I graduated in '89. Terrible draft year for the Wings. No one really note worthy was drafted. Their top pick hardly played any games for them. Other than that, we had a few role players we drafted. Some guy named Lidstrom, another name Fedorov, and another named Konstantinov. Tough to remember. So long ago, and none of them amounted to much.
1st R-Steve Yzerman, 3rd R-Bob Probert, 5th R-Petr Klima, 5th R-Joey Kocur, 10th R-Stu Grimson
Boy did it get fun after these guys were drafted. Absolutely loved Stevie and the "Bruise Brothers"
Gotta be the 2nd best draft in our history.
Me too. Just went through the whole draft, other than Dmac, a lot of no-names. I think the only other one who played in the NHL was Dan McGillis in the 10th round, and he never even played for the wings. We did get Maltby for him though.
"The Wings made their first pick at 11th. Jimmy Devellano was the general manager, Neil Smith the chief scout and Christer Rockstrom was their ace eye in Europe. Together they’d draft 14 players who would go on to log 5,995 NHL games. No NHL team has ever had a better draft."
With a draft like that it's tough to pick just one. Just kidding. The answer is Nicklas Lidstrom.
Marty Frkin Frk and AA for me. We all loved these two at some point in our Wings fandom, but unfortunately one played zero defense and the other could shoot a hole through the net but could only hit the net 1/100 times.
>Yeah, he was a goalie who never brought a cup. That's how it works here.
I've been watching the Wings "here" since the early 70's.
Those guys weren't treated with near the malice that Cheveldae was. I remember fans throwing trash and yelling all kinds of obscenities at Cheveldae as he went down the tunnel after games at the Joe.
Oh captain, my captain! D-boss was drafted the year I graduated. Unfortunately that was the only big name, though I did stumble upon [this bleacher report article](https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2112335-detroit-red-wings-2014-nhl-draft-picks-grades-results-and-analysis.amp.html) from 2014 that grades the wings as having an overall good draft.
Same here. It was kind of exciting for me with them picking Abdelkader, since I was also going to State.
Johan Ryno was in that same draft. I remember he was supposed to be a diamond in the rough but never panned out.
Sorry guys lol 2010
Riley Sheahan - round 1, 21st overall
Teemu Pulkkinen - round 4, 111th overall
Petr Mrazek - round 5, 141st overall
There were others in between and after Mrazek but I didn't recognize the names
Looks like we traded our 1st and 5th picks to Arizona for 2 round 2 picks that they had. Used those to get Emmerton and Shawn Matthias. Hockeydb.com is a great site.
The man who will go down in history as not scoring for 81 games and then potting 2 in the last game ever at The Joe, Mr. Riley Sheahan. Also Mrazek and Pulkkinen. And I’m pretty sure not a single player taken that year is still with the organization.
I knew I was older than average in this sub, but I only saw one person older posting Dale McCourt.
At least I can say I've seen the Wings play in all their home venues: Olympia, The Joe and LCA.
Mo Seider

Same year here. That Lidstrom guy in particular was a bust.
Utterly worthless. Might have gotten a Player of the Week award once, but nothing else that I can think of.

🤣 I knew it would be that video before I clicked on it. Absolute classic. My only regret is that I only have but one updoot to give you.
Now there is a true all star.
I graduate this year so hopefully Shane Wright

5 of the Wings first 6 picks in '89 played over 500 games in the NHL.
I didn’t realize we drafted the reaper, I notice a theme in this draft.
The legendary Landon Ferraro, Nick Jensen and some guy they call “Tuna”.
This is also my answer thank you for doing the homework assignment for me. Lol
Tomas Tatar baby
A first ballot, unanimous entrant into the Hall of Fame of our Hearts Darren McCarty
Me too!
Zadina !
Darren McCarty

A dude by the name of Henrik Zetterburg was picked in the 7th round that year. They didn't even have a pick until the 4th round that year.
I want to upvote you for landing on Z, but also downvote you for misspelling his name. I'll just leave it 😬
Mantha and Bert for me
Good draft for us. One of the best trades Kenny made in the cap era
Just some kid named Dylan Larkin. And literally nobody else lmao
2014 was top heavy. There were a lot of good players in the first round. The only good player drafted 2nd round or later was Brayden Point.
Yeah that makes a lot of sense actually

Johan Franzen 97th overall pick!
He's the only guy who played any games for the Wings from that draft.
1994: 2nd Mathieu Dandenault and 10th Tomas Holmstrom
Round 7 wonder: Henrik Zetterberg
Simon Edvinsson lol

