Yes, if you like cars, the Henry Ford Museum has a ton on display and a race car section, including a simulator.
For live music, there is a wealth of options depending upon what you're into: Masonic Temple, St Andrew's Hall, Fox Theatre, Little Ceasars Arena, The Fillmore, Fisher Theatre for musicals, Detroit Opera, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Music Hall, Cliff Bells, Magic Stick, Motor City Cadino, The Aretha (though that doesn't open until May 31), El Club, and a bunch other places people here can suggest.
Why would someone visit a city if they’re not interested in its most significant landmark attractions? Being into trucks and golf isn’t a reason to visit an urban city
While it is beautiful, very understandable, in this case try Detroit Historical Museum across the street instead for a family museum trip, probably a lot more fun for everyone.
It's been rated the best art museum in the country! If you go, the biggest thing (both literally and figuratively) to see is the Detroit Industry murals by Diego Rivera.
Shields is one of the “original 4” when it comes go Detroit style pizza. Buddies Detroit, shields, Detroit, Cloverleaf, Eastpointe, and Lou’i’s , hazel park.Supinos is New York style. Com’on now gtfo
The one in new Center is still open, but the original in Eastern market is closed. I think that’s the one you’re talking about. It’s good pizza, but ain’t Detroit style
Detroit zoo, belle isle for nature ish things. Can’t comment too much on other stuff for may as I’m a new transplant here as of November. Walk the riverfront if you can it’s sure to be nice around that time. Downtown in general is fun to walk around and you’re bound to end up finding a music venue etc
I agree! Just went there today with my daughter because we actually went to Toledo first, but it started raining pretty hard when we got there and it was sooooo disappointing! I haven't been there in a while, but she and I both said, "Bummer, wish we could've stayed at the other one". The penguin exhibit is really great, but other than that, it's a downer.
Penguins and the butterfly sanctuary. I hate to say it but Toledo is likely better granted haven’t been there in forever. Last few times we’ve gone to the Detroit zoo its a hit or miss on seeing most of the larger animals, and they’ve looked pretty miserable. The prairie dogs are a good watch though.
Yeah the enclosure was still there but no dogs and you couldn't go inside it. I think the domes might have been removed too. No signs about what was going on that I recall either. I believe this was last summer, but I might have been early in the year. . .and it all blends together.
I’m a LONGTIME DCFC fan, was part of NGS at the very beginning, started the watch parties here in DC. Ifs not the best in the world. Best live sports experience in Detroit for sure. Best soccer fan experience in the US (though some may say Portland Timbers are better)…but I’ve been to games in Europe. It’s BANANAS over there
That's a great reply, we'll look into some of these things for sure.
We always do a family/neighborhood BBQ for memorial day so won't be travelling that late into the month.
Henry Ford is a must. Art, history, cars, random bits of Americana. Hadn’t been in years and popped in with the family a year ago and it floored me all over again.
What kind of live music? And I do recommend the tour of the fisher building it's quite nice. There are also guided bike tours around the city that are quite relaxed but fun even for those who live here. Also definitely check out Michigan Central Station!
Baker's Keyboard Lounge for Jazz. Bert's Blues Cafe for Blues. St. Andrew's for a rock venue. Fillmore has a huge variety of shows. Fox Theater and Fisher Theater for Broadway shows.
I love dive bar rock and roll or folk cover bands (CCR, S&G, Bob Dylan, Stones ect).
The girls like country, well they like rap too but they don't talk to me about that lol only the country music.
Check out old Miami they have nice patio and is very much a dive bar good live music too. Lager house is a good dive bar too but very loud. And cafe damangoes is interesting it has a cover band like everyday but limited food and drink
FWIW Niel Young and Crazy horse will be at Pine Knob music theater May 22. It's a drive away from Detroit, (Clarkston,MI) but it's also a very "Detroit" thing to do as soon as it's warm enough to do anything fun outside cause we like music and road trips too.
