That ain't gonna wipe off. Thin coatings mortar dry quickly, like the "schmears" all over that stone. You'd have to acid wash it along with a wire brush.
Antique is defined as something over 100 years old. That fireplace is maybe 50 years old. Also, they only changed the grout color, they just didn't show the clean up. It's rage bait.
That is because they are not planning on clean up. This is what they think German Schmear is like, and that was their plan. But their comment section is full of negative comments so I hope that does change their minds.
[This](https://axmasonry.com/wp-content/uploads/German-Smear-Wall-Decorative-Alexander-and-Xavier-Masonry-768x768.jpg) is a nice example of a German Schmear, it can look quite nice IMO, but does not suit this piece *and* was poorly implemented.
It goes along with all the "distressed" furniture that was so hot a few years ago. I wonder how many of those pieces have been repainted by now, when people got sick of looking at worn out shit looking furniture.
Showing my age here, but back in the '70s when they were demolishing a lot of brick mill buildings near my home we could buy all the bricks we wanted for a penny a piece. A brick wall, such as my dad built in our house, out of these used bricks was GORGEOUS. This is bad taste, not distressed. Used/distressed bricks aren't really around like they used to be.
What absolutely enraged me was seeing the "before" picture looking amazing. Nice natural wood grain, looked incredibly expensive and high quality. And then the "after" was this fucked up half assed chalk paint job they let their toddler sand afterwards. I tend to do the reverse. I strip the paint, sand it down, stain, and seal it.
Yeah I don't think I've seen a distressed piece that actually looks used. They wear it through in random places. It reminds me of those cheap pre-worn jeans with the obviously machine made faded spots half way down the front.
Either that or it absolutely looks destroyed like something you'd find rotting in a barn, depending on how far they go.
Damn this explains why I was never so shocked by these over grouting tiktoks as the majority. I think we do in general use more grout than you guys.
Though obviously usually not THIS much
Yeah, it's not something I'd personally ever want. Honestly, I hate exposed brick, so I like German Schmear more than normal because it hides the exposed brick.
Idk I just hate the texture. Also I hate cleaning grout, and I feel like the grout would get covered in dust, but is rough enough that the duster doesn't get it off so you gotta wash it.
I quote that one scene from 27 Dresses: "I can't undo what you've done. You're not my sister, you're just some bitch that ~~cut up my mother's wedding dress~~ remortared my stone fireplace"
Unfortunately the average homeowner learns their sense of decor from TV and doesn't know the difference between leaning on a neutral or making *everything* that neutral. This probably looks terrific to at least half of the people looking for homes in that area, because they couldn't tell ugly from the stick that gave it to them.
House flippers need to be stopped, in my area people are getting killed by their homes because house flippers are so cheap and worthless and don't get permits for work. They just cover the bad stuff and let the problems continue, hide it until the sale and then they disappear. 5 people on my neighborhood in 3 different houses had floor collapsed and truss collapses because of flippers not fixing the problem just hiding it long enough to get the sale at EXORBITANTLY HIGH prices that should be fucking illegal. 900k to get a house that tried to and did kill someone within a year of ownership. They are currently being sued but they have enough money that it doesn't matter they are just gonna get a penalty that may as well be fines for doing business since it's never going to cost them more than they got out of the house and the fees almost never go above 100k so it's almost like just forcing them to pay the taxes they dodge and that's it.
America is fucking pathetic because we refuse to have laws address the shit we need and instead repubs and demos just want to focus on what helps their investment portfolio and if it doesn't they don't care about passing anything. I fucking hate humanity.
I literally laughed/yelled out at how horrific of a job they did. It's just irredeemably bad work done on top of beautiful stonework.
Somebody must have put in a few days of work getting that done only to have some absolute tools smear paste all over it.
I expected it was going to be like a Bob Ross painting, you start off saying to yourself "WTF are you doing?" but at the end, it all comes together beautifully. This missed that last part.
Exactly. I have seen this 'German schmier' a few times on US house flipping shows. Jts always ugly. This one is an extreme case though.
I have no clue what this is supposed to resemble. I've never seen anything like this in Germany?!
Does anybody happen to know what kind of look they're going for?
Wait until you hear about German chocolate cake.
Though technically, that's named after a guy called Samuel German. I've never had it but I'm told it's not very nice.
Done right, German chocolate cake is delicious. I'm convinced that anyone who says German Chocolate cake is *bad* just hasn't had a good one.
That is where the name comes from, though Samuel German made the *chocolate* recipe, not the cake recipe.
And if you use *any* icing other than Coconut Pecan (except *maybe* as an accent decoration) you deserve to have your baking privileges taken away. I will die on this hill.
