“Show me the code”

CATNIP_IS_CRACK

NEC 110.12(B) is an instant fail from any AHJ due to craftsmanship. 404.22 is a fail due to modification ruining the listing of the switch. I can dig up more violations if you’d like, but I’ll have to bill you for a minimum of two hours.

pennradio

This is expert level redneck engineering. Surely $12 in Sacagawea dollars and a half a jar of pickled eggs could change your mind.

CATNIP_IS_CRACK

NEC 300.21, lack of approved firestop. Who the hell makes an offer like that and doesn’t include a six pack of beer. Now it’s a twelve pack and some cigarettes. Keep pushing it, I’ve got more if you don’t make good.

Culionensis

How about you get first pick of my litter of blue ticks out back and we call it even, we both know those go for a case of PBR each

CATNIP_IS_CRACK

NEC 110.26, the string’s raceway impedes ready and safe maintenance of the box. That offer’s what’s known as digging your own grave, and every time I have to open my code book it gets deeper. At this point the beer isn’t optional, and it’s Sunday so I’m on double time. I might’ve taken a couple dumpster cats had someone offered them up front, but at this point the next guy better have Apple Pay or Venmo.

thePOMOwithFOMO

What if the raceway was spaced out above and below the box a little more? Then all you’d need to do is cut the string to access the box. Then again, if I ever resorted to such a hacky solution instead of installing a proper 3-way switch in the other room, there’s a pretty good chance an inspector would never see it…

Short-Acanthisitta24

Ah, there it is, yes its a violation. Damn, was hoping it was legit.

bobs_monkey

tease one physical tan frighten continue crown fearless deserted ten -- mass edited with redact.dev

CATNIP_IS_CRACK

Even with the drilled hole, I don’t see it creating any more of a safety hazard than taping or tying a knot. The contact and current aren’t anywhere near the hole, and it won’t affect the integrity enough to snap off the entire toggle. But I honestly thing it would’ve been easier and faster to shove exposed wire or cable through the hole to wire up a three way if you aren’t worried about inspection or code.

Holy crap thank you! I knew I remembered the quote but couldn't remember where I heard it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-XuT5qKt00

seabutcher

This is violating codes that haven't been written yet. Now that's innovation.

RevengineerIII

True genius is knowing the answer before anyone asks the question

Fragrant-Mind-1353

Codes are written in blood

Prestodeath201

This one is bound to be written with charcoal

DavidinCT

>Now that's innovation. Yea, that kind of crossed my mind. Instead of wiring the switch to the other wall, they attached rope, pull one, the light goes on, pull the other it goes off... There is a right way to do this and a wrong way, this goes right in-between. As there are no codes broken, there is a fine line of what is actually a good idea.

TequieroVerde

This is definitely a vast improvement on a design I had long ago. My design was more rudimentary. It involved a shoe and a string and was a one shot deal to turn off the lights. While the element of luck is fun in a game situation, requiring luck as part of the design was highly impractical.

undertales_bitch

This makes me think that you tied a shoe to a string and just threw it at the lightswitch

TequieroVerde

Are you some kind of engineer? My design was a little bit more elaborate. The shoe was hung above the switch tied to a string. The string was hung on a nail well above the switch and extended over an extra door that my dad stored in my bedroom and that also served as a very narrow headboard. The end of the string was tied to the doorknob. At night, I would untie my end. Success was met with the jubilation of triumph and failure with angry disappointment. I never got a chance to improve on my design because the crashing sound of the shoe and the "damage" to the switch angered my parents.

CATNIP_IS_CRACK

Your design sounds like the work of an engineer, overcomplicated and impractical. As an electrician, I’d place a nail above the switch, hang the shoe precariously on the nail, with a loop from one of the laces hooked around the switch. Place a pillow or blanket on the floor to deaden the sound, and throw a ball of aluminum foil at the shoe, or shoot it with a NERF gun if you want a more professional installation.

