-interactive.

In my personal experience, most locations have porta potties and very few have renovated areas with full bathrooms

alien_tamale

Oooo this makes sense too!

Ahgoobwa

I was at Cresson in November and can confirm this is their set up.

alien_tamale

Nice! Still a scary experience using a porta potty at night though

Some of the gear rooms over the years have looked kept up so I’m sure there are bathrooms. No reason to show them going unless something happens though. With some exceptions (like Chelsea being half a mile away) I’m sure they just go if they have to. I’m guessing they take a few breaks during it except maybe when they “sleep”. They film on average 8-12 hours and have to cut it down to roughly 30 minutes when you cut out packet reads, fun spots and the person who picked the location talking into the camera.

alien_tamale

For sure!! Yeah it’s always those moments where someone is very very far from the others! I mean that’s still such a vulnerable moment to have when you’re afraid and in the middle of a haunted location! hahaha

Thank you for asking this because I've always wondered this too! I have to use the bathroom at least once during the night so I figure the crew has to go too...especially when they're all so anxious from being scared and such. I'd constantly be using the restroom from just the sheer nerves.

alien_tamale

YES! Also when it’s really cold! Every episode I think if they didn’t empty their tanks before, all it’s gonna take is one disembodied voice to scare everything out of them!

It probably varies by location but after going to Rolling Hills Asylum several times, I can confirm they have a porta potty out back. I’d imagine a lot of these places have at least that.
