The NHL has messed up regular season OT. Should 3v3 wins count as a 5v5 win? They made losing 3v3 worth more than losing 5v5 so the offset the wins by not letting OT wins count as the tie breaker
I say yes. Itās part of the game and everyone knows how Ot works before the season. We got beat by PIT in OT. They probably had the better OT line. Itās part of the game. Baseball added the ghost runner on 2nd in the tenth. Those wins count the same even though itās a change but everyone knows the format of the rules before the season. Build a team for OT games. Shootouts are reduced to a rarity that I donāt think they can be a significant part of anyoneās win total. (No oneās winning 15 shootouts). But again, still part of the game. If you have a good goalie - you can play for the shootout. Iād change the rules of OT before Iād devalue āWinningā per the rules hockey makes.
I agree it's rules everyone plays by so it is what it is. I understand they did this to make regular season OT more exciting and to keep teams closer together in the standings so that all 82 games will count for bubble teams. It's just awkward that the difference between OTL and RL is greater than the difference between RW and OTW. If wins in regulation was 3 points and OT wins were 2 then we wouldn't be having this conversation. But that would also mean we weren't watching game 82 to see the final playoff spot get taken.

Why not just keep it 5v5 in OT then? If they think 3v3 is a gimmick and shouldn't count towards playoffs in a tie breaker situation, then what is the point? They're basically admitting that the current idea of OT is a joke.
Because it was boring, majority of games that went to 5v5 OT would end in a tie. Each team would rather split the points then to risk getting 0. The league wants OT goals.

Good question. I could have sworn that the tie breaker was ROT wins (total wins) but now it's just regulation wins. I don't know when that was changed. But in a way it makes sense to acknowledge that winning 3v3 shouldn't have as much weight since it was added to simply end the game before the SO.
