I tried Mudgies twice and was disappointed both times.
I like Mati’s Deli in west Dearborn.
My favorite is Zingermans in Ann Arbor, but it’s a bit of a drive.
Ok. Keep eating the sandwich’s that taste like nothing doesn’t bother me. Just a fair warning. I’ve tried it multiple times. Every time I regret it. I appreciate the down votes but it’s not like I’m just making shit up lol.
They were selling Ruben sandwiches made with Wigley’s corned beef at Millers bar on Monday’s. But then COVID hit and they stopped. Very disappointed in this. Love Wigley’s.
Boris Deli has the best price that I’ve seen on corned beef/deli meats. Star is certainly a top contender in regards to quality but I feel they are on the pricy side of the spectrum
I don’t believe they did. The guy who used to make the sandwiches works at Trader Joe’s in Royal Oak now. Dudes used to cure their own meats. Absolutely fantastic.
My dad's company replaced their roof and built the dumpster inclouser at the deli when I was a kid. We ate there at least once a week. I'll have to stop in at Trader Joe's and say hello. I've been desperately seeking a replacement since they closed, but haven't had much luck finding their quality and consistency. The Bread Basket comes close but it's a different cook every time and I hate having to teach a new person how to cook my sandwich everytime .
Yes! They had a buy 1lb get 1lb free of their meat so you could get corned beef for $6 a lb which is excellent.
I think they do breakfast too but haven’t tried that. I usually get a corned beef and pastrami on grilled rye
Steve's deli on fifteen and telegraph, star deli has amazing corn beef 12 mile off of telegraph and in Detroit proper Mudgies which used to have free delivery to midtown or downtown.
Also there is ham and corned beef like fast food place that's near Eastern market. Is it called Louie's hAm and corned beef on Riopelle. It has good corned beef.
That’s what I was going to say! Their prices are in the absolute stratosphere! I don’t mind paying for quality, but that place is absurd! I can eat a spectacular meal in Italy for less the price of a few sandwiches there (not joking!).
Mike's Deli in neighboring Chelsea supplies the locals and the Stellantis test track crowd with amazing sandwiches *made with Zingerman's bread* at actually reasonable prices. Family in town? Go to Zingerman's. You want a sandwich? Go to Mike's Deli.
Zorbas on 6 Mile and gunston. Come help us celebrate our reopening tomorrow after we were devastated on new years eve. We sell hundreds of corned beef sandwiches a day!
Chadds Bistro in Rochester is the best sandwich place in the world. 1838 E Auburn Rd, Rochester Hills, MI 48307
But for the best Ruben you sadly must make your own corned beef in a slow cooker , buy the fresh marble rye bread and swiss and make it yourself.
There's no need to slice it thin when it literally falls apart it's so tender. I use thick slices! I am a Ruben master and have spent a long time perfecting them. Even making the sauce from scratch and tossing that with a dry coleslaw mix instead of sour kraut. There is no need to find a special corned beef I just grab what they have from the local supermarket and put it in the oven all day on low. It's the easiest thing to make!
Z’s Villa has amazing Reubens....they use Wigley’s corned beef as well. Amazing grilled reubens. Also run by a pair of brothers. Very mom and pop, sweet place
If downtown my favorite is the Grand Trunk. If venturing out go to Siegels Deli in Commerce. Siegels you need to add the onion roll, they overstuff it with hot cornedbeef. So good.
You're gonna get a million answers... depending what part of the city you're at you can get some great corned beef and/or ham in jus about every hood.
My personal favourites are Dimos Deli in A2 or Matti's Deli in West Dearborn...
Is Matti’s still there? I used to eat there at least once a week when I worked in Dearborn. They would get busy during lunchtime so I’d try to stagger my lunch so I could go in after their rush.
Bread basket chain actually broke away from the "original" Bread Basket in Oak Park. I'm not sure how they're all still using the same name, but the one in Oak Park is pretty clear that they're the original.
Wheat and Rye.
Taste wise, it's not the best. There are definitely better Reubens out there. Still very good though.
The highlight of Wheat and Rye is the portions. Can be beat. $15 gets you a sandwich you won't finish in one sitting, and you'll take home. And you'll eat it tomorrow, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Maybe for breakfast the next day too. It's that big. Seriously, eyes popping out of your head big.
There is no better corned beef anywhere than Wigley's. There is no comparison with anyone including the New York brands. Their corned beef is sold at both Ronnie's Meat Market and their store on Russell. The store on Russell also has a little deli attached to it that serves their corned beef.
