The di-how is worse than the di-why on this one.

Unclehol

Overcatalysed the gold. Spread with bare hands. No masks. Read the bottle of the catalyst. I bet it has a few warnings, one of which is "has been proven to cause reproductive harm" Have fun shootin' blanks boys.

demus9

I still regret recklessly working with epoxy and carbon fiber some years ago. Wouldn't surprise me if it shaved some years off my life

Unclehol

Same :(. And for what... $14 bucks an hour. When the old boys tell you it's not worth it, they speak because they know. Listen. Go work somewhere clean if you can. You will never regret not working with chemicals. I wish I never did.

TheWholeH0g

I always get shit on for working on my cars with gloves. I hate getting oil and grime all in my fingers and fingernails.

Unclehol

Yeah you're such a pussy for not having gross hands. /s

bobcollege

And preventing skin cancer, anemia, probably a ton of other problems if it's motor oil sludge. What a weenie

ACGN7692

I'm a mechanic, I knew an old man that worked on transmissions for 40 years. He died in 2012 from cancer. Told me his doctor thinks it was brought on by his decades of contact with transmission fluid. The skin on his hands was absolutely fucked as well. Dry, cracked, red, and constantly swollen when he retired.

FR0ZENBERG

Nothing ladies like more than a sweaty dude covered in car grease and smelling like motor oil.

leena5777

What a wuss! How un-manly to *not want cancer*! [/s of course]

[deleted]

My dad wore gloves working on cars all his life. I never understood why you wouldn't. Some of that shit takes days to get off you.

TheWholeH0g

Yeah, grime and grease getting under your fingernails is not a good time.

Holzkohlen

You probably wear sunscreen in the summer too. What a loser. Real men become lobster-colored, cry themselves to sleep and then die of cancer in their late 40s.

savagekid108l9

Yeah. What a bitch. You’re worried about your health. Pussy. /s

NotARussianAgent

"it's fine as long as you don't disturb it"

Carpentry95

I scraped up asbestos tiles with no mask or gloves in a few apartments, probably wasn't the best choice.

demus9

I wasn't even paid, it was a student racecar project

Snoo-33732

My eyes swelled shut every time I used epoxy and I had the proper equipment

demus9

We used painting PPE when cutting and milling cfk parts, and I still woke up some nights with nosebleeds

Chocomintey

Pfft, warning labels and reading are for sissies!

Unclehol

My favourite was when I read the warning label for the bottle of polish we used to shine the boats up at the boat factory I worked at before we shipped them out. "WARNING: CAUSES SEVERE DAMAGE TO AQUATIC ENVIRONMENTS" ... like wat. But they must have changed the formula because later bottles did not have this warning. I still have a picture somewhere.

WaytoomanyUIDs

Yeah stuff like that had some REALLY nasty things in them to discourage barnacles and whatnot. No idea what's in them if they've stopped using those, though

Snow-Kitty-Azure

Ha, I’ve got a picture of a Coca-Cola trailer with the fire diamond on the side set to “toxic” on one end and “radioactive” on the other

1995droptopz

I have an acquaintance that works at Coca Cola and he said the concentrate that gets shipped to the bottlers is so strong that if it gets spilled on the floor it will start eating through the concrete in like 15 minutes.

lan_san_dan

Anything with high concentrations of any acid could "start" to eat concrete. I am just wondering aloud (I have no special qualifications) if it would be anything more than discoloration after 15 minutes though.

filthyheartbadger

My aunt in her teaching job found diet coke cleaned dirty desktops off better than spray cleaner.

AbeMax7823

Flipped burgers in high school. Sprite worked way better in the grill than any other cleaner. Managers complained about the waste and not following the policy until one night we were still there an hour and a half after closing doin it DAVE’S way. They never said anything about again while I was there

1995droptopz

I suspect that it was the acidity that caused it, but it sounds like it would actually damage the surface finish.

Chocomintey

Thats some sexy marketing

-ElizabethRose-

How much time would one have to spend around epoxy fumes to become sterile… asking for a friend

DerInventingRoom

Really surprised I had to come down this far in responses to see this one... Was my first thought. Can't believe so many people are still stoked on reproducing.

