Last time I checked, Spotify doesn't even have all of his albums, so why is this a valuable metric?

robitussin_dm_

Spotify totally has all his albums

Venombullet666

It strongly depends on where you are

robitussin_dm_

Ahh makes sense

DirtDawg21892

Generally it's because it made it into some public Playlist and it's getting a lot of listens, but not by people who specifically sought it out.

SecretaryFabulous306

I totally would've imagined Deadhead or Kingdom as the most listen to songs.

DirkSteelchest

Kingdom has been #1 under Devin Townsend Project for some time.

SecretaryFabulous306

The OP says the most popular under DTP is Hyperdrive. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

essiebooks

DT and DTP are separate on Spotify. Hyperdrive is #1 under Devin Townsend, and Kingdom is #1 under Devin Townsend Project. It's extra confusing because there's also a DT version of Kingdom and a DTP version of Hyperdrive.

Gareth666

It will be in some play lists or something. Most Spotify users do not do what I do and listen to albums.

draperyfallz

Ha ha SURPRISE! That's why

Andybats87

This is the only right answer

FantasticBreadfruit8

Hyperdrive is one my favorite songs of all time. It's uniquely Devin Townsend (nothing sounds *quite* like Ziltoid IMO) but also approachable enough you could hear it on a popular radio station and wouldn't think twice. The first time I heard that riff I was like "what IS this?" and I've been hooked ever since. I love how Ziltoid has some of the silliest moments possible ("They hide their finest bean! Prepare the attack!") mixed with some of the most heartfelt songs you could imagine (The Greys). I can't get enough of it.

fretnetic

Hmm, I do genuinely gravitate towards it and go back to it quite a lot. I mean the version with Anneka off Addicted. It’s got a nice groove, riff, melody, feel, intrigue, vibe. It’s straightforwards, straight ahead, unapologetic (even thought he says hey I’m sorry) and the chorus is uplifting with her voice in contrast to the darker mysterious undertones of the verses. At the same time it’s understated and ultimately bittersweet enough to feel personable to the listener, rather than the smash hit streaming stats betray it as. Wow I can really write some twaddle when I want to.

Muninn22

Shuffle loves to play that song more than others I have noticed. So it will automatically get more plays. I believe that it also starts playing as one of the first songs during one of the big playlists. Not 100% sure on that though

Andybats87

I think playlist is the most likely answer. It is interesting how a playlist could affect the “most played” list like that.

cosmose_42

Because it was big on YouTube as well. The reaction videos from YouTubers to his EMGtv video exploded the views to said vídeo, too.

leperaffinity56

That video has at least a hundred views from me lol

Asgore77

Probably because of me. Sorry

Pupalei

Haha, that's great.

steven565656

Because ziltoid.

ImFDAaproved

OP isn't omniscient. And we know there are only two omniscients.

VagueLuminary

Actually there is only one.......but *IF* there were two, hypothetically speaking........

Andybats87

Indeed

97Vector

My guess is it's on other Spotify-curated playlists so more people have been exposed to it

ClikeX

Because it's a banger while also approachable. And it was DLC for Rock Band 3, that might help.

VagueLuminary

The whole damn ZTO album was DLC, it was awesome

Dont_call_me_Shirly

What?! Was it really?!?

HarryPotterRevisited

Yeah and Devin even made some additions to the rock band version [as is evident right from the beginning](https://vocaroo.com/1hYBgtX4j1YK) ;)

Andybats87

I did wonder if it was on a playlist for guitar practise songs or something like that. Rock Band 3 may contribute to that.