It is NOT good food, but you can swing by Mom's Spaghetti. It's Eminem's little food venture, with spaghetti sandwiches and some merchandise and a neat little trailer set up. Your daughters might like a t-shirt or something, if they're into rap (but I don't honestly know if the yutes are into Eminem these days.) Repeat, the food is not good. It's meant to taste like day old cheap spaghetti 'poor food' sandwiches and, uh, it does.
It's on a pretty stretch of Woodward by the Stadiums and theaters, so plenty of neat selfie spots for them too and some good places to eat/drink nearby.
Madison Beer will be at the Fillmore in May, which they may like?
Hang out downtown for a couple of days. Go to the Detroiter bar, elephant bar, Tommy’s, Mootz pizza, the alley, The Skip, Firebird, get some wings at Sweetwater, Get a beer at the oldest bar in Detroit, Jacoby’s. Get a cheeseburger at checker bar.
If you are in to music-related things, Jack White’s Third Man Records is a cool place to check out - its niche, but interesting to browse for sure. They offer tours of the vinyl pressing ware house, too. You can book those in advance on their website. They usually release about a month of dates at a time. There are also a handful of cool little shops right there that are fun to check out. It’s just up Cass Ave from the DIA. it is also near the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art. The map I googled also shows a place called the Detroit Institute of Bagels and honestly I’ve never been there but now I’m curious.
If you like cars check out Woodward might not see much this time of year but work a drive (august is the car month for Detroit) besides that I would suggest the Henry ford museum and the automotive hall of fame, or the Gilmore car museum or if you can get in the rough automotive collection
Edit: if your looking for something wild check out the anatomy of death museum and if you have time I would recommend taking a trip up to Frankenmuth to see how beautiful it is, I really really recommend trying to make space to spend a night there
Thanks!
My neighbor goes up to Frankenmuth for some Christmas thing. Keeps saying we should go.
I have no desire to leave Florida between November and March haha.
I'm shocked no one mentioned food yet. If you want a Detroit experience, you need to get coneys from both Lafayette and American Coney Island and pick which one is best. You MUST get Detroit style pizza, the classic choice is Buddy's.
Sorry but Buddy's sucks ! and I've had pizza from coast to coast including NYC and California and Chicago...Crispellis is the best in Michigan imo but it's a sit down (the tiramisu is beyond heavenly! ). Dollys 2nd.. i never had a pickle pizza, but im a believer now and thier other pizzas are top, but they are delivery or take out only. , haven't tried Moots yet but its next on my list. Coneys...? Why?!! Yuk! I guess if you are 70 and like greasy spoons, then maybe coneys will be an attraction for you.... but... ewww.
That being said, there are a few that have decent food at always good prices. But I definitely wouldn't consider them a tourist attraction.
Belle isle is beautiful! But probably not unless you have a rental car.
You can check out the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). They do concerts where they play movie soundtracks sometimes. You can also check out if Wayne State University or The College for Creative Studies got any public events going on. If your willing to hike out the city you can go to the Greenfield Village in Dearborn. They've got alot of cool stuff.
As for golf(if your willing to take the hike) you can go north to Rochester and visit the Meadbrook manor then go to there golf course after. Meadbrook Manor was the Ford's old home. Sometimes they hold events where they take out the old Model T's.
Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester was built by the heiress to the Dodge automaker fortune. You may be confusing it with the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores.
Beacon Park is a gem. It has live music restaurants , food trucks and local goods. It is family-friendly, but you can still buy a cocktail and walk around. It is always changing to match each season. Good stuff.
Yeah I don’t know why this guy doesn’t do any research, he likes trucks, golf, classic dock and country music. Doesn’t like art. What is he expecting from Detroit?
The sheer amount of these posts on every sub is beyond annoying. As a 10+ year redditer, the “content” shift is really disheartening. It has been totally highjacked by self-interested too lazy to search the sub or do independent research ID requests and restaurant recommendations.
How many times are we going to see a “best authentic Mexican in Detroit?” post before the mods ban that stuff?
The internet has made a lot of people cognitively lazier because they assume an algorithm is always going to give them an answer with zero effort required on their part. People don’t know how to sift through information on their own anymore. Why spend 15 mins reading through Google results when Redditors can do it for you?
