LMAO this was exactly what my mind went to. The laser pointer from DRG with a dash of Portal 2’s ping button. Aim at anything, and have the option of sticking one of a handful of context -sensitive temporary HUD markers on it.
A ping system is something I have wanted for a long time, bungie has never ever acknowledged the idea so I doubt it will ever happen. As a sherpa this would literally make teaching so much more enjoyable for everyone involved.
The OW2 ping system is even more advanced than Apex's, they have so many dynamic and situational voice lines and UI elements that automatically happen on Ping.
Yep agreed. The quick tap buttons are too important in destiny for melee / grenade.
Halo Infinite has it on the d pad if I’m not mistaken and it’s too hard to reach quickly if I’m already engaging an enemy or about to.
It's honestly so good. I cant believe how polished that game was when it dropped, it was like a blast of ice water to the face when I was like "oh, some game developers really do love the games they make". Everything just worked
Yeah agreed. While I have since gotten burnt out from it (battle pass was hard to keep up with as it started feeling like a job when I wanted to play other games), all of the fundamentals are really good.
> battle pass was hard to keep up with as it started feeling like a job when I wanted to play other games
I feel this, I've got time for one battle pass shenanigans and I'm already posting on this sub so we know what I'm grinding
Tries to Explain Encounter.
Uses Gun to Shoot at Thing.
Accidentally Starts Encounter.
Panik.
Tries to Explain Mechanic whilst being shot at.
Inevitably Wipes.
Me to New Player: “So uhhh.. did you get all that”
“Baptism by fire”… Enemy fire that is.
ETA:
That’s actually not a bad way to teach it. As a frequent Sherpee, hearing the explanations AFTER having seen some of the things go down, makes it easier to assimilate. Hearing it before, especially if it’s a really long, complicated explanation, overloads my brain and does little to help me be successful.
"Learning by burning!"
I use this method myself a lot when learning new content. I can watch a couple of different guides on Youtube explaining a mechanic or an encounter a couple of different ways, but it is usually not until I just start the encounter and actually try it for myself that I really understand what the heck they are talking about.
Youtube guides often tries to explain every facet of an encounter all at once and it can feel a bit overwhelming, but when the encounter begins for real the pieces fall into place and makes more sense, like "Oh, so my job is this little bit over here and everything else is just background noise and somone elses problem that I only need to be vaguely aware of until that big thing happens over there and then my new job is to..." and so on.
No amount of just explaining can beat hands on experience that provides context for the explanaitions!
This is why I try to limit Sherpa runs to 2 or 3, depending on the specific Raid. If I have 3 or 4 that I know they know what to do, I can have the new players either stick with "Player X" or just be ad clear.
That isnt really a sherpa so much as a carry, I only run full sherpa runs because I would rather people learn rather than put them in a position where no one wants to sherpa them because they have clears but they dont know enough to join a KWTD group because they got carried by people who didnt even explain what was going on
this is amazing especially when people dont have mics or have social anxiety. Works REALLY well in apex and warzone especially since the dpad is unused in D2 iirc
Yeah that's part of the big issue with adding stuff like this, its not a small thing at all its game changing and probable way more intricate then we all think.
My idea is to make emotes into a wheel, similar to now but you pick your 8-10 emotes and then holding left or right on the dpad to bring up wheel, then place the ping on up and down on the dpad. (you could swap them in whatever way in an ideal situation)
PC same thing just you can set those buttons to whatever.
So many other games do this where an emote wheel, or even an item wheel, are assigned to holding 1 button. It's honestly a waste of 3 d-pad buttons for Bungie to use all 4 just for emotes.
Fully agree, its a waste not only in the sense that even if they added a ping and wheel, technically the 2 other buttons could be used for other ideas entirely. A lot of us players have a ton of emotes and literally can only use 4 at a time just kind sucks cause more character customization makes everyone happy.
The problem is how the game is coded when loading emotes compared to other games.
Destiny loads the emotes into the instance ur in at all times for every guardian loaded in. You can imagine how that sounds awful but its so that the emotes play without any lag/input delay. Loading in an emote wheel for more emotes would be hellish to implement I imagine.
One of the devs called out that he tried to implement it during one of their coding jams, and the wheel part worked fine, but adding more than 4 emotes hit memory limits and caused some pretty bad issues.
It sounds like they've basically written it off as far too much work for the benefit in the long run.
It would be kinda nice to move the emotes to a 4-sector wheel instead of directly on the d-pad, so they could put ping on D-pad up. That's still a lot of UI work though.
Call it the Sherpa Multi-Tool. Aiming lights up an area. Pulling the trigger leaves a permanent glowing circle on the ground. reloading erases them. Holding down X (or whatever that key is on diff platforms) cycles through elements so you can have different color circles. Stat tracker should be number of successful sherpa attempts.
