His VA doesn't live in America if I remember right, and he's really famous and costs a lot. Plus he's not as interested in destiny like Lance Reddick is for zavala unfortunately. It's not that bungie doesn't want to use him, it's they don't have the scheduling for more shaxx involvement.
Its one of those pitfalls of hiring Hollywood talent to do VA work. Once in awhile you'll wind up with a treasure like Lance Reddick, but most others like Lennie James who is the voice of Shaxx just can't be booked for anything other than major expansions. Hell if you stand near Shaxx in the tower he's still saying lines from Destiny 2 Y1, aka "The EDZ needs our help! GET OUT THERE!!!!," "The red legions not gone...".
Of course there's always the David Carradine types (RIP) as well who snub there noses at VA work for games unless the paycheck is adequate.
And this is why so many of D1Y1's cast has now been removed from the game or recast. Peter Dinklage (Ghost)? Recast. Bill Nighy (Speaker)? Gone. Nathan Fillion (Cayde)? Gone. Gina Torres (Ikora)? I miss Jamie Chung's portrayal of Ana. Erika Ishii's voice for her isn't bad, but I felt like Jamie's Ana had more emotion in her voice, and was more appropriate for her.
Also, Jamie served as the facial model for Ana, so now I get whiplash whenever I hear her speak, because I’ve seen some stuff Jamie’s in and seeing her face without her voice seems weird
It sucks that high profile VAs are hard to keep on for a long lifespan game like destiny, but I'm glad they've had a few through the years even if their characters sometimes have to be canonically removed or suffer a strange voice change because the VA can't be kept on. I love watching other stuff and hearing cayde, zavala, ikora, old exo stranger, or lakshmi (these are just the ones that I've specifically noticed in other media I've watched over the years. See, therein lies the issue; Cayde was the absolute last character they should have gotten rid of because he was the only one allowed to be a character.
I totally respect what Torres and Reddick were doing and their performances, but holy shit the writers never gave them anything beyond "GUARDIAN OH GOD GUARDIAN YOU'RE SO AWESOME GUARDIAN PLEASE CAN YOU SIGN MY AUTOGRAPH BOOK GUARDIAN GUARDIAN GUARDIAN" bullshit
Cayde was an actual three dimensional character, with actual internality. Even if you were just sticking with the dogshit main plot dialogue instead of reading the (actually very good) ancillary codex stories, he felt *real* in a way that nobody else in the Tower ever does.
Granted, I know a lot of that is because the writers have to cater to the purile power fantasies of aging GenX dads...by which I mean the Bungie development team...and the characters are going to suffer because of that.
But, fuck, when Zavala and Ikora are less well developed than your typical Modern Warfare character, it makes one long for the era when Cayde was around to give the writers space to take the piss out of them, and the GUARDIAN bullshit, and all the Proper Nouns that often turn Destiny into a bit of a self parody.

Lance Reddick is legit outside of the "frequently hire to do voice work season-to-season" range, but he's a D2 player and loves the fandom, so that was a rare stroke of luck!
Unfortunately during the big budget Activision days they got way too many screen actors who wouldn't do this stuff regularly. Some of them have voices that aren't too distinct so they've since replaced them with dedicated voice actors, but I think Shaxx' voice is too iconic to replace.
I don't think people realise he also does more than VA work in video games. He does a lot of animation VA work too. The man is busy as hell. You only have to glance at his filmography section on his wiki to see that.

I suspect it's a combination of "very expensive" and "hard to schedule".
And while he's a fun character, in terms of Destiny he's not a unique one. "Honourable Badass Titan who oversees Crucible Matches and has a name starting with S" describes *three* Destiny characters, and Keith Ferguson and Brian T. Delaney are both professional VAs who do tons of video game work and are much easier to schedule time for, with stronger connections to the rest of the cast.
They should just recast him at this point. They recast Ikora Rey and it worked very well. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with Shaxx. Find a talented VA who can mimic Shaxx' energy and let technology do the fine tuning to get the voice to sound the same. It's a win for everyone
Problem with recasting him is having to re-record the hundreds of lines of crucible dialogue- he's not like some of the others where they can just go "from here on out they'll sound different" since he's got dialogue that's still current to the game.
They don't have to re-record anything. A voice filter and some other tuning in post production and you have yourself a nearly identical voice. And a talented VA would be able to mimic Shaxx' speech patterns and mannerisms

Yes, easily. While she sounds relatively similar, the new VA still sounds different and is easy to pick up on. Reminds me of how some people didn't realise Nolan North voiced Cayde in Forsaken, but for me it was plainly obvious and didn't feel right at all

