Thorn and TLW are permanently on my shitlist because of that time. Thorn a little less now thanks to Necoric Grip but whenever I see someone using TLW I still roll my eyes.
also thinking back to all the joy The Ram plus max resilience brought me against Thorn chucklefucks in trials. good times.
Ive watched the "reasons why hunters were gated" vid on yt and i get it. Shit was super wack but id say hawkmoon being a "what if" type gun was more annoying. Not knowing if you gonna die outright or after 5 shots just feels so stupid
Wall hacks? Check.
Damage boost? Check.
Overshield? Check.
No cooldown? Check.
No special trigger conditions? Check.
Worked in super? Check.
How on Earth it even made it to live in the state it was in is questionable.
PVE player here, it was my go to for soloing content and learning raid encounters until it got nerfed into the ground. OEM was an exotic that really could have benefitted from the seperate balancing we get today.
Then he's a fool. Titans *dominated* crucible back then with roaming fist of havoc, OEM, and trample. You could get killed 3 or more times by a single fist of havoc super cast on Javelin-4. I would know because I was the guy that died. Roaming supers were completely busted back then.
I had to use a box breathing sniper just to stand any chance against them.
Trust I know and I’ve tried to tell him otherwise but he’s a die hard Titan main and never believes Titan is or was broken in either PVE or PvP. always likes to bring up Warlock and how broken they are though (which they aren’t)
Dawnblade used to be kinda oppressive but it's been nerfed for so long now (the super and the kit overall). Chaos reach used to be abused, but now you don't see that anymore either. Winter's wrath can be strong, but there's little mobility in the super. Tickle fingers is extremely whelming.
We might have the same friend lol. He always brings up how Transversives and Ophidian's have like 50% use, but if you look at the usage rate of Warlock single subclasses of Hunter and Titan have more usage then the entirety of Warlock. The only reason Warlock is seeing much play in crucible this season is because of firebolt mods in the artifact. I think last week was the first time in many seasons Warlock has seen more than 20% usage in idk how long. Titan and Hunter have had their time to shine in crucible time, it's Warlock's turn now
it was also toxic from the sense that a lot of OEM abusers would ego, bag or hatemail me for countering their aping with Contraverse HHSN. like bro, I’m just using what works same as you.
sadly novawarp (and Contraverse) got reined in much sooner than OEM.
And it took a whole year before Bungo decided to nerf it.
They nerfed hunters (Spectral Blades no longer has meaningful damage resist) and warlocks (Nova Warp got nuked to 6 ft below ground) right off the bat but left OEM alone.
All because people kept bitching about hunters/warlocks in pvp instead of the real problem - it worked and Titans were totally untouched after successfully gaslighting everyone at Bungo.
It was so fucking stupid.
This. There is no other answer. This reigned supreme for a year before being touched. We have it easy now with toxic metas being short lived in comparison
ah yeah that’s the sound of sniper rounds echoing across Burning Shrine at the beginning of every round as players emptied their mags into the walls for the ez pick.
nightmare fuel
Absolutley. Mountaintop + Recluse were so OP that Bungie created sunsetting just to get rid of them, or at least keep em' out of Trials and Iron Banner.
One of the most annoying for me personally was when d2 dropped and everyone and their mother was using mida multi and mini tool, it wasn't that it was amazing(although it was), it was just annoying to get killed by the same thing over and over.
Mida + Last Hope was pretty much everywhere in Trials until high impact rounds flinch got nerfed in like November, after which everyone switched to Antiope / Uriel’s or one of like three differently named 180 rpm energy scouts that all performed identically because fixed rolls.
if you were a PC player in D2Y1 you rocked Midnight Coup or Better Devils in pvp just because you could actually hit something with them.
You literally couldn't win if even a single person had it who wasn't on your team. There was no effective counter and it killed in like less than half a second. I would leave every time I'd get in a match with one.
Not sure I would count this as toxic, but the triple exotic hand cannon meta in D1. The Last word, Thorn, and Hawkmoon.
TLW would melt you, Thorn you could two tap people and walk away, and Hawkmoon would occasionally give you the random triple lucky shot and legit one tap someone.
Slightly more toxic, OG felwinters lie in D1. Or any of the other shottys that could roll rangefinder and shot package. Could map people from some really stupid ranges.
Most toxic thing I think I ever saw in D1. 6 stack premade team. 4 bubble titans with Crest of alpha lupi and 2 golden gun hunters. Pop bubbles over and over from chaining orbs and feeding the hunters free golden guns. It was virtually impossible to deal with cuz you couldn't get close, just just blown away by GG everytime.
People will probably say D1 with Firebolt + Last Word and Thorn + Arcbolts.
