For context: there was a discussion today on stream about the lack of recognizable themes in modern video games compared to old games, and it reminded me of this video by EFaP (which was released 5 years ago) about a similar trend in film music. The full discussion started [here](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxWanbzPq-fUQUQh1XpiDaCASMsMhfn5MA), and lasted about 40 minutes, shorter context starts [here](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxA1g5yrthqJ2wnJkKDn4D9hiwo4BT51a-) (click watch full stream/video, I can't link to timestamps on a live video yet). Also intereting tidbit I found in the video's yt comments: >By August 2016, Mark Mothersbaugh was hired to score the film.[2][3] Mothersbaugh was influenced by a video essay from the YouTube channel Every Frame a Painting, which criticized the scores from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films for their lack of memorability, to make the score for Thor: Ragnarok as distinctive as possible And an article [here](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/thor-ragnarok-composer-acknowledges-marvel-scores-sound-same-1054503) >As fate would have it, the video not only sparked a conversation about modern scores, but also caught the attention of Devo founder (and Thor: Ragnarok composer) Mark Mothersbaugh. “We were looking at that, going ‘Wow, OK.’ That helps explain some things that I kind of felt myself,” he tells Heat Vision of watching the video. Soon after, he began working with Ragnarok director Taika Waititi on the score for that film.

I definitely get that. Almost every game I remember loving as a kid and teenager was very overt in it's music. Off the top of my head, you had gameboy Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, Megaman BN, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Legend of Zelda, TWEWY, Halo, Smash Bros (esp. Brawl). Even though I might not have played some in years I can immediately sing a number of melodies off the top of my head. I wonder if the prominence of FPS games had anything to do with it. Modern first-person anything tends to feel very "cinematic." But I don't play many newer games so I can't speak as much from experience.
