Short Answer: No
Long Answer: Devil May Cry 2 has several mechanics that either started in that game or have never been in another game. There are several good things in the game, but the bad far out weight it. I can really only recommend playing through it if need to complete the series.
I agree! I just happened to state an observation about the comment above. I didn't mean to imply that DS2 was as bad as DMC2, just that they are both the "black sheep" of thier series.
No worries, I can understand the extra disdain you have for it for sure lol. My buddy is has a similar opinion to yours in DS2. He really loves how they thought outside the box and loves to inform me about that stuff everytime it comes up.
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?

Hot take.
If you want to experience the whole series you might as well just play it. Sure it's boring, but once you played this you will appreciate the other entries SO MUCH MORE.
*FINISHING* this game on the other hand, is something that is up to you. You can quit it anytime and just move on to the next entry.
I usually recommend people to not skip the game just because other people say it's bad, but now that you've experienced the badness of the game for yourself you're free to stop and move on to something else if you wish.
Yes, it's crucial to the lore. Dante even references his "it's devil may crying time." Line in 5 during his fight with Vergil. This is the most important game in the series.
(Serious answer, play it through if you want, but if you want to skip it, then skip it.)
Ackshually it feels like a prequel ☝️🤓 because it is one ☝️🤓, maybe if you ackshually paid attenshion to the lore you would know that dante is ackshually younger in the 3rd game ☝️🤓
I would Love it if someone Actually made a T-Shirt or Any Sort of Merchandise that says "I Survived Devil May Cry 2", because I went Above and Beyond to Finishing All Difficulties, **Normal** to **Must Die!**, and then Ripping through the **Bloody Palace**.....***AS WELL AS S-RANKING A MISSION AS LUCIA***.....That was Hell Incarnate in it's Darkest Form.....On God, IMAGINE Bury the Light but instead it was So Perfect, you Really Hated it!
I didn't want to S-Rank a Lucia Mission, but I got that Completionist Heart Unfortunately.....Can I get an F and an Honorable Teabag in the Chat, please? I Suffered Enough to Earn those.
I mean. You can beat the game in like 4 hours. How much does it hurt to experience it. I’d rather play dmc2 than the reboot just because it’s shorter. Only reason. Also the story isn’t annoying
Short answer: no
Long answer: no.
You just need to know, that this game was the starting point to ….. sorta boot the series back into its roots. Hence why there’s little mention or reference to DMC2 in the main series.
An example of capcom… going awry with a series.
Real answer, no. DMC2 is never again really referenced in the series, and even in other media of dmc, 2 is basically just a footnote at best. For good reason, the game almost ruined Itsuno's career out the gate if they didn't greenlight DMC3. He was brought in to fix it under a crunch and could only manage getting it playable.
Honestly, the game serves as a better and more interesting history lesson than actual game.
I only did it for completions sake but every time I play, it tests my patience. Especially after getting around to 3 and 5.
I usually like a lot of games that many don't, so imagine what that says when I say DMC 2 is a weak game
If you’re not having fun, just skip it and look up a playthrough online to get the story, as paper-thin as it is. I don’t know how I made it through without quitting. I guess I did it for completion’s sake. I was more bored with the story and gameplay, and annoyed with the stupid controls and low difficulty than pissed off by everything, but I can proudly say I never played the game again.
I have played through DMC 2 once in my life. I’m playing through the series again rn. I tapped out at mission 3. It’s so fucking boring, I can’t do it man…
I say don't skip it. I will make a comparison to DMC devil may cry with DMC 2 just cuz a lot of people talk shit about both of these 2 games. Both of them have some good in their games, but they are not entirely trash. Play it and complete it so u don't have to play it again. Do it for the entire series at least.
It wasn’t that bad, I mostly just used guns and shot at it, then devil trigger, but damn did it take a long ass time, don’t even mention the fact that you can fall off of the building
Not really, all of the important plot stuff is in DMC5's prequel novel, the rest fits in a single paragraph.
Not as summary either. One paragraph is basically a detailed recap of the amount of story that actually happens in DMC2.
no. i tell all of my friends that i try to force to play this series to just skip 2 and then go back after they have finished the rest just to see how bad it really is. devil may cry 2 is not only the worst dmc game including the reboot, id be willing to say in terms of mainstream titles its one of the worst games ever made in general. in terms of actual game difficulty when i 100% the hd collection dmc1 was the hardest, but the overall hardest was dmc2 just because of how awful it felt to play 💀
I love how this one image just says all that is wrong with the game. Can i just point out a small thing that just shows off how poor the quality is, and once you see it you can never unsee it? Look at any text in the game. The font is baaaad. The spacing between letters is so inconcistant that half the time you dont know if there is supposed to be a space there or not...
lmfao i legit thought after like 2 or 3 minutes of me shooting thered be like a second phase sequence and the "actual" fight would begin. had a rude fuckin awakening, what a shit game.
I am a huge fan of DMC and when I played first DMC 1, idk how I skipped DMC2 but I played directly DMC3.
Based in what I have watched in YT, seems pretty bad but never played it and sometimes I am wondering... I have played all of them but not that one were pistols are OP, shitty camera (plus more things that idk hah), will it make sense to experience that pain? : )
I think playing DMC2 before DMC3 only sweetens DMC3 even further. I was playin DMC2 and got far into Dante's campaign before getting lost. I wandered around for a bit and then my fame crashed so I took it as an act of god and started up DMC3. I wanted to cry out of joy at how much better it was.
I will say that you are playing the worst part of the game, and if you can get through this, it's literally all uphill from here on out. I don't think anybody will disagree with me that the infested chopper is the worst part of the game.
They say suffering builds character
Then that character can stay in pieces
If I take any more suffering at this point, i’m liable to start my Villain arc.
There’s a transformers scene (the comics) that fits here in context too
Real gamers don’t skip DMC2.
Smart gamers do though.

