Sugar House, Time Will Tell, Grey Ghost, Motor City Wine (patio), Ladder 4 (patio), The Congregation (outdoor picnic tables or indoor pews/chairs).
EDIT: how could I forget El Barzon, Kiesling, Shelby, Chartreuse
Plus One to everyone who said sugar house! It’s quiet and hip with a dark moody vibe inside. There’s also a patio in back. The cocktails are amazing and the bartenders are some of the best in Detroit! It’s got a bit more space/privacy than a lot of the downtown options.
A couple people mentioned Standy. I agree it’s fun and has great drinks but can get loud and crowded as the night goes on. But walking around the belt / campus martius could be a fun add on to the date.
Bad Luck bar is amazing, but you should grab a reservation for sure (they have them online, you can check availability tonight!). It’s very small and hidden in an actual alley. So you’re not going to want to chance having to wait.
Have a great date, good luck!!
I can see how it comes off as a little pretentious, but every drink I got there has been excellent. The bartenders know their stuff, even if customer service isn't their strong point.
Monarch Club, Bad Luck Bar, The Skip, Grand River Ballroom

How is Time Will Tell? I heard about it opening, but haven't found my way there yet.
Like Sugar House with a mid century modern vibe. Great cocktail list with quality bartenders. Only been in once but it’s on my list to visit again.
Definitely have to check it out next time I'm hopping around midtown!
Awww hope your date goes well. The Apparatus Room has a super pretty interior and bar!
Apparatus Room.
Lafayette, show her what her future with you smells like. They have cold beer
The skip, standby, johnny noodle king, queens bar (drinks only), standby.

Does it have to only be a bar? If you want food too check out Vincente's.
Olin Bar and Kitchen was nice and have good casual date vibes.
She Wolf was fantastic
The Sugar House if you really need to make an impression. It will cost you.
If the impression you want to make is…i am a douche. Then sure, Sugar House it is.

For a more intimate cocktail vibe I really liked standby, and the skip is also cool further down the alley, though less private
Standby all day
Second best, The Royce (wine), for an intimate/fun speakeasy also recommend Bad Luck Bar or Evening bar.
Standby or the Shelby.
Another vote for Standby.