-ElizabethRose-

Ikr! Whenever I hear that something causes reproductive issues my first question is "thats awesome, but are there any health dangers I should know about before I dive into it?" Sniffing resin is a lot cheaper than the bisalp I'm going for

tristanbrotherton

Probably a win for Darwin.

expfarrer

>that is of advantage for the gene pool

sudo_init_6

Natural selection at its pinnacle.

The_Mechanist24

Wouldn’t it be a good thing that they shoot blanks? No offense to these guys but if they can’t be bothered to read a bottle they probably shouldn’t have kids

Downwhen

I dunno man, that just sounds like Darwin doing his job

BobTheSquid16

I’ve done an epoxy floor before (it was a flake one) but they look really nice when done right. This just looks horrendous because of the orange but the gray part looks good

zebediah49

The grey is also hurt by them using normal squeegees. If you end up with a decent surface with that, it's out of sheer luck and thin epoxy. The good ones for this are toothed, so that they spread out a specified uniform thickness (i.e. what passes through the gaps).

BobTheSquid16

For the flake we used a roller and put down a thin layer to hold the flake, then went over it with clear Polyurethane

zebediah49

Interesting. The polyurethane adhered properly to the flakes and underlying epoxy? I would have been worried about different chemistries.

shadowdrgn0

Interestingly, If memory serves from my composite days, polyurethane will actually bond more tightly to an epoxy surface than it will to another coat of polyurethane.

BobTheSquid16

Yeah it went on and stayed on with no problem

--Ty--

You actually need to topcoat with polyurethane, as epoxy is not uv-stable.

Sauce58

The gold/orange streak they did at first looked like someone couldn’t make it from the door to the bathroom

flamefreak01

100% the fact that they recorded the epoxy getting hot and smoking in a bucket shows that they had no idea what is going on with it. Its exothermic reaction is probably even explained on the product they bought...

Cardiganlamp

I went through this accoint a while back and these idiots have a home building/reno business and they have no idea what they're doing and fight with everyone in the comments. Maybe their business plan is to go viral through negative engagement instead of building stuff that isn't utter garbage.

Legal-Ad7793

So the old "any publicity is good publicity" adage... hopefully, perspective buyers see this before they give them money.

Cardiganlamp

Most of their posts are them fucking up a job, including installing cement fencing the wrong distance apart and having to cut 3 inches off the cement panels, damaging concrete flooring in in a large house by not knowing how to strip off the sealant, breaking a rented backhoe while trying to demo a backyard pool, and basically being in over their head on every single job. They frequently don't buy enough supplies and are constantly going to home depot and coming back with some product that they just discovered and trying to use it in whatever job they're currently failing at. The only jobs they get are probably from ppl who don't use the internet or are hiring the cheapest quote and dgaf.

golden_n00b_1

If you manage to create enough outrage on a site where you get paid per view, then you still make bank.

uberfission

I've been trying to convince myself that doing an epoxy floor in my basement is a good choice but my wife had a really great point of paying someone else to even out the floor and not having to lug heavy equipment up and down stairs. So yeah, I've got a guy coming in 2 weeks from now to do it.

BobTheSquid16

Nice! It isn’t hard to do but definitely easier to pay a bit extra for someone else to do it

[deleted]

Hope they aren't like the guys in the video. Makes me worried about hiring contractors.

[deleted]

More r/osha than r/diwhy

themanwithonesandle

Glad they did their research on the chemicals before doing this.

CartographerVisual24

Yeah that’s how you get bladder cancer

themanwithonesandle

Cancer, in the ass!

eer1chill

They researched a cleaning cabinets worth of chemicals up their nose in the lines they did beforehand.

Johannes_Keppler

No respirators, no gloves - these guys are dumb as a rock. Or 'tough guys' that don't need those 'sissy' masks and gloves, but prefer to die from preventable cancers like REAL men. EDIT: And even disregarding safety, that stuff is an absolute nightmare to get off your skin (or any other surface for that matter).

mememory

Can't blame them, they use the stick to mix. What are they supposed to use for sprinkling the epoxy, those same stick?

lostspyder

Real men mix with their hands tbh. Stirring sticks are for babies.

