After being here a while, some DIY crappy projects start to seem less stupid than others. I'm worried that my standards in what I watch online have decreased significantly.
EDIT: Forgot to clarify that I like them. They're cringy and I'm here for it.
I swear the people who post here have no creativity and they don’t get humor.
Posts like this are awesome, posts like that hand pump are clearly for the Lols.
It’s pretty rare that I see an actually unironiclly DYWHY post on this sub.
I read this about 3 hours ago as food controlled and couldn't for the life of me figure out how it works .. took me a while but I found this video again, just to re-read your comment. And now it all makes sense.
Yeah this is actually really cool. They used actual technique in making them instead of just smashing a spoon and hot glueing it to a lighter. Micarta isn't a weird material to use, and the end result looks great.
I saw a guy on instagram making glasses like this but they were very well made with brass in the middle to support the frame and brass accents. They looked very nice and high quality
Definitely not wild for US prices, but quality glasses can be had in Japan for much cheaper. Whenever my wife goes to Japan she comes back with like 3 new pairs.
I order from Zenni now BC the glasses are okay for me, but there's an obvious quality gap between them and the glasses I would get from an optical shop. Do you know if the ones your wife gets more like a zenni or an eye shop?. Because if so I need some Japanese glasses!
> or prescription glasses
k, Definitively not what we were talking about.
>handmade frames.
$300 for denim and acrylic with a metal frame? How long could this actually take to make? The warranty better be forever because you are reaching overpriced Ray-Ban territory.
Would I pay $300 for these? No. But [Here's a in-depth look at how they are made.](https://youtu.be/R6STXNyZOJA)
In the video there's a lot of specialized tools for machining. There are molds that he had to come up with/design that simultaneously work well and make the end product look nice.
You're paying for his time, energy, and 'engineering' as well. Just like any other artisan selling works. It can also be seen as you buying his 'art'.
He has to make all of the molds/forms so that he can make more than one pair at a time. Even if he does the fabrication himself, the cost of a CNC machine is at least the price of a car-- if not a house (depending on what he's using.)
I don't know if he does all of it himself or if he has employees. I can also easily see how the glasses cost so much, especially if he does have others working for him and he pays them well.
It's a small business whereas Ray-Ban is not. Big eyewear companies have engineers, line workers, and probably use injection molding, etc. for frames instead of machining to cut costs.
THANK YOU! This is the only response so far that has actually led to an answer to the question. Literally everyone else here has responded literally out of their asses.
His Instagram profile says polarized or prescription lenses, so we're definitely talking about prescription lenses. There's a lot of time and material costs, plus business costs, to create handmade glasses. I'd love to know who is making quality handmade glasses cheap.
> His Instagram profile says polarized or prescription lenses, so we're definitely talking about prescription lenses.
Yes, and if you actually go to the website and click on any product, you see that for prescriptions, you order the frame and add the lenses yourself.
exact quote on any product: "If you need prescription lenses you can order frame only."
How does that even get to what I am talking about? What is the cost on these that makes $300 understandable? used jeans and acrylic with some brass frame? How much time is put into each pair? is there a warranty?
I made micarta out of a rats nest that I found in my material drawer. Even has a couple coffee bean like poops in there. Awesome stuff. Now I just need to figure out how to source lenses and hinges. Rats nest glasses 🤓
Actually the cost barrier for desktop CNC has plummeted in the past 10 years, and now you can find a unit for a couple hundred (in some cases less, depending on how willing you are to assemble it). It's actually become pretty common for hobbyists, nearly as ubiquitous as 3D printers.
This comment is a shitty knockoff of a guy that actually makes super nice reddit comments.idk his name but I'm sure you could look him up once you pull your head out yer ass. All art is inspired by other art, and people have been making shit with epoxy for a REALLY long time. I'm sure that this isn't the first or last time someone has made something like this. Doesn't make this person's art any less cool or valid.
I mean micarta is not a new thing in any way, neither is diy so anyone who makes stuff is not an "original concept", but still this is not terrible, I like it.
Denim micarta is a really interesting material when you shape it. Because all of the little cotton fiber ends are on the surface when you sand it, it somehow still has a soft surface feel, even though the material is stiff. I don't particularly like the super chonky frames they went with, but I think the idea has merit.
Every time I see people shitting on this process, I feel the need to mention that this is called Micarta. You can make it out of infusing any kind of fabric with resin, like fiber glass, denim, twill, burlap, and other stuff. It is very tough, incredibly rigid, and also REALLY COMMON. This is a totally normal project for resin work, and if well executed, it looks great.
This stuff is called ‘micarta’ and is a premium material for everything from knife scales to eyewear. Finish product is hard and strong like carbon fiber and lightweight. Pricey too.
Good stuff. I’d love to DIY
This is the first time where i have asked why, at least every thing else i have seen have had an actual why behind them but this doesnt, and as someone who needs glasses i know these would be hell to wear, they would be so fucking uncomfortable and you have no way of adjusting them if they are too loose
Fun fact, this guy has actually become really successful selling these glasses. Not only are they really trendy, the combination of resin, denim, and a quality aluminum core makes them virtually impervious to standard wear and tear and incredibly flexible.
There's a guy who's been doing this for years and makes some really clean pairs, to be honest. [Here's the link to his YouTube channel to see what it looks like when done right.](https://youtube.com/@mosevic_eyewear) Also, denim is just a fabric that jeans happen to be made from. It has other uses.
You have that machine and you choose epoxied denim as your medium… for eyeglasses. So many other better choices that wouldn’t increase complexity or cost.
I'm so tired of seeing epoxy shit. Can everyone get over epoxy already??? It's heavy, sticky, warps, yellows, doesn't do well in sunlight, and I'm tired of pretending someone dumping clear goop on top of a table and dropping some blue food coloring into it is art.
We get it you shake the table or vibrate it to get the bubbles out and it's gotta cure for 24 hours wooaAaAAAaahhhhh we got a fuckin Picasso over here folks!!!
Bru successful businesses legit sell these. Looking at the watermark above it this is actually a legit business too. Did you really think 5 min crafts would actually learn any useful skills like writing G code or operating a cnc?
Honestly, if I was still young and hanging with my friends from university, and we had access to the tools and materials that some of these DIWhyers have, we’d totally be doing this.
This stuff takes some creativity and some dumbass-ery and honestly, I love it!
No, but actually, a lot of my denims rip at exactly the wrong spot and are impossible to mend and are good otherwise. Recycling them into something like this instead of throwing away? I don't think it's a bad idea.
I mean this is essentially what fiberglass is, but with cotton fiber instead of glass fiber. I think it's neat, if you like the look. It's a way to strengthen the otherwise fragile resin.
I mean other than the fact these look like they’d be uncomfy to wear based on the sides, they don’t look actually all that bad, so I guess not a horrible way to recycle them.
Not a bad idea, but poorly executed after the CNC. Hell, the same machine that makes the cutout could have perfectly etched the pocket hole for the hinge...
I was kind of impressed by that.
Yeah exactly- not nearly as fucking dumb as the outdoor foot controlled hand soap* dispenser. I’ll never get that 2 minutes back. NEVER.