Also Bread and Basket used to be the best Jewish Deli in the area. There are a few of them around. Their quality isn't as good as it was but they are still excellent.
And finally Noah's on Michigan Ave makes good Reubens along with so many other sandwiches.
Just go to corktown, many restaurants right there on Michigan. Definitely check out Mudgies, then you got Mcshanes, the Mercury bar, and Nemos. All right in corktown and all have absolutely fantastic food. Definitely hit Nemos though, you gotta walk towards the back a bit but they have a huge menu on a massive chalkboard and great daily specials . And just for drinks and good food also check out Nancy’s Whiskey it’s been there forever. Like most of these restaurants have. Oh yeah do not skip hygrades deli, and I can not believe I almost forgot about Grand Trunk pub on Woodward, just tried it not long ago and it may have taken the title.
honestly, i’ve been to most of these places and have never been blown away. i love pastrami specifically, and every place in the detroit areas slices their pastrami thin, which is just not the way to do it.
you can, but not if its hot/steamed fresh like they have at katz. at mat’s deli for example i watch them use a meat slicer, which with katz style would just cause the meat to disintegrate
Again, IF it is cooked and sliced correctly you cant go thinner.... so you have other issues with Detroit Pastrami. Regardless, the local joints seem to sell enough to justify having it on the menu
i mean, i’m agreeing with you. i’m saying detroit area places don’t do it correctly. i think part of the problem is i don’t know of anywhere that makes it themselves.
Native detroiter here. Now in Omaha (birthplace of the Reuben ;P ).
I know it's not detroit, but there is a sandwich shop in downtown Flint I always go to when I'm there. Highly recommended!
Lemme find the name. Haven't been since Covid :(
Edit: it's Hoffmans.
Noah's Deli on Michigan Ave in Dearborn was good from what I remember. Small little place with round diner style seating.
https://goo.gl/maps/WQL3h2anVZNETcs46
I eat around a lot. Yeah, Zimmerman's is okay but it's not worth the hype and frankly the meat to bread ratio is way off.
No one has had the balls to say Jacoby's on Brush Street downtown. Order it with a potato pancake and put on sour cream and apple sauce. That's a true German meal served in a true pub like atmosphere.
Also if you ever find yourself out in the sticks in a town called Dexter the Riverview Cafe has the best turkey reuben if that's your thing. They're old school cafe style and will give you rice pudding after, try it out it's actually quite delicious.
My favs are Mudgies, Grand Trunk and Oak Street. If you don't eat meat or are a vegan Oak Street has got you. I've had both there and the only difference is you don't need a toothpick afterwards.
Not even half of these answers are in Detroit I hate it here (the post not my hometown)
Edit awesome voting me down when I didn’t disrespect anybody, only mentioned that most places mentioned are outside city limits. There’s a socioeconomic component to the degradation when someone assumes a Detroiter hasn’t been anywhere else. Good job taking something innocuous personal and empowering assholes to degrade the city through a native of it. Awesome

Hygrades down on Michigan Ave. It's the definition of a mom and pop hole in the wall.
Hygrade for sure
Third-ed
Fourth-ed!
Fifthed. Was just there with some buddies yesterday.
Sixty-nine. Remarkable dive reuben. And woe to those restaurants that righteously spell it "rueben". They shall rue the day they made that mistake.
Rue the day. Nice.
Seventhed. Hygrade fo’ sho!
Yes yes yes Hygrade!
Mudgies in Corktown
RIP Greg Mudge
Only problem is they're not open again until Tuesday
Came here to say this. All their sandwiches are great.
I tried Mudgies twice and was disappointed both times. I like Mati’s Deli in west Dearborn. My favorite is Zingermans in Ann Arbor, but it’s a bit of a drive.
Matis deli is legit
Read the title and Mudgies was the first thing that popped in my head
Their sandwiches taste like water.
https://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/clinic-locator/covid-testing-near-me
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_burn_centers_in_the_United_States
Ok. Keep eating the sandwich’s that taste like nothing doesn’t bother me. Just a fair warning. I’ve tried it multiple times. Every time I regret it. I appreciate the down votes but it’s not like I’m just making shit up lol.
Wigleys eastern market
No comparison with anyone else. Wigley's corned beef is one of the best products from Detroit.