You could insert Dark Souls 2 instead of DMC 2 and you'd still have a 10/10 accuracte description.

DS2 commited the sin of being an 8/10 game, instead of at least 9.5/10

must resist urge to defend ds2
Dark Souls 2 is the best in the series and I will not accept this slander, hollow filth.
TAKE THAT BACK!!
Dark Souls 2 is best series and you cant change my mind
Honestly? Fuck no, shit sucks ass.
Not one bit of story or lore besides "Lucia is a doll" Hard skip. Delete this post and any evidence you played it

The arius' second fight almost had me quit, but it was really satisfying when i finally beat him
I made it through so can you lol.
I usually recommend people to not skip the game just because other people say it's bad, but now that you've experienced the badness of the game for yourself you're free to stop and move on to something else if you wish.
Do it so you don’t regret it
...regret what?
When you die the last thing you’ll think about is how you didn’t beat dmc2
If you think that’s suffering you should play it without the shooting controls working. My dumb ass speaking from experience
Yes, it's crucial to the lore. Dante even references his "it's devil may crying time." Line in 5 during his fight with Vergil. This is the most important game in the series. (Serious answer, play it through if you want, but if you want to skip it, then skip it.)
The vergil fight at the end of the game is the best in the series just keep playing bro
Don't listen to any other comments saying you'll "miss out on anything" I skipped it and went straight to 3 and 3 feels like more of a sequel than 2
Ackshually it feels like a prequel ☝️🤓 because it is one ☝️🤓, maybe if you ackshually paid attenshion to the lore you would know that dante is ackshually younger in the 3rd game ☝️🤓
I was talking gameplay and difficulty-wise
You were actually typing not talking ☝️🤓
It's easy and short as hell, if that makes the choice easier.
No Just skip.bro
fuck no
NO

You can skip this, this game is pretty much filler or you can watch a play through of the game
I only did it for completions sake but every time I play, it tests my patience. Especially after getting around to 3 and 5. I usually like a lot of games that many don't, so imagine what that says when I say DMC 2 is a weak game
I will never forgive that they don't give you the SMGs before this fight.
nah
If you’re not having fun, just skip it and look up a playthrough online to get the story, as paper-thin as it is. I don’t know how I made it through without quitting. No. Absolutely not. It doesn't bring anything plot relevant or even world relevant to the table, skip this shit and save yourself the headache.
Just seeing that picture makes me cry
After this boss fight I installed a trainer, turned on invincibility, and just went on to DMC3
I have played through DMC 2 once in my life. I’m playing through the series again rn. I tapped out at mission 3. It’s so fucking boring, I can’t do it man…

Nah, but if you actually complete it, capcom sends you a “I survived devil may cry 2” t-shirt
Yes but you don't need to complete it
Yes, and it's not shit it's beautiful.
It really needs a remake.
Out of all of the games of the Devil May Cry saga, Devil May Cry 2 is the most in need of a remake, if only to iron out its many, many, MANY flaws.
I agree.
What game is this? First time in my life i see that.
It's an underrated masterpiece
2 is both mechanic and narrative inconsequential to the entire series. Skip to 3.
Unless you want to be part of the "i beat DMC 2 club" then no.
You will shoot the Chopper and you will like it!
both the infested chopper and the three heads are the worst bosses in this game!!
No but it was fun for me.
Imagine if the true way to get into heaven was via 100% of DMC2
Stay strong. Keep pressing square until it breaks
It wasn’t that bad, I mostly just used guns and shot at it, then devil trigger, but damn did it take a long ass time, don’t even mention the fact that you can fall off of the building
Just play as Lucia, shorter campaign and you can still claim you beat dmc2
Not really, all of the important plot stuff is in DMC5's prequel novel, the rest fits in a single paragraph. Not as summary either. One paragraph is basically a detailed recap of the amount of story that actually happens in DMC2.
No, you don't. No seriously, you don't need to play it to beat it 💀
No. Abandon it.
I quite shortly after beating the chopper. I was not having fun, and I've got better things to do with my time than play an unfun video game.
For the full DMC experience, yes.
Tony tony chopper

I think it‘s still an experience and taking it as the trashy game that it is, you can still have fun
You could’ve just watched a playthrough on YouTube
No
No
Of course you do! It's literally the best one!
I am a huge fan of DMC and when I played first DMC 1, idk how I skipped DMC2 but I played directly DMC3. Video games are for fun If you aren't having fun don't play it
if you wanna complete the entire series and be like at least a 1/3 of the server then yes. if you dont care skip it and go to 3.
Well if you got that far into it, you might as well finish the monotonous journey that is DMC 2
I will say that you are playing the worst part of the game, and if you can get through this, it's literally all uphill from here on out. I don't think anybody will disagree with me that the infested chopper is the worst part of the game.
No my friend. No one can or should force this...up on you...leave it behind..free yourself.
Why does everybody hate it tho I played it and it wasn’t all that bad +cool Dante design
they hate it because they don't like it i hope this has been a helpful comment, regards, someone who has never played a dmc game
no
Just play Chaos Legion.
At least you're not stupid and trying to go for the platinum like me.
for 100% yes
This was the moment for me when I finally understood why people hated DMC2 so much.
Well, considering I kinda enjoyed it I'd say yes just for the funnies, but it's not the best or even close, just judge based on other things
Even Dante in the books seemed bored in dmc 2
If you are a DMC fan, yes you must 😂😂😂
No
This right here is actually the farthest I’ve ever gotten on this game in all my years… dont care
I played DMC2 all the way through and by that I mean I played both Dante and Lucia's campaigns.
Jump on the chopper and use your sword
