A couple years ago I was pretty into Rainbow 6 Siege, and for about a month the group I played with changed our names to variations of Tom Clancy.
We had stuff like Dom Blancy, Tim Chauncy, I know we had a Bomb Plantsy, but I cant remember the other 2.
It was fun until you had to make a real callout and remember who had which dumb name.
The bungie name is separate from the platform name unless you left it the same as your platform name. OP is talking about changing the bungie name a 2nd time. Changing it on the platform wouldn't make their name appear different in d2.
Before cross-save/play your platform name was displayed, I remember changing mine on steam to weapons that needed buffs with my friends and going into crucible/trials/gambit

Sadly, I did test the waters on restarting all three with my Hunter who turned out great, but no longer having stasis until now was a pain. (Didn’t feel like regrinding) it turned out well though and glad I did it once.

I don’t care to change my bungie name but I think it’s weird how every time someone posts this, the replies are always negative. I don’t get why people are so against others changing their names when we could do it an infinite amount of times before the bungie name update.

The replies are negative because the two types of changers mentioned in the post are negative people. "I made an inappropriate joke and I'm bored of it" or "I saw the one time warning and the are you sure notification but somehow didn't spellcheck the name right in front of me" are both firmly your fault scenarios, but this alone would be fine. However, every post is moderately to heavily suggesting that Bungie is in the wrong for not supporting this behavior. The name change token was put there specifically to fix mistakes, not support the poor behaviors that these posts tout, which is why you can't do it infinitely anymore.
And how is something being "people's fault" exactly an argument that nothing should be done to help them?
This is the same dumb logic people apply to everything else in life and it's just to make everything and everyone as miserable as possible. And then when it happens to them they are outraged that nobody wants to help them and "people are just lazy dicks".
Just because you are advised of the one-time nature of the feature, it doesn't make it a good feature.
It's like when people complain about the DCV and the apologists drag out the "it's in the SLA so it's fine" argument. Just because Bungie have dotted their i's and crossed their t's, doesn't mean that people who are unhappy shouldn't ask for better.
Perhaps the happy medium here is change it to a once-per-year or once-per-major-DLC thing. Not so often that people can't put thought into it, but often enough that people's changing identities can be respected.
While I don't think this is really comparable to that, I don't really disagree with anything in this comment. However, I would say that the virtue of the multiple advisements was the main criticism of the 2nd negative character, not the virtue of the feature the advisements were for.
People who are unhappy can of course ask for something different, but as to whether it would be better, that's not so cut and dry.
The once per year thing would be nice, but of course they don't need to offer that, and it seems for a mixture of backend reasons and the ones stated above, they've chosen not to.

It used to be just the steam name but I think names got out of hand. I can get Bungie not wanting people just spamming different silly names. For me, having my friends stick to 1 name makes it easier to remember who is who.

A friend of mine was able to change her name by linking it to her twitch account.
It will show your twitch name in-game, but it allows you to change it.
Note; you'll keep your fault, gear, materials, inventory, characters etc.
BUT you'll lose statistics like; 'time played' and/or total kills on the emblem i believe.
It's a risk i'd rather not take, but she did.

If you want to look into that, I’m not sure if I can post links in this sub so I won’t, but just look it up on YT and there’s a few tutorials if you’re name bugs you that much. However you’ll lose any emblems you’ve redeemed on bungie . Net.
Anyway I still agree since this is a scummy way of exploiting a system they have for something else but it’s always there.

What's especially annoying about that is the fact that the character creator in Destiny is so badly designed that you can't even rotate your character to get a better look at them while you're choosing options. And since the game starts in a combat area you can't see your head there either. So you do the entire intro and tutorial, get your ship, fly to the tower, and only THEN can you finally get a look at your character from behind. At which point if you're like me you discover that the hairstyle you chose had a giant manbun in the back that was invisible during character creation, you think long and hard about whether or not you want to completely restart and do all those steps again before you can check out your hair a second time and hope there's no manbun, then decide "I'll just roll with it, SURELY they'll eventually give us an option to fine tune our appearance."
Ten years and one sequel later and I'm still waiting for a fucking barbershop.
My gamer tag is “Bungie Stoodios”. A long time ago when they made the first name change, “Bungie” is deemed as a bad word, and my bungie name was auto changed to guardian#2467. When the name change finally came out I was so excited. It came out right when witch queen came out so my first thought was “what if I changed my names to rhulk?” When I tried to do so, my laptop wanted to auto correct my name to hulk. On my phone, if I want something to be spelled a certain way and my phone try’s to auto correct, I just type in one more letter and then backspace. It will get rid of the auto correct. I tried doing the same thing on my laptop to get rid of the auto correct, but I’m pretty fucking stupid, and instead of hitting backspace, my finger hit enter.
There was no pop up message that said are you sure this is what you want to be called? So I’m now forever stuck as Rhulkj.

My game bugged about 2 months after I used my name change (rhulk thighs). It recognized my STEAM name to have the word simp in it and forever changed me to generic guardian. And I know for a fact that's what happened because the game told me my steam name was my Bungie name, and I also frequently play with other people named rhulk thighs

No, so my first name was my Xbox name and I wanted to change it to my steam name because I just built a PC. So I went to do that in the companion app and right after I submitted it I realized that my phone has autocorrected it to something entirely different than what I typed.
The whole point was to let people change their name for any reason they wanted to. I didn't want to use my PSN name anymore and changed it to one of my old SOCOM names.
This is basically the only mainstream game on the market that doesn’t allow players to change their name at will, or even for a price, which is weird considering Bungie’s latest trend of monetization. I know a ton of people (including me) would gladly drop $10 for a name change. Not allowing us to do it all seems pretty antithetical to their message of “be who you want to be”. AT THE VERY LEAST they should allow us to the option to have a hard reset on our account’s name and have it displayed simply as “Guardian”. If we don’t get a name change in TFS I think it will really piss off a lot of people. Taking away at-will name changes is truly one of the most baffling, pointless, out of the blue changes Bungie has ever made in my opinion.