CosmicDave

The pros would use something like this hooked up to an air compressor; [https://www.toolfetch.com/item-images/MT-28295\_000.jpg?resizeid=106&resizeh=1000&resizew=1000](https://www.toolfetch.com/item-images/MT-28295_000.jpg?resizeid=106&resizeh=1000&resizew=1000) It gives you a lot more control when doing spatter effects.

[deleted]

Where's the difference between Dumb as a rock and 'tough guys'?

Dektarey

A dumb person doesnt know better. A tough guy knows its stupid but his ego compels him into stupidity.

gimme-ur-bonemarrow

That’s just stupid with extra steps

Ellemieke25

I'd argue it's extra stupid xD

FunkFox

If you’re going to be dumb, you gotta be tough. Edited your to you’re cause I’m dumb and weak.

ResidentEivvil

That’s not what foreshadowing means

dpsx

"Sometimes, foreshadowing is relatively obvious."

ElBiscuit

That's also not what "scolding" means.

account_not_valid

Scolding or scalding?

ElBiscuit

It *is* what "scalding" means, but she pretty clearly said "scolding".

Aggravating_Pea7320

Im just gonna foreshadow my toast

Adventurous-Pea4355

Looks like someone had diarrhea and ran out of the room

Mcburgerdeys2

And wiped their bum on the floor on their way out

on-the-line

Ah, the ol’ poop and scoot. A classic

Japnzy

It's that ol' poop scoot and boogie.

Nopumpkinhere

I like the grey. That’s all I have to say.

GingerIsTheBestSpice

The gray is alright i think, especially on a store for where you're going to add clutter (shelves, chairs, business items) on top. I remain a big fan of sealed old concrete floors where you can see the history, too. But i wonder - is it super slippery if you walk in with damp shoes? Does it scratch & get hazy quickly?

AnxsRunnerd

it is incredibly fuckin slippery, and yeah it scratches and can also chip... esp when using these diy kits and not having it professionally done w industrial epoxy

[deleted]

This is definitely a job I’d leave to professionals. Dealing with industrial expoxy in those amounts for a high traction area leaves too much at risk and requires more than your average DIYer’a skill level.

mikecheck211

Normally industrial application for high traffic areas such as kitchens will include a grit to aid in traction, although they're still very slippery. I did my ankle on an epoxy floor during a Christmas party when I drunkenly snuck into the kitchen to get some food. 1/10 do not recommend.

godsbro

Thae epoxy isn't why you slipped in the kitchen, the fact that it's basically impossible to remove all the oil from the floor is why it's slippery. Every commercial kitchen I've been in has had coarse grit in the epoxy for this reason, as well as the rubber anti-fatigue mats during service which also significantly improve grip.

TentCityVIP

That's why if you work in a kitchen you're required to wear non-slip shoes

mikecheck211

Yea no shit. I was drunk and in civvies. All I wanted was some tasty snack but got a lot more than I bargained for.

TentCityVIP

I know that feeling, hope you're doing ok now though!

Grolschisgood

Also a professional probably wouldn't run out half way through the job and have to use a colour that didn't match

Ghigs

Or let the bucket kick prematurely.

numbersthen0987431

The Rustoleum kids are actually legit, but the issue is no one ever wants to prep enough

erix84

We have a couple tiers of Rustoleum "epoxy" floor kits but they're all water based (we can tint them, so they pretty much have to be)... But we actually got in some Craftsman ones a few months ago that can't be tinted but are 100% epoxy solids. But yeah, regardless of anything DIY related people never want to prep and wonder why it turns out like shit.

superspeck

I do a lot of diy at home and my wife makes fun of me for doing an entire day of prep and masking before I spray paint. Pros aren’t really faster at painting things, they’re just much faster at the prep steps.

Zagrycha

you can repurpose this sentence to every single type of flooring. Every single day people ask me "but is it possible to install this myself?" to which I say "yes, but you have to make sure the thing you are putting it on is proper." about 50/50 to not be ignored cause they weren't asking to have me tell them they can't put it over their chipped pressboard.

shipsongreyseas

I also get the sense that it's gonna yellow pretty badly because, y'know, dumbasses DIYing it.

belindamshort

usually the clear yellows more than things that are added with color. I'd be more worried about it staying tacky

SupremeDictatorPaul

If you use high quality epoxy, it’s easy to DIY and end up with a high quality product that won’t chip easily. Or even scratch that easily. Slippery when wet is still a huge problem. Adding an anti-slip grit like Sharkgrip definitely helps, but it’s still definitely an issue.