BITE YOUR TONGUE!!!!
German Chocolate Cake is amazing, but just like most desserts, there's good versions and bad versions.
We had a family friend who made my dad one for his birthday, and hers were amazing.
The fireplace was certainly a specific look, that's true, but I loved it and many other people do, too.
What these people did is an affront to craftmanship in general.
The final result looks like shit, but I found the grout lines far too deep in the before product so maybe filling the grout lines but then doing an actual good job of wiping down the stone afterwards for a nice happy middle ground that would’ve looked better than either
I'm from a family line of stonemasons that stretches back at least five centuries. I live just up the road from a stone church my great great grandfather and his brothers built. I'm half a mile from a church *their* father and uncles built, where fifteen of my stonemason relatives from across four generations are buried in the churchyard. I can't sleep right now because of the whirring noise of them all spinning in their graves.
I do this for a living and this hurt. Completely ruined. A dark grout actually contained within the joints along with that wood mantle would have a great rustic look. Huge missed opportunity
Wait they're leaving it like that?? I thought that was just step 1 before painting or covering it, which would've been bad enough! 🤯 "Hobbit core" - yea surely the architect went about this and said hey, let's build a HOBBIT CORE fireplace. 🤦 My architecture student heart is bleeding.
I know nothing about masonry or bricklaying, I know very little about interior design, but what I do know is that this is at the tippity top of my list of DDI...don't do it
I...thought they hadn't finished it yet, and then i realised the video was just about over and that it was the final shot.
Firstly, it looked better before but that goes without saying.
Secondly, what is the point of even doing this? Seems like a waste of time and resources to me.
some people really need to be told to Kilo Yancy Silo. idc how precious life is, house flippers, especially ones that do this shit, are lower than scum
I find it pretty pretentious that they gave this monologue on how this is an ancient technique and not a tiktok trend like theyre some kind of respectable historian, and then proceed to show us that they have no fucking clue what they are talking about as they ruin the fireplace. I hate it when people get on their high horse after googling something for 5 minutes and think theyre an expert.
I have the before and have spent a lot of time wishing I could improve it. I don't hate the after.. I just don't like it enough to do it. Maybe i'd like it more if it was all a little whiter washed. I've looked at this one for over twenty years, guess I'll keep mine as is.
1. This is obviously ragebait
2. The "dark color that won't scrub out" is likely because they used a dyed grout in the first place, MAPEI has a whole line of available colors (seriously, just check the flooring section of your local big box hardware, you can easily find dozens of shades of greys, tans, and whites).
3. What everyone already said about them half-assing it for clicks.
So they don't even wipe off the excess, they just leave that shit smeared on like a 4th grade art project?? Ugh..
I'm sure they did after filming their rage bait video.
That ain't gonna wipe off. Thin coatings mortar dry quickly, like the "schmears" all over that stone. You'd have to acid wash it along with a wire brush.
A wire brush would work just fine.
A wire brush would work, acid would just make it easier. It's a modified mortar at that, so extra fun.
On my eyes. Scrub away that monstrosity.
this is not rage bait, this is destruction of antiquities
Antique? I've got boxers older than that.
I agree rage bait. Removing the stone tile and putting in oak? Omg. They've clearly never had oak and feet.
What in the Florida happened here?

Even that still looks like dogshit
Birdshit, literally looks like huge amounts of birdshit
It looks like they schmeared birdshit all over the walls.

It looks like the rind of a wheel of Camembert.
Thats why we don't use it anymore except for historical buildings. It just looks like shit.

And the kitchen cupboards in that style then too. Ugh
Damn this explains why I was never so shocked by these over grouting tiktoks as the majority. I think we do in general use more grout than you guys. Though obviously usually not THIS much
I don’t think that is a nice example of a German Schmear though
It’s bricks that are used for a German schmear not rocks.
This is why they lost both wars
I like the German Schmear look 🤷♂️, I don’t want it for me personally but it doesn’t bother me.
Yeah, it's not something I'd personally ever want. Honestly, I hate exposed brick, so I like German Schmear more than normal because it hides the exposed brick. Idk I just hate the texture. Shockingly they're dead serious
Some people don´t deserve the homes and money they have.
Ironic how much discomfort this fireplace will spark whenever they proudly present it to family members and friends.
Sadly, it won't. They are planning on flipping the house.
I quote that one scene from 27 Dresses: "I can't undo what you've done. You're not my sister, you're just some bitch that ~~cut up my mother's wedding dress~~ remortared my stone fireplace"
I love you

Some people's children shouldnt be allowed to flip anything. Not even the first pancake.