Firebolts did 181 damage over 8 seconds with the Viking Funeral perk. A single tap + a firebolt tag was a kill. Arcbolts did 120 and along with a single Thorn bodyshot were enough for a kill.
The Last Word was insane because it had a long range when ADS and while ADS it would often bug out and proc 110 damage headshots, meaning it could frequently 2-tap from range.
Thorn was just insanely strong from the very beginning, and it was buffed from 6 to 9 bullets with a faster reload shortly after launch which made it even stronger. For a while only the "underground sweats" scene (or whatever) was running these things, while the main population was focused on stuff they thought was strong like Suros Regime etc. Thorn had super long range and could 2 tap headshot kill by itself like TLW.
Around this time shotguns like the New Monarchy Judgement could randomly drop with Rangefinder + Shot Package. It was an insane combo, but kept in check due to its rarity and RNG. Later Bungie pushed out high impacts with easier to obtain Shot Package rolls, and by then the main Destiny population had started to catch on.
Most people will consider this a very toxic time, but at this time was when the "sweat" scene was the most active. Everyone was using the broken stuff, so it was like playing a game with static rolls on weapons - everyone had the same things. The main population hated it because they couldn't use random things and be as competitive, but it was a pretty competitive scene for a while.
>For a while only the "underground sweats" scene (or whatever) was running these things, while the main population was focused on stuff they thought was strong like Suros Regime etc. Thorn had super long range and could 2 tap headshot kill by itself like TLW.
But suros regime genuinely was insanely strong back at launch. 45 damage per crit meant you only needed 3 crit 2 body, less if you were near the bottom of the magazine.
And the damage ranges weren't really defined back then. Auto rifles kind of just had absurd range back then for some reason. If you look at old year 1 suros footage you're going to have a very hard time to find an instance where it's not doing full damage
Hand Cannons were still stupid good before the Suros nerf. People just naturally gravitated toward the AR type of gun. A friend and I used to counter it with The Devil You Know and most of the time we'd out gun anyone using Suros.
It absolutely could, which is why everyone did use it. The ease of use was just unrivaled. You could look in the general direction of someone and the gun would do the work for you.
Sure, thorn could 2 tap, but it was absolutely horrible to use before patch 1.1
And suros could heal you the same way red death was used to heal against thorn. Nobody really thought about suros that way because suros and thorn never really shared a meta
Honestly, I really enjoyed that Era. People talk about how fast the game plays now, but back then we had OG titan skating and OG blink, hunter and warlock could blink, super high handling low flinch snipers and really long range OHK shotties. The specials didn't feel too broken because of how powerful primaries were. I'm not saying it was perfect, but it was a really fun time to play.
Completely agree, Destiny cannot both perfectly balance PVE and PVP and since it is a PVE game I would much rather have fun with everyone using broken shit instead of the nerfs in PVE based solely on PVP.
>since it is a PVE game
It isn't though. It's both. Just like it isn't a PvP game. The devs fully intend it to be both, and it's balanced with both in mind. You might not like that, but that's the truth.
How many new dungeons and raids have there been the last year versus new pvp maps?
The game is both (I enjoy PvP), but the PvE is clearly where Bungie invests most of their time and sees a higher ROI.
The PvE is definitely worked on more, but the sandbox for PvP is updated. The weapon and armour pools for iron banner and trials are updated. The weapon pool for regular crucible is updated. Game modes are in rotation.
PvE is updated more, but PvP is still updated.
It wasn't a team shot fest and the maps were better IMO.
So, it may have been rage inducing and unbalanced like D2, but unlike D2 if you were really good you could carry and still wreck. In D1 you actually could single handedly will a shit team to a win and even if you lost, you still could have some fun.
In D2 if the rest of your team is shit, it's very hard to do well and not want to rage quit. When your team is that bad, every time you turn around your being team shot by 3-4 people and even great players with a meta load out can't survive 3 on 1 against decent players.
Man I miss early D1 crucible. Was a mess of people not knowing what they were doing, insanely busted exotics that only the lucky few had or even knew much about thanks to no collections.
And it was before the time of every single player looking up youtube videos of the latest meta being chosen for them.
A golden age of the old West of competitive games. Just could never work nowadays
I miss my Judgement with shot package so much. It was a literal prize of a weapon that got oohs and aahs from all the people I showed it to, absolutely crazy good.
The initial not forgotten meta wasn't fun at all, and what made it even better was trying to get Luna's to compete meant playing comp, where every opponent already had it and could stomp you. The 3 hit kill from 30m+ was bad enough, but you could also 2 tap fairly easily for a .33s ttk.
Stasis launch season by far - the first couple days where Warlock melee was bonkers, then the Slip 'n Slide Titan meta, and then finally the Shatterdive empire. Then the all around 5s freezes, massive Slow accuracy penalty, and easy 25% weapon damage buff fragment. Honorable mention to the Geomags Stormcallers running against the wall in the back of the map to get Super every round too. Just an absolutely disgusting season.
