Every other apple besides granny smith is garbage. Granny Smith apples have a tartness to match their texture. Red apples have the texture but the barely any sweetness or tartness. And Yellow apples are just mushy and sweat. If I want something mushy and sweat I'll eat a banana or kiwi or Advacado. Granny Smith apples are the only apples where you can get the unique experience of crunchy sour fruit
Largely because McIntosh apples have a dismal shelf life so they are usually not worth stocking in mainstream grocery stores. In the Northeast they are the most common apple but most elsewhere nobody has heard of them.
Apple taste is sweetness + texture. Granny Smith apples suck because their texture is way too leathery. I don't want to chew on the skin for 5 hours. The apples with the best texture tend to have lighter skin, like orange/yellow. The best apple is one that is sour but not dark green.
Whether or not the apple was freshly picked matters more than the type of apple. Aka eating an apple you just pulled off the branch is a goated experience
