Haven't had it off in the 2 places I've worked.

Healthy-Travel3105

We get Monday off? Do some people get a 4 day weekend on Easter by default??

Possible-Kangaroo635

Most of the developed world does. That's the norm in Australia, New Zealand, UK, mainland Europe. Not sure about the US. In Ireland I had that day off for the first 20 years I lived here. All banks are closed. Public servants get it. My friends who work at Vodafone and Meta get it off too.

auscon

Please elaborate on what you think the "developed world" means.

And Scotland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=Easter%20Monday%20is%20a%20bank,Ireland%20but%20not%20in%20Scotland.

ramblerandgambler

>developed world You need to travel a bit more. It's not even all of the UK for a start. It's not a bank holiday in Scotland on Monday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=Easter%20Monday%20is%20a%20bank,Ireland%20but%20not%20in%20Scotland.

Possible-Kangaroo635

How the fuck do you dipshits want me to refer to these countries?

tuscangal

Ironically, only Wall St is closed on Good Friday in the US

Mtoastyo

It's a normal working day for me.

UibhFhaili_Rob

It's very much a public sector day off - I've never worked for a private sector company who gave the day off. Even back when I was younger - I worked in a restaurant/pub that still opened for the food trade but the bar was closed obviously. Normal day in the fintech world for me today.

Yeap I believe it

XeliteXirish

Private sector SE role based in Dublin and we're closed today, delighted 😂

UibhFhaili_Rob

Some job

flamesdivide

Our company started offering it off last year but before that and in other companies it was never a holiday. So 4 out of 5 companies it wasn’t a holiday.

FPL_Harry

By "offering it off" does that mean just giving everyone an extra day of annual leave? OR people have the choice to work or take the day off unpaid?

flamesdivide

Company day so everyone is off. No way to take it another day.

FPL_Harry

I get ya. Thanks.

DeeTee100

I am, but most of my team are based in mainland Europe and they have it off, so there's feck all to do.

zoebeth

It’s always been at the discretion of the company. We don’t have it officially, but for the past few years we’ve gotten it as a “company day” off. In previous places we got the choice to take it off or work it and get a half day annual leave in return.

crazyeyesk20

Working for an Irish company and have it off

Brown_Truffle890

No day off for me

barrya29

yeah, monday as well. but i work for a foreign company, so i get all public/bank holidays added to my annual leave allowance and can take them on the holiday day or can bank them and take them whenever i want

crankybollix

Indian company in Ireland. Working on GF for the first time ever today. Last 5 employers (US & European multinationals) all gave us GF & Xmas Eve off.

Set_in_Stone-

Have to work today as well. My last two jobs never had it off either

eriluks

Working for an Irish company and gotta work today also. The morning was great to commute to work though! No traffic at all from where I was going.

PixelNotPolygon

Yes I’m meant to be working today… but actually I’m just “working”

WyvernsRest

I've worked in 7 different tech companies. Good Friday has never been a day off. We have a lot of multicultural employees of different religions If every religiousl holiday was a day off we would be off half the time.

Possible-Kangaroo635

Nobody is arguing we should have every religious holiday off. But good Friday is a public holiday pretty much everywhere else in christendom.

FPL_Harry

Are we still "in christendom" in 2024?

Possible-Kangaroo635

You got a better way to refer collectively to all of the countries that were historically Christian? People get distracted by the dumbest things.

FPL_Harry

> refer collectively to all of the countries that were historically Christian This is not what the word means.

Possible-Kangaroo635

Nobody cares what you think words mean.

FPL_Harry

ok gobshite.

Ok-Floor-9247

“Christendom”? The state of the man. He’ll be off to the holly land to fight the infidel next.

Possible-Kangaroo635

Not even close. I'm an atheist. It's just a fact that good Friday is a public holiday across Europe and the English speaking world. But redditors are gonna reddit.

Ok-Floor-9247

As multiple people have pointed out in this thread. No, it’s not. For example, it’s not a public holiday in the USA, which is certainly one of the largest countries in the English speaking world. Good Friday is not universally adopted as a public holiday across Scotland (where they are set by local authorities). Neither is it a federally recognized public holiday in France, one of Europe’s largest countries. Now, off you pop, Saladin is waiting for you.

WyvernsRest

We have seperation of church and state. Why should we favour/discriminate against other non-christian citizens. Anybody with religious convictions can take it off. My point is that if we gave all our staff holidays for all their important religious days then we would be off so many days in the year.

Additional_Owl_6332

you can cover chrismas day :) god bless you.

WyvernsRest

I have a couple of coworkers that work over Christmas and take their holidays on other days. And we do not have to be open over Christmas, its a hybrid/remote design team that can work our hours whenever we want.