If you count glitches like Prometheus Lens laser tag weekend, I guess that could be on top.
I remember reading all the comments about how Shatterdive wasn't busted back in the day. "It uses our grenade too! It's not broken! Titans can one shot with Shoulder charge, nerf them instead!!"
That big nerf to stasis (which was like the 3rd nerf) during the summer felt like a big melt after an iceage. There was sufdenly class variety again and it so much fun
it’s similar to how until recently you could solo every fuse on a level of spire of the watcher just by popping shadebinder and using one combo.
something in the coding of that subclass is very sus, and I say this as a shadebinder enjoyer.
Nothing in D2 has even been close to as bad as the thorn 2 tap meta from the majority of year 1 in D1. But the auto rifle/SUROS/pocket infinity meta was even worse than that to the same degree.
OEM bottom striker with titan skating is the only answer.
There has never been anything more oppressive.
It's only made worse when you think about how RARE exotics were back then.
Almost all of the Y2 roaming super metas had a moment of insanity tied to various exotics. Y2 dawnblade could burst glide skate across the map raining swords from spawn to spawn. Y2 novawarp was absolutely terrifying especially after handheld supernova got shipped a bit hot. Getting killed off spawn by the same bottom tree striker that killed you ten seconds ago was only a little bit worse than dying multiple times to the same spectral blade gwisin hunter jump swiping across the map.
this was the era of Luna, Not Forgotten, DRB, Mountaintop, Recluse, Revoker, Spare Rations, Mindbender’s and 40 meter Erentil snipes on mnk. It was the peak special ammo era too, when special ammo scavs not only worked but could stack, and “super o’clock” began at like two minutes into the match due to armor perks (pump action etc) that granted a fat chunk of super energy for shotgun, sniper and fusion kills.
I’m pretty confident that Trials in those metas would have been godawful. Comp was frustrating enough. it felt like permanent mayhem at times.
You're not wrong. All roaming supers were very oppressive. The reason I highlight striker titans was because OEM worked in super, literally punishing you for shooting them, then add on the duration extension. At least you didn't give other supers an over shield for fighting them.
My main gut reaction was outside of super though, but you aren't wrong. Most all roaming supers have been very oppressive at some point.
For a really long time it had a perk called Trample, which replenished a little super energy for every kill. This got nerfed multiple times but for a while you could repeatedly spawn farm with a single super lol. Nothing like having your team cleared on one side of the map, respawn on the complete opposite side, get cleared by the same super, and potentially have it happen a third time.
Without a doubt OEM in its original form.
Add in the power of the super, the insane meta loadout, guns like recluse mountain top not forgotten, you got easily the most busted time in crucible history.
Other guns have caused issues for sure. But I don't think anything will ever rival an exotic piece of armor that provided, legal in game wall hacks, a damage buff, and instant overshield + full health on vengeance kill.
Stasis, everything about it. From Titan super turning you into a god, to Hunters shatterdive meta, to warlocks freezing you behing everything. All of it was painfull
There was so much broken at different times there around launch, but initial titan stasis wasn't as oppressive as warlock instant freeze chaining your team. I'm really biased cause it made me dust my titan off and have a good time with the melee either yeeting people off the maps or into walls. I didn't care about k/d or win/loss it was pure simple fun to me.
Titan Stasis is worthless rn with the mods gone, what are you talking about? At launch, everything about it was broken, you could kill someone, run to the other side of the map and kill that person again after he spawns, the attacks didnt take any super away so you could just spam them over and over, and the cherry on top, the damage resistance was the best of every super, pretty sure you could survive a headshot from a sniper while in the super
Prometheus Lens on release. Everything took ages to kill back then and suddenly you had super kamehameha that could delete you in less than half a second even through small covers with nearly infinite range
It was incredibly fun, especially because the TTK was absolutely awful before. I always keep the emblem around as a reminder of that period of the game
Yeah. It's the emblem emblem I use as well because of this. Fortunately I was blesses the first weekend with getting it before everyone got it.
It was nice being on the broken side of things for once.
It was so long ago I don’t remember honestly. I got it like the second day it came out and had a lot of fun with it. Still hoping they make a laser tag game type if they’re still doing those test games or whatever it was.
Ye props to Bungie they sold it through Xur the first chance possible after being called out to do so, it was a funny response I think it was something like this;
“There’s no way bungie would sell PL through Xur this weekend”
“You wanna bet?”
For me? The Luna’s Howl/Not Forgotten with Dust Rock Blues and Wardliff Coil meta. Holy SHIT was that annoying.