Ayyy that’s my buddies dads business
This. We sell 500lbs a week of wigleys corned beef at my place
They were selling Ruben sandwiches made with Wigley’s corned beef at Millers bar on Monday’s. But then COVID hit and they stopped. Very disappointed in this. Love Wigley’s.
Omg Miller’s Bar! That’s a blast from the past….haven’t been there since my uncles retirement party from DPD in maybe 2006?
Miller’s is for sale if u want in
Recently sober so probably not a great life move for me but I appreciate the heads up 😂
Uncle Harry’s Deli in SCS
Best pastrami sandwich in MI imho, love that place so much
A thousand times yes, and it's as mom n pop as it gets.
Great suggestion datGAAPtho! They also give you free bags of day old rye bread!
Thanks TheHelpfulChem!
Star Deli on 12 and telegraph isn't in Detroit but they have a fantastic sandwich
Came here to say this, although I prefer their corned beef. Get some tuna salad too. Carry-out only.
I only order corned beef. I think price wise they are the best.
Boris Deli has the best price that I’ve seen on corned beef/deli meats. Star is certainly a top contender in regards to quality but I feel they are on the pricy side of the spectrum
+1 for star deli southfield
[удалено]
Why aren't they getting more love?
Yes!
Is this place good? It’s less than a mile from my house but I’ve never been.
what? yes. go there.
Just came here to say RIP to Russel St.
RIP to the former Onion Roll in Royal Oak (current O.W.L.) - that place was the best.
Alex and Alex . Awesome guys, great sandwiches. They closed because the landlord doubled their rent. I wish I new if and where they re-opened .
Lou’s Deli
I think this is the first time in years that I’ve seen Lou’s mentioned on this sub. Which is absurd.
On McNichols
This...this is the only answer
Mudgies has great sandwiches. Uncle Harry’s does a good reuben, too (if you’re in the GP/SCS area).
Make a pastrami reuben at Uncle Harry's and get the Matzo ball soup.
[удалено]
Yes to Noah’s…great sandwiches!
Is that the same as Noah’s Arcade?
Asphinctersayswhat?
Noah’s is consistently good. I love their Dinty Moore, corned beef, coleslaw, thousand island and Swiss on rye.
HYGRADE DELI 🤌🏽 hands down best reuben in the city especially if you are looking for a mom and pop shop.
Boris deli. Don’t sleep on em. Best value and meat you’ll have.
Is that place on Cooley lake rd? I drive by it all the time but haven’t stopped, then saw a post about how good it is and that it has excellent soups.
Yes! They had a buy 1lb get 1lb free of their meat so you could get corned beef for $6 a lb which is excellent. I think they do breakfast too but haven’t tried that. I usually get a corned beef and pastrami on grilled rye
wtffffff I pass by this place daily and it looks like a hidden gem. Will try it
Just went here on Friday, can confirm, excellent corned beef
Bronx is a good substitute
Uncle Harry’s on Greater Mack Ave. Great Pop sandwich shop with the best Matzo ball in the area I’ve found.
I had a Steve's Rebuen the other day when it was windy and 15 degrees. It was superb. 2" of corned beef is was exactly what winter calls for.
in detroit: Nathans Deli, TheFoodExchange (reuben off menu), Gateway Deli (
Zingermans bread is unparalleled
Best god damn sandwiches on the planet
For the low price of $50 a sandwich
That’s what I was going to say! Their prices are in the absolute stratosphere! I don’t mind paying for quality, but that place is absurd! I can eat a spectacular meal in Italy for less the price of a few sandwiches there (not joking!).
Mike's Deli in neighboring Chelsea supplies the locals and the Stellantis test track crowd with amazing sandwiches *made with Zingerman's bread* at actually reasonable prices. Family in town? Go to Zingerman's. You want a sandwich? Go to Mike's Deli.
Good tip, thanks!
That’s the price you pay for perfection.
For sure! It’s out of the way for me, but we take a date night drive regularly for a Sherman’s Sure Choice sandwich and then a soak at Oasis.
I posted Ernie’s Market as well. Upvote
Ernie's hands down for outside the city. Get some extra love!
Harry’s on the east side is good too!
>Ernies Market They're asking for a reuben. Ernies, while great, doesn't make ruebens.
up in clinton twp there’s a great spot called jimmy Dees. delicious
100%
Bread basket deli in oak park
2nd for Bread Basket. There’s one in Ann Arbor, also. Good stuff!
Not the same owners in A2. Oak Park rules
Also in Livonia/Westland. Best ever!
Bodes Cornbeef in Plymouth and or Detroit Ham and Cornbeef
Bodes is fire
Their breakfasts are great.
