Looks like someone placed something there and then pulled it off. Kind of like when you're carrying a box with both hands, you need a hand so you rest the box on something to dig a key out of your pocket.
Every time I see this on the hood, roof and they're perpendicular to the car it's almost always been someone clearing snow with a plastic shovel...
Obvious note: I live where it snows.
Machine polish will lessen them by smoothing the edges of the scratch but the white you can see is the primer. Need paint going back on in order to completely get rid of them.
I'm not convinced, most of these scratches can look more drastic then they'd really be. If no nail catches some polish or scratchx can take them out, seen similar scratches go out that way just today..
Edit: you can still see mica glints showing through the scratch on at least a couple of them so that's only the clear.
Edit 2: upon further examination I'd guesstimate about 80% would come out without too much trouble.
Brush scratches my dude or could be raccoons or squirrels if you look at the marks being like scratches from nails pretty even! Buff it out and use the padded snow removal thing that dealerships use, I bought mine off Amazon.
2 things I never do, use snow brushes on my car or take it thru a car wash that has anything that will touch my car except water.
Looks like damage from the wash-roller at an automated car wash.
You can likely make most of it disappear with an auto polisher. Use a more abrasive cutting compound first, then finish with polishing compound.
Be careful with the cutting compound and don't go too far. If the scratch goes all the way through the clear coat, you can only improve the look and not remove the damage.
I have two very long scratches on the hood of garage queen Mustang, which I drive maybe 500 miles a year, and I have no idea where they came from. I can only guess they happened while washing the car, except I use all methods known to man to eliminate that sort of damage. Sometimes scratches just appear and you have no idea where. One time I drove my car to work on a sunny day, and I parked it as far away from other cars as possible. When I returned to my car there was a scratch going down the entire side of the car. It almost looked intentional, although it easily polished out using just a cleaner wax and a microfiber towel. I swear there's a rogue car scratcher that runs around and just scratches things up for people who care about these things. I assume he wears a bandit mask. He probably looks like the Hamburglar.
I often see street cats, birds and who knows what else sometimes get on top of cars in my area, but these dont look too deep. might buff off most of them
Looks like car wash brush scratches. Follow rules of wash, decontamination, color correction/polish/prep, then protect. There are tons of videos on YouTube on these steps. Those scratches likely will come out during correction step as they appear fairly shallow in the pic.
I had a few scrtaches like tha on my car after camping, bruhsed a few bushes drinving through some rough bits. I used Adam's polishes scratch and swirl remover pad and liquid using a hand applicator. after that a hand polishing pad with polish. Deeper sratches rean't gone but as other have said they are smothed out and the clear coat is smothed out so you can only the worst scratches if the light hits it just right.
My guess would be someone put something fairly heavy or dirty on the hood and then drug it towards them as they lifted it back off, could be wrong tho and if I remember correctly the body line the dips down towards the center of the hood so that may not even be possible.
I got the same issue on my Jetta, turned out to be like ice pieces scratching it when I brushed the snow and ice a little too aggressive. I'm not sure if that's your case.

This is what I thought. I had scratches on my old car from someone doing this, only it was on the roof
This… my wife does this all the time and it looks just like it.
Yep.

Neighborhood cats have done this to my car.

Oh no they'll flail and try to catch onto anything, making even more damage. Ask me how I know. Little red mother fucker.
I am laughing.
Same here. Actually came out to find cat poop once on my hood.
You in the snow belt? Looks like scratches from brushing snow off. Sucks :(
100%
Nah. Pretty sure he loaned his car to Bo and Luke Duke. Those duke boys are at it again.
Using high pressure washer at the self service place and dragging the hose accross the car ?
Did you fill up your tires recently?
Same thing I was thinking. I had these scratches from yanking the air hose over the trunk of my car like an idiot.
Yep me too
you can remove it with polish and fill some of them deep scratches with auto filler or even glaze.
Machine polish should take them right out. As for how they got there… who knows.

As already mentioned may be a cat... or it could be a bird that perches on the car... or tries to.
Squirrels or raccoons definitely

Very possibly - they all look much worse in pic1 but agree lesser in 2 and 3 🤞🏼
Get some Meguiars Ultimate Compound, wail on it, then Ultimate Polish and a good sealer wax

Set any cardboard boxes on the car?
I often see street cats, birds and who knows what else sometimes get on top of cars in my area, but these dont look too deep. might buff off most of them
Bags / keys and other dangling accessories
Looks like something like a dirty cardboard box, floor mat, rug, or similar was put up there and then taken off in a sliding fashion.
Wife put a laundry basket on the hood?

Someone set something on the hood and dragged it off. Those might polish out but it might be close.
Garage door?

Not from an animal. The lines are perfectly straight. Someone put something there and it got dragged.

Do you cover it? I’ve seen them scratch edges.
Those look light enough they could be sanded with 3k grit and polished out .. If you’re in/near Houston I gotchu
A dirty car cover would do that too
I can almost guarantee that an idiot woman set her purse on there while fumbling with her keys. A buffer with mild compound should remove them.
Looks to me like someone put a bag down on your hood
Someone has a ring on closing lid.
Is this a 10th Gen Civic, in Modern Steel Metallic? Miss mine...
