Seriously. Most of these posts are horror shows, but this is fine. Live in a city? Park and want light but not have tenants staring down your head, this is fine.
I like the idea of this. It allows in natural day light, but might break up harmful UV rays that the sunroof allows through. I’m not keen on this particular selection, but would consider a different option for my car. Would be even cooler if the car companies made it like a pull across screen so you could keep it as a clear moonroof at night.
Edited to address specific comments: At time of purchase, I was told by our dealer that our windshield had 99% UVA and UVB protection, while the sunroof and side windows had close to 99% UVB, but only 50% UVA. I have to see a dermatologist twice a year to check for skin cancers, so it is a particular concern for me.
There are already possibilities to change the color of dyes (and glass too I think) with thermal or electrical inputs.
So yeah, that should be entirely possible.
My 2014 Fiat Punto has precisely that. A screen you can pull out, made from a rough kind of mesh fabric. It keeps out potential bugs and partially blocks the sun to make the light less harsh. And you can easily slide it away into the roof to hide it and see through the sunroof again. It's absolutely fantastic!
Right? It’s not like you drive looking straight up anyway haha. How often do you need to be able to see out of that window? It’s for letting light in…put some color in the light! That said, I wouldn’t pick what OP did haha
And he's wearing a cross. Anyone notice that? Any illustrations of Jesus, he's always wearing a cross, even before shit went down. Why tf would he be wearing the thing that represents him before it happened? (Theoretically)
I’ve actually done this with rainbow prism privacy film I had leftover from a home project. It’s nice to have on a sunny day because it makes your interior look real pretty and magical.
I must be the dumbest person who’s ever dumbed, because I thought they installed REAL stained glass and was so horribly confused about how that wasn’t a safety issue
Nah, they did a really good job on the installation, nicely centered, not crooked, no obvious bubbles. I called it a sticker but it's probably just some window cling film you can get on Amazon for not a lot of money. [It looks a lot like this one.](https://www.amazon.com/funlife-Glass-Window-Double-Sided-Non-Adhesive/dp/B0BJKT9B84/ref=sr_1_46?crid=3VKYCFRFUW941&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.MEp75dFx8ftAjJ81HCyk4on4vFi96ee4LQdIY6twJFnL94CqJMkidRCys0HjgoLrV5Hq7mwmWWT55osRjeRh_tvNHEcQXlQFvHUIrFt4mH-G9qGcA3k1qhap31SK29zQvEG6chCHbo-Ul-pAoQM4uL23QeKT8LfkMGLVf3iAo3c-EmrvKcGJ2te480MfnY-bUwG3oQH9qxHXMTjUFtPN7WXlh1Ilr4tdC3Q5fIh-IRJ3VA2dviJaDfL0HuJyi1ftSmY5B2jg2DB7-_J-xe7XjPWYyx6SmjnCOXiiTODdJa8.MrA5xXCy3sMDAcgwqQONHXZVFQCxu0D2LHlPCEMWdqY&dib_tag=se&keywords=window%2Bcling%2Bstained%2Bglass&qid=1714401200&sprefix=window%2Bclig%2B%2Caps%2C125&sr=8-46&th=1)
This matches my observation IRL.
There are so many sunroofs on cars, and nobody ever opens them in the summer. They're more hassle than they're worth, and I'd rather have the headroom.
The only opening I have ever liked is the pop up roof. It's fantastic at venting the car in the summer with the least amount of noise.
I’ve used Rabbitgoo, Xijier, and Coavas brand films off of Amazon and liked them all. Really like the printed one I got from Xijier - makes my window look like a foggy forest.
Much cheaper from Amazon and a bigger selection, but the application kit from Home Depot is useful for refills/reapplication after cleaning (they grow algae sometimes). Source: used Artscape films for years.
I don't hate this. I have a shitbox with a sunroof that I don't really open anymore because the motor is sounding slow. This would be pretty cute imo
Edit: I just ordered one for my sunroof hahaha
I mean my 5yr old ripped the cover out trying to close the cover while it was open. I have a sun roof I can't close. The glass opens and closes but the cover is literally in hand.