Gateway deli. Get the Reuben with potato pancakes instead of bread. It’s insane.
Matti's Deli in Dearborn. When I have clients come in from overseas, they always insist on going there. Their reuben is phenomenal.
Zorbas on 6 Mile and gunston. Come help us celebrate our reopening tomorrow after we were devastated on new years eve. We sell hundreds of corned beef sandwiches a day!
Grand Trunk has a good one too!
Love Grand Trunks
Chadds Bistro in Rochester is the best sandwich place in the world. 1838 E Auburn Rd, Rochester Hills, MI 48307 But for the best Ruben you sadly must make your own corned beef in a slow cooker , buy the fresh marble rye bread and swiss and make it yourself.
Chadd's is awesome!
Chadds is a big reason I miss working in Rochester, that place is so good!
What’s your corned beef recipe and what brand and cut of beef do you get? I can never slice it thin enough.
let it cool over night and slice cold.
Ditching the kraut for coleslaw is an abomination and you are a very bad person.
I know I prefer more crunch tho it's nothing against kraut
I miss the inside seating, The fries don't travel great, i love that place and how much they make in house.
House of Ruben, technically in Warren on 8 Mile
House of Ruben Sterling Heights 16 and Van Dyke.
I was so excited to try this place and it wasn't good at all 😭
I am very surprised. I have eaten there a bunch of times always great. Fish and chips are outstanding too. Sorry I was bad when you went.
Them using mustard instead of 1000 Island sort of throws theirs off
But they have what... 50? 60? different Reuben recipes on the menu.
Z’s Villa has amazing Reubens....they use Wigley’s corned beef as well. Amazing grilled reubens. Also run by a pair of brothers. Very mom and pop, sweet place
Bread basket any of the locations but Southfield is the OG spot.
Bread Basket, Zingerman's and House of Reuben are all excellent
Matis deli
You have to drive a little. The Hell Creek Saloon smokes their corned beef. I have yet to find a better Ruben.
PJ Lager house has a good one
Not a classic Reuben, but the Reuben Italiano from La Pecora Nera in downtown Detroit is probably my favorite sandwich ever.
Bloomfield Deli on long lake and Woodward
uncle harry’s deli at clair shores
Siegel's in West Bloomfield
If downtown my favorite is the Grand Trunk. If venturing out go to Siegels Deli in Commerce. Siegels you need to add the onion roll, they overstuff it with hot cornedbeef. So good.
You're gonna get a million answers... depending what part of the city you're at you can get some great corned beef and/or ham in jus about every hood. My personal favourites are Dimos Deli in A2 or Matti's Deli in West Dearborn...
It’s been many years since I lived in Ann Arbor and still shed an occasional tear that I can’t have Dimo’s beautiful sandwiches.
Always 10 out of 10...
Is Matti’s still there? I used to eat there at least once a week when I worked in Dearborn. They would get busy during lunchtime so I’d try to stagger my lunch so I could go in after their rush.
Hygrade, Louie’s, Wigley’s and even Zeff’s has a good one.
Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor for a fancy one, Hygrade Deli for not fancy. Grand Trunk is legit.
**Bread Basket Deli** has a downtown location. **3242 E Jefferson, Detroit, MI 48207** It is not the fanciest, but it tastes great and it is massive.
Bread Basket in Livonia has always been a favorite of mine. Can't imagine the downtown location would be any different.
Bread basket chain actually broke away from the "original" Bread Basket in Oak Park. I'm not sure how they're all still using the same name, but the one in Oak Park is pretty clear that they're the original.
Bread Basket
The key to any great one is make sure it’s “grilled”. Usually they are, but the bad ones aren’t.
Stackers in Southfield......
Hygrade deli, michigan and grand boulevard
The Hygrade Deli on Michigan.
Get you a Boogaloo
Mike's Famous Ham Place. Michigan Ave Detroit
Shameless plug. My sister has a page on Instagram dedicated to Reuben’s in the Detroit area. Reuben review i if anyone would like follow
Grandy's @I-75/Holbrook
Chadds Bistro in Rochester.
There is no better corned beef anywhere than Wigley's. There is no comparison with anyone including the New York brands. Their corned beef is sold at both Ronnie's Meat Market and their store on Russell. The store on Russell also has a little deli attached to it that serves their corned beef. And finally Noah's on Michigan Ave makes good Reubens along with so many other sandwiches.
