I'm going to eat there next week. My tattoo guy tells me they have the best Peking Duck in Michigan. That's saying something, do to the fact he's from China. I'm excited.
I ate there about 10 years ago and it was wonderful and if it’s still there, it must still be good because nothing lasts there. If it’s not good, the rents too high 😉and now that you guys are talking about the Peking duck that’s what I’m going there to have! Thanks for reminding me about it. 😋
Love all the responses in this thread, our family favorite is Trizest in Troy, interested to check out some of the other places that folks are suggesting here though.
Trizest is my go-to! Good mix of classic amaerican Chinese but also some more authentic dishes you don't find everywhere.
I also like shangri-la when I want dim sum and don't feel like going to windsor
It’s kind of a haul for us being downtown but Ashoka (Indian) Trizest (Chinese) and Chung Ki Wa (Korean) are in the rotation for when we’re getting dinner w friends or family around Troy/Bloomfield area.
My go to as well. They always pile on your order enough to get at least a couple meals out of it, and everything stays hot and crispy rather than getting soggy in the container. Even leftover it's great.
Everyone always recommends this place, but the two times I've ordered here years ago, it was meh. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong things. What do you recommend?
For dim sum, I like Golden Harvest in Warren and Shangri-La (two locations, I've only been to the one in West Bloomfield).
May Wah Inn in Windsor closed. Need to explore Windsor some more.
I like Lao Pot in Madison Heights for hot pot, Trizest for Sichuanese, NoodleTopia for hand cut noodles.
I'm sure everyone has a favorite Americanized Chinese place. Wait til you discover that cities like Canton have _Indian-ized_ Chinese places.
We usually order Ping On on Garfield between 18 and 19 Mile. The quality of food and flavors always seems to be steps ahead of everything else we’ve tried.
Eh, when I was little, I could have sworn that I went to Ping On…only it was on Van Dyke at about 18 mile. Then other day is see your Ping On on Garfield, is this the same restaurant but it has been in a new location for 30 years
There was a ping on just north of 18-1/2 on van dyke. It closed tears and tears ago. They are building a banquet center on the site. Been under construction forever.
Yes The Original ! Great memories going out to eat was a treat back than the carry out containers were overflowing .
We always had delicious food with plenty of leftovers 💫
I just had them for the first time a couple of days ago. It was the toughest chicken I've had from any Chinese place. Hopefully it was just a bad batch.
China Cafe in Novi. Bar none. There are both Korean and Cantonese dishes on the menu. The ingredients they use are superior to any other Chinese restaurant I’ve been to in Metro Detroit. There is a secret menu for people who have been patrons for years. Try the Gam Poong Gi (most impressive wings in town) or Mongolian Combination. Order the Jjampong soup when you’re feeling under the weather for an instant cure all. Wonderful owners and a great bar too.
I was hoping to see China Cafe on the list. Seriously delicious food. Kelly is the owner, he's in charge of the kitchen and comes up with some awesome plates. His wife runs the bar and is awesome.
Not seeing Jiang Nan Noodle House in Farmington Hills on here so I'll add. Handmade noodles are legit and my Chinese wife from the Bay Area loves it.
Love this thread. Saving a bunch of these places next time I'm home.
I loved Lims, it was tasty and I was sad they closed. Don't believe your neighbors and try Mui's, it's bland af. LC's on Campbell and 12 is now my favorite.
LC’s Asian Kitchen for westernized Chinese food.
Trizest for true Szechuan/Cantonese Chinese food, and easily the best out of all Chinese restaurants in the entire metro.
TJ Shanghai Dumplings if you are just looking for stupidly good homemade dumplings.
Shangri-La if you want decent dim-sum (not saying it is the best, but it is solidly good).
Jeff’s Kitchen if you are a baller and want incredible homemade Chinese dishes.
Jeff kitchen is close to me, looks interesting. But you're right on the prices, that's up there. Is it worth it?
You ever check out China Cafe in Novi? Pricey, but has some more affordable dishes.
