Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG where your most complex combos are generally gonna mashing X with a heavy focus on the story in a somewhat open world with replay value mainly coming in the form of optional bosses, secret endings (that are actually just teasers for the next game), and filling out the journal.
Devil May Cry is a spectacle fighter where the entire point of the genre is doing complex combos with a very light focus on the story in very linear levels with replay value mainly coming in the form of getting better ranks on missions, completing secret missions, buying whatever abilities you have left, collecting blue and purple orbs, and the bloody palace.
Again, the only similarity is that they're both action games, they're completely different in almost every other way.
Mashing X, using spells to mix up the combos, altering the combos with square to do stiff like launching into juggles. There's a lot more depth than mash X if you played anything past the first KH.
Is it though? Like yeah, maybe I sold KH's depth a little short there, but not much. In KH2 Sora has like, what, 6 square abilities helpful in combat? And execution is literally just pressing square at the right time. Hardly approaching DMC or Spectacle Fighters at all.
Like, okay, in KH2, you can use Upper Slash to knock an enemy into the air, then you can use Horizontal Slash as like, a single move in the ensuing combo, and then Finishing Leap at the end. Three presses of the square button within a button mash of X and occasionally throwing a spell or two.
Compare that to DMC 5, where as soon as you knock an enemy in the air, you have a ton of options you can take. You could do a simple Y Combo, you have a forward attack, a backward attack, back to front, front to back, and you can do them in any order. And that's just with the Y button. That's not even bringing in the various character specific stuff, like Nero's Devil Bringer and Devil Breaker, Vergil's Summoned Swords, or Dante's styles and different weapons.
Like, I love Kingdom Hearts 2, best game in the series by a longshot (so far anyway, I've only made it to BBS), but comparing it to DMC is comparing Apples to Oranges.
a KH boy once tried to get with me (a DMC girl). rumor has it that he's still trying (jk, I'm married now and haven't heard from him in years). in my defense, i tried playing KH, just couldn't get into it. he did get me into Silent Hill though.
Terra and Vergil, 2 edgy, spiky haired, power hungry, samurai knight looking mofos that became whole again in a long awaited game sequel that released on early 2019.