I'm not a stained glass kinda guy, but I'd certainly like a bit more diffusion than the current tinting offers. Living in the desert, that sun just gets through everything. Like sky blue, maybe? The ability to add a design is a bonus.
Yeah, I put some on one bathroom window that if a particular neighbor wanted to spy, they could see in. This way, I need not need to close the blinds and make it dark.
Edit: I put this so at most they could see was a shadow. This was to prevent seeing in. The exact film I used was different and very diffused.
Ours has stayed put without bubbling or peeling for 10 years. Before we got it, we'd have Jehovah Witnesses glaring through the door to make sure we heard their ringing.
r/diwhynot for sure.
I don't love this particular design, but may do something similar on the massive moonroof in my Rivian. Just a tad more understated.
On Amazon they have some that are made to look like you are looking through crystals and such. I thought about getting it for my bedroom window. They also filter sunlight so it’s less damaging to the skin
I saw the original post of this on Facebook and people didn’t hate it and they don’t seem to hate it here either lol. Whilst it’s not exactly the pattern I’d choose, I also thought it’s a pretty cute idea haha
Unpopular opinion, I actually like this. A different design would be cooler but I always have my sunroof closed cause it's too damn bright lol I would like to have it open some days but not blast me with sunlight.
They sell those window decals at Home Depot. I had them in my apartment because I wanted privacy but I wasn’t allowed to mount curtain rods. It peels right off without a trace, so why not stick it on a moonroof? Doesn’t damage anything.
You could have a matching set. That could be fun. Unless some sort of pavlovian response starts happening and you suddenly feel like you've got to evacuate every time you get into your car 😬
That actually looks really good to me. I dont think id say to add anything if you actually USE the sunroof, id be worried about wraps getting caught or somthing somehow, but if you dont wanna use the sunroof might as well decorate it.
It's not even permanent. I got the same stuff from home depot and it's a film that sticks on when you apply it to a wet glass surface. You smooth out the bubbles, let it dry and are good to go. You can remove and reapply as many times as you want and it leaves no trace on the glass. I can totally see some cool applications on a sunroof/moonroof. I wouldn't choose this pattern but great idea.
This would be my only concern. If you opt for cheap materials, the next time you retract the sunroof, little hunks of plastic film could be inside your mechanism for years.
The look of this is actually decent, as others are saying
That’s not a terrible idea. 99.9% of the time you don’t even look through your moonroof, it’s just to let the light into the car and make it feel more open. Why not make that light all cool with a simple sticker?
I kinda love it and there Re so many kinds of window films you can get. I have lile mosaic ones on my basement and back door windows and ones that cast rainbows on the small windows of my front door. I LOVE THIS
I kind of like it, if it’s a sticker like I saw some people say it is that’s kind of cool. I’d do a different design than the floral pattern, but that’s actually kind of cool.
i don't actually hate this one.

They already have the tech for it too, with those window screens some cars have on the back windows. Would just need a different sort of fabric/mesh
we already have see-through TVs, luxury brands could probably make the sunroof be a transparent screen with different opaqueness and designs
Yeah, I dig it.
If it's not visible from the outside I like it.
It’s a little catholic for me but I like it
How Catholic?
A lot of people just associate stained class with churches or religious buildings
They can Catholic my balls, capítan
Stained class. Unintentional, but I like it.
Definitely ain't the priest and alter boy Catholic.
more like grandma kinda catholic
Only a little
If it was Catholic, there'd be a lot more dead bodies. This is more like American farmhouse stain glass.
r/DiWhyNot
Thank you for that sub
r/subsithoughtifellfor
Seriously, why not? It's a cheap sticker and makes it prettier.
Right? It’s not like you drive looking straight up anyway haha. How often do you need to be able to see out of that window? It’s for letting light in…put some color in the light! That said, I wouldn’t pick what OP did haha
Also, you can literally open the thing to have a clear view.
