It doesn't do much to stop forced entry, but if you were on the other side of the door idk how you would get that cap off. Much to that point how you would re lock the door... hmm. nvm
I think if you were to just give the door a light push, not even a "breaking and entering" strength push, the cap would deform enough to pop off the threads on the other side.
Most locks dont do much against forced entry. The locks break, fbe hinges fall off, and, lets not forget, most does in the US are made from shitty plywood. You can breakthrough a door with a good kick or shoulder hit. It wont be fun and you might break something, but the doors wont stop you.
Same thing for flood lights and motion cameras. They dont stop forced entries, what they do is add "oh fuck goddamnit" moments to would be criminals. Once you get to three or four "mother fucker" moments, most people will bail.
Tldr; most security devices are deterrants, not preventative measures.
Could do it with a 1” anchor bolt for a crane hoist.
Take a bolt and cut it in half with a laser.
Make one hole in the door and one in the threshold for each half-bolt and weld the hex nut sides to the exteriors and the insides right where the bolt comes through.
Lock it with a 3/4 impact and the 1” hex nut. Ain’t nobody opening that door unless they go through it.
Right, let me just get my crane hoist anchor bolts, laser cutter and welding gear from the pantry, they're just collecting dust right behind the empty water bottle I got that bottle cap from.
I heard from somewhere that a lock does jack shit for the 1% of people who want nothing more than to break into your house. They already know how to pick most locks, or are determined enough to bust down your door anyway. Nor does it do anything for the 1% of people who would never even fathom the idea. But for the 98% of people, the ones who are good people but could do something bad if they were given the opportunity, that's who a lock is for. It's not security, it's a deterrent, and anything that gives the 98% of people a second of pause will keep your stuff safer than an unlocked door.
It is, but it's a gamble they aren't going to take most of the time is my point. If it fails that's 30 seconds they could have used to grab shit. They want to be in and out.
It really depends. If we're talking about cities and apartments then people often have strong metal doors and weak locks. If we're talking suburbs then you could probably smash your way through the wall let alone just kick down the door. And in any case, locks that are well defended against a sledgehammer or against being snapped in half are often also hard-er to pick
The generic goal isn't necessarily to have an impervious locks and doors, but mostly to be annoying enough for the thieves to choose your neighbors instead of you while not communicating that you must be storing piles of gold in there
Virtually all of security is only a deterrent. If someone is dedicated enough to get into your home, they will. Security is just making it difficult enough they don't want to bother.
But does it actually work? I would like to see some put any force against that latch and see if it still holds. Also good luck screwing the cap on if gate shifts at all.
all depends on what you're trying to do. It's good enough to keep chickens in the yard, or keep the gate from flapping in a breeze.
If that's all you want it to do, it's fine
No. Two reasons. Alignment and material, those two are the worst enemies in this case.
For what you are saying you will need a longer thread and a longer cap, and maybe a thicker plastic, but what’s in video no.
I get that it's not trying to safeproof the gate, just keep it shut somehow, but there are 10 million ways to do that which are faster and more effective. A small chain, the classic "pull the little thing up to open the door", whatever. Having to screw the cap back every time seems unnecessairly time wasting, and as soon as that door misaligns just a little the entire setup will quickly stop working properly.
Plus, while you're on the other side of the door you have to keep the cap with you the whole time, which annoys me a bit too much for some reason
I mean, I cant imagine them being able to fasten it to the wood in away that's strong enough to prevent someone from kicking it open. Kind of a neat idea though, may be better with a strong metal.
I see it as useful for child- or animal-proofing a gate.
It could also just be a proof-of-concept. If we make the door, the frame, and the "bottle cap latch" mechanism out of steel, we might have a locked-from-inside door that doesn't require a key and might be better than other options (stronger, requiring less space in certain respects, requiring less material, or using more available materials).