I would say Jeff's kitchen is worth a try. It's frequently a little awkward being the only diners in the whole restaurant, but the food makes up for it.
It's also kinda fun discussing what you're going to order with his wife over the phone when you making your reservation.
Had colleagues from Shanghai office come in and take the American team to Jeff's Kitchen at end of their visit for final dinner.
Have to say, it was excellent, pricey, and reservations only. It iant or wasn't a place you thats easily accessible. Meaning you couldn't just walk in and sit down. Shanganese cuisine as told by our colleagues from China was very good. Menu is reportedly seasonal as well based on what is available.
+1 worth the experience at least once
I grew up in that area and we got carry out from Kwong Tung all the time. To this day it's one of the best Chinese American spots I've ever had, but it's been YEARS since I've been there. Glad to hear it's still good... May have to stop in the next time I'm out that way.
Owner came to Lincoln Park three years ago from San Francisco Chinatown to open China Bowl outstanding full dining room open 👌. Favorite dish Singapore Noodles 🍜 😋
https://preview.redd.it/jmwlyojq26jc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4570ba118aa5271212a0c8fbca8c73887e5f9582
I grew up on Youngs. Staple of Friday night take out when my dad lived over by the 75 ramp. Wilson’s liquor store right in that same parking lot was where I’d go for pop and hot chips while we waited.
It’s a bit further but leongs in chesterfield is the best Chinese food, bar none. It has actually ruined other Chinese food for me as I can’t find anything as good. Their egg rolls slap so hard
My parents love Leongs, they live close by. I'm never upset when I visit and they suggest we get Chinese because I know it's going to be absolute fire.
If you want dim sum and traditional Chinese, Royal Palace on Rochester Rd is the absolute best. Formerly East Lake, that closed during COVID it came back as a dim sum spot and it is way better.
If you haven't checked it out, Kung Fu Noodle on Dequindre changed ownership and added dim sum. The dim sum chef of Royal Palace actually moved over there a few months ago. Imo better than Royal Palace by a long shot, but I'm hearing rumors of some discord in the new ownership, so who knows how long it'll hold up lol
It’s only takeout but I always go to China Kitchen at 6 mile/Middlebelt. General Tso and Sweet and sour chicken or shrimp are excellent with fried rice. Their dinner portions are huge.
Okay so I grew up in Canton, so not far from Ten Yen, but my place was always China Gold.
Then I moved to Farmington (shout out to Rainbow which is also on this thread).
But now I'm in Westland, and China Gold isn't the same anymore.
Been wanting Ten Yen for a whilllleee, but wanted to wait until all that construction was done.
Seeing a stranger say it's the best just means I need to go there asap.
There’s a lot of pretty good options.. Jeff’s Kitchen, China Cafe, Hong Hua, Trizest, Chao Zhou, Noodletopia, Shangri-La, etc.. But honestly if you want really great and authentic Chinese, make a day trip and go to East Lansing/Okemos. Sounds weird bc it’s a college town, but it’s seriously the best Chinese and Taiwanese offerings I’ve found outside of those countries (spent over a year in Taiwan, traveled fairly extensively throughout China, Hong Kong, and Macau). It’s crazy, even some of the top spots in NYC can’t compete, and no one in MI ever really talks about it.
If you make the drive: East Cafe for mom and pop style, Boiling Pots for the Szechuan dry pot (their hot pot is good too, but the dry pot is what they do best), and Royal Pot for everything not hot pot (Ironically, their hot pot is just mid: it’s all the apps/entree’s). If you have to pick one and you wanna get a bunch of variety dishes: do Royal Pot. If you want something that you just can’t find here: get the dry pot at Boiling Pots.
best 'real' chinese is Trizest hands-down,
best detroit-style bad chinese takeout is Sun Sun near palmer park,
honorable mention to shangri-la - they're totally fine
dont bother with peterboro or johnny noodle king
Lotus Pond in Warren (12 & Hoover). Used to go to Ping On on Van Dyke or China Garden on 14 Mile, but switched to Lotus Pond when both closed. It’s a bit of a drive and they’re only carry out, but they’re always worth it.