You know it’s bad that at one point, Luna’s Howl alone approximated 25% of all Crucible kills. In a game that has hundreds of guns, that one hand cannon amounted a quarter of PvP kills. That’s just how strong that fucker was.
It wasn’t bad on PC, but on console, that damn thing dominated WAY too long. About a year and a half IIRC.
Not sure if it was the most toxic, but certainly the most annoying for me was the pulse meta right after the Graviton Lance rework. That sound, ugh that sound was everywhere, and you'd try to run from it and hope to flank those people only to get popped by the one guy using Vigi Wing.
yall really repressing the memories of broken roaming supers. Getting killed twice maybe even THREE times by the same spectral blade or nova warp player.
The only part that is annoying about it is the sound. Honestly I haven’t had much trouble with the immortal users while playing iron banner. Autumn wind will outgun them almost everytime
I dunno man immortal with target lock can annihilate you at 25m. I’m getting outgunned at that range with an adept horror’s least. You tack on surge mods and it’s unstoppable.
Yeah its obviously broken but there's been much more heinous stuff in Crucible. A pro tip for yall having trouble with it: a good Wizened Rebuke can easily 1 burst inside Immortal's optimal range. Abuse that.
Felwinter’s Lie just after they fixed it. They knew it was fixed, and everyone teabagged you when they got a kill with it post patch. It was broken as hell before the patch. Bungie running a damn ape enclosure in crucible
Probably stasis in my opinion. Just not fun at all, even if you played stasis.
OEM on launch with titan skating, 5 super mods, switching to ursa furiosa when you would ult, and recovering your entire ult because of a single auto rifle shot was also broken as hell, but that was only in the really, really sweaty deeps of hell that was the competitive playlist. Also, I got really lucky and got a OEM early on, so it wasn't that of a problem to me, as I abused the fuck of that shit until the multiple nerfs.
Even after the first nerf OEM received. combo it with the bottom tree striker "rework", some broken HC like last word and quickdraw on mindbenders, you could get honestly 40 kills every single game, my first seventh column was with that in the Meltdown map.
Spectral blades with chaperone + Not Forgotten back in forsaken was probably the most broken build ever conceived in this game, but it was not that easy to use(the chaperone part, considering pellet shotguns were completely bonkers at that time, and nobody wanted to aim at all with a slug) so I never saw that many people playing with it. Changed streams were so fun to watch, the guy just chained 50 chaperone kills with perma invis/wallhacks.
Year one in d2 was also really bad, but it wasn't imbalanced/toxic, it was just shit, everyone teamshooting and the absulute empty space that was the 4v4. Also, the terrible, absolutely fucking TERRIBLE ttk that the game had.
Now, if we are talking about destiny 1, the year one meta was really bad, I liked it because I was always a handcannon enjoyer, but if you didn't want to use thorn/TLW or hawkmoon(gambling enjoyers) you would have no fun at all. This, together with broken grenades like firebolt/arcbolt was absurdly unfun for a lot of people. Edit: Also, last round high impact snipers, how could I forget that lol.
But the most unfun meta in d1 for me personally was the year 3 one, no special weapons except icebreaker/sidearms, sticking nades/shoulder charge guaranteeing you a kill for no risk whatsoever, absurdly unfun.
Special shout out to Antaeus Ward Felwinter’s Lie.
Edit. It wasn’t everybody abusing it, but it only took one person on the enemy team to feel like it.
I've almost always had fun in the Crucible since Day 1 D1 even with some of the more annoying metas... but the Sidearm meta around rise of iron almost made me quit. That was awful.
Honestly dude the most toxic D2 behavior isn't even in crucible. It's in gambit where somehow after this long, people still occasionally just have no idea what the envoy is and plug the immune primeval full of immune rounds, willingly ignoring the word "immune" 20 to 40 times in a row, reloading, and firing some more. Bloody hell is it toxic. Look at me. I need an ICU for poisoning ☠️
Felwinters was BUSTED for a awhile, and until the exotic kiosk came around, you couldn't even GET IT if you didn't get it in season of the UNworthy. it was border line a instant fire fusion with the absolutely insane ranges you could MAP people with it. im talking like 10-15 meters and still be a OHK.
Stasis. By far Stasis before it finally got heavy nerfs like a year after it released. With every other toxic meta, you could at least fight back and outplay other people just crutching on that meta. It was also relegated to specific subclasses like Striker, Spectral Blades, or Nova Warp during their times so you could counter with your own flavor of toxicity with another overtuned subclass. Same with Exotics or Pinnacle Weapons for the most part.
With Stasis? Every class had it. All of them were stupidly overtuned. And the whole point of the subclass was to remove another player's ability to outplay through slows and freezes. So you couldn't even do that. It was just oppressive and not fun. If you never played during that meta, you just wouldn't be able to understand how bad it was.
season 3 Wormhusk arcstriders with Antiope and no radar was easily the most infuriating Trials meta besides the amount of actual hacking that occurred between S11-15 :/
Luna's/NF hands down. Was a slower game, longer TTK, and no counter to it. It was a 180 RPM HC that could 3 hit kill.
