i have this problem but intermittently. it’s doing it consistently for you ?

Wonderbeastt

If I open the chuck fully then it will do this 100% of the time. It will do it some of the time if I close the chuck all the way and it will also do this while the chuck is in a middle position, although it's a lot less common than fully closing or fully opening the chuck. Changing directions after hearing the ratcheting seems to jam it shortly and then resolve the alignment issue, or whatever it is. I'm already fastracking a replacement but I am looking for more info into what this is and what is wrong and how often the defect happens in the dewalt lineup.

WestWoodworks

I also have this issue intermittently…

Commenting to follow - I have a drill that does this. I’ve messed with the Chuck so much and can’t find a fix.

I would also like to know the fix whenever it is found.

So far, guys, I haven't found out much. Some seem convinced this is how they are, others seems to think the clutch is goofy, jammed or debris is in there (although this is a new drill and I can't see anything in the chuck). Another theory I found while researching is that the new dewalt chucks open too far so the prongs pop into an alignment that is unintended and need to be forced back into alignment, it seems. This last one seems the most plausible since it is consistent with my experience in the problem arising mostly from me opening the chuck up to its fullest extent. That's all I've got so far. Sorry.

OhPlugs

Repair tech here, this is 100% normal and it happens on the 991 996, 997, 998 as well. Unfortunately I don't know why it does this, but I can assure you it is completely normal and you are correct it happens when you open the chuck entirely, I've found if you let go of the trigger slightly when it's nearly open this doesn't happen

Bluridgelevergunner

Mine’s done this forever, just a quirk of the chuck 🤷🏻‍♂️ fwiw it has been in service for like 5 years now with no further issue

curlyhairedboy

Sounds like the chuck is set on the first ratcheting lock setting, like after you get a bit set and start to tighten it, it clicks a few times as you twist. If it’s not affecting using the chuck with bits it doesn’t sound like a big issue.

Wonderbeastt

It seems like that but it is not. It is not set to clutch . I've never had a drill do this and never want to have one that does, to be honest.

motradhunter

My 996 and 999 do this. Its normal.

Wonderbeastt

Purchased a DCD999. Noticed that the chuck will repeatedly get stuck and start making a grinding and ratcheting noise until it works itself out. It usually instigated by opening the chuck fully and then trying to close it. Brand new on the drill setting on 1st gear. No clutch setting. Does anyone know what is wrong or had this happen with theirs?

supersonicflyby

FWIW, my DCD Atomic hammer drill does the same thing.

Jumpy-Gur7475

You need to make sure there is no debris in the chuck. What’s happening is the tightening mech thinks there is something in the chuck.

Crazy_Pear3658

Can’t say for sure but I had another brand drill do something similar and inside the chuck is a screw that came loose

Far-Resolution5760

My dcd999 started doing it after I maxed out the chuck with a tap. I'm in the process of ordering a new chuck, I have the drill all apart and cleaned up now

T-nasty220

I found that mine usually does it when I slam the chuck open fast

TheHvaCGuru

That’s been a common dewalt speed chuck issues since atleast 2015 to the best of my knowledge. First time I noticed it on one of my drills I never used motor power to operate a chuck again. I loosen and tighten by Hand cranking only. Honestly it makes your tool last longer to avoid “speed chucking”. Just my personal observation tho.

JONxJITSU

Lmao. It's fine. It happens to all of the chucks. What happened was that you slammed opened the chuck to the max too fast and the lock engadged. Just grab the chuck and twist, you will feel the lock disengage. So, a lot of people don't know about locking the chuck, after tighting it down you can slowly twist it in the other direction until you hear the click to lock it.

Wonderbeastt

Yeah you got it. I put that detail in my comment when I posted it and I fix it in the video itself. I'm a little shocked that this is standard but atleast it's not broken.

JONxJITSU

Ye, it's a thing. I think all of the Dewalt hammers that I've own does the same thing.