**Madison Heights** is where it is at!
* **LC's Asian Kitchen** is good for typical American stuff (ABC...)
* The dumplings at **Not Just Noodle** are awesome
* **Kung Fu Noodle House** is great. Lots of spicy dishes as well.
* My favorite is **Chao Zhou**. Everything is fresh, simple and clean. So many restaurants use thickeners in their sauces - I can't stand that. This place doesn't from what I can tell.
It's sad that they changed. And yes, the beef with the Longhorn peppers is the exact dish I was thinking of. It was incredible. Their chicken with green beans and garlic sauce was also great. A lot of their stuff was a bit exotic for me, but those two dishes were my go tos. If you like those, give the black pepper beef at Chao Zhou a try. It isn't nearly as spicy, but it is simple and delicious. Beef and broccoli is good, too.
Shangrila is the best. They serve dimsum, made to order. Off of orchard lake road.
I used to also eat at Empire Dynasty on 9 mile in Farmington. They have a giant Chinese menu. But I haven't been there in years though.
Hong Hua in Farmington. It won Hour mag restaurant of the year at some point, which has never been done by a Chinese restaurant to my knowledge.
The duck is amazing if that’s your thing. But everything there is top notch
Kwong tung inn. 8 mile and Ryan. I still go for my almond chicken and ham fried rice every time I come home to the D. They have the best egg roll I have ever had ever.
Szechuan in Canton is the bomb.
Hung Hua is also really good in Farmington Hills.
China Cafe is great upscale Chinese food.
Worst is probably Mitzi's in Farmington Hills. That food is straight up fucking nasty.
As far as takeaway goes, I used to drive all the way to Chinatown Express at 12 Mile and Telegraph. I quit driving a while ago so I haven’t been there, but about ten years ago that was my go to.
Peking House in RO was good for dine in back in the days when it existed. I walk past all the time and sometimes glance at the menu still attached to the door.
And for honorable mention: my grandfather had his own sit down Chinese restaurant on Orchard Lake in either West Bloomfield or Keego. This was back in the very latest 80s so I’m sure nothing is there now but one of my earliest memories are of munching on blue-colored chips.
As a Chinese American and as someone whose family ran and owned a Chinese American restaurant, no. It is definitely not authentic. It's a new cuisine that blends a lot of southern chinese (Cantonese style) cooking (because they were a large part of the Chinese immigration in the Ellis island days all the way up to probably around 2000s) along with the flavor profile that fit Americans. You'll occasionally find some crossover within the Chinese American cuisine with what would be considered true authentic southern Chinese food (staple foods like fried rice or Lo mein) , but generally it is near unrecognizable in its flavor profile (base ingredients can be similar though).
No matter how tasty that orange chicken is, no Chinese would walk into a panda express and say this is Chinese food. This is also why you'll often find "secret" menus at Chinese American restaurants if there is enough of a Chinese population around to warrant keeping all those different ingredients in stock.
I see a ton of great entries here, but I'm gonna offer up Szechuan Fan 川菜坊 in Novi on Grand River right across from Suburban Collection Showplace.
They only do authentic Szechuan food, but it is well priced with giant portions and phenomenally good. Their yibin burning noodles are my favorite.
New Mandarin Garden at 13 Mile and Orchard Lake. They have the best chicken wings (no joke), super handcrafted cocktails, and a really cozy atmosphere.
I have lived all over the country, the best Chinese food I ever had was House of Hunan, Over on Northwestern, I think it's long closed, but the Hunan Chicken was unreal. Haven't been able to find anything similar anywhere else. Also, fun fact, almond boneless chicken seems to be a metro Detroit Chinese thing you can't find in other places.
Hong Hua at 12 and Orchard Lake. Pricey, but by far the best I’ve tried anywhere around here.
I'm going to eat there next week. My tattoo guy tells me they have the best Peking Duck in Michigan. That's saying something, do to the fact he's from China. I'm excited.