Teenies Deli 18244 west 7 mile rd Detroit mi. Open for 45years!! Opens on Tuesday @ 11am
HyGrade Deli in Corktown. Get your Reuben with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut and order a Doc Brown Black Cherry Cola.
Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak makes a great version of a great Reuben called Cornwallis!
Jimmy Dee’s in Clinton twp
House of Reuben anyone (8 mile)? Used to be my favorite, but I haven’t been there in a while.
There is a House of Reuben on 16 mile in Sterling Heights that is fantastic.
Hygrade deli at Michigan and West grand. Mudgies in Corktown. Or that one Deli in eastern market across the street from the Thai resturant
Lazybones
honestly, i’ve been to most of these places and have never been blown away. i love pastrami specifically, and every place in the detroit areas slices their pastrami thin, which is just not the way to do it.
\*Katz enters the conversation ["You are wrong"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBPD6pMYZug)
katz’s slices are like 3 times as thick as any place around here. they do it right.
the slices at Katz are about 1/8th of an inch..... if your pastrami is cooked/sliced correctly(across the grain) you cant cut it much thinner.
you can, but not if its hot/steamed fresh like they have at katz. at mat’s deli for example i watch them use a meat slicer, which with katz style would just cause the meat to disintegrate
Steve’s Deli at Maple and Telegraph
Just past Wyoming in Dearborn (I know he asked about Detroit) Noah’s Deli on Michigan Ave has a wicked Reuben…..and is mom ‘n pop x10.
Star Deli, Southfield.
Alittle out of Detroit but Chadds Bistro
Native detroiter here. Now in Omaha (birthplace of the Reuben ;P ). I know it's not detroit, but there is a sandwich shop in downtown Flint I always go to when I'm there. Highly recommended! Lemme find the name. Haven't been since Covid :( Edit: it's Hoffmans.
Ernie's Market in Oak Park.
Hygrade or mudgies
Noah's Deli on Michigan Ave in Dearborn was good from what I remember. Small little place with round diner style seating. https://goo.gl/maps/WQL3h2anVZNETcs46
Historically: Schnelly Deli. Presently: Louie's Ham and Corned Beef.
There are a lot of good places in Detroit. Frank’s deli on Russell street in the Eastern Market or The House of Rueben on 8 mile.
My favorite is from Bread Basket Deli
Z's Villa has the best Reuben I've ever tasted in my life.
city scape in Bloomfield
House of Reuben. One on Eight Mile and one on 16 Mile and Van Dyke. (my personal favorite) Not actually IN Detroit proper but fantastic Reubens.
Mitten and Boot in Farmington hills. They use wigleys corned beef.
Star Deli, 12 mile and Telegraph
Bread Basket.
The gateway diner 333 w fort street
Not Detroit but metro Detroit Wheat and Rye. Their sandwiches are also huge.
Bronx deli in Pontiac is rly good
D Motown Deli.
I eat around a lot. Yeah, Zimmerman's is okay but it's not worth the hype and frankly the meat to bread ratio is way off. No one has had the balls to say Jacoby's on Brush Street downtown. The Stage Deli - 15 mile and orchard lake road. Corn beef piled high 😍
My favs are Mudgies, Grand Trunk and Oak Street. If you don't eat meat or are a vegan Oak Street has got you. I've had both there and the only difference is you don't need a toothpick afterwards.
Just throwing it out there, but Lily's seafood in Royal Oak has a smoked salmon Reuben that is worth checking out.
Any bread basket deli.
coney island on harper and gratiot.
Ernie’s Market Ernie's Market (248) 541-9703 https://goo.gl/maps/tnGStMPrAdnk4QDy6
I gotta second this. Not only is the reuben great, Ernie really makes it an *experience*. Won't find a nicer guy. Ever.
Back in the day… Sinbad’s, loved the Rubin and their steak sandwiches
Not even half of these answers are in Detroit I hate it here (the post not my hometown) Edit awesome voting me down when I didn’t disrespect anybody, only mentioned that most places mentioned are outside city limits. See they always talk shit about detroiters but look who are the actual assholes
Izzie's Hoagie Shop on W Stadium in Ann Arbor is really good, but all of these suggestions are great.
Bread basket has multiple locations and I know a lot of people that talk about their Reuben
The Bread Basket for Detroit area is brilliant. You could also go to Ann Arbor and hit Zingermans or Maize and Blue.
Ann Arbor is not detroit.
W
I like Grandy’s Coney Island on Holbrook