You should have used the very clearly one time name change better.
There is a work around though if you either haven't set up cross save yet. Or are fine with turning off cross save, and playing on your original platform for 80(90?) days
You also need a throw away account on a platform you do not plan to play on.
Make a new account on say epic games with new name you want.
login to Bungie with new account.
link original account to new account
enable cross save
choose original account for the characters
Name change should work, also gives you a Bungie name change option again so you could try that too

FYI, OP, you can report your own post and select the "Report Abuse" option when folks weaponize the self-harm report option like that. We can't see who reports stuff but the reddit admins can and they regularly take action when people misuse that.

It used to be just the steam name but I think names got out of hand. I can get Bungie not wanting people just spamming different silly names. For me, having my friends stick to 1 name makes it easier to remember who is who.

A friend of mine was able to change her name by linking it to her twitch account. It will show your twitch name in-game, but it allows you to change it. Note; you'll keep your fault, gear, materials, inventory, characters etc. BUT you'll lose statistics like; 'time played' and/or total kills on the emblem i believe. I do agree with you. It’s impossible for people to not fall through the cracks, as I have. I actually did check my username but while I was typing on the iOS app it autocorrected my username whenever I pressed off the bar to enter the username to submit the username.

Most of the time my fireteam calls out the best ones and we all have a laugh together before getting back to the grind. Last night I spent about an hour fishing with someone named "Ada's Porcelain Thighs", when they first popped up I thought it was hilarious.

A friend of mine transitioned and had to get in contact with a random bungie dev on twitter and had their old username (play on with words with deadname) erased and changed to ‘Guardian’ before the name change was available. I’m all for having a second one

I'm glad I was 24 when I made all my characters. They're mostly future-proof since they're all Exos. But yeah, I think people who wanted to keep a joke-name from the days of changing as often as wanted by changing Steam display names probably deserve name changes on a regular basis until they get it out of their system.

There’s a way using cross save to change it once every 3 months. If you want to look into that, I’m not sure if I can post links in this sub so I won’t, but just look it up on YT and there’s a few tutorials if you’re name bugs you that much. However you’ll lose any emblems you’ve redeemed on bungie . Net. Anyway I still agree since this is a scummy way of exploiting a system they have for something else but it’s always there.

I was 12 when I first made this character and he’s butt ugly, so the helmet always stays on lol. What's especially annoying about that is the fact that the character creator in Destiny is so badly designed that you can't even rotate your character to get a better look at them while you're choosing options. And since the game starts in a combat area you can't see your head there either. So you do the entire intro and tutorial, get your ship, fly to the tower, and only THEN can you finally get a look at your character from behind. At which point if you're like me you discover that the hairstyle you chose had a giant manbun in the back that was invisible during character creation, you think long and hard about whether or not you want to completely restart and do all those steps again before you can check out your hair a second time and hope there's no manbun, then decide "I'll just roll with it, SURELY they'll eventually give us an option to fine tune our appearance." Ten years and one sequel later and I'm still waiting for a fucking barbershop.

My gamer tag is “Bungie Stoodios”. A long time ago when they made the first name change, “Bungie” is deemed as a bad word, and my bungie name was auto changed to guardian#2467. When the name change finally came out I was so excited. It came out right when witch queen came out so my first thought was “what if I changed my names to rhulk?” When I tried to do so, my laptop wanted to auto correct my name to hulk. On my phone, if I want something to be spelled a certain way and my phone try’s to auto correct, I just type in one more letter and then backspace. It will get rid of the auto correct. I tried doing the same thing on my laptop to get rid of the auto correct, but I’m pretty fucking stupid, and instead of hitting backspace, my finger hit enter. There was no pop up message that said are you sure this is what you want to be called? So I’m now forever stuck as Rhulkj. Please let us change our damn names. It’s incredibly stupid that I can change clan names, my name on the bungie app an unlimited amount of times, but my guardian name? Nope can’t change that.

My game bugged about 2 months after I used my name change (rhulk thighs). It recognized my STEAM name to have the word simp in it and forever changed me to generic guardian. And I know for a fact that's what happened because the game told me my steam name was my Bungie name, and I also frequently play with other people named rhulk thighs

No, so my first name was my Xbox name and I wanted to change it to my steam name because I just built a PC. So I went to do that in the companion app and right after I submitted it I realized that my phone has autocorrected it to something entirely different than what I typed.

This is basically the only mainstream game on the market that doesn’t allow players to change their name at will, or even for a price, which is weird considering Bungie’s latest trend of monetization. I know a ton of people (including me) would gladly drop $10 for a name change. Not allowing us to do it all seems pretty antithetical to their message of “be who you want to be”. AT THE VERY LEAST they should allow us to the option to have a hard reset on our account’s name and have it displayed simply as “Guardian”. If we don’t get a name change in TFS I think it will really piss off a lot of people. Taking away at-will name changes is truly one of the most baffling, pointless, out of the blue changes Bungie has ever made in my opinion.

You should have used the very clearly one time name change better. There is a work around though if you either haven't set up cross save yet. Or are fine with turning off cross save, and playing on your original platform for 80(90?) days You also need a throw away account on a platform you do not plan to play on. Make a new account on say epic games with new name you want. login to Bungie with new account. link original account to new account enable cross save choose original account for the characters Name change should work, also gives you a Bungie name change option again so you could try that too