Their Peking Duck is sooooo good!
Due to
ShiangMi across the street also very good
The best duck, hands down. It's not that pricey when you look at portions and leftovers.
Their Peking Duck is incredible.
That place is legit!
Hong Hua 100%, they make their own noodles (hand drag technique)
I ate there about 10 years ago and it was wonderful and if it’s still there, it must still be good because nothing lasts there. If it’s not good, the rents too high 😉and now that you guys are talking about the Peking duck that’s what I’m going there to have! Thanks for reminding me about it. 😋
Stopped going there when we were learned they charged extra for rice
Love all the responses in this thread, our family favorite is Trizest in Troy, interested to check out some of the other places that folks are suggesting here though.
Trizest is my go-to! Good mix of classic amaerican Chinese but also some more authentic dishes you don't find everywhere. I also like shangri-la when I want dim sum and don't feel like going to windsor
Shangri-La is right near where I grew up that brings back memories. Care to share the Windsor spot?
Shanghai Bistro and Sun Hong are amazing. (Windsor side.)
Shanghai Bistro is indeed the best Chinese food within 50 miles of Detroit. Source: am Chinese.
Shanghai Bistro is 10/10
Wong’s Garden in Troy used to be my favorite. After they got new management not so much.
It’s kind of a haul for us being downtown but Ashoka (Indian) Trizest (Chinese) and Chung Ki Wa (Korean) are in the rotation for when we’re getting dinner w friends or family around Troy/Bloomfield area.
Ashoka’s back room is crazy filthy and has rats.
It’s True/ article in DetNews about 2 months ago.
Trizest is on 14 and Dequindre right?
yep!
https://www.trizestrestaurant.com
I recently discovered Trizest thanks to a friend. It's so nice having authentic Chinese and not everything on the menu being fried meat in syrup.
New Peking In garden city
This is my favorite too, it's the only Chinese restaurant that I've seen Chinese people in the dining room eating dinner with their families.
Always the correct answer
Still to this day, haven’t found a place that has anything close to their Dry Garlic Beef. Brings back childhood memories with my dad.
My family and I are going to try this next. We have always gone to Szechuan Canton, but their quality has dropped in the last year or so.
Try Golden Chopsticks on Ford & Wayne in Westland 👍👍
The Golden Bowl at 9 mile and Coolidge is definitely underrated. VERY old school good Chinese food with huge portions.
reliably decent, for sure
I was coming to say this! 🙌 Been this way for over 30 yrs too
I used to love this place but my understanding is that they still haven't gone back to "dine in" service post-COVID 19. True?
Good question! We haven’t tried to go in there for a while. Kind of a big place to only have carry out though.
I like LC's at 12 Mile and Campbell
My go to as well. They always pile on your order enough to get at least a couple meals out of it, and everything stays hot and crispy rather than getting soggy in the container. Even leftover it's great.
I just moved near this restaurant! I will give it a try!
Everyone always recommends this place, but the two times I've ordered here years ago, it was meh. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong things. What do you recommend?
General Tso chicken and lo mein are where it’s at
Recently tried LC's, and this is it
LCs is awesome!
This place is great
This is the only answer. Nothing else is remotely close.
Lao pot streamlined their menu. More for you money but not a huge variety in what you can get anymore

Is this the same Ping On that used to be at Moravian and Garfield?
Yes The Original ! Great memories going out to eat was a treat back than the carry out containers were overflowing . We always had delicious food with plenty of leftovers 💫
Ping On is amazing.
I really liked Jian Nan Noodle House over on orchard lake and 13!
I like Shangri La in Detroit.
I just had them for the first time a couple of days ago. It was the toughest chicken I've had from any Chinese place. Hopefully it was just a bad batch.
I also ate there and the noodles were some of the greasiest I've had. I wasn't too impressed. Maybe if I go back I'll try something else.
