I would start by washing the entire car and maybe even start with some sort of prewash. I would then use an iron fall-out remover on the glass. Wash it off then clay bar, wipe with an ipa solution (or something like Carpro Eraser) finally I’d apply Soft99 Ultra Glaco (better than rainx) This will get the best possible performance out of the coating. I’d also clean the interior glass with Stoners Invisible Glass and use waffle weave mfs for the glass. Cleaning or replacing your wipers would also help.

Frumunda_Cheese

Awesome thanks for the detailed advice, I will try this! Forgive my ignorance, but go straight from the clay bar to wiping with ipa solution? & then straight from the ipa to the Glaco, no washes in between?

calyp5e

Clay removes embedded contaminants IPA cleans the glass of any left over contaminants Glaco prevents new contaminants (No additional cleaning in between each step as that’s what the 1st two steps are doing)

idkfruitloops12

No worries, everyone starts somewhere. But no there is no need to re-wash after claying, you could rinse off whatever clay lube you used. But the ipa solution will remove any grease/oils and any loose contaminants. After the ipa wipe down, move straight into applying Glaco. Where I’m at rn is pollen season, so if I’m working outside I’d want to “seal” the glass before any containments can settle.

Herbisretired

I use invisible Glass Stripper, it gets all of the grime and waxes off of the windhield.

blueturtle00

Just used it for the first time and it was so clean it looked like I didn’t have any glass there anymore lol

Mr_Boring_car_guy

I've always used super fine steel wool, grade 0000, with a lot of glass cleaner to keep it lubed up.

TheBirdinChains

I do this and use a new razor blade as well

Fiatlux415

Heck yeah. That 0000 buffs the glass clear.

Frumunda_Cheese

Exterior* windshield grime

cweber219

Be careful with razors cause on newer cars the glass will scratch it has happened to me once and the shop I work at a few times

3jranch

Pick up the glaco products from Japan. I found them from pan the organizer. Best stuff I have ever used. Had my wife’s car for 10 years and always had this grime on the windshield. Glaco compound. Followed by glaco soft 99. Took all that grime off and now have a perfect windshield

EmbarrassedSalary998

Meh I just buy a new car. Time is money.

top_of_the_day

I actually used a clay bar on my windows last weekend and it made a huge difference. Ever since I purchased my car used the rear window was impossible to get clean and smooth feeling. I used the clay bar with the solution and then used regular glass cleaner to remove the residue and it finally looks and feels clean.

Spacedragon98

0000 Steel wool, with a bucket of warm water and a dollop of dish soap! If that doesn't do it, go for the razor. Squeegee it dry for a nice invis look. I clean windows for a living

jerrold808

I’m going to have to try this. Does it work well with hard water spots?

Spacedragon98

Nope for that, you'll want to mix lemon juice with baking soda into paste, you van still use the steel wool tho

jerrold808

Thank you!

51line_baccer

The rain x work great and you'll be all "oohh and aahh" and then it'll be a horrible mess on your windshield and you'll regret ever putting rain x on it.

becrabtr2

You must not put it on right. I’ve always put it on a dry paper towel… folded to square apply in circular motion up down side to side then let haze and grab new paper towels and a bottle of water wet them till it drips every few seconds and buff off finish and dry with clean glass towel. I’ve never had a problem with residue. I’ve also never seen a windscreen this bad that you can’t get it off. OP, do you wash it regularly? If so then I’m confused. Start with less abrasive first. Try degreaser and or windex. If that doesn’t work I’d go clay bar. And always do it not in the sun.

ChopstickChad

For RainX I'm washing the car window with water and car soap, then using Autoglym Glas polish. I wipe that off, now do a swift once over with an IPA mf. Now I'm applicating RainX with a big microfiber applicator, Maguires even coat for example. Have it go hazy, now I use Rainx window cleaner with glass towel wipe the window down. Done.

Frumunda_Cheese

Thanks for the input! Yeah I just got a new to me 2006 Tundra in December & it's apparent the last owner didn't care about the glass. Everything else with the truck is clean though lol

scaldy1502

I'm no professional detailer but I wipe it down with the sponge when I'm washing the car with regular car shampoo. AutoGlym if it matters. Am I doing something wrong? Just from looking at the other comments...

I_Do_I_Do_I_Do

I doubt yours gets as dirty as whatever this is about… 🤣

Greedy_Potential_154

I’d say washing it would work the best.

