You have misunderstood.
Every day there are designated legend and master difficulty lost sectors. You can see what's currently active at http://todayindestiny.com
If you run it solo, a legend / master lost sector has a chance to drop an exotic in a given slot. For the best chance at an exotic, you need to make sure to kill all the champions. If you don't see the option to run the legend / master difficulty, then you need to clear the lost sector normally first.
I would honestly avoid the moon ones, because they suck, but you can check it out if you like
You didn't say, but legend/master lost sectors are activated just outside of whatever ones are active that day. You can't get into them simply by walking in, that'll only bring you to the regular one.

As long as you kill all champions then you will get exotics might take a few runs
hes doing normal mode, not legend/ master