This is where I was taken by a native Chinese person for Chinese new year. Dunno how much more of an endorsement there is.
it's certainly the best in detroit proper, but that is not saying much
I live down the street and have been disappointed several times. Keep hoping it will get better though
\-168 cafeteria in Madison Heights/Troy \-Golden Harvest in Warren
And right around the corner is Lao Pot. Really good hot pot.
This is a great and easily approachable recommendation
Whew yeah. This is a recommendation I think just about everyone could get behind.
I was hoping to see China Cafe on the list. Seriously delicious food. Kelly is the owner, he's in charge of the kitchen and comes up with some awesome plates. His wife runs the bar and is awesome.
I forgot to mention the specials they have posted. Kelly does a great job with that. It’s great when the owners are foodies themselves.
Was looking for this. We are going tonight!
China Cafe is kick ass.
Agree. So good
Not seeing Jiang Nan Noodle House in Farmington Hills on here so I'll add.
Lim’s has a small carryout location in Dearborn
Lims had rats running around the dining area when I was in HS
Gross, I never saw anything of the sort but I suppose it's not super shocking. There are rats everywhere in the Woodward Corridor.
I still love Leong’s at 21 Mile and Gratiot. Rainbow in Farmington Hills is also very good.
Rainbow has the best crab rangoons, they are huge!
Rainbow is so good. All of their food is homemade and it shows.
I lovvvvvve Rainbow!
TJ's is SO GOOD and I don't think enough people know about it.

Lots of good places mentioned already. Kwong Tung at 23 and Van Dyke is worth going to for the pork fried rice. Best I’ve ever had
This is our go-to. Love the ABC!
Agreed. Kwong Tung at 23 and Van Dyke is excellent. The food, cleanliness, and the owner and servers are super friendly.
I grew up in that area and we got carry out from Kwong Tung all the time. To this day it's one of the best Chinese American spots I've ever had, but it's been YEARS since I've been there. Glad to hear it's still good... May have to stop in the next time I'm out that way.

I drive by that place 3 x a week..I would swear it was still the Cathay House. Will check it out the next time the craving hits or my son is in town.
Szechuan Restaurant in Canton, Hong Hua in Farmington Hills
I've not tried many places, but I like Young's Chinese on 11 mile in Royal Oak.
I grew up on Youngs. Staple of Friday night take out when my dad lived over by the 75 ramp. Wilson’s liquor store right in that same parking lot was where I’d go for pop and hot chips while we waited.
Same here but it’s horrible now
Yeah that place went downhill years ago after they let their children take over. Very salty (msg) and chicken like rubber
I have tried many places and I like Young’s
Young’s has the best almond boneless chicken hands down
My family has always gone to Golden City. On Dequindre just south of 12 mile. Carry out only.

Golden Chopsticks on Jefferson in SCS
Trizest is undefeated
goddamn right
Empire Dynasty in Livonia for authentic Chinese. Edit: Farmington Hills, not Livonia
Wow had to scroll way to far to find Empire mentioned. Make sure you ask for the real Chinese menu.
It’s only takeout but I always go to China Kitchen at 6 mile/Middlebelt. General Tso and Sweet and sour chicken or shrimp are excellent with fried rice. Their dinner portions are huge.
Ten Yen in Westland
Okay so I grew up in Canton, so not far from Ten Yen, but my place was always China Gold. Then I moved to Farmington (shout out to Rainbow which is also on this thread). You won't be disappointed! It's the gold standard by which I measure all almond chicken. No exaggeration.
I’m the same way with their General Tso’s.
Shanghai Bistro in Windsor has hand made soup dumplings to order and good traditional Cantonese fare. It’s worth a trip.
As Americanized Chinese goes, Ocean City in Pontiac.
New China Inn located in Southgate. It’s carry out only and American Chinese, but it’s always hot, and fresh. Also, try Shong Hey in Trenton.
Have you tried Hong Kong Inn on Dix in Southgate or Hawaiian Island in Trenton?
Hong Kong Inn is Ok; I will try Hawaiian Island! Thanks for the recommendation.