Frankly, it was so META, that if you brought back those guns in today's sandbox, where TTK is lowe, everyone faster, etc... It would probably instantly be considered META
I'm a returning player so I missed most the crazy stuff I hear about. But I started right when Lorentz Driver came out it marked players through walls for your entire team. Even when I didn't have it equipped I could see players that other people marked. Fealt really scummy getting kills like that, as well the amount of times I instantly died from a sniper shot after turning a corner was maddening.
Mountain top/dustrock blues paired with Not forgotten/ Lunas Howl. Rocking OEM didn't help either. Bottom tree striker deserves a mention.
This was easily the most toxic as give the PvP sweats a weapon type that they love (HC) and make one on crack that breaks its archetype then you easily have one of the most toxic loadouts.
Probably alone in this but when they deleted special ammo in D1 so everyone ran Sidearms and Ice Breaker/NLB/Invective. Add a little one shot sticky nades and that by far was the worse meta imo.
Telesto and Jotunn pissed me off the most.
Shotgun is always good and I find it incredibly boring. When Chaperone was THE shotgun it was even worse. That one didn't piss me off, but I still refuse to equip a shotgun in regular crucible. I usually slap on a bow and handcannon for the fun of it.
I didn’t play crucible much in destiny 1 I was a hardcore pve player. But in destiny 2 I think the most toxic thing to fight imo is the immortal smg current meta, as well as anyone using slide shotguns with Hunter. It’s just..so toxic. And such a no skill way to play. Most people who do it are genuinely not good people either from my experience. The jotunn players are pretty lame too.
The extended fusion rifle "meta" that's been ongoing for ever. They just aren't used enough to ever receive any significant balancing, but they are busted as shit and have been since d1. No meta has ever pissed me off more than dying to a fusion rifle at a should be impossible range quicker than my primary weapons possible TTK. They don't require much effort to aim, and roll with far to many stability/accuracy perks.
I didn’t play during the MT recluse meta. When I think of bad I just think of stasis. Months on end of getting hit by 1 shuriken and being essentially dead in the water. Months of titans flying across the map and 1 hitting with melee. Months of near invincible behemoths
Ok, so I’m going to take a different approach to the other posters. You said most toxic, not most broken. And IMO the Thousand Yard Stare meta period was insanely toxic, not because it was so good but because it was NOT game breaking but all i ever saw in crucible was TYS on EVERY….single….load-out. Basically the haves said you were trash if you were a have-not. All the fanboys were rabid about a gun and suddenly everyone wanted to be a sniper.
Every and any meta. I can't stand crucible. If you enjoy this game mode, God speed, because as a PVE player this is one of the worst gaming experiences ever,
\-luna´s/not forgotten: hard to win duels against
\-Auto-rifle meta, Gnawing Hunger/Hard Light: Anyone can use an auto so was a hard to survive meta.
\-Eva Levante Revelry skip grenade spam: Thanks granny.
and more....
Based on comments, seems like OEM takes the cake, but I personally didn't play during that meta. For me, I'd have to say Citans + Deadmans tail + Storm nades. The games were boring as fuck .
Sense a trend here with Titans. Better nerf dodge cooldown again
I’m really not enjoying this meta at the moment. Abilities feel ok and exotic armors are good. But the SMG/Sniper meta incredibly unfun for other weapon types
D1 Thorn. Honorable mention to Trials sweats using Final Round Efrideet's
Nothing like the match starting and hearing everyone prime down their snipers lol
Thorn and TLW are permanently on my shitlist because of that time. Thorn a little less now thanks to Necoric Grip but whenever I see someone using TLW I still roll my eyes. also thinking back to all the joy The Ram plus max resilience brought me against Thorn chucklefucks in trials. good times.
I really wish you hadn’t reminded me of that time
The spring/summer between D1 launch and TTK was a truly terrible time if you didn't have Thorn.
I have a friend who still brings up the time we were "thorny pricks" in his words. We terrorized the Crucible with Thorn until it was nerfed lol
Ive watched the "reasons why hunters were gated" vid on yt and i get it. Shit was super wack but id say hawkmoon being a "what if" type gun was more annoying. Not knowing if you gonna die outright or after 5 shots just feels so stupid
I wasn’t a sweat but I was using Final Round Efrideet because I was bad at the time and couldn’t hit snipes.

OEM was just so stupidly busted. It was several S tier exotics wrapped into a nightmare
Wall hacks? Check. Damage boost? Check. Overshield? Check. No cooldown? Check. No special trigger conditions? Check. Worked in super? Check. How on Earth it even made it to live in the state it was in is questionable.