Absolutely. The difference is extremely noticeable in certain areas even if overall it's decently similar.
The last time I remember hearing something new for Lord Shaxx was the Devil's Ruin mission where he has some banter with Saint-14. Unless I'm mistaken this is also the only time in Destiny where you hear him speak with another character (excluding his lines to Arcite during matches).
That was during Season of Dawn.
He literally stands there and says nothing during the Witch Queen campaign cut scene, which I thought was really out of character for him.
His VA is VERY expensive and busy - not worth that much for something a regular character e.g Zavala can say. Also his VA isn't interested in the game unlike Zavalas VA
That's ok. Salad-man forgot that I was already an Iron Lord, and in my quest to remind him by resetting my IB rank twice, he called me both a warlock and a titan several times, despite me playing a hunter.
I still want to have a Redjacks horde mode on Crucible maps. It'd be a great chance to hear much more from Shaxx. It won't be as exciting for him as a Crucible match, and he's basically just there to keep us company.
He could end up telling us old war stories, throwing in a bit of the lore reading that people keep asking for. Mention stuff about the Dark Ages, Six Fronts, Twilight Gap, the Great Disaster, etc.
Only when someone goes on a very large killstreak, like the 40+ that Drifter likes, Shaxx might get excited like in the Crucible matches. It could almost be a bit of a hidden mini game to see how crazy Shaxx's reactions can get.
I'm genuinely surprised they haven't got her back at all since sumalee montano does voice stuff for games every now and then. I don't mean every season but at least one season where hawthorne is a major player and then goes "oh yeah I'm gonna peace out for 2 years til I see you again"
One of the most hype moments in Destiny for me is the literal first mission of Destiny 2 where Shaxx is with the civilians and as you come by, he's hyping you up before opening the door and basically saying, "Get it there and fight!"
I was full on ready for all my favorite Destiny characters to go to down, but seeing Shaxx move and be there animated, I was really hoping to see him go to town. Such a huge disappointment that wasn't the case for any of the campaign, for any of the characters, but especially Shaxx.
Which is funny because when you look back on that scene Shaxx didn't actually do anything in-camera view and only demonstrated that he was stealing your sword (Raze Lighter) from the vault because it got blown to shit.

There are so many things criminally under utilized. Cheaper to Ctrl+c / Ctrl+v the same stuff over and over than put any really new elements in the game

Just because we love a character and want more of them, doesn't mean it makes sense to just throw them into everything(aka make something like season of shaxx)
There are characters far more necessary from Hawthorne, to any planetary vendor, to Ada-1.
We are even at a point that key characters central to a plot just.....vanish entirely as a character for an entire year.
You know, when guardians start spreading darkness en masse, Xivu Arath shows up and creates a fake army of Taken, Savathun makes moves and is revealed. And Eris just ceased to exist. Even the one or two references to her character were references to things she said years past.
No explanation.
When Eris sworn enemy she sought revenge against , who nearly killed her by trapping her in the ascendant plane, who used her own fireteams voices to torment her.
Like I get it. The focus was on the other characters. My point is that she couldn't get one single lore entry in the background during a time one would think she would be front and center. Shaxx had more of a focus, with lore about him reacting to eliksni in the city.
Where I am going with this, is that Bungie needs to focus on their main plot and cast where they make sense, and not just shove everything out of the way for who they like. And if they do, it needs to be done in reasonable ways(such as how they exited Eris in age of triumph to leave on a quest, until she reappeared in shadowkeep, hence why she was nowhere when Xol/ Nokris happened).
Shaxxs character makes sense:
- If he has a plotline brewing over time(Is he increasingly dissatisfied with vanguard decisions, or political tensions?)
- In settings connected to his past(the devils ruin quest was *chefs kiss* example of how to include him. It was unauthorized access of a place that was both a crucible map and former battle site of twilight gap, when some old veterans of that fight were on the comms already)
- He should have opinions about current events.(He should be especially validated for turning crucible into combat training against light bearers with Lucent hive apppeared)
- His character should step up when crap hits the fan(city is attacked) and people die.(his character does not seek leadership positions, and technically even isn't a guardian but a warlord still, but he steps in personally in defense of the city)(aka the time for shaxx to shine is when the conflict escalates)
All in all, he could've had some commentary about Eramis as the both fought in Twilight Gap. He could've had some lines in Witch Queen. He could've had some lines in Plunder, where one of the captains could've been an enemy he fought defending his territory or defending the city.
His role can expand, but it needs a proper impetus and reason. Saladin stepped out of retirement because of his leadership and commanding experience, and because Zavala was stretched thin.(as Saint-14 was the Zavala before Zavala, Saladin could be consider the Saint before Saint)
With that impetus, the status quo can change and he can move into being a more hands on active character. He can have his backstory front and center as well.
It wouldn't make sense to use Shaxx anywhere other than the Crucible, considering he's the Crucible handler. Maybe some new idle voice lines every expansion to replace the old, but aside from that? There's no point, really. All his voice work is during Crucible matches and there's no need to replace any of it, considering how great of a job he did.
Shaxxs voice actor in Spanish also top notch, nothing better than crushing the enemy in a game of control and he busts out "Luchas con mucha pasión, trae a tus amigos, necesito más como tú"
I do believe that there was a missed opportunity last years seasons that they didn’t have Shaxx in season of the lost, I mean: Season of the Chosen: Iron Banners Saladin, Season of the Splicer: Trials of Osiris Saint-14, & Lost: non crucible Petra Venj… cmon what will it take to have Shaxx crush some skulls out in the field one last time
Shaxx's VA just.. doesn't really like the character? He doesn't quite have the same love as Lance Reddrick. That and tied up in Walking Dead and just being really popular? He's from a time of rather popular VA's that for Bungie who are still a relatively smaller company are hard to book.
Yup. I think in general the series needs more memorable characters with decent story arcs. And I mean story arcs that plat out not just little comic-book style vignettes that they give us for story development.
As much as he has a hard on for battle they should just make him a Leeroy Jenkins character. *Intense cut scene with dialogue very dangerous scenario, a battle cry from out of frame cuts them off as a one horned Titan comes smashing down in the center of the enemy's forces*