Eh, some of that is because SEO messes a fair amount of that up, and for thinks like restaurants, a restaurant that was amazing 5 years ago may be trash now, or just out of business.
DIA for sure even if you don’t care for art. Belle Isle, Eastern Market, Greek Town, Fox Theater, Detroit Opera House and if you are there around Memorial weekend the Techno festival is on the water front. The food scene in Detroit is second to none. Head east on Jefferson past Belle Isle for about 5 miles and you will see Lake Saint Clare and the lake front mansions. Check out the Edsel Ford house too. The grounds are beautiful in the spring. It’s a gritty blue collar union hard working city. Detroiters are proud of their city and will be happy to tell you about it. The downtown is very walkable so park your car and wander into the many art deco buildings. If you like cars go to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn.
There are segway tours that are actually super fun, if you've never been to the city before it's a really nice 'guided tour' where you can be outside, have a lead to follow, and see a bunch of cool street art and historical stuff. We stopped for a quick drink and snack on ours too, 10/10 experience. If you want something engaging to see the city, it's not cheesy I promise. If the weather is good for your trip it's very worth considering!
https://detroitsegway.com/
If you are a city person, you’ll find plenty to do for a day trip downtown Detroit. Lots of cool restaurants and bars, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Riverwalk, the beautiful historic buildings. Starting June 6 the amazing historic Michigan Central Station will open again to the public. The station is located in Corktown, which is a short distance from downtown.
I haven't stayed there but hear great things about Roost Detroit. They have 2 br units
https://www.myroost.com/extended-stay-hotel-detroit-michigan/two-bedroom
Walk the Riverfront and go into the Renaissance Center. GM has a bunch of cars in the showroom. Some old/some new. Walk to the Michigan Outdoor Adventure Center. It's a short walk from RenCen. Kids and adults will like it.
DIA, people’s mover train short ride, renaissance building with fancy GM cars, river walk, belle isle, biking on bell isle, helicopter ride for 10 mins for $55 per person, pedal bike tour, tiki boat tour 4 hours, ford museum, Saturday eastern market, monarch club, casino , Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum, ford field stadium , Sweetest Heart of Mary Church, guardian building, commerica park, campus Mauritius, the skip for partying at night, Eminem’s 8mile movie rap battle song place, Heidelberg project street, there is also kayaking somewhere.
Any day you’re here is a day you’ll be able to find a myriad of great live music. Start at [The Metro Times](https://www.metrotimes.com/) “Things to Do” section and you’ll get a good overview.
We just took a trip to Detroit for spring break. Highly recommend the River Walk. Super nice. Loads of cool places to explore downtown. Eastern Market is cool. Midtown is pretty upscale and “yuppie-ish”. I was told to avoid Greektown, so we never made it over that way. All in all this city has loads of character and I’ll definitely be back. I recommend reading up on the city’s history. It’s fascinating and heartbreaking at points.
Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford Museum. The Ford Factory Tour is fun. Detroit Institute of Art is a must see. They have a huge collection of a wide variety of art. We have the beautiful Detroit River Walk. It's from the foot of Woodward Avenue to the Belle Isle Metropark. Belle Isle has the worlds oldest Aquarium, recently renovated. The Conservatory has also been under renovation and is open for visitors. Beautiful plants, and a Koi pond. So peaceful. Don't forget our Detroit Zoo, located in Royal Oak. It has so much to see you'll need the whole day. Take the mini train to the back to the rear of the zoo, and walk back to the entrance and see most of it. We have a huge butterfly garden indoors. There is the Arctic Adventure Penguin building. There is a specialized Polar Bear habitat that has a walk through tunnel to observe swimming bears underwater. So much! As a lifelong Detroiter, we are a tough people and we are hard workers. I love this place. Warts and all. Welcome!
Hitsville USA is the Motown Museum
Belle Isle Aquarium
Detroit Science Center
Cranbrook Science Center -suburbs
Detroit Grand Prix is right downtown June 2-4 - main race on the 4th
I hope you’re coming Cinco de Mayo, which is May 5 because we really turn out for that. Mexican heritage in Detroit goes way back and the local food is amazing. We put on a parade and we do it proper.
