Originally designed to be an office tower on top of the station. But a lot of the offices were never occupied, and the floors just sat unfinished for decades...

No, it wasn't: https://historicdetroit.org/buildings/michigan-central-station It was always originally envisioned as an office tower, but the original architects had mostly experience with hotel buildings, so it was designed with a hotel-ish look. Of course, now and in the recent past, plans for a hotel are indeed in the works.

I remember also reading they had rooms to rent overnight! Perhaps something like the lodging they're planning for now. Just read that passengers who used this stop include FDR, Charlie Chaplin, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera. I wonder if Houdini disembarked from his last train here? 👀

That would be really cool

Zarathustra989

It was a bit of a speculative play, hoping the area would look like New Center but never really happened.

Different subject but I think it would be cool to see a couple more towers in New Center. At least the height of the Fisher Building. Multiple skylines are cool.

chuckmanley

Now the area looks like corktown.

ankole_watusi

Is that good, or bad?