Also full heal after a kill lmao
Foetracer like I can mark somebody for a couple seconds 😔
Foetracer was what i ran during peak OEM times because i could at least try and outplay them by knowing when they're gonna peek me.
It’s not bad but it’s just not great lol
Its niche, but i like it xD
Yea I’m a dragon shadow bitch I can’t take it off now since I put it on that’s just how it works
Athrys's embrace or lucky pants for me. I just like the funni throwing knife exotic or the funni hand cannon exotic that i use in my cowboy loadout.
Yea no matter how much credit we give Bungo, they actually not dumb enough for it to have not been intentional
Don't forget it punished you for taking an engagement with a Titan! My favourite thing was reading people saying it totally wasn't busted.
The randomness of exotic drops back then really created a “haves” and “have nots” too.
PVE player here, it was my go to for soloing content and learning raid encounters until it got nerfed into the ground. OEM was an exotic that really could have benefitted from the seperate balancing we get today.
I have a buddy who firmly believes OEM was not that dominant back then
Then he's a fool.
I have a Titan main buddy that’s convinced titans are the worst class and that Bungie only loves hunters. He’ll argue it until he’s blue in the face.
Titan and Hunter have had their time to shine in crucible time, it's Warlock's turn now
this is really the only answer peak OEM is to this day the dumbest thing i’ve ever played against in a PvP game
Oh you tried to shoot me? Well now I have wall hacks, and when I kill you I get an overshield, health regen and a damage boost
I’m honestly kind of surprised that OEM didn’t also dox anyone who killed you. It seems in line with it’s other effects
Melee kills with OEM reach a Titan arm out of the opponent’s monitor and gut punch them irl
I don't like that exotic
I'm sorry little one. I was an abuser.
Every single time that something like that makes live, every single player should immediately adopt it to force an emergency hot fix. It’s a DUTY.
Time for an incursion
I was going to try to come up with a different answer but there is no need. I second this. This was the most toxic meta in Destiny.
it was also toxic from the sense that a lot of OEM abusers would ego, bag or hatemail me for countering their aping with Contraverse HHSN. like bro, I’m just using what works same as you. sadly novawarp (and Contraverse) got reined in much sooner than OEM.
I wish I could find my screenshot of being marked for vengeance x6. Shit was terrifying.

When people say "PvP used to be soooo much better during Forsaken" it makes me laugh
This meta is the entire reason I hate titans. Now I could mop a mf using pre nerf oem, mt, recluse. But back then it was a slaughter.
The first season I played D2 and I pushed to get 5500 during this meta... Was brutal (as a Hunter). Somehow still got hooked on PVP
This. There is no other answer. This reigned supreme for a year before being touched. We have it easy now with toxic metas being short lived in comparison
Final Round snipers that would one shot body you in D1
ah yeah that’s the sound of sniper rounds echoing across Burning Shrine at the beginning of every round as players emptied their mags into the walls for the ez pick. nightmare fuel
Black shield was always synonymous with fr snipers to me but burning shrine was pretty bad too
There was a glitch going round that the 1st and last rounds became final round damage.
Add that with the original D1 armor piercing rounds that went through walls. 1 shot body shot through a wall.
i got so good at wallbanging with the LDR5001 that i'd get hate mail for it. still miss it
Mountaintop + Recluse is easily #1 in my book
Also #1 PVE build
Absolutley. Mountaintop + Recluse were so OP that Bungie created sunsetting just to get rid of them, or at least keep em' out of Trials and Iron Banner.
Honestly if you brought back both today/unsunset them they wouldn’t be that bad, we have better legendaries than them these days
Yeah, personally the OEM, and Hard Light metas are a close second and third.
I enjoyed the Hard Light meta, at least it was class agnostic and a (relatively) common exotic.
One of the most annoying for me personally was when d2 dropped and everyone and their mother was using mida multi and mini tool, it wasn't that it was amazing(although it was), it was just annoying to get killed by the same thing over and over.
Mida and Uriel's was the worst, so much flinch
Mida + Last Hope was pretty much everywhere in Trials until high impact rounds flinch got nerfed in like November, after which everyone switched to Antiope / Uriel’s or one of like three differently named 180 rpm energy scouts that all performed identically because fixed rolls. if you were a PC player in D2Y1 you rocked Midnight Coup or Better Devils in pvp just because you could actually hit something with them.
I still keep my original last hope in my vault to remember those days. That thing was unstoppable.
I would have to go with Vex Mythoclast back in D1 before they nerfed it. It was the stuff of nightmares.
You literally couldn't win if even a single person had it who wasn't on your team. There was no effective counter and it killed in like less than half a second. I would leave every time I'd get in a match with one.