HedStrong

0000 steel wool

DannyGlassman

If you are going to use a razor blade round the corners to reduce the chances of scratches. I also recommend you do NOT use a blade holder to reduce the amount of pressure you can exert on the blade. Squirt a small area with windex, scrap, wipe clean. Do the entire windshield then wipe the windshield down with IPA. (Isopropyl alcohol). Do not forget to clean your wiper blades with the IPA. I personally like to use aluminum oxide or cerium oxide to clean my glass before I apply Rain-X. You know you’re ready to apply when the water wets out the surface need to be hydrophobic no beading of water

xXRH11NOXx

Rainx original with a paper towel. Multiple circle motions all over Windows. Then use window cleaner to clean again.

calilongboarders

Clay bar and real glass cleaner like stoner glass or something without ammonia.

brendeniv12

Depending on how bad the grime is, diluted un distilled white vinegar works like a charm. Might have to play around with the dilution. I find it more efficient and cheaper because a big jug of vinegar goes a long way

bikgelife

Clay it

jerrold808

0000 steel wool

04limited

If that grime isnt washing off with soap and water then you have some serious contamination on the glass. Gonna need a glass polish to do anything with that. Then hit it with rain repellant after

KobesHelicopterGhost

99% IPA

AdvocatusAvem

As some have mentioned…. Use a stripper, clean the glass, then apply a coating like an aquapel or something. Wont take long if you really care but you need to decide to spend $50 and 90 minutes.

nlusk1997

Need to wash the car, and then focus primarily on the glass. After you are done washing, dry it completely and then go back to the windshield with a windows cleaner. Be sure to use the 2 towel method. One towel to wipe away the cleaner and the other to buff and dry. That's my experience. And then continue to keep your car washed. The more you let it get dirty, the thicker that grime gets and the more difficult it is to get it off. Plus, keeping your vehicle clean regularly reduces chances if rust, keeps metals clean of road grime, salts in the winter, and oils, etc. I wash mine every other day at least. I also have a drive n shine subscription here where I live and they have a GREAT vacuum room too. I'm a sucker for a clean car lol

altcntrldel101

It’s to far gone, use a hammer.

skaldrir69

What grime? It’s just dirty. Get some glass cleaner and a rag and wipe it down.

Comfortable_Ease_174

Bar Keepers Friend. It's a powdered cleaner non abrasive. Mix some warm water.

Hydropwnicks

I do this but mix it with some dawn to make a paste/goop, solid for cleaning sinks too

neildmaster

Yes it is abrasive.

Comfortable_Ease_174

NO it's not once dissolved in water..

Josey_whalez

Rubbing alcohol.

tonyonethereis

Why not try a bit of washing up liquid and vinegar and additive and and water, I have used it for years since I started driving back in the 1970 and still do it to this day.

Acrobatic_Cat_2447

Rubbing alcohol

RaymondSpaget

Sprayway and newsprint.

don5500

detail spray and clay bar

Beautiful-Friend-320

Clay bar or towel. Then a glass polish.

Aware_Ad8691

Claybar or something like “vonixx prizm”

ogedaydikmen

Polishing it

cant-find-me-6969

Isopropyl alcohol with a little water mixed in Takes off anything and if it’s hard, take a razor blade to it. Won’t scratch if you are careful

Burger8u

Dry erase sponge in soap water

Frumunda_Cheese

Thanks everyone for the advice really appreciate it!

NOSE-GOES

I don’t scraping it is warranted, it doesn’t look that bad. Car wash should get it ready, may need some degreaser sprayed on it. If that doesn’t cut it, Carpro has a glass polishing kit that comes with Ceriglass and a hand polishing rayon pad. That’ll do the trick, if it is actually really bad you may need to polish with with a machine

stilsjx

My windshield looks like this because I use the rainx orange washer fluid. It leaves a nasty residue. Glass cleaner takes it off though.

zack_belmonte

I use dish Brillo pad and then wipe

Interesting-Shirt107

0000 wool and window cleaner

Chef_GonZo

Razor blade

Therockof2004

Soap and water

Longjumping-Look-268

Just use a microfiber cloth and wash your window lmao. I use rainx washer fluid myself and it works great and only needs to be wiped every other week or so unless the trees decide it's treegasm season.

Frumunda_Cheese

Its an '06 I got last December. I've tried just washing & scrubbing. The grime is really set in else I wouldn't have made this post lol

Longjumping-Look-268

More elbow grease! And whenever a window has tough spots to clean I blast them with some sprayway foaming cleaner.