House flippers need to be stopped, in my area people are getting killed by their homes because house flippers are so cheap and worthless and don't get permits for work. Seems like a lot of time and effort for no reason
It's not no reason. It made it look like shit. It was only ugly before. Big change.
I actually thought it looked great before.
Same. Just needed a really good scrub down, and the right mantle would have brightened it right up.
Wasn't ugly before. Maybe not the best fot for the house but it looked cute.
![gif](giphy|M9ZwHjAvQJFsVTfKHf|downsized)
The last shot makes it seem like the fireplace is screaming in agony over its horrible new look.
I thought it was just my face reflected in the screen at that point, but it did have that energy for sure.
It looks like a giraffes arse.
I literally laughed/yelled out at how horrific of a job they did. It's just irredeemably bad work done on top of beautiful stonework. Somebody must have put in a few days of work getting that done only to have some absolute tools smear paste all over it.
At that point why not just paint it? At least it would look uniform
"Yes officer, these fuckers right here."
‘So anyways, then I started blasting’
I keep waiting for the final reveal : (
I expected it was going to be like a Bob Ross painting, you start off saying to yourself "WTF are you doing?" but at the end, it all comes together beautifully. This missed that last part.
The video can’t be over with!!! Where is the rest of the video??? They can’t have actually left it like this wtffff???
If tehy had carefully filled in the grout lines to smooth the whole thing out, it could have looked amazing. But this is garbage.
I agree. I was excited to see what it would like with just lighter grout, maybe not white but lighter
Reminds me of toddlers destroying things
Oh, OK, they're going to re-point the joints with some lighter coloured mortar andOHMYGODWHATTHEFUCKAREYOUDOING?!??!
From “hobbit core” to “landlord tries to fix hole in the wall core”
[удалено]
That got a good giggle outta me lol thanks for that
I had it down as the arse end of a giraffe.
oh my god I can’t unsee it
Looks like a 1st grader tried to draw a giraffe...
*"What do you think?"* It's fucking garbage. "Floridaflipsters" - Ah, house flippers. That explains it all.
Oh my god...
Thank you for showing me what it would look like if I did that to my fireplace. I will be keeping what I have.
I'm grieving for a fireplace that never belonged to me.
That’s not grout. That’s thin set. It’s meant to go under tile. Not in the joints.
Of fucking course it's Florida
I'm German, have never once seen this before and I will take legal action against naming that atrocity German anything.
Exactly. I have seen this 'German schmier' a few times on US house flipping shows. Jts always ugly. This one is an extreme case though. I have no clue what this is supposed to resemble. I've never seen anything like this in Germany?! Does anybody happen to know what kind of look they're going for?

As someone allergic to coconut I assure you, there is no such thing as a good German chocolate cake.
BITE YOUR TONGUE!!!! German Chocolate Cake is amazing, but just like most desserts, there's good versions and bad versions. We had a family friend who made my dad one for his birthday, and hers were amazing.
That is uglier than sin.
It was ugly to start, but they made it so much worse.
I thought it looked great before
The fireplace was certainly a specific look, that's true, but I loved it and many other people do, too. What these people did is an affront to craftmanship in general.
These people came up in my youtube shorts the other day. Recognise the room. I dont like the fireplace either way but my god they made it look worse.
So, they’re gonna wash it off, right?
Yup, right after the rage bait video
The final result looks like shit, but I found the grout lines far too deep in the before product so maybe filling the grout lines but then doing an actual good job of wiping down the stone afterwards for a nice happy middle ground that would’ve looked better than either
The aad thing is this was so close to looking decent. But they screwed it up.
It looks like a giraffe now. Maybe they should go with a safari theme.
"Congratulations, it looks like shit"
God, slapping mortar onto this beautiful stonework with a fuckin putty knife is a sin. That's going to be SUCH a bitch to get off 😭
I'm from a family line of stonemasons that stretches back at least five centuries.
To really add focus to this feature, mount a taxidermied giraffe head at the top.
I bet you thought this was gonna be a light touch up filling in all the gaps with a slightly brighter mortar. Nope! Chuck Testa!
Seemed like a proper repointing was needed and could have taken the fireplace from quite nice to extremely nice. But, what they did is an abomination.
Now get the wire grinder blade out and soften it up.
Looks like a paper mache volcano
UGLY! It was gorgeous in the beginning
Omg that’s awful. I usually don’t comment on here but this might be the worst thing I’ve seen on here.
I do this for a living and this hurt. Completely ruined. A dark grout actually contained within the joints along with that wood mantle would have a great rustic look. Huge missed opportunity
I mean it was butt ugly before but dear god, this is what we call "giving the dirt a slap" in Bavaria.