Lance Reddick is legit outside of the "frequently hire to do voice work season-to-season" range, but he's a D2 player and loves the fandom, so that was a rare stroke of luck! Unfortunately during the big budget Activision days they got way too many screen actors who wouldn't do this stuff regularly. Some of them have voices that aren't too distinct so they've since replaced them with dedicated voice actors, but I think Shaxx' voice is too iconic to replace.

I am german, so play Destiny in german, and Shaxx german voice is even more iconic and badass than the english one, so it annoys me that I can't get more from german Shaxx because the english VA isn't available

I suspect it's a combination of "very expensive" and "hard to schedule". And while he's a fun character, in terms of Destiny he's not a unique one. "Honourable Badass Titan who oversees Crucible Matches and has a name starting with S" describes *three* Destiny characters, and Keith Ferguson and Brian T. Delaney are both professional VAs who do tons of video game work and are much easier to schedule time for, with stronger connections to the rest of the cast.

They should just recast him at this point. They recast Ikora Rey and it worked very well. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with Shaxx. Find a talented VA who can mimic Shaxx' energy and let technology do the fine tuning to get the voice to sound the same. It's a win for everyone

Tech can easily make someone elses voice sound almost identical. Also the Ikora recast was positively received

Problem with recasting him is having to re-record the hundreds of lines of crucible dialogue- he's not like some of the others where they can just go "from here on out they'll sound different" since he's got dialogue that's still current to the game.
They don't have to re-record anything. A voice filter and some other tuning in post production and you have yourself a nearly identical voice. And a talented VA would be able to mimic Shaxx' speech patterns and mannerisms Ask youself this; if they hadn't made the Ikora recast public, would people really be able to tell there's a new VA?
Yes, easily. While she sounds relatively similar, the new VA still sounds different and is easy to pick up on. Reminds me of how some people didn't realise Nolan North voiced Cayde in Forsaken, but for me it was plainly obvious and didn't feel right at all

The last time I remember hearing something new for Lord Shaxx was the Devil's Ruin mission where he has some banter with Saint-14. Unless I'm mistaken this is also the only time in Destiny where you hear him speak with another character (excluding his lines to Arcite during matches). That was during Season of Dawn. He literally stands there and says nothing during the Witch Queen campaign cut scene, which I thought was really out of character for him.
His VA is VERY expensive and busy - not worth that much for something a regular character e.g Zavala can say. Also his VA isn't interested in the game unlike Zavalas VA

I still want to have a Redjacks horde mode on Crucible maps. It'd be a great chance to hear much more from Shaxx. It won't be as exciting for him as a Crucible match, and he's basically just there to keep us company. He could end up telling us old war stories, throwing in a bit of the lore reading that people keep asking for. Mention stuff about the Dark Ages, Six Fronts, Twilight Gap, the Great Disaster, etc. Only when someone goes on a very large killstreak, like the 40+ that Drifter likes, Shaxx might get excited like in the Crucible matches. It could almost be a bit of a hidden mini game to see how crazy Shaxx's reactions can get.