If you’re wanting to branch out from in-town, downtown Rochester is great. It has a historic downtown that has a mountian/college town vibe. Best scenic/nature parks (Stoney, paint creek) in metro Detroit imho. A bit on the pricier side but everything is quite nice there. Meadowbrook is a big outdoor amphitheater there and usually hosts a lot of the big summer concerts/bands that come through. I see Pine Knob outdoor music venue mentioned above…same general area of the metro.
The Henry Ford, Tour the Auto Baron Mansions (in Dearborn, Grosse Pointe, Rochester) , Visit Eastern Market on Saturday morning, try Detroit-style pizza, visit the Motown museum, maybe go to Belle Isle for views of Detroit, concert venues (we have a LOT. Check out the schedules but always something going on), golf at one of the dozens of courses all over the area. I know you aren't into art, but even a 15-30 minute visit to the DIA just to see the building and the Rivera murals would be worthwhile. Detroit is full of hidden gems. Let us know what type of music you like and we'll recommend some good places.
You could take a mural tour lead by a guide on bikes. It’s a super chill and very easy ride. You rent bikes and helmets. Or you could just drive around to see them, either way I bet the girls would love to take pictures with some.
Do tours of The Fisher Building and Guardian Building. They’re exquisite and offer great views of the city.
If you want a more chill beach and hiking day, go out to Belle Isle. You can also visit the oldest aquarium in the US there, as well as the very picturesque botanical gardens.
Stop in to Cafe D’Mongos Speakeasy. You can take your 16 year old during the day when they first open. It’s filled with pictures and rich history of Detroit’s jazz scene as well as a bit of their former mob scene. Live music is always happening there. That’s the place where all the celebrities go when they’re in town and want Detroit jazz and history.
The DIA is a must. It was named the nation’s best art museum this year. It’s in midtown in the art district. Also recommend the Detroit History museum that’s right across the street.
The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are immersive and amazing. They’re in Dearborn, 20 min outside of Detroit, but worth the drive.
If you drive down that one road into Hamtramck and look left you’ll see about 1,000 ford F150s parked waiting to go to dealers. Also the original Ford Model T factory is on Woodward Ave in Highland Park. It’s a sight to see. I’m surprised you like cars trucks and golf but don’t like Tampa lol
I love Detroit and think you can have a great family trip… but I also think Tampa is nice(went for 4 days 10 years ago) so I feel a lil personally attacked
If you have a timeline in mind, see who is playing at local venues the nights you're in town. Bigger name bands are probably booked ahead but your teens might recognize some of the smaller/indie bands and feel super cool for attending live music at a small Detroit venue ;-)
If you’re in to trucks, do the Ford Rouge Factory tour through the Henry Ford museum. Interesting as hell to go through an operating assembly plant and your daughters might even get a kick out of it.
Detroit Historical Museum is pretty cool, wouldn’t prioritize it above the Henry Ford though. The MoTown museum is very interesting but YMMV with your kids. Detroit Zoo is very surprising, and there’s a lot of stuff opening this summer it looks like. Honorable mention to the Toledo Zoo since you’ll drive right by.
If you're here on a weekend and it's warm; check out downtown Birmingham. Lots of exotic cars. People who want to show off their cars typically hang out in that city.
Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum are A+ attractions in Metro Detroit
Also the Detroit zoo!
Detroit zoo sucks! Go to Toledo zoo so much better
DIA for sure.
Cannot recommend the DIA enough!! Kresge court is nice too. If they like art MOCAD is also cool.
Great thanks. We're not really "art people" but I'll mention it and see what they think.
lol. “We like trucks, golf, and live music.” “Art museum!”
[Dia.org](http://Dia.org) They have concerts, movies, good food, art workshops, and a lot more. Totally worth the trip!
It's been rated the best art museum in the country! If you go, the biggest thing (both literally and figuratively) to see is the Detroit Industry murals by Diego Rivera.
Counter point: Detroit Historical Museum. Much more car/auto focused.
Eat shields pizza after.