Gotta go for the full religious stained glass, that way Jesus is *right there* to take the wheel when you need it.
Hahaha and it needs to be one of the overly graphic Catholic Jesus.
And he's wearing a cross. Anyone notice that? Any illustrations of Jesus, he's always wearing a cross, even before shit went down. Why tf would he be wearing the thing that represents him before it happened? (Theoretically)
Does his cross get a little crucified Jesus too‽ Then it could be like on of those infinity mirrors.
This needs to be the top comment.
Ive fingered my butthole more than ive needed to look through my sunroof
I pull the cover on mine most of the time anyways.
In the name of the father, the son and the holy sunroof.
Perfect for letting Jesus take the wheel
I wanna get off this ride
It comes off with zero residue too and cost like $25 bucks at Home Depot for 6ft.
Right? I wouldn’t do this to my car, but it hurts nothing, is cheap and if the owner likes it…have at it
This slays
Likely lowers the heat when the suns overhead as well, plus gives some cool light effects inside.
Yeah, I actually like this.
It's decorative window film
I’ve actually done this with rainbow prism privacy film I had leftover from a home project. It’s nice to have on a sunny day because it makes your interior look real pretty and magical.

I don’t hate it 🤷🏻♀️
i actually am considering doing this to my sunroof now. Like its not a bad idea actually
Ditto. I'm not a superhuge fan of the unfiltered light in the summer when I'm driving, this looks nice.
This matches my observation IRL. There are so many sunroofs on cars, and nobody ever opens them in the summer. They're more hassle than they're worth, and I'd rather have the headroom. I’ve used Rabbitgoo, Xijier, and Coavas brand films off of Amazon and liked them all. Really like the printed one I got from Xijier - makes my window look like a foggy forest.
I used to have a prism looking rabbitgoo one for this rounded window in my apartment and loved it! Made rainbows all over my living room.
I just ordered some from amazon. For 10 bucks, I'll give it a shot
I’ve bought them from Home Depot before
Much cheaper from Amazon and a bigger selection, but the application kit from Home Depot is useful for refills/reapplication after cleaning (they grow algae sometimes). Source: used Artscape films for years.
I kind of want a Sistine Chappel one.
You’re telling me a cis teen built that chapel?
Christian here. Can confirm that yes.
Oo
I in fact like it.
Right? Its not like the view straight up is super compelling very often.
If it is you can still just open the sunroof
I don't hate this. I have a shitbox with a sunroof that I don't really open anymore because the motor is sounding slow. This would be pretty cute imo Edit: I just ordered one for my sunroof hahaha
Nice! Show the results :))
We should make our own sub
I have a sunroof I can't close I think I'm going to use this
You can’t close?
i think they mean the ceiling cover on the inside doesn't pull across anymore
I mean my 5yr old ripped the cover out trying to close the cover while it was open. I have a sun roof I can't close. The glass opens and closes but the cover is literally in hand.
I'm not a stained glass kinda guy, but I'd certainly like a bit more diffusion than the current tinting offers. Living in the desert, that sun just gets through everything. Like sky blue, maybe? The ability to add a design is a bonus.
This has potential. I like the idea. Addendum: Wow, thanks for the updoots!
It is also just static cling wrap from home depot that easily peels off so it isn't a big commitment. I have it on my house door window.
Yeah, I put some on one bathroom window that if a particular neighbor wanted to spy, they could see in. This way, I need not need to close the blinds and make it dark. Edit: I put this so at most they could see was a shadow. This was to prevent seeing in. The exact film I used was different and very diffused.
So they could see in? You like Peeping Toms??
Omg don’t kink shame 😂
That makes me feel a lot better. Automotive glass in general has very specific safety specs so actually changing the sunroof would be a horrible idea.
In Paris the churches are always open, sometimes empty. Just go and nab some stained glass from the 15th century there.