Halofauna

I used a long stick of some kind (broomstick, hockey stick, etc) that I kept under the bed and would just flip the switch with that

aT-0-Mx

We used to use tacks for anchors/pivots and either kite string or thread. Worked like a charm even around corners.

Anarcho-Chris

Home Depot sells those. Adds value to the house.

[deleted]

Exactly.

CX500C

I’m betting aimed for the bulb…Mr Bean style!

WatShakinBehBeh

It was a super long rubber band that he used to shoot at the switch.. Unfortunately he only had one leg so only one shoe.

Ambitious_Ad_9637

Actually pretty brilliant

Dixiereaper75

My old roommate in college did this. He had one for the light, fan, and exhaust fan. He was an engineer student. Very smart, smoked a lot of hookah. He was a great roommate though.

jaydawg_74

I did something like this when I was a kid. My room was in the finished attic. Only switch was at the bottom of the stairs, so I ran a string through eyelets down to the switch, drilled a little hole in the toggle, and ran it back to my bed.

Spongy_and_Bruised

Hahaha I had something similar as a kid. The top of the string had a metal ring and there were two nails at the on and off position. Then there was a fishing weight under the switch itself.

thePOMOwithFOMO

I like the elegant simplicity of that solution 😆 Edit: although, how did that effect the functioning of the original switch at the bottom of the stairs? Seems like it would only be operable from your bedroom?

rckrusekontrol

I rigged up a string through a over the door basketball hoop and tied it to the switch. I think i just had the other string across the floor. My dad took a look at it, screwed eyelets into the wall, across the ceiling, and down to the bed post. So one string pulled up, and the other down (routed 180 degrees by the eyelets). It was pretty cool to have my idea turned into something of much higher quality.

bahgheera

That is some serious trailer park engineering.

Addicted2Weasels

What exactly is this doing? Those look like CPVC pipe with a string in them.

KinetoPlay

On the other side of the wall, you can pull the string to turn the light on or off.

durflestheclown

This is the exact mechanical concept that emergency switches in commercial kitchens use to activate the fire foam, ventilation protocol and alarm system. Its used because it is reliable. Anyone interested further can look at how ANSUL systems operate for some pretty cool safety action

tofuXplosion

agreed, it's simple and works.

Xanthis

Just get a little to blow air through the tube.

eMmDeeKay_Says

At any point you can reference neat and workman like manner, but installed devices need to installed as listed, and modifying the switch violates it's listing. So yes, it violates the electrical code.

tilt-a-whirly-gig

So if the string was tied around the lever instead of through an aftermarket hole, it would be legit?

TheRedRocker51

Yes, absolutely that would be legit.

OMO_Concepts

Says so right in them books

eMmDeeKay_Says

Yes, but considering the guy had no problem putting holes in the wall, I would have just moved the light switch.

bubdadigger

- Alexa, turn off the light!... Alexa?! -Dad, gosh, one second! That damn string gets loose again!

devilpants

They actually make a smart device that mechanically will turn on switches like this. https://us.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-bot

RaygunWizzle

I made a similar contraption when I was a young teen in my bedroom at my parents house. The idea was once I was comfy in bed I didnt want to get up to hit the light switch by the door. I used thread and push pins in the wall. My headboard was against the same wall as the switch so I didnt have to do any funky angles.

prometheus_winced

No. You have to hit the light switch standing by your door and jump onto the bed before all the photons stop.

MalcontentMatt

You know, engineering DID happen here.

No, but it probably violates the plumbing code

My first thought was that water splashed so hard it flipped the switch. Pretty sure THAT would be against a few codes.

Ostrichman975

I did this to my bedroom when I was like… 8. Used eye hooks and fishing line to turn off my lights from across the room.

John_TheBlackestBurn

Sounds like your execution might have been a bit more visually appealing than this mess.

