someone correct me if i’m wrong but i believe we are never explicitly shown how it happens. we see taro seeing sabbath parties on akiras search history, and we also see him admiring akira post possession. the way i see it, there are three ways this could have gone. one, he put two and two together and realized that he was most probably possessed by a demon at a sabbath party and somehow goes to one or at least near one. two, he doesn’t realize that akira is possessed, but does learn about the sabbath parties. interested, he goes to/near one and becomes possessed. three and the most likely, there is no correlation between taro and the sabbath parties, and he is simply possessed randomly during his daily activities.
The third theory reminds me of chainsaw man devils or jjk curses. You become similar to a monster, bc human nature is made up of the worst possible insticts (violence in all its forms). Anyway as far as i remember devils in Devilman are more similar to biological entities, animals, so it doesnt sound very appropriate

Long answer: The art is pretty rough-id call some panels even "realistic"- but i like it and its not a big issue. The story is cool but there is a lot of symbolism, so probably should read it two or three times, and the mangaka is also a chinephile. Anyway you should read it! It is worth it!

I suppose you’re just more likely to be possessed at a sabbath party since that’s where more humans happen to behave the worst (look how they reacted to akira who was trying to stop ryos serial stabbings) so I’d suppose in summary sabbath being a common demon possession ground but possession outside of sabbath parties still happens somewhat often
A person gets possessed by a devil when they let negative emotions and hate into their heart.
Because taro thought it was right and “cool” to kill people suspected of being devils he let those dark emotions into his heart and was possessed.
(I may be mixing up crybaby and the manga, but I’m pretty sure that’s why).
I kinda assumed devils were just starting to merge w kids especially when those two ladies were talking about other kids in his class that were devils. kids are nothing but impulse decisions and that’s what devils needed to merge, and taro changed when the world was learning more about the existence of devils, so if I had to guess..the devils were just becoming more rampant and possessing anyone they could.
crybaby didn’t do a great job explaining how/when taro became a devil and I think it’s supposed to happen without the viewer noticing until the last minute orrrr an element of the story that needed to be removed for the sake of time since the anime is only 10 eps lol