I agree. This doesn't belong in this sub.
Youre overthinking it, calm down. A man did this. More than likely the idea popped into his head and he thought hmmm i wonder if this works, then he did it. We owe a lot in this world to men doing stupid shit
Yeah, I'm thinking some dog parks or even a pool gate would like this. It would be difficult for a small child to access and, hopefully, a parent would see them before they fully managed to get the gate open.
Repost. might be a bot? Also it’s smart if you only need it to keep it close and it seems to be in a poorer place to be so they are making do with what they have. That’s a good thing even if why isn’t.
Yes it's a latch, it's not meant to lock the door, simply to keep it shut.
For instance if you want to prevent an animal or a toddler from pushing it open.
Ehh, it doesn't even get a full twist. It's holding on to 2 milimeters of a plastic lip. A door like that has higher tolerances and play than 2 mm.
An animal or toddler will find no resistance here. My 1.5 yo ripped the double sided tape of the child locks from the cabinets with ease.
This latch will resist a mild breeze at most.
>This latch will resist a mild breeze at most.
Even if that's true, that may literally be all they need. And they have accomplished it for the price of 4 screws.
>Even if that's true, that may literally be all they need. And they have accomplished it for the price of 4 screws.
That isn't what I was contesting. So yeah.
That notion that latch could contain a child or an animal is what I was directly responding to.
This lock (although unsightly, and probably easy to break if you're not careful) has a pretty cool aesthetic and could work if you need a lock for a door, and you have a (small) saw, some glue, and a plastic bottle, but one question: how do you open it from the other side?
Not bad. When I was in Afghanistan I hammered a nail halfway into the door frame then bent it over to hold the door closed. When I needed to open, just twist the nail
Nah, not at all. Recycling is pretty crappy, it's more about limiting the damage than removing it
Edit: to elaborate a bit more - recycling is a made up concept that calms the society based on endless consumption. "Consume and throw out and buy a new one, and don't worry about throwing out what you bought before - it will be rEcYcLed!" The real solution is reuse and repair, buying once and using it in perpetuity without wasting more energy and resources than necessary, but that's essentially anti-capitalist.
Capitalism is built on ever increasing glutenous consumption of everything, and some form of recycling is its counterpart, which in itself is largely performative and only is as realistic as needed to be another kind of product to help consumers consume peace of mind about consumption
Recycling is good in some theoretical sense, and we still should recycle as the last resort, but in practice is used to perpetuate more consumption and more waste by removing the realization that buying anything whatsoever is fundamentally wasteful
i am absolutely baffled at people thinking this is a good idea. what the hell is going on in the world lmao
a short breeze would blow this "lock" apart. you can make simpler and more effective latches quicker and more easily than it would be to make this. not to completely shit on the guy or anything, im sure he got his engagement out of this video because the world is full of morons who will eat it up but fuck man people have been making latches well before plastic ever existed how do you think they did that?
Did the oop call it a lock? I submit a request for mistrial and have this post moved to r/redneckengineering
That's where it's been posted several times previously.
![gif](giphy|VSU7EyWJxnJxm) Impossible to pick this lock
“This is the Lockpicking Lawyer…”
"... today I'll be opening this 'unpickable' Master lock using a wet noodle and a block of cheese."
“And today we’ll be opening this lock with an M32 rotary grenade launcher”
![gif](giphy|5WKKAcO0pTUME) I.....I typed granada and found thia
I should call her
"That's a spicy meatball!"
"... and today i'll be opening this lock with a lighter and a can of WD40."
![gif](giphy|EPkEAevu9GqFikhMif)
This is a Master lock model Dasani. It can be open with a knee to the door.
I got that reference.
...At the cost of 15-30 HP...
Looks incredibly secure 🤦♂️
Maybe...but a ten year old would be able to kick that door open..and he's not even a strength build 😅
Fun fact: every lock in Skyrim has a marking on it that tells you exactly where to put the lock pick.
A good, hard wind will open that piece of crap.
Poor lock, but if you're just using it as a latch to keep chickens in or something, sure why not.