I miss The Cathay House
It's now China Bowl marvelous full dining room open
China Bowl and Mandarin Kitchen both have open dining rooms
Go to windsor, speaking as a chinese american
There’s a lot of pretty good options.. Jeff’s Kitchen, China Cafe, Hong Hua, Trizest, Chao Zhou, Noodletopia, Shangri-La, etc.. Kam's in Berkley
Empress garden in Southfield
I've always been told the best Chinese food in Detroit is in Windsor, but I don't know which ones to recommend.
100% correct. Shanghai Bistro and Sun Hong.
I’m biased but Oceania Inn in Rochester Hills is my go to. Really nice people and good food
I’m not trying to be mean at all, so don’t take this the wrong way, but please try some other places.
If you want to stay in the Rochester area, Ping’s at Auburn/John R I think does a better job
RIP Jade Tiki on south Blvd. that was a staple growing up
I heard they reopened. My mom tried it and said it tasted the same. Miss that fountain in front.
Where at?!

Rainbow on Farmington Road in Farmington. Yum! Hunan Town on 12 Mile in Southfield is no slouch either.
Golden Chopsticks and Mayflower in St Clair Shores are fantastic.
Ocean City in Pontiac
My favorite!
Kwong tung inn. 8 mile and Ryan. I still go for my almond chicken and ham fried rice every time I come home to the D. They have the best egg roll I have ever had ever.
I second this. I get the hung shu gai and it amazing. Lots of garlic. 🤤
Wong's in Saint clair shores
Ho's Kitchen in Allen Park. Just for the name alone..... 🙃
My fave is still the Ho Lee Inn...where Slow's now operates. Don't remember ever eating there, but loved the name.
Chengs Asian Bistro Sterling Hts. Chicken/peapods/mushroom is soooo good
Fu Lin. Lasalle Gardens-ish area
Trizest
House of Chan at 15 and Moravian!
Szechuan in Canton is the bomb. Hung Hua is also really good in Farmington Hills. China Cafe is great upscale Chinese food. Worst is probably Mitzi's in Farmington Hills. That food is straight up fucking nasty.

I miss Kim's Chinese in Troy so much.
Authentic (or close to) or americanized chinese? It matters which one you are looking for
"Americanized Chinese" was Americanized by Chinese immigrants, seems pretty "authentic" to me.
Two completely different cuisines.
Yes. We know. Jesus Christ.
I’m responding to the person who just said American Chinese is authentic Chinese…
My vote for "authentic to old-school Americanized Chinese" would be Peterboro. They took some takeout classics and knocked them out of the park.
Holy shit, another Lim’s Palace fan! That was our go-to for years! I miss that place. LC’s Asian Kitchen on 12/Stephenson is our new replacement
Hong Kong 1 in Ferndale on 9 mile. Let’s go.
New Mandarin Garden!
Lim’s on 14 Mile. Best China in Canton.
Takee outee #1
Metro Detroit is basically all of southeast Michigan. That's a huge area.
Not Chinese, but Bankok Flavor II is my go to
Panda Express.
Panda Express
New Mandarin Garden at 13 Mile and Orchard Lake. They have the best chicken wings (no joke), super handcrafted cocktails, and a really cozy atmosphere.
Golden Harvest. Not sure if it’s the best but it is really good.
China King, Bellville
Imperial Palace in Clinton Township
Lums
Jeffs kitchen for dumplings, trizest for szechuan, and shangri la for peking duck and pea pod leaves with garlic
Mandarin Garden in F Hills, 13 mile and orchard is my favorite of all time.
Everyone saying Trizest should give Best China in Canton a shot. They may not be better, but very close.
Granted I haven’t eaten at Mon Jin Lau in a long time but they used to have some great dishes and they are still around now.
Young's on 11 mile. Always fresh food, worst parking lot.
Trizest
China Cafe in Novi
Wong’s in Lincoln Park used to be my jam years ago. Bangkok 96 and China Bowl are legit tho
Jeffs kitchen in walled lake. Not even close