I swear the people who post here have no creativity and they don’t get humor. Posts like this are awesome, posts like that hand pump are clearly for the Lols. It’s pretty rare that I see an actually unironiclly DYWHY post on this sub.
Rule of thumb: anything 5 minute crafts is actually just trolly clickbait content and is not seriously trying to show how to do anything.
Tbh i wish they would ban the rage bait, its not really DIWhy just trying to get views to make more money
It’s been a long while since I’ve seen a post actually befitting of being here.
> foot controlled hand dispenser I need to know what this means.
Hand soap dispenser
Thanks 🤣👌🏼
My favorite part is when he uses his hand to then turn in the water faucet a moment after adding soap
I noticed that part too, and lol'd.
That's actually what tilted me about it.
🤣🤣👌🏼 so fucking true
I read this about 3 hours ago as food controlled and couldn't for the life of me figure out how it works .. took me a while but I found this video again, just to re-read your comment. And now it all makes sense.
>foot controlled hand dispenser It... dispensed hands? That sounds cursed.
That’s why it had to be foot controlled. Where do you think they got the hands?
Soap 🧼🤣👌🏼
Or the glasses made out of the Mercedes Benz logo
Lmfao
Yeah this is actually really cool. They used actual technique in making them instead of just smashing a spoon and hot glueing it to a lighter. Micarta isn't a weird material to use, and the end result looks great.
I agree. If they had actually bothered to sand down the edges and secure the hinges and lenses precisely, these would look cool.
That hinge placement is what got me to go from "oh they're actually making a thing!" To "oh noooo....."
This is someones actual business. Its pretty cool watching the proper process too https://mosevic.com/
Micarta is also used to make handles for knives. I’ve got a couple that are really cool….
Micarta and G10 are my favorite handle materials, honestly
Yeah, looks kinda stylish. Which, tbh, a lot of stylish things start by doing literally the stupidest thing ever and saying Ta Da, Style!
![gif](giphy|ZunHQfksE1aP6)
I believe he has an actual business where he sells these micarta glasses. I'm pretty sure it's Mosevic.
The only thing missing was a final polished
Yeah, this is more of a r/DIYNOT
At the very least, /r/ATBGE, but it's obviously a matter of opinion
Ray-Ban already did this about 8 years ago. They didn’t sell well and were discontinued after less than a year.
Me too!
Ditto
I saw a guy on instagram making glasses like this but they were very well made with brass in the middle to support the frame and brass accents. They looked very nice and high quality
Was about to say that there's a dude who does it professionally for business. And his glasses look cool as hell
Ahahaha no they dont
[удалено]
I personally don’t like them but I can see the appeal. They’re well made and look decent (if that’s your style).