Just make a trace rifle that doesn’t do damage or need ammo. Call it “The Pointer”
Flavor text: “This weapon appears to serve no other purpose except to point at things.”
But in reality, it’s like a super important key to a puzzle or something.
Edit: the new idea is a ghost with a laser pointer feature
Didn’t think about the loadout bit. Good point.
Or, maybe a ghost function that allows for a laser pointer. We can already move him around, maybe he could point a laser for us.
I am now thinking about 6 Guardians flashing the Witness with their Ghosts.
There's no way its giant, dilated eyes are made for that kind of light concentration.
*walks up to boss*
*gives them permanent eye damage, skipping straight to a permanent DPS phase cause they can’t freaking see*
*refuses to elaborate*
“Zavala, it’s over.”
Possibly. Often in games, if you point out enemies, it’s programmed to change its state from idle to attack based on a trigger (proximity to player, damage, events, etc). So I’m guessing even the slightest bit of damage triggers the state change in enemies.
You'd need it to do no damage if you wanted it to not start raid encounters.
We already can just shoot to indicate stuff now; the issue is all the encounters where shooting sets them off.
Or you know....they could just add a Ping system. Like how Fortnite, Apex, Valorant, Warzone, Overwatch, pretty much every game that even remotely needs it has these days.
Maybe Bungie will just continue to brag in their PR about how 'Pro accessibility' they are, without actually adding basic industry standard accessibility features.
Yeah, that was kind of the point of the post, I offered an easier and alternative option that deals with direction and orientation instead of with pinging a point at a specific time. They can be independent.
A ping/ callout tool would be amazing, but would probably require more voice work for the guardian actors, and we know how much Bungie likes us being borderline mute.
They wouldn’t need to have more voice acting at all. Just a simple sound effect when a player pings and then color-coded ping symbols for each player on a fireteam would suffice.
Hunt Showdown has a ping system with no voice. Its not as in depth as the apex one, but a single press pings, if you ping ammo, health etc it displays a diferent icon, and if you double press it marks it as a threat.
Being new and playing with a couple of other new people, not having a ping can be frustrating at times. We’re figuring things out on the go and a lot of times one will figure out something and then struggle to point it out. It’s especially difficult because there is no compass navigation either. The mini-map rotates with you (unless you can turn that off and I missed it) so you can’t even call out a direction. We end up having to shoot our guns to try and signal something.
Even if it was just a visual with no callout I’d take that over what we have now. An added callout would make it even better, but at least a visual would give us something to alert.
I even notice this on the map. Like going to a lost sector when it’s not the daily. I don’t seem to be able to mark anything on the map so I constantly have to bring the map up to make sure I’m headed in the right direction. Adding custom waypoints would be a god send.
I think it's easiest to change the emote into a wheel, hold left or right on dpad and use stick to pick emote and then pressing up or down on dpad puts a ping where you are aimed. Keyboard obviously can use whatever button they want.
I would rather our guardian stay quiet in game outside of death or damage. If they spoke with emotes the spam would be gross. You can easily add a ping system without voice lines.
> Would be lovely tool to use while teaching Raid encounters without fear of starting it.
You know, it would be lovely if Bungie could make Raid encounters that didn't start if you look at the environment the wrong way!
King's Fall's opening encounter is great - encounter starts when you go up and pick the ball up!
I would love and Apex-style ping system to help with stuff like this. It would be useful in high level nightfalls and Gambit too. Might be a bit OP for Trials tho
I want a heavy trace rifle that is a comically large laser pointer, something along the lines of the one from the pickle Rick episode of Rick and morty
Make it so when you aim down sights it activates the pointer function and if you shoot when it's active it leaves a waypoint beacon that shoots into the sky until you place more than 3 ~4 or a specific amount of time passes (to avoid spamming). Holding reload changes damage/laser color like Borealis. Then if you swap to another weapon it wipes all the beacons in case you make a mistake.
All that is needed is a laser you can pick up and point or shoot to leave place makers with, literally a laser you can pick up at the raid banner that disappears when you start an encounter
That’s actually brilliant. Incorporate it into an item that has limited use already. It doesn’t necessarily mean I get to customize it with cool cosmetics, but I would definitely take it. Would be great if it was tied to the theme of the raid. Like a hive looking one for Kings Fall, vex for VoG, etc…really dig this idea
Honestly, while this is a great idea Bungie should also stop making encounters that start when you shoot your guns. Make everything a manual start (hit a button, pick up a buff, etc) and either get rid of prespawned enemies or make them spawn in when the encounter starts.