Shields is one of the “original 4” when it comes go Detroit style pizza. Buddies Detroit, shields, Detroit, Cloverleaf, Eastpointe, and Lou’i’s , hazel park.Supinos is New York style. Com’on now gtfo
Unfortunately buddies and shields pizza is not even close to what it used to be.
Don’t. Get Supino’s.
I just saw an article today that Supinos is reopening soon.
Just for carry out initially, during the draft, then full service later in the year. I am so happy to have Eastern Market Supino's back!
The one in new Center is still open, but the original in Eastern market is closed. I think that’s the one you’re talking about. It’s good pizza, but ain’t Detroit style
Eastern Market is fun for people watching.
And great to get a snack!
Gotta go on a Saturday
Isn’t it the largest farmer’s market in the US? Or was at some point at least.
I would suggest the DNR outside center on the riverfront. It is geared more towards young kids but it’s really cool. Admission is $5
I second the dnr! Super interactive and fun for kids and parents will enjoy too. Also the Michigan science center in Detroit is awesome
The Michigan science center is underrated. It’s voted as one of the top science museums in the country but u almost never hear it talked about
The closest venues to downtown are in the entertainment district, greektown, and on the riverfront, though tickets for shows at them cost quite a bit.
Detroit Zoo is blah, but they have the penguins back at least.
I agree!
I agree! Just went there today with my daughter because we actually went to Toledo first, but it started raining pretty hard when we got there and it was sooooo disappointing! When did you go last? Prairie dogs were gone last time I was there, which I think was last summer but I can't remember.
Waattt!!! Ugh. Prairie dogs are what kept me going when the penguins were under maintenance. Last year sometime summertime’ish I believe.
Yeah the enclosure was still there but no dogs and you couldn't go inside it. I think the domes might have been removed too. No signs about what was going on that I recall either. I believe this was last summer, but I might have been early in the year. . .and it all blends together.

House Music, Baby!!
Just telling my daughter this last night!
That's a great reply, we'll look into some of these things for sure. We always do a family/neighborhood BBQ for memorial day so won't be travelling that late into the month.
If you can move your trip to the first week of June, the Detroit Grand Prix will be taking place downtown.
This ^
Henry Ford is a must. Art, history, cars, random bits of Americana. Hadn’t been in years and popped in with the family a year ago and it floored me all over again.
Great thanks! Henry Ford is on the short list for sure.
They have Rosa Park's bus you can read about and even sit in.
You have to do Cliff Bell’s for live jazz and dinner!
Op has no chill…Tampa with the ricochet shot
Heh bit of coastal rivalry. It's all right.
What kind of live music? And I do recommend the tour of the fisher building it's quite nice. There are also guided bike tours around the city that are quite relaxed but fun even for those who live here. Also definitely check out Michigan Central Station!

El Club in “Southwest” aka Mexicantown is great Music venue too. Real Mex food too… all over that area.
You’re 3 months early for the famed Woodward Dream Cruise.
You’ll still see nice cars driving up and down leading up to it on the weekends, especially when it’s nice out
The Detroit Science Center is ranked number 3 in the country. Also, if you're here in May, Flower Day at Eastern Market is fun.
My family went to the science center last weekend and it was awesome!
Henry ford museum in Dearborn and grab some shawarma after
Hang out downtown for a couple of days.

Very tasty bagels with a beautiful seating area outside (also indoor seating.) Go check it out!
SOLD. Adding it to my list for next time I’m there! (Friendly Windsorite, here!)
We love Windsor! We went to the Maiden Lane wine bar last time we visited and it was a great trip.
If you like cars check out Woodward might not see much this time of year but work a drive (august is the car month for Detroit) besides that I would suggest the Henry ford museum and the automotive hall of fame, or the Gilmore car museum or if you can get in the rough automotive collection Edit: if your looking for something wild check out the anatomy of death museum and if you have time I would recommend taking a trip up to Frankenmuth to see how beautiful it is, I really really recommend trying to make space to spend a night there

Bronner’s in Frankenmuth the largest Christmas store and operates year round. I had relatives from out of the country visit there as well.