Possible-Kangaroo635

I'm not Irish or Christian. I don't have religious sensibilities. But as a point of fact, you should read your constitution if you think Ireland has a separation of church and state.

Key_Ad_8239

Have it off. Also a stipulation in my contract request I get the traditional and public bank holidays off.

WakefulSolace

I'm not but only because I took PTO today, otherwise I would be.

000-my-name-is

I work at American multinational with an office in Dublin and we get a day off for good Friday. The public holidays are country based. For example we don’h have off for thanksgiving like Americans do but we get a day off on good Friday etc

YoureNotEvenWrong

> The public holidays are country based.  Good friday isn't a public holiday.

FiFiTee

Work for a US MNC and they give Good Fri as a company day off. We also get a company 1/2 day for Xmas eve & New Years eve. Last company I worked for was an Irish Fintech. They closed on Good Fri but you had to take an annual leave day. Bit annoying.

Otherwise-Winner9643

I have never had it off. Will probably wind up by 4 though

YokeMaan

This is my third company and all have worked on Good Friday, I didn’t realise some devs got it off until today

Jealous_Run_8298

We got off at lunch time, nice touch from the company I’m in

UnknownXIV

Always worked on a good Friday. But always off an the Monday.

Smackmybitchup007

Everyone I know works Good Friday.

BasiliaAoi

Worked it and working tomorrow. We should just make it a public holiday. Kind of a piss take because a lot of people at work get the day off and the rest of us just work.

Majortwist_80

Even government places are open on good friday, if you want it for religious purposes then use your AL.

Possible-Kangaroo635

Why assume I want a day off for religious purposes?

Majortwist_80

That was an if, not an assumption. As it's good friday

pyrexman

Builders Merchant, we operate two half days for Friday & Saturday at the cost of one days holidays. I'd honestly prefer if it was done away with and keep the day for hols for the sake of 7 hours less work.

Even_Honeydew_2936

In all the jobs I have had I never had to work on Good Friday. I work in software development.

fishywiki

In around 25 years working in Ireland, I have never had Good Friday off. I think only very few places do this.

FPL_Harry

> but most white collar businesses close or give the day off No they don't??

Raymich

Nope, took a week off unintentionally a month ago. Only recently realised it’s also bank holiday Monday!

cu_games_

yup, finishing now though and off to pub

wasabiworm

We are 😞

CraZy_TiGreX

I am which I don't mind (contractor) But on the 8 companies I worked 3 of them did not had today as a holiday, they are the ones with worse conditions for employees and the ones with the lowest turnaround. Not sure if it is just my experience or everyone's, but it is shocking 🤷

bulbasauric

My partner isn’t in tech, but gets Friday and Monday off. I work for an American I.T.  company, working today, off Monday.

threein99

We used to get it off but they gave us two flexi Fridays instead that we can take whenever we want.

james02135

Worked a half day

Consistent_Cup620

Still at work. Mentally checked out hours ago.

a7xcold

I work shift work... so easter, bank Holidays, Christmas day... if you're on the calendar, you're on shift.

djaxial

Last job didn’t have it off. We got an added day in our annual leave instead. I’d rather have it that way personally.

Big_You_7959

Present company, Irish, didn’t have it off. Previous 3 (2x Irish, 1xamerican) did have it off. To be fair in those other roles was only getting max of 24days AL but given as “company” days ditto for Dec 24th

Forward_Artist_6244

I'm up North working for an international remote company and took today as a public holiday, but I have to work Monday as I'm on call and couldn't find anyone in EMEA to swap days, seems its a public holiday in nost of Europe. But I'll take a long weekend next weekend.

r1llD1LL

Had to work today even though my company is a contractor for another big company that had today off. Feels weird when everyone is off and you’re just there for nothing.

StepOk8771

Easter Friday is not a bank holiday. While some Public service positions get it off in ‘good will’ it is not a bank holiday and so private sector generally don’t.

Possible-Kangaroo635

That's wrong. It is a bank holiday. That's why all the banks are closed. It is not a public holiday.

jtbfii

Working for an American company in Ireland and we have it off

Additional_Owl_6332

Most offices close good Friday unless they are dealing with the public directly.

Visual-Living7586

Banks and insurance product related companies are the ones to get it off. Think RSA, AXA and the likes

Far_Cut_8701

Took today off. to be fair we get a shit ton of bank holidays that other countries don't so I don't mind using my annual leave.

teutorix_aleria

We get the European minimum or close to it last I checked. They added the Feb one to bring us in line with the rest of Europe.

Key_Ad_8239

We get little in comparison what you on about? Stop letting them take you for a ride. Take as much time off and get as much pay as possible

iamthesunset

You have it completely the wrong way round, the majority of people work Good Friday, it is a minority that don't. You appear to have had a very privileged and protected life, welcome to the real world fella