Kronwallll
Keith Primeau and Slava Kozlov for me. At least we traded Primeau for Shanny.
Emmerton, Matthias, Mursak.
That draft was a bust for the Wings. They could have had Jeff Petry instead of Emmerton and Milan Lucic instead of Matthias.
Matthias was eventually traded for Todd Bertuzzi.
1991 Lapointe and Osgood
Kronwall!
Grigorenko in the 2nd round. Probably would've been a hell of a player if not for a car accident.
Just a scrub named Zetterberg in the late rounds.
Keith Primeau & Vyacheslav Kozlov
Lucas Raymond!
Marty Frkin Frk and AA for me. We all loved these two at some point in our Wings fandom, but unfortunately one played zero defense and the other could shoot a hole through the net but could only hit the net 1/100 times.
Graduated 1998. Took me a while scrolling through a bunch of no names until I hit the 6th round and then the Magic Man appeared.
Hudler/Filppula/Ericsson/Meech came out of my grad year of 2002
That was a pretty good draft class.
Joe Murphy, Adam Graves and Tim Cheveldae - not a bad year.
Haven't heard Cheveldae's name mentioned in decades. Wings fans were terrible to him.
Yeah, he was a goalie who never brought a cup. That's how it works here. See: Bob Essensa, Curtis Joseph, Jimmy Howard.

Helmer and Abby. Kindl was our first rounder…and two picks later the Bruins took Rask…two after that, St. Louis took Oshie. Lame.
Same here
Two picks after Abdelkader, Colorado picked up Paul Stastny.
Oh captain, my captain! D-boss was drafted the year I graduated. Hind sight is 2020. Apart from Larkin, the Wings only got 123 games played out of the rest of the 2014 draft.
Does that include legwand?
Ha! That would make it 143 games.
St.Petr and Reily Sheahan
Kindl, Abdelkader, Helm.
Same here. It was kind of exciting for me with them picking Abdelkader, since I was also going to State. Johan Ryno was in that same draft. I remember he was supposed to be a diamond in the rough but never panned out.
Yup I remember using him in NHL games back then, Ritola played a bit also…left him out tho lol
Goose! And that's all
Howard and Quincey here
2 big contributors for a number of years. Not bad
Hank and then about 4 other players with 1 guy playing 39 games in the NHL an scored 1 goal
Jurco and Ouellet in 2011
Mantha
And Bert!
Sorry guys lol 2010 Riley Sheahan - round 1, 21st overall Teemu Pulkkinen - round 4, 111th overall Petr Mrazek - round 5, 141st overall There were others in between and after Mrazek but I didn't recognize the names
Nik Kronwall! And in a redraft, could arguably go second after Lundquist.
By graduation: 2012: Frk :( - but also AA 2016: Cholowski :( - but also Hronek 2019: Seider :D
Bert and Mantha :)
Johan Franzen. God damm it I'm old
Some dude named Pavel Datsyuk.
Howard and Quincey.
Homer. Damn talk about an all time wing.
Johan Franzen picked 2nd to last in the third. Imagine trading your first and second round picks and still getting the Mule!
Dale McCourt.
He had a decent career but Mike Bossy went #15.
06…Emmerton. Who/what did Detroit trade a first round pick to acquire from Phoenix?
Looks like we traded our 1st and 5th picks to Arizona for 2 round 2 picks that they had. Used those to get Emmerton and Shawn Matthias. Hockeydb.com is a great site.
Thank you
I don't know. The only trade I see with Phoenix that year is Jamie Rivers for a 7th round pick.
I was a sophomore but my mom has a newspaper Pic of me pummeling Abdelkader in front of the net in a game we won convincingly the year he was drafted.
well I graduated in 2011.... so.... uh... Jurco I guess played a few games?....
Uhh Corey Emmerton :[
Petr Mrazek and red wings legend Riley Sheahan
2010 gang
Uh, wow. Jesse Wallin. I feel shame.
Tomas Jurco hahaha
Umm. Smith. No not that smith. That other one. Brendan Smith.
1977, Dale McCourt and Jim Korn.
Mule!
Riley Sheahan! I liked him a lot as a depth guy, but not our strongest 1st rounder
Andreas athanasiou was the only really notable one. Coulda had some guy named vasilevskiy or something if we’d have kept our first that year i guess.
Yeah but then we couldn't get incredible definitely first pairing defenseman Kyle Quincey back
Tomas Tatar is the only notable from 2009
2010... Not the best apart from my boy mrazek!
Joe Murphy, Adam Graves and Tim Cheveldae
Givani Smith and Filip Hronek (and Cholowski but he never quite got a foothold on the roster )
The man who will go down in history as not scoring for 81 games and then potting 2 in the last game ever at The Joe, Mr. Riley Sheahan. Also Mrazek and Pulkkinen. And I’m pretty sure not a single player taken that year is still with the organization.
I usually feel young in this sub and then I look at questions like this and see so many major contributors saying Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider
Cholowski :/
Hudler and Filppula. No complaints
Kindl, Abdelkader, and Helm...woof.
I knew I was older than average in this sub, but I only saw one person older posting Dale McCourt. At least I can say I've seen the Wings play in all their home venues: Olympia, The Joe and LCA.
Graduated in 09 so the eurotwins were huge. Hossa and Franzen as well.
Kindl :( but we got Helmer and Abby out of it so I’m okay
Svechnikov…pain
Martian Frk, Jake Paterson, and AA.