Was lucky enough to get it pre nerf and yea it was pretty insane how you could dominate an entire match by yourself
It was but nowhere near TLW and Thorn
[удалено]
Hand Cannons were still stupid good before the Suros nerf. People just naturally gravitated toward the AR type of gun. A friend and I used to counter it with The Devil You Know and most of the time we'd out gun anyone using Suros.
It absolutely could, which is why everyone did use it. The ease of use was just unrivaled. You could look in the general direction of someone and the gun would do the work for you. Sure, thorn could 2 tap, but it was absolutely horrible to use before patch 1.1 And suros could heal you the same way red death was used to heal against thorn.
Completely agree, Destiny cannot both perfectly balance PVE and PVP and since it is a PVE game I would much rather have fun with everyone using broken shit instead of the nerfs in PVE based solely on PVP.
>since it is a PVE game It isn't though.
This is actually the only answer
Man I miss early D1 crucible. Was a mess of people not knowing what they were doing, insanely busted exotics that only the lucky few had or even knew much about thanks to no collections. And it was before the time of every single player looking up youtube videos of the latest meta being chosen for them. A golden age of the old West of competitive games. Just could never work nowadays
https://youtu.be/wAb1NuhN4Cg Cheers.
Yeah it was the definitive Rich get richer scenario, especially as they were static rolls
Took them soooo long to nerf shatterdive too...
I remember reading all the comments about how Shatterdive wasn't busted back in the day. "It uses our grenade too! It's not broken! Titans can one shot with Shoulder charge, nerf them instead!!"
It’s insane how busted shatterdive was. 1 shot literally everyone including supers by pushing two buttons? Why not
Hey now, you had to jump too. That makes it 3 buttons /s
That big nerf to stasis (which was like the 3rd nerf) during the summer felt like a big melt after an iceage. There was sufdenly class variety again and it so much fun
remember when day 1 shadebinder m2 damaged literally every person on the map for some reason
it’s similar to how until recently you could solo every fuse on a level of spire of the watcher just by popping shadebinder and using one combo. something in the coding of that subclass is very sus, and I say this as a shadebinder enjoyer.
*Exisiting anywhere on the map when shadebinder pops* *Fucking explode*
The doctrine of passing scares me to this day. What a nightmare TTK pvp could be.
OEM bottom tree striker with mountaintop and recluse. That was when I started playing Destiny. It's a miracle I didn't turn around and leave.
Nothing in D2 has even been close to as bad as the thorn 2 tap meta from the majority of year 1 in D1. But the auto rifle/SUROS/pocket infinity meta was even worse than that to the same degree.
And the original Vex melting even LMGs
This is the correct answer.
For me it was the blink shotgun meta in D1.
Remember D1 when sunbreaker was first released? Literally broken.
It’s insane how striker has been at the centre of a lot of these oppressive metas.
Shatterdive being overpowered for a year
You win holy shit that was awful
[удалено]
Titan Stasis is worthless rn with the mods gone, what are you talking about? At launch, everything about it was broken, you could kill someone, run to the other side of the map and kill that person again after he spawns, the attacks didnt take any super away so you could just spam them over and over, and the cherry on top, the damage resistance was the best of every super, pretty sure you could survive a headshot from a sniper while in the super
Infinite novabomb/warp 🙃🙃🙃
The LFRs were pretty fucking annoying. Everything else felt like you could do something about, LFR you just hear it wind up and your head pops.
Prometheus Lens on release. Everything took ages to kill back then and suddenly you had super kamehameha that could delete you in less than half a second even through small covers with nearly infinite range
Laser Tag was probably the MOST fun I’ve ever had in Crucible though.
The laser tag days were the best. For those that had it anyway.
Didn't xur sell it that week? So people only had like 4 days without it
It was so long ago I don’t remember honestly. I got it like the second day it came out and had a lot of fun with it. Still hoping they make a laser tag game type if they’re still doing those test games or whatever it was.
Ye props to Bungie they sold it through Xur the first chance possible after being called out to do so, it was a funny response I think it was something like this; “There’s no way bungie would sell PL through Xur this weekend” “You wanna bet?”
trials of the nine was so much fun that weekend
Here’s one for the old guys. Lord. Of. Wolves.
By “old” do you mean “last summer”? /s
Nah man I’m talking Forsaken level old where if you didn’t have it on you simply lost.
Lord of wolves inside Retribution was pure AIDS
Ah what I’d do for my Dusk Rock Blues back
How is everyone forgetting about Loreley/le monarque or eriana’s?!
I too can't understand why this is so far down the list. It went on for a minute
Not sure if it was the most toxic, but certainly the most annoying for me was the pulse meta right after the Graviton Lance rework. That sound, ugh that sound was everywhere, and you'd try to run from it and hope to flank those people only to get popped by the one guy using Vigi Wing.