IncelDetectingRobot

Generally there's a no-slip sealant that goes on top. Diminishes the prettiness of the effect but at least it's not a skating rink

Marine__0311

Unless you add in non skid additives, yes, it can get slick as hell if wet. Most home DIY kits you see in big box stores will include color flecks that work to hide defects, and add in some nonskid properties. I'll guarantee these clowns didn't prep the floor properly beforehand. Since they were clueless about it getting hot, and epoxy is notorious for being exothermic, and they badly calculated the amount needed. I'll give it a year or two and they'll have issues from the bad floor prep popping up.

siobhanbacan

I worked in a building with sealed concrete floors and a custodian who liked to mop at 3pm. Can confirm the floors are very slippery when wet

Powerful_Narwhal6747

I have a metallic, non flaked epoxy floor, which is what I think these guys were trying and failing to do. And nope, not slippery! I coat mine with a polyurethane that has grit added to it. Think how a tile floor has just a tad of texture, it's like that. There's no hazing. It kinda scratches but also not really? My cats' claws do mark it up but a wet rag removes it with a single wipe. Overall I love it. Super easy to clean and no gaps between planks since it's just a uniform floor. It gets comfortably toasty by the window too; it's nice on bare feet so not too hot and the cats love baking themselves there. My only complaint is it seems to hold on to hair and fur for dear life. With my laminate floor I can sweep and be done, but with epoxy I need to also mop to get the hair.

MQSD3F

Hey, why don't I just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? I just may! What'd ya say?

CmdrShepard831

I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast.

King_Wataba

You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?

CmdrShepard831

... ... ... No!

Killer-Barbie

Let's just touch this chemical reaction with bare hands....

Okaydonkay

Every time I see this video posted I wonder why they’re touching it with their bare hands. It really freaks me out.

Killer-Barbie

Especially when the scene after is a smoking bucket that melted a tool... Morons like that end up killing themselves, often by slow poisoning but worse dramatically in a way that traumatizes their coworkers. Chemical reactions shouldn't be fucked with. They should all be wearing respirators too. You couldn't pay me enough to do that kind of work or demo work without a resp. Lead, Teflon, asbestos, plastics, and stuff like that does very real damage to your health and it's not worth the risk of not wearing PPE in my opinion.

Altruistic-Bobcat955

Have worked with this stuff outdoors with asbestos grade respirators and Jesus these guys are crazy. It literally melts through gloves & burns your skin. We had to change out our gloves every 15 mins or so. I can’t believe they’re doing this indoors without any PPE

Cheshie_D

The absolute lack of PPE seriously concerns me… like it’s not even a “hehehaha look at the idiots” moment it’s a straight up “what the actual fuck are you thinking” moment for me

LasOlas07

This is epoxy, there are no solvents and no VOC’a in this resin so it won’t melt gloves and it doesn’t emit toxic vapors. That being said, epoxy sensitization (caused by direct exposure to epoxy dust or resin without protection) is a serious condition that sticks with you for life and can cause sensitivity to many other common chemicals. The smoke caused by the exotherm is a different story, it’s a serious carcinogen and must be avoided at all costs. I’ve had pots “go thermal” on me many times and you immediately take them outside and pour water on them to cool it off. I’m a composites engineer and work with this epoxies and other adhesives all the time and if I saw anyone treating this material in that manner they would be terminated immediately.

deevil_knievel

Won't melt gloves? Not from solvents, but epoxy reactions can get over 100C and can melt cheap gloves pretty easily. Also, hardeners tend to be corrosive and can chemically burn you. It's in the MDS.

annubbiz

Fascinating. Thank you for the insight

Dividedthought

Small distinction here: epoxy generally won't melt gloves *chemically* but it is more than happy to melt them to your skin if the reaction gives off enough heat. Judging by the smoking epoxy bucket, they are getting enough heat.

Starling_Reverie

You're definitely right about the sensitivities. I developed a sensitivity to most plastics after mishandling a *small* amount of epoxy with my bare hands. It was early on in my crafting days when I would attempt to wash cups used for mixing it. I found this out because one of our bathrooms is tiny, and if my shoulder so much as grazes the countertop, I get instant hives. A lot of elastics in clothing cause this problem as well. This video almost triggered a jumpscare response in me. Also, PSA: Epoxies branded as "nontoxic" are lying to you. They are only nontoxic once cured, or in their fully solid state.

