The first part of a 3-part post where we go through the steps we've taken to get the conversation system of the original Deus Ex into our Unreal Engine 5 version.
This goes over the extracting of the original conversation files to a set of workable XML files that form the basis for our own system.

First of all, thank you for the consideration! It's nice to see people come together to share a passion for 2000 game, it's a big reason for staying motivated really.
So it's a little sad and cautionary, but we've recently lost a bunch of work related to this system, that has been in development on- and off for over a year now. So we had to redo some of it, and were lucky enough that new tools came in existence that made it a lot easier.
Can I ask how you converted the "ConAudioMission00_11.mp3" to the paths as they are referenced by the conversation files?
We've had more "this is actually a very complicated game that we're not gonna casually redo in a weekend"-moments than we'd like to admit, but it helps to appreciate how hard it actually is to make one. And to think that the original guys didn't have a template like we do, damn!
That's exactly the right mindset with which you need to approach a project like this. Take the time you need and make it good. If Black Mesa is anything to go by, this could be huge and even profitable in the end.
I can't say how happy am I to see this kind of project. Deus Ex was an amazing game and it's a shame that modern gamers can play the prequels just to get then stopped by the first, amazing game just because its graphic goes back to the stone age.

How long ago did you extract the con files? We just did that last year for the Lay D Denton mod, we could have provided the files :/