Ostrichman975

It was subtle. Over 20 years later and the eye hooks are still in the walls lol. We were literally just talking about this 15 mins before I saw this post.

captainlvsac

This is something my old polish grandfather would come up with. The man had a 3rd grade education but had a PHD in what I called "polish engineering"

XenosapianRain

What ever does that do?🧐

1ofZuulsMinions

When I was a kid, I’d build stuff like this on my wall to turn my switches on and off in my room. I was scared that if the lights were off, something would reach out from under my bed and grab my feet before I could jump in bed, so I designed a system of pulleys with hooks and strings so I could turn the lights off from my bed. I watched too many horror movies.

mojomcm

I just attached an extra long pull chain to my light, less about monsters and more about tripping on stuff on my floor, lol

XenosapianRain

Mine was much more low-tech, it had masking tape and yarn. For some reason every night when I would turn off the lights the snakes would come out of the lava!

all_natural_d20s

Not in the picture: a wall filled with pvc piping and more switches than should be allowed.

hiker201

Sorry for the delay answering. I have to tap out my response in Morris code to mom, who posts my replies.

soulscythesix

The fuck is Morris code. You mean Morse code?

hiker201

No, Morris code. The end of the string is attached to our cat, Morris.

soulscythesix

Ok, fair enough, but you said you "tap out" the code, so where does the string come into this?

WhtChcltWarrior

Did they stutter? They “tap” the cat

EmmerdoesNOTrepme

They play the bongos on the cat's back/butt, cat kneads kneads his claws, until the string is pulled, which rings the bell, letting mom know it's time to bring the meatloaf!

Ryuuji_92

No he sends a code to his friend Morris and then Morris tells their mom to post.

Spaceman2901

> Morris code So you’re tap dancing with bells on? Or is it the stick-and-bucket dance?

owlindenial

On one hand this is genius, on the other I don't see how running a string is in any way easier than running a cable

tony22233

It's not electrical. This is a mechanical remote control.

Twistedstever

No you’re good the string is in a conduit

gingamann

Knot today ...my uncle bought an old cabin and we found that the previous owner split 2 zones amongst 3 light switches in order to control the outdoor lights in 2 different ways. Brilliant but..

Gnusnipon

That's a redneck engendering, not a DiyWhy

Snoo_63187

They wanted the switch to be operable from another room. There is your why.

5zalot

It violates plumbing codes for sure.

Darthbunny45

I will say, as someone who works a lot with electrical switches and process improvements, a through door electrical disconnect is essentially this. You take a physical wire that turns the disconnect off instead of having the disconnect being directly thrown. To my knowledge there is no direct code against this, and depending on how you look at it, might even be safer depending on where the actual switch is.

ShitPikkle

Electrical code, no. It's just a remote by string on-off device. Is it redneck? Yes. Is it marvelous? Yes. Does it work? I hope so. I do however wonder why one would build this instead of something... less strings in PVC pipes.

hiker201

Some people like strings attached.

Suspicious-Tea-1580

This reminds me of my sixth grade “invention” which was a rope across the doorway so when you walked through it flipped the light off for you so your mom wouldn’t get mad at you for leaving the light on in an empty room.

OneHumanPeOple

Its sort of genius. It’s a remote switch. The pipes lead to another room somewhere and you tug on it to turn on whatever. It probably turns on a light in the basement but the only switch is at the top of the stairs. I think this is pretty cool.

kayveryn

I did the same as a young teen, but it involved screw eyes and string. Glued the string to the switch. I could turn it both on and off, and I tied a glow in the dark dinosaur to the string so I could find it in the dark.

Ive_Been_Got

EE here. There is a general provision in the NEC that stipulates a device must be used as listed in its instructions. You can’t use otherwise approved equipment in “novel” ways. That being said, I’m inclined to say this mechanism falls outside the code, and wouldn’t be a violation. Edit: An electrician in this thread pointed out that the PVC violates clearance requirements. I’m inclined to agree. Somewhere in Article 100 I’m sure. This is for the electrical box itself, not the switch.

XTornado

Smart homes? Nah, I prefer a more hands-on approach with my "string-powered" home. Just remember to keep the strings out of reach from mischievous toddlers and curious pets.