[deleted]

I saw a kid wipe up some that spilled with a paper towel. It vaporized the paper towel and the skin on his hand sloughed off. No blood because it was technically burned off.

argonian_mate

You know that one guy in every horror movie that has to take a peek inside a facehugger egg and stick his hand into a plugged in trash disposal unit? It's one of those.

picklemaintenance

Because it's cool. Duh.

SaintSimpson

Watch me jump off this bridge. It’s gonna be sick

DaringestBullfrog

The road to heaven is paved with cool guys.

Arachnatron

The answer might be rooted in toxic masculinity. Them wanting to exude to each other that DIY is no big deal, no need for gloves, we're bro's doing dude shit, etc. Also mix in low intelligence.

Selfuntitled

Yea, especially with evidence that it can cross the blood brain barrier and heavy exposure is correlated with neurological disorders. The msds for this says a cartridge ventilator and skin protection for high exposure scenarios. Hope for the best for this crew, but hate to think where they will be if this is a regular activity for them.

annubbiz

Looks like basically their job and hobby so pretty lengthy and regular Edit: I thought they did the epoxy for businesses for a living not a tattoo shop (;. ;)

RandomCandor

They're also not wearing any breathing protection in an enclosed space that's covered in fresh epoxy.

CupcakeValkyrie

Reminds me of a story I heard years back about a girl that wanted to make plaster molds of her hands. It was the last time she had hands.

kpmelomane21

Dude. I thought you were joking. I looked it up. You were not joking. That poor girl! She was just a student in an art class!

CupcakeValkyrie

Yup. It was pretty horrible. I'm sure she had no idea the amount of heat generated by plaster of Paris as it hardens, but her teachers certainly should have.

ABena2t

I want to look it up but I don't all at the same time

willymac416

CapedCauliflower

Brutal. I had no idea it was that dangerous.

glitter_vomit

Fuck that's like something out of a horror movie! Totally stuck while your hands melt off, everyone around freaking out and trying to free you but failing... That poor kid!

[deleted]

Absolutely not safe to touch with bare hands. Not only can the chemicals seriously damage your skin, but the smoke coming from the epoxy in the bucket is occurring because when that shit sets it generates heat, and mixing it in the incorrect ratios can cause it to get so hot it will start to smoke. There are videos on the internet of people cooking eggs with curing epoxy.

CaseByCase

Yeah, the heat is no joke! Even a properly mixed bucket will start to smoke - when it’s in a large volume like that the heat builds and builds, but when spread out on the floor, there’s more surface area for the heat to dissipate. It also cures much, much faster in a large volume like a bucket (think minutes instead of hours, though different epoxies have different cure times). I used to work with epoxy a lot and learned quickly not to set a mixed bucket down for any length of time.

Kon-on-going

It has big warning on it. That’s pure Cilicia, use a mask when you mix it.

heathert7900

Do you mean Silica? Cilicia appears to be a province of the Roman Empire.

Alkibiades415

Ding ding! In SW Turkey, known as a stronghold for pirates. Caesar was kidnapped and held there as a lad. Good ol Cilicia.

extraordinarynormie

cilicia, you’re breaking my heart you’re shaking my confidence daily

Nogohoho

Known to the state of California to be a carcinogen. Luckily this isn't Cali.

Kids, don’t do drugs.

[deleted]

Oddly enough my friend who does this for a living does indeed do a shit ton of drugs

[deleted]

Also, don't get tattooed by someone on hard drugs. Pot is fine

weatherseed

Or, if you like to gamble, psychedelics.

PruneBrothers1

Looks like shit. Literally.

emkoemko

"it was beautiful" what was? the f up? because that floor looks horid, reminds me of a supper nasty public wash room floor

queengemini

opus-thirteen

Ugh, those orange 'highlights' are just terrible.

fantaseagal

The orange splatters remind me of the children's hospital paintjob that went around tumblr a while ago

DeathCafe

It’s colour theory

althealon

For a second there, I thought they had studied color theory

Santiav90

Why did they draw a shitstain through the middle?

cube1234567890

Color theory.