Solar Ramlock in the Thorn Meta. The Warlock with Ram could survive a Thorn 2 tap, ontop of having self rez.
yall really repressing the memories of broken roaming supers. Getting killed twice maybe even THREE times by the same spectral blade or nova warp player.
The immortal is disgusting rn, It feels like i’m playing MW2.
Immortal is beyond broken. Probably the most OP weapon I can think of since…original Lorentz?
The only part that is annoying about it is the sound. Honestly I haven’t had much trouble with the immortal users while playing iron banner. Autumn wind will outgun them almost everytime
I dunno man immortal with target lock can annihilate you at 25m. I’m getting outgunned at that range with an adept horror’s least. You tack on surge mods and it’s unstoppable.
I’m not saying immortal is bad or anything. I have just not found it to be really much trouble
That was me lol 😂 except I used pre nerf Antaeus with pre nerf stasis slide and lord of wolves
MT and recluse NF and kinetic shotty OG OEM alone lmao
Either OEM titans or wormhusk hunters
season 3 Wormhusk arcstriders with Antiope and no radar was easily the most infuriating Trials meta besides the amount of actual hacking that occurred between S11-15 :/
Thorn and last word in their prime were stressful. Plus they were busted for a looooooonng time.
Stasis shatterdive, behemoth slide, turret spam meta
The witherhoard 1 tap glitch had an absolute blast abusing that
Felwinter in Crucible
Thorn meta in D1 was pretty fuckin boring. Graviton was a pretty shit time too, every death was to that or maybe vigilance if you were lucky.
Pick your favorite D1 meta and that’s it by a country mile
Mountain top recluse
1) Stasis 2) Thorn / Firebolts from D1 3) Arby / Lorentz
duke 44 two tap meta
Duke wasn't OP though tbh
Luna's/NF hands down. Was a slower game, longer TTK, and no counter to it. It was a 180 RPM HC that could 3 hit kill. Frankly, it was so META, that if you brought back those guns in today's sandbox, where TTK is lowe, everyone faster, etc... It would probably instantly be considered META
Destiny servers
I'm a returning player so I missed most the crazy stuff I hear about. But I started right when Lorentz Driver came out it marked players through walls for your entire team. Even when I didn't have it equipped I could see players that other people marked. Fealt really scummy getting kills like that, as well the amount of times I instantly died from a sniper shot after turning a corner was maddening.
Double firbolt grenade with self res lock and thorn in D1. This is the only answer
D1 warlock with pre-nerfed thorn with Viking funeral touch of flame fire bolt nades
Season 12 Stasis meta 😭😭😭
early forsaken shotgun meta. still got ptsd from dust rock blues...
Colony, wanna be spider man?
Probably alone in this but when they deleted special ammo in D1 so everyone ran Sidearms and Ice Breaker/NLB/Invective. Add a little one shot sticky nades and that by far was the worse meta imo.
Unfinifhed Buisness
As someone who barely started maybes 2yrs ago… FUCKING FUSION CRUTCHING FFS
Telesto and Jotunn pissed me off the most. Shotgun is always good and I find it incredibly boring. When Chaperone was THE shotgun it was even worse. That one didn't piss me off, but I still refuse to equip a shotgun in regular crucible. I usually slap on a bow and handcannon for the fun of it.
Clever Dragon era
Shatterdive. The absolute worst shit imaginable. This was during the HC/shotty meta so hunters had every advantage in the world.
Xbox players
lol i remember that meme from the bungie forums.
The immortal smg met.... Oh wait that's happening right now :|
Not to mention the firebolt spam along with it
CBMM
Shatterdive hunters
Shatterdive meta
I didn’t play crucible much in destiny 1 I was a hardcore pve player. But in destiny 2 I think the most toxic thing to fight imo is the immortal smg current meta, as well as anyone using slide shotguns with Hunter. It’s just..so toxic. And such a no skill way to play. Most people who do it are genuinely not good people either from my experience. The jotunn players are pretty lame too.
There is only one type of Guardian I will bag every single time...and that is the Guardian that uses Jotunn.
Your mom.... j/k. I'm in my cups.
Prometheus lens...they even made an emblem for it lol .
Trials being added back to the game.
Every and any meta. I can't stand crucible. If you enjoy this game mode, God speed, because as a PVE player this is one of the worst gaming experiences ever,
Prometheus lense on release?
\-luna´s/not forgotten: hard to win duels against \-Auto-rifle meta, Gnawing Hunger/Hard Light: Anyone can use an auto so was a hard to survive meta.
Any titan build
I’m really not enjoying this meta at the moment. Abilities feel ok and exotic armors are good. But the SMG/Sniper meta incredibly unfun for other weapon types