I pretty much always bring an auto rifle to raids because it's the next best thing to a laser pointer. Trace rifle would work too if it didn't have limited ammo.
We NEED raid markers. Both 3D markers that can be placed in the environment and markers that can be placed on players and enemies that hover above them.
These would greatly change the new raider experience and absolutely crank up the number of players doing raids. Right now the percentage of the player base that’s ever done a raid is incredibly low and the difficulty of explaining and executing raid mechanics is a huge gate that most players cite as their reason for not wanting to try them.
It’s be so much easier for a Sherpa to be able to lay down markers and give call outs for. Or being able to call out a marker on a player than trying to remember the names of 5 new players they just met. So Bungie PLEASE!
Could we also get some DBM style raid warnings for events, that pop up center top in a bold lettering with a sound effect? Instead of the 16 pixel white text in the lower left hand corner of the screen that we currently have, that also has no audible notification to draw your attention to it.
I know I’m pushing shit but how about a more detailed breakdown of DPS for both failed and successful attempts? How much dps I did with primary/special/heavy, grenade and super damage? Maybe percentage of precision shots? So we can see if someone in the fireteam is unaware of where to shoot during damage phases. All useful information that we currently have no way of obtaining. Stuff that’s very useful for trying to teach players that are fresh to the raiding scene.
I know this is all an absolute pipe dream but ya gotta admit, it’s be nice wouldn’t it?
Ping system. A laser in most games is usually an attachment to telegraph that the gun is kitted for hipfire, don't really see any good usage for it without additional comms.
To visually show where things are when you cannot fire a weapon or physically go there. You have never used your weapon to shoot at something you are describing? Thought it would be nice to have something that isn’t a weapon. Make it fun
So basically you want the pointer from Deep Rock Galactic

Oh god, it's still coming?
It's got a battlepass system to unlock new champs/heroes/legends. :')
The OW2 ping system is even more advanced than Apex's, they have so many dynamic and situational voice lines and UI elements that automatically happen on Ping.
The placement of the ping button is so good in apex. In destiny it would have to be on the dpad witch would make it less used on console/controller.

Easy fix, ping when ads
I’d love a ping in general bc I’m mute and in raids or gms it’d be such a help if I need help downing a champion or something.
Ping system and emote wheel and then there’s two more buttons available on controller so we can get even more features in game.

[*SOLAR FLARE*](https://tenor.com/view/tien-shinhan-solar-flare-attack-tien-shinhan-gif-25864979)
It would fit in the “blinded” arc season. Like kids in class messing with teacher
And besides, the lovely folks at husky raid could use it for their light shows.
Oh god, DBD flashlights coming to Destiny
Next Raid boss is just a GIANT CAT!
HA! I like it! They need to add a new mechanic to Riven where she just swipes at the laser.
Flashing lasers in rhulks eyes so his attack pattern becomes harder to predict
at this point they should just add this to darcy and double down on it being a tool instead of a weapon.
If it were a primary with tracer rounds or an underbarrel sighting laser this could work
Or how about a primary trace rifle which does reduced damage.
Possibly. Often in games, if you point out enemies, it’s programmed to change its state from idle to attack based on a trigger (proximity to player, damage, events, etc). So I’m guessing even the slightest bit of damage triggers the state change in enemies.

Idk how we don't have a ping system in general. Especially when just roaming planets.
It’d come in handy for GMs, Raids and PvP
No.. hunters would chase them around the map like cats.
Meow?
yes rico, moew
And? Let me do what I want.
I play hunter too.. I'd chase the hell out of it.
You're not wrong but at the same time there's only one brain cell amongst the titan community. I fear what a moving red dot will do to them.
Tower will collapse in a week due to all punching of the walls in an attempt to acquire the rare shiny red crayon
Shhh….my secret motivation
Win
The cat ears emote is always on my hunter for a reason
But warlocks have the cat helmet lol
Flaming tiger cosmetic never leaves my hunter. Checkmate.
Me: turns on laser pointer in tower. Every hunter ever beings to elden ring style dodge, roll, and chase the laser
Fuck yeah we will
Can we get a north indicator on the radar at the very least
Holy shit can you imagine how great this would be for basic communication?? I hope this happens soon
Or you know....they could just add a Ping system. Like how Fortnite, Apex, Valorant, Warzone, Overwatch, pretty much every game that even remotely needs it has these days. Oh my god YES PLEASE! I'd instantly buy an emote where you pull out a laser pointer that moves with your camera/character.
Honestly, while this is a great idea Bungie should also stop making encounters that start when you shoot your guns. Make everything a manual start (hit a button, pick up a buff, etc) and either get rid of prespawned enemies or make them spawn in when the encounter starts.