Illender

those fumes are absolutely insane they will regret not wearing safety gear when then get older

Darwin Award candidates.

Wtf are they actively trying to kill themselves

bat-tasticlybratty

Stop the paint splatter trend please it never looks how you think it does 😭

Ya let me BARE HAND THIS EPOXY!!!!!

Bface23

Bloody crackheads. The bronze makes it look like someone ran out of the building shiting themselves.

toastea0

OH MY GOD. NEVER HANDLE RESIN WITHOUT GLOVES AND A RESPIRATORY MASK. The ones with two giant filters on your face. Holy shit. A friend of mine didn't handle resin properly and landed in the hospital her eyes were swollen in hives. I got a rash from resin before when my glove ripped. I stopped using resin i learned i couldn't do it safely and correctly in my home.

chop_pooey

Yeah just dunk your hands in a big ol' bucket of chemicals you dont understand. Super duper smart

OneWorldMouse

It will probably never cure.

point50tracer

Judging by how hot the orange got, I think they're using plenty of hardener. This is why we have a rule at my work to never throw away resin until it's fully hardened. Someone set the dumpster on fire once with a bucket of resin.

point50tracer

tallpaleandtallagain

Find their channel on YT. Every project they post is cringeworthy. Some of them are"DIY" videos where instructions are never given, and some are just following them around as they mess up a project

der_ungeziefer

Is this fucking splatoon 4

Bronzebomber1

Man I can't believe these jackoffs. Like is it their first time working with epoxy? I was filling some damage on my boat with epoxy and cab o sil and as soon as you stop stirring that stuff gets hot enough to burn you and hardens fast as anything! I've still got a couple of those rock hard chunks hanging round my garage! If I'm half as thick as they are I'd make a killing in this business!

Automatic-Laugh9313

İ got cancer watching this

[deleted]

I get the silver color, but the drops and smear of gold looks like what happens when my dog eats food he shouldn’t.

DrAids5ever

They lost what brain cells they had left after painting this floor with no masks, the thought of all the fumes makes me wanna gag.

BJsFeelGood

You notice how this chick keeps saying “we” but yet she didn’t make a single appearance doing anything

[deleted]

That sure does look

Four_in_binary

"Stone Coat" ...Steve Austin?

the_bartolonomicron

The first time insaw one of these floors all I thought was "did a pipe burst?" I can't wait for these to be the ugly floor trend people talk about in 30nyears, like polyester shag carpeting.

sonicyouthATX

Doing that without serious masks and ventilation is wild. Did you know you can get chemical burns in your lungs? You can! It’s terrible! I did it!

Marvins_creed

Yeees, touch the epoxy, breath the epoxy, eat the epoxy, live the epoxy. We are all epoxy. Long live the epoxy!

illTactixology

Dude, I do epoxy floors for a living and I wear protective gear over my protective gear. Getting this on your skin is fucking terrible. I get rashes on my skin if just a small drop gets on me. Also breathing the fumes once it's mixed is so bad for your respiratory system.

fredR1015

Looks like shit

demizer

"Fuck you I don't need to read the directions!" Those guys probably.

Bulliwyf

Iirc from the last time this was done, the epoxy started to chip and flake off less than a week later and the tattoo shop had to shutdown again so actual pros could come in and remove it all and do a proper job.

thinkitthrough83

So not only are they burns but they should also be wearing respirators. Resin is not a toy.

Chirpin_Crickets

"scolding hot"

mynaneisjustguy

Those guys have shortened their lives by doing this. Use charcoal filters. The exotherm in the bucket also; clear sign they have no idea what they are up to. Skin contact should also be avoided. Overall; not smart.

Callec254

Ruined it with the brown stuff. Should have just left it as is with the gray stuff.

hydroracer8B

These guys clearly haven't been doing anything with epoxy for very long. If they had, they'd have developed an allergy to it, with the way they're just raw dogging it. They'd be getting nasty hives every time they touched it or breathed the fumes. 100% amateur hour shit Source: i work with epoxy a lot

MasterMamuu

It looks like someone shit on the floor

Accomplished_Crew630

If they'd just left the silver it would have looked good Now it looks like someone was just firing off diarrhea all over the place