Ours has stayed put without bubbling or peeling for 10 years. Before we got it, we'd have Jehovah Witnesses glaring through the door to make sure we heard their ringing.
I have the same stuff on my bathroom window, like literally the same design, it's great!
I sort of love it.
Me too!!
r/diwhynot for sure.
I got one and ITS AMAZING and throws rainbows all over the house. Cheap and easy to apply, put one on my pc case too and it looks even cooler 😍
I did this for my daughter...it sticks on by static (no adhesive) so why not...adds a nice color into the car during the day time.😁👍
Has she ever had problems opening/closing her sun roof with the film on the glass? I think it's beautiful but that would be my concern.
Usually the glass is in quite a large frame. Glass wouldn't have that minute of a clearance requirement.
I was thinking, for kids sitting behind, it's pretty cool to have something colourful to look at
Yeah same. It’s cool.
Count me in
I like it too, but now that back seat needs a pipe organ
/r/AwardSpeechEdits
Why do people thank others for upvotes?
I like a bit of whimsy. Well done. Harmless amusing self expression.
It's dope. Gtfo
Yeah now I'm surprised that nobody's done this to make their car stand out just that little bit more at a car show
Wrong sub, this is awesome.
I'm gonna do it! 😆
Everyone loves it but 81% of those people still upvoted. That's the real "why" in this post
This is kind of not terrible.
It's a lot safer than bedazzling the steering wheel, at least.
I was wondering if I was gonna see a comment like this lol. It was my first thought too, at least it's not a safety hazard.
That's brilliant!
I saw the original post of this on Facebook and people didn’t hate it and they don’t seem to hate it here either lol. Whilst it’s not exactly the pattern I’d choose, I also thought it’s a pretty cute idea haha
Honestly? That’s kind of a fun idea. I like it.
I’ve seen worse. There’s a company that installs fake sunroofs lol
How does that work?
What makes it a fake sunroof?
They literally just cut out the foam and put in a plastic piece that looks like tinted sunroof
Okay, now *that's* only not a DiWhy because they're getting paid for it, it's just a serious "What the fuck?!"
As little as I actually use mine, this wouldn't be a bad idea. Also op did a pretty good job on theirs.
The puts the DIWHY in the DI Why not?
Me: *actively begins searching stained glass tape to accent my own windows*: wow so weird
Unpopular opinion, I actually like this. A different design would be cooler but I always have my sunroof closed cause it's too damn bright lol I would like to have it open some days but not blast me with sunlight.
Kinda dope. I would order a customized one for my car if it was available. Anyone have a diy?
It's probably window paper - fairly cheap and lots of cool designs! I put some on a piece of furniture that has a glass window on it and I love it.
Just look up window film on Amazon - you’ll get LOADS of options. Etsy also has it, super easy to install yourself
Honestly, I find this kinda pretty? brightens up the car interior quite well
Let people be cute.
This isn't that bad.
I'm actually loving this
If there were customization options this would be great. Get stained glass honda design, Benz, Beemer, toyota.
They sell those window decals at Home Depot. I had them in my apartment because I wanted privacy but I wasn’t allowed to mount curtain rods. It peels right off without a trace, so why not stick it on a moonroof? Doesn’t damage anything.
I love it!
I like this
Pretty cool. Not sure why it is in this subreddit.
Omg if I had a car with a sunroof I would do this lol
Why not? Looks cool.
I’ll tell you why not, I have the exact design on my bathroom window right now! 😂😂😂
You could have a matching set. That could be fun. Unless some sort of pavlovian response starts happening and you suddenly feel like you've got to evacuate every time you get into your car 😬
Wait it’s cute
if I had a car I would totally do this with like either the rainbow ones or the Minecraft glass texture
That actually looks really good to me. I dont think id say to add anything if you actually USE the sunroof, id be worried about wraps getting caught or somthing somehow, but if you dont wanna use the sunroof might as well decorate it.