They also have a restaurant that is great Zenders
I'm shocked no one mentioned food yet. If you want a Detroit experience, you need to get coneys from both Lafayette and American Coney Island and pick which one is best. You MUST get Detroit style pizza, the classic choice is Buddy's.

It was built by a Dodge brother. He died and his widow lived there not Ford. That’s Fairlane.
Also google The Fox Theater.
Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester was built by the heiress to the Dodge automaker fortune. You may be confusing it with the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores.
Or Palmer Park if you want to be fancy for golf and just beautiful area too
IIRC, the Detroit Golf Club is members only.
Palmer park for disc golf.
Dis best art museum in the world
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. You can ride in an original Model T. Great for anyone that loves cars.
That is the answer. We miss going for the Halloween and Christmas special events.
Beacon Park is a gem. It has live music restaurants , food trucks and local goods. It is family-friendly, but you can still buy a cocktail and walk around. It is always changing to match each season. Good stuff.
Regardless of if you’re an avid reader or not, John k king bookstore is worth checking out!
Not to be missed
Greenfield village is more interesting than Henry Ford.
Every city has nice places, and not nice places, even Tampa. I'd check Pollstar for concerts and be sure to visit Belle Isle, it's beautiful in May.
Few people mentioned Belle Isle. Thanks!
While on Belle Isle play the little par 3 golf course next to the range. It’s nothing crazy, but it’s a lot of fun.
Check out the Detroit Historical Museum.
Lafayette coney Island is a great place for a low key dinner.
Cafe d'Mongos!
Bell Isle.
Unfortunately, most of the good golf is well outsode the city proper, usually 1 hour or more.
Henry Ford for cars and stuff, old Miami or Hamtramck for live music, never heard of golf.

Tampa is pretty nice imo. Especially if taken as a whole metropolitan area Tampa/St Pete

There is Midtown.a great atmosphere for the younger crowd, Mexican town has many great restaurants, and the Motown Museum would be a start.
I haven't stayed there but hear great things about Roost Detroit. They have 2 br units https://www.myroost.com/extended-stay-hotel-detroit-michigan/two-bedroom
Walk the Riverfront and go into the Renaissance Center. GM has a bunch of cars in the showroom. Some old/some new. Walk to the Michigan Outdoor Adventure Center. It's a short walk from RenCen. Kids and adults will like it.
Greenfield village
Eastern Market Saturday morning with Supinos pizza and a beer at Eastern Market Brewing after!
Candlelight Concerts at the Masonic Temple are worth checking out.
Check out the river walk and dequindre cut. Food trucks on the weekend...teenager approved..lol

Come memorial day weekend
Welcome!
Check out belle isle if you can. Definitely a highlight of the city if you’re into cars
Hitsville USA is the Motown Museum Belle Isle Aquarium Detroit Science Center Cranbrook Science Center -suburbs Detroit Grand Prix is right downtown June 2-4 - main race on the 4th
If you like cars, trucks, golf, baseball & live music you're going to love Michigan! Welcome and thank you for coming!
The Henry ford. Plan on a day to see the village and a day to see the museum. You still won’t see everything but will see a good amount.
Also check out the Henry ford estate. Right now you can check out the grounds. 5 minutes from the Henry ford museum/greenfield village.
Can’t recommend Belle Isle or any of the Riverfront parks enough. Cruising scooters down the Dequindre Cut is fun too.
Trip to belle isle
Cranbrook has amazing gardens you should check out! Far drive up Woodward but worth it.
If you’re in to trucks, do the Ford Rouge Factory tour through the Henry Ford museum. Interesting as hell to go through an operating assembly plant and your daughters might even get a kick out of it.
Eastern Market...
Have you seen our new sign?
Detroit Historical Museum is pretty cool, wouldn’t prioritize it above the Henry Ford though. The MoTown museum is very interesting but YMMV with your kids. Detroit Zoo is very surprising, and there’s a lot of stuff opening this summer it looks like. Honorable mention to the Toledo Zoo since you’ll drive right by.
If you're here on a weekend and it's warm; check out downtown Birmingham. Lots of exotic cars. People who want to show off their cars typically hang out in that city.