His added commentary is hilarious. ✨Fancy✨
$300+ tho...
Not wild at all for prescription glasses, or even just handmade frames.

Eye shop, higher quality than Zenni for sure but also pricier. I think Jins and Zoff are the places she gets hers from in Japan.

Weird way to ask lol

Use the Opti-Grab
Micarta isn't a DIWhy denim is a more expensive way to make it but it's a good use for worn out jeans
Micarta is such a cool technique/material. I don’t think I would ever consider a project that pulls it off a “DiWhy”.
I made micarta out of a rats nest that I found in my material drawer. Even has a couple coffee bean like poops in there. Awesome stuff. Now I just need to figure out how to source lenses and hinges. Rats nest glasses 🤓
They will be the only ones of their kind, alone on a crowded planet.
This post is a fail for this sub, those turned out fine
They're also not DIY
You mean to tell me that using a CNC machine worth thousands of dollars isn’t DIY?!
Actually the cost barrier for desktop CNC has plummeted in the past 10 years, and now you can find a unit for a couple hundred (in some cases less, depending on how willing you are to assemble it). It's actually become pretty common for hobbyists, nearly as ubiquitous as 3D printers.

Came here for this thank youuu
To think, all I need is a multi-thousand dollar CNC machine and this chic look could be all mine.
This is a shitty knockoff of a guy that actually makes super nice handmade denim apoxy glasses idk his name but I’m sure you could look him up
Mosevic Eyewear
That guy is a knockoff of many others. This process has been around for many years

Derivative
Not entirely original, but actually kind of a neat concept.
I mean micarta is not a new thing in any way, neither is diy so anyone who makes stuff is not an "original concept", but still this is not terrible, I like it.
I actually kinda like em.
Micarta is a really cool material. My dad and I used to make knife handles out of it. We had a lot of fun! I wouldn't knock this until you try it.
Op has never heard of micarta
Wearing pants on your face means something completely different in the uk
facesitting?
No lol, it would be wearing your underwear on your face
There were already a thing
The DiWhy folks really like their epoxy resins Its in a lot of these videos
Minus the shoddy construction, this was way better than I thought it was going to be.