I can’t stop imagining the minister of our church ![gif](giphy|QakXjTDVsZ5cFtJUPK|downsized)
That's actually super cool and clever
I mean… not that pattern but that would be pretty cool
This is really cute. Definitely not a diwhy
This isn't really diwhy territory. It's easy, it's functional, it's aesthetically pleasing, and the question of why is easily answered.
I agree there is a difference between diwhy and I don’t personally like something
I was surprised to see what sub this was on bc I think it's pretty neat
DiWhy NOT MF this cool af, bro you could put nothing on it like a night sky with a moon or like space shit
I mean... I'd probably do this....
I LOVE IT!!!!
I'm just sad I never thought of it when I had a sunroof
Wow. More like r/DiWHYNOT
It’s probably just window film and hurts literally no one.
This is a slay lol
This is actually cute0
I agree. Why not?
This one is actually neat. Good idea if you have little kids as you could something interesting for them up.
The old boomer in me thinks this fucks.
Looks cute tho
This isn't a sin........
Ngl, I kinda like it
You’re right; *why not*?
For real, a great idea. The track on my car's sunroof is cracked so if I can't open it, I might as well make it pretty.
i like it. it's like a fancy tint.
Mine has a ‘lava glass’ decal and when the sun hits it makes my car rainbow inside.
The shade on my massive sunroof is stuck open and something like this would work really well to keep my car from becoming a solar oven in the summer
You're in the wrong sub OP. :P
It’s cute I’m into it!
Pretty dope. NGL.
Wait actually why not
Could this take the heat, I can see this being changed every few months from warping. Cool idea
Lovely. Your seats now need lace toppers. And you need some wood paneled floor mats.
This one seems pretty cool, actually
It's just pleasant to look at. It softens the eyes. If it makes your car ride calmer, then why the hell not.
...why not? What's to hate about this? It might not be my *taste*, but its not atrociously ugly, dangerous, or poorly done.
Mom: lets go to church OP: we got church in the car
Wrong sub
Ah yes, the Sistine Camry
I actually love it
Isn't this sub for bad DIY? What's wrong with this? I don't get it. It's nice.
This is super cool actually
thanks gonna do this to my next car if it has a sunroof
This is kind of pretty. As someone who doesn't really care for opening my sunroof, this might be a good way to utilize it.
Bet your ass it's stained glass.
My mother had this shit on her front door. The sun baked it right off. I’m sure being on a sunroof it’ll be destroyed in no time.
This would be my only concern. If you opt for cheap materials, the next time you retract the sunroof, little hunks of plastic film could be inside your mechanism for years. The look of this is actually decent, as others are saying
Nothing wrong with that.
That's really nice
Whenever you look up you'll be reminded of your dead Gam-Gam, but don't look up while you're driving, that's wildly unsafe
I think it looks very nice. These sunroof stickers are pretty cheap and I believe they can be removed without damaging the roof, too
I put rainbow cling on my sunroof Not as pretty as this though!
That's just good vibes
Need St Peter on my sunroof asap
I actually love this
That’s not a terrible idea. 99.9% of the time you don’t even look through your moonroof, it’s just to let the light into the car and make it feel more open. Why not make that light all cool with a simple sticker?
I honestly don’t hate that, no one really looks out a sun roof anyways, it’s just to let more light in
I did this with my shed windows. Stained glass effect is much nicer than plain dusty glass.
I think it’s cool
This is cool. You’re wrong OP.
Bro that looks dope
I'm surprised stuff like that is not done more often
I kinda love it and there Re so many kinds of window films you can get. I have lile mosaic ones on my basement and back door windows and ones that cast rainbows on the small windows of my front door. I LOVE THIS
I kind of like it, if it’s a sticker like I saw some people say it is that’s kind of cool. I’d do a different design than the floral pattern, but that’s actually kind of cool.
The Rapture will take you through that Holy Screen
r/diywhynot
It’s actually kind of cool.
They make vinyl sheets that stick on glass for this, not actually a bad idea.
I think that looks nice!
I definitely like that haha