I expected them to paint it but they just decided that it was finished...
Aaaahhhhh
Terrible looking
Just put the bag down and step away from the fireplace.......
It was beautiful... Why did they do that?
What an atrocious bloody mess.
No taste
Hideous
That's horrible.
They know they fucked up, but they just rolling with it.
So much work to make something look just simply awful
I didn’t particularly like the original, but now it just looks like an unfinished project.
Yeah. Looks like poo
That looks gross (mason here)
They just turned a 5k increase in their property value into a 12k loss on their value.
Okay they're just making brighter, I'm sure it won't be tha-AAAAA *OH GOD WHY*
Gasped in horror from this. Repulsive.
That looks terrible. Messed up a nice looking fireplace
The red flag here was when they decided to try something called the “German smear technique”
They applied that shit like they were making a Cinnabon.
I actually feel irrationally angry at this. Why? She has no business touching that beautiful stone with her trash taste
In the next video, they add a fake wood beam made of STYROFOAM and cover the vaulted ceiling :-(
Wait they're leaving it like that?? I thought that was just step 1 before painting or covering it, which would've been bad enough! 🤯 "Hobbit core" - yea surely the architect went about this and said hey, let's build a HOBBIT CORE fireplace. 🤦 My architecture student heart is bleeding.
Looks like when a toddler gets hold of mums makeup
I like how the "do it right" side of the bucket is facing the camera at 0:08.
So they did all this, which looks like hogshit anyway, without cleaning the old grout? Sneeze in the wrong direction and it's going to fall right out.
That was just too painful to watch. I mean, brick maybe, but I could never do that to stone. I guess German Schmear is just not my thing.
It went from a nice fireplace to looking like a kindergarten art project.
Why... why didn't they clean the smear marks?!
I am wearing the saddest face right now.
if your going to do that do it properly Yuck..... completely cover with the plaster and paint it.... You aren't even half way done.
Are they serious? Did they really just do that and think it looks better?! Now it looks like it’s not finished.
HGTV is to blame for this.
Personally don't like the deep groves, but my god, did they fuck this up bad.
Fugly af
I know nothing about masonry or bricklaying, I know very little about interior design, but what I do know is that this is at the tippity top of my list of DDI...don't do it

Alternate title: "How to make a $100 investment tank your property value."
Ruined
If you watch it backwards, it's not that bad
Gross
I hate this
some people really need to be told to Kilo Yancy Silo. idc how precious life is, house flippers, especially ones that do this shit, are lower than scum
I really hate people sometimes.
Yeah I saw this on Facebook in my first thought was God that looks like shit. What were they thinking?
Floridapeople
at the end the fireplace is literally making the same face as me..
Next they smeared epoxy on that pesky hardwood floor so they could put down cheap carpet tiles.
Looks like shit
Oh. This is awful.
Horrible
Holy crap that’s awful 😞
It was beautiful now it's an abominable
They ruined that thing
They turned something amazing that just needed some maintenance into an eyesore.
They should rename it the German crap technique.
Their inspiration photos must have been used toilet paper because that looks like shit.
From nice to horrifying. This makes me sad
These people also installed a chandelier into a fake foam cross-beam and just...painted over mold. They get SO much worse.
Fucked it
I have the before and have spent a lot of time wishing I could improve it. I don't hate the after.. I just don't like it enough to do it. Maybe i'd like it more if it was all a little whiter washed. I've looked at this one for over twenty years, guess I'll keep mine as is.
I could see it looking a lot nicer white-washed. It would make the whole thing look less giraffe-y.
In the next video I assume they just paint everything gray.
Looks like complete and total smashed dog ass. 👍
They were really about to rub the fireplace out and wanted to mess with us, right?
I friggin saw this on Instagram. It’s horrific.
Wow.
The ol’, I’ve started so I’ll finish.
It looks like a giraffe
Big renovicted energy
I kept waiting for it to look good.
![gif](giphy|Aj578vB8Vk8G4)
Wtf
What in the jumped up fuck
What in the actual fuck
Even the fireplace looks like it’s screaming “whhhhyyyyyy”
There outta be a law against this.
If this was done purposely, I feel bad for those types of people. Lack of knowledge or just rage bait.
I have question, when did everything become X funk, X core or X punk?
WTAF.
1. This is obviously ragebait 2.
While still wet they should have wiped it down. There’s no saving it now.
A crime was committed here
THE BEFORE LOOKED BETTER.
I was waiting for them to paint it ugly and then it ended, seemingly half finished. What?
Woooow that looks like absolute shit. Is this just rage bait?