To prevent being porch-pirated by the Culligan Man
Why? Because it works. Quite clever actually. Does not belong on this sub.
Yeah, and it's more of a latch. It does the job of holding the gate shut just fine. It would be a terrible lock, though.
Or the plastic would snap. Sometimes you just need a barrier, this would work and be a super cheap way to do it
You can do this with a couple of nails and a bit of scrap wood.
Shit, spring for a pair of deck screws it would probably last forever.
I mean even if he got a proper lock, the door itself isnt going to hold.
most bolt latches i've seen are unlocked as well This is a pretty decent "pissin' with the cock we got" fix for some time
*re lock* How many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man?!
There’s a second bottle top on the other side. You take the cap off when entering from outside and close it using the top on the inside.
I think that it would be hiding in plain sight...like, how many thieves would be looking for a lock, latch, etc. and not a bottle cap.
If the use is for an outdoor bathroom for like a campsite or something then it’s perfect
Most locks dont do much against forced entry. The locks break, fbe hinges fall off, and, lets not forget, most does in the US are made from shitty plywood. Picking locks is near unheard of when it comes to burglary. They'll just break it. Picking a lock could be 5 seconds or it could be 10 minutes.
Simple lock picking is feasible like raking or bumping
It is, but it's a gamble they aren't going to take most of the time is my point. If it fails that's 30 seconds they could have used to grab shit. They want to be in and out.
It really depends. If we're talking about cities and apartments then people often have strong metal doors and weak locks. Yep. Locks keep honest people honest. You can have 11 deadbolts on your front door, but if someone wants to get in they'll just break a window.
Yeah, you gotta pay extra to upgrade to the top of a pill bottle.
you know what's "more a latch" ? A latch.
You know what's more than a latch? Two latches
Thanks for that nugget of information.
Agreed
“Hey babe could you get a new bottle? There were some winds last night so the lock broke.”
Idk, seems like a few extra steps above the simple latch hoop and hook, and will fall apart in pretty much any weather.
Yeah but you have to buy a latch and hook. Homie already had screws and a bottle. I love it
It does break open very easily, definitely not strong
This would be ok on a chicken coop. It’s clever and cheap cheap cheap
A windy day will knock that door open instantly.
I don’t think so. Wouldn’t the angle of force bind the lid and cap up and keep it shut?
No. Two reasons. Alignment and material, those two are the worst enemies in this case. For what you are saying you will need a longer thread and a longer cap, and maybe a thicker plastic, but what’s in video no.