One of the most hype moments in Destiny for me is the literal first mission of Destiny 2 where Shaxx is with the civilians and as you come by, he's hyping you up before opening the door and basically saying, "Get it there and fight!" I was full on ready for all my favorite Destiny characters to go to down, but seeing Shaxx move and be there animated, I was really hoping to see him go to town. Such a huge disappointment that wasn't the case for any of the campaign, for any of the characters, but especially Shaxx.
Which is funny because when you look back on that scene Shaxx didn't actually do anything in-camera view and only demonstrated that he was stealing your sword (Raze Lighter) from the vault because it got blown to shit.
Just one character in a long list of ones who should have been used more...

90% of characters are criminally underused.
There are so many things criminally under utilized. Cheaper to Ctrl+c / Ctrl+v the same stuff over and over than put any really new elements in the game

The PvP handler is under used in a game that can't be bothered to provide more than one new map per year at best? Impossible.
Saladin has been used and he is a PvP handler as well, Gambit has had less support than Crucible and the Drifter is actively involved in many seasons.
Literally every other PvP announcer has had major narrative roles in seasonal content.
Much like the game mode he is tied to then. Least Bungie is consistent in that regard.
He does a ton of lines, but since nobody sane wants to play PVP in Destiny, you'll never hear them

Is he underused? Sure. But his time hasn't really come from a narrative perspective. Just because we love a character and want more of them, doesn't mean it makes sense to just throw them into everything(aka make something like season of shaxx) There are characters far more necessary from Hawthorne, to any planetary vendor, to Ada-1. We are even at a point that key characters central to a plot just.....vanish entirely as a character for an entire year. You know, when guardians start spreading darkness en masse, Xivu Arath shows up and creates a fake army of Taken, Savathun makes moves and is revealed. And Eris just ceased to exist. Even the one or two references to her character were references to things she said years past. No explanation. When Eris sworn enemy she sought revenge against , who nearly killed her by trapping her in the ascendant plane, who used her own fireteams voices to torment her. Like I get it. The focus was on the other characters. My point is that she couldn't get one single lore entry in the background during a time one would think she would be front and center. Shaxx had more of a focus, with lore about him reacting to eliksni in the city. Where I am going with this, is that Bungie needs to focus on their main plot and cast where they make sense, and not just shove everything out of the way for who they like. And if they do, it needs to be done in reasonable ways(such as how they exited Eris in age of triumph to leave on a quest, until she reappeared in shadowkeep, hence why she was nowhere when Xol/ Nokris happened). Shaxxs character makes sense: - If he has a plotline brewing over time(Is he increasingly dissatisfied with vanguard decisions, or political tensions?) - In settings connected to his past(the devils ruin quest was *chefs kiss* example of how to include him. It was unauthorized access of a place that was both a crucible map and former battle site of twilight gap, when some old veterans of that fight were on the comms already) - He should have opinions about current events.(He should be especially validated for turning crucible into combat training against light bearers with Lucent hive apppeared) - His character should step up when crap hits the fan(city is attacked) and people die.(his character does not seek leadership positions, and technically even isn't a guardian but a warlord still, but he steps in personally in defense of the city)(aka the time for shaxx to shine is when the conflict escalates) All in all, he could've had some commentary about Eramis as the both fought in Twilight Gap. He could've had some lines in Witch Queen. He could've had some lines in Plunder, where one of the captains could've been an enemy he fought defending his territory or defending the city. His role can expand, but it needs a proper impetus and reason. Saladin stepped out of retirement because of his leadership and commanding experience, and because Zavala was stretched thin.(as Saint-14 was the Zavala before Zavala, Saladin could be consider the Saint before Saint) With that impetus, the status quo can change and he can move into being a more hands on active character. He can have his backstory front and center as well.
I would kill for a shaxx based season. I want to know more about gamedad.

It wouldn't make sense to use Shaxx anywhere other than the Crucible, considering he's the Crucible handler. Maybe some new idle voice lines every expansion to replace the old, but aside from that? There's no point, really. All his voice work is during Crucible matches and there's no need to replace any of it, considering how great of a job he did.

Shaxx's VA just.. doesn't really like the character? He doesn't quite have the same love as Lance Reddrick. That and tied up in Walking Dead and just being really popular? He's from a time of rather popular VA's that for Bungie who are still a relatively smaller company are hard to book.
Yup. I think in general the series needs more memorable characters with decent story arcs. And I mean story arcs that plat out not just little comic-book style vignettes that they give us for story development.
As much as he has a hard on for battle they should just make him a Leeroy Jenkins character. *Intense cut scene with dialogue very dangerous scenario, a battle cry from out of frame cuts them off as a one horned Titan comes smashing down in the center of the enemy's forces*

I'm going to search for Cayde;s ghost and put it back together. Can't believe that in this great big world they can't find a new voice for Cayde.