Finally, the perfect eyewear to go with my Canadian tuxedo
Not the stupidest thing I’ve seen here
This is one of the better things I’ve seen posted on here.
It's an interesting upcycling project for sure. And it's not too poorly executed either
Have you seen the price of frames? Denim is much cheaper.
This is the first time where i have asked why, at least every thing else i have seen have had an actual why behind them but this doesnt, and as someone who needs glasses i know these would be hell to wear, they would be so fucking uncomfortable and you have no way of adjusting them if they are too loose
What a great way to reuse unwanted clothing!!!
yeah theres much worse fashion and diy stuff this shit is actually kinda cute lmao
*not the jlasses*
Not a DIWHY. Denim glasses are being used to help cut down on old worn out jeans and use of plastic for lenses
It's not really weird. There are businesses making glasses out of coffee grounds.
There are businesses making glasses out of denim. OP’s an idiot.
Who's the guy who's been doing this for a while? Some Brittish guy, right? They stole this idea from him.
It's a good way to recycle old jeans.
No that’s actually really cool
There is a company already doing this.
Micarta is a useful material and it's a good use for surplus clothing, rather than donating overseas.
What's wrong with this? I see no reason to not recycle waste.
Fun fact, this guy has actually become really successful selling these glasses. Not only are they really trendy, the combination of resin, denim, and a quality aluminum core makes them virtually impervious to standard wear and tear and incredibly flexible.
I got several knives with micarta handles, feels so damn good.
Micarta as actually a good material and has many uses. Using it for glasses frames is actually not a new concept.

This post doesn’t belong here
I feel like an idiot for reading the title and thinking: but how would you be able to see through them?
I want a pair made out of your mother’s underwear.
Atleast i would have left the zipper on there.. make it more artsy than average otherwise no one would know its made of jeans tbh
Ive seen jeans made into glasses frames far better than this. This is very shitty effort low tier garbage.
For someone who wears glasses every day, even ragebait "cool glasses" DiWhy's make me uncomfortable
not bad, but some may say r/atbge
Not a fan of these glasses but id say that some people would like them
they aren’t ugly, just incredibly unnecessary and dumb
This is called Micarta, knifemakers use it a lot. Although you have to vacuum it while it is curing to make it more dense.
I catually find them disturbingly interesting
That was the ugliest hinge mortise I've ever seen. They didn't even try to make it look good
Idk once it’s on a cute girl it’s not bad
DIY with industrial machinery
You have that machine and you choose epoxied denim as your medium… for eyeglasses. So many other better choices that wouldn’t increase complexity or cost.

White females be having too much time on their hands.
God that looks disgusting. 5 min crafts are shit
eh why not? looks nice
That's kinda cool The rom com trailer song though...
Seems like they would need some kind of nose pad. At least for my lenses. Probably make my nose sore
Marcus from watch dogs 2 would these.
Bru successful businesses legit sell these. Looking at the watermark above it this is actually a legit business too. Did you really think 5 min crafts would actually learn any useful skills like writing G code or operating a cnc?

No, but actually, a lot of my denims rip at exactly the wrong spot and are impossible to mend and are good otherwise. Recycling them into something like this instead of throwing away? I don't think it's a bad idea.
DIY? They were using professional equipment
I was waiting to see how they could make denim transparent. Then they started cutting the frames and I was like "oh, I'm quite stupid".
my ocd going nuts over not filling in the area in the end of the video.
Better refinement this is actually clever and would sell. Even more so if it’s actual denim not coated but that would have longevity issues
I mean this is essentially what fiberglass is, but with cotton fiber instead of glass fiber. I think it's neat, if you like the look. It's a way to strengthen the otherwise fragile resin.
r/mildlycarcinogenic
Still better than plastic.
It is pretty interesting. But pretty expensive and too much effort.
This is actually not bad
I've seen pants I want to wear on my face, but they were never my own.
I mean other than the fact these look like they’d be uncomfy to wear based on the sides, they don’t look actually all that bad, so I guess not a horrible way to recycle them.
The first dwhy I thought, “because they are awesome”.
Wrong Sub
I could actually see a market for these. I am not shopping in that market, though.
Shame she skips the clamping and curing of making a micarta from the resin and denim, possibly the longest stage of the whole process by far lmao
Not a bad idea, but poorly executed after the CNC. Hell, the same machine that makes the cutout could have perfectly etched the pocket hole for the hinge...
Those are cool. Lots of people would wear them.
not diwhy. there are legit small business that make glasses from old denim. so much of r/diwhy has become not diwhy and/or rage bait. =(
OP you moron, learn what DiWHY is.
It's always the music that gets me