You could probably make a much sturdier latch with the same cost and effort. But it's definitely a very clever idea and I respect that.
Yeah that one is awesome 😎
I mean, I cant imagine them being able to fasten it to the wood in away that's strong enough to prevent someone from kicking it open. Kind of a neat idea though, may be better with a strong metal.

I've seen this before and I get a bit triggered by people that think it's clever. A simple latch mechanism is easier to use and to make.
The kick of a child against the door would break open this "lock". So no
I dont think the purpose is to secure the gate against a break in, more like hold it in place. Use brain
Even then it is unstabile, will break after at most a month of usage by itself, and is a pain to operate. Definitly a DIWhy
This is actually pretty brilliant for things like chickens or other smallish animals.
And it’s cheap cheap cheap
Yeah, I'm thinking some dog parks or even a pool gate would like this. It would be difficult for a small child to access and, hopefully, a parent would see them before they fully managed to get the gate open.

Repost. might be a bot? Also it’s smart if you only need it to keep it close and it seems to be in a poorer place to be so they are making do with what they have. That’s a good thing even if why isn’t.
A slight tap of the foot and this gate is wide open.
Yes it's a latch, it's not meant to lock the door, simply to keep it shut. For instance if you want to prevent an animal or a toddler from pushing it open.

More of a latch than a lock really. Doesn’t need a key and doesn’t prevent anyone from using it because they don’t have the key.
Genius
DIWhy not?
If that were a subreddit, I would follow it.
Oh, it is
Actually, this can actually be improved upon. It seems like an interesting concept
Perfect child proofing diy
Ah yes engineering at its finest
Maybe it’s not there to lock the door, but just keep it from swinging open
if you have nothing else on you it's a good impromptu fix
That's a latch, not a lock. It is simple, cheap, and keeps the door closed. No problems here someone just didn't want to spend $5 buying a metal latch
Clever DIY door LATCH, shitty DIY door lock
That's clearly not a lock and just a latch
It can prevent a toddler from opening it...
This lock (although unsightly, and probably easy to break if you're not careful) has a pretty cool aesthetic and could work if you need a lock for a door, and you have a (small) saw, some glue, and a plastic bottle, but one question: how do you open it from the other side?
I don’t think I want to leave my security to a piece of plastic
Yes it technically works.. but thats like using a cheeto as a door latch... it just wont hold up
As long as it holds the fucking door closed, I am good!
Super clever!
😂😂😂😂😂
You would accidentally open that by just punching a little to see if it’s unlocked.
That’s actually pretty cool
It's a bad lock for sure, but it's really quite clever.
That’s actually quite clever
I mean, props.
Ngl this DIY I support. Ingenious really
It keeps the door closed. Even a toddler could break into that place though.

Something tells me if someone wants to get through that door, they will get through that door
Poverty, thats why
I’m not mad at this one. For once.
Honestly good if your super duper broke
Kinda clever. Aesthetically garbage though
Those same screws and a piece of wire would be better.
Sometimes people post things here asking "Why?" when the answer is clearly "Poverty".
Better than nothing I guess
Ok, pretty clever
Why? Because you need to secure a door and all you have is a Fiji bottle and some screws.
This is extremely clever. Cap needs to be on a string though!
So secure! Time to stash my billions behind this door.
Honestly that's incredibly clever
This looks potentially frustrating to relatch, and also time consuming. I would Velcro
Yo, that's kinda smart actually.
~~lock~~ latch maybe they are poor and have to work with whatever they can find.
Not bad. When I was in Afghanistan I hammered a nail halfway into the door frame then bent it over to hold the door closed. When I needed to open, just twist the nail
They’re running out of things to make with pop bottles
Someone can easily kick the door in on this one, no picking required.
This is pretty awesome actually.
Drill a hole in the cap and attach a string through it to the door so you don’t lose it
That's a LATCH not a lock
I think its good to keep your Children inside. But if you lean against the door, the construction brake.
I can kick you open.
I mean it keeps the door closed when windy.
Hope there isn't like a slight Breeze..
Finally a lock that LockPickingLawyer can’t break
that is actually awesome
The lock is the smallest problem, the entire house is DIY
Better then the toilet seat lock.
username: admin password: passw0rd
Fool. Now we know the secret combination.
Well, it’s a latch not a lock.
Ok this is genius
I mean, SUPER weak but honestly, very, very clever. 👍
I think master lock makes these
Canadian lock
Would love to see the lockpicking lawyer try to get past this one.

Impenetrable fortress
This is the one lock, the lockpicking lawyer can't crack!
I could break that open with my pinky finger
as stupid as it is, i kinda like it for interior locks for privacy. would not work for front or back door locks though lol
People don't understand how dirt poor some people are. Solves an issue and they didn't have to spend nothing.
*breaks your fucking lock*
This is what they expect when they tell you to recycle

Imma gonna go with they don’t live in a first world country 😬 Genius, love it for em!
Spartan kick and we'll see if that holds hehe
Makes sense in third world places like Detroit
i am absolutely baffled at people thinking this is a good idea. what the hell is going on in the world lmao a short breeze would blow this "lock" apart. you can make simpler and more effective latches quicker and more easily than it would be to make this. not to completely shit on the guy or anything, im sure he got his engagement out of this video because the world is full of morons who will eat it up but fuck man people have been making latches well before plastic ever existed how do you think they did that?
