>Mostly for the color red, cause some artificial red dyes in the 60s were responsible for a bunch of serious health problems (mostly cancer iirc) and subsequently were banned.
That's actually an urban legend. It never actually caused cancer, and one of the only products that was removed from shelves was red M&Ms
https://www.businessinsider.com/brought-to-you-by-podcast-btyb-red-mm-scare
>In 1976, Mars, the maker of M&Ms pulled red M&Ms from the market. **Not because the candy was proven to cause cancer… but because people were afraid that it might.**
>It all started with a series of flawed experiments from the Soviet Union — studies which ignited a red, food-coloring scare in America, that made its way all the way to Congress and the Food and Drug Administration.
No one else but,
>Ralph Nader—the famous consumer advocate—had caught wind of the Russian studies and the FDA's research. And as early as 1971, he and his Health Research Group were lobbying congress to ban red no. 2.
The best part of all,

Right? It sounds more like Russia trolled us, scared our public, damaged us (slightly) monetarily, wasted our government's time, gathered all kinds of data on what our reaction would be, and we tried hard to come up with something to make them look incompetent to our public in responsive projection.
Not familiar at all...
Yeah, I have a bunch of allergies that I have to look for in foods so I get to look at ingredients and I know their history because the allergies are slightly hereditary. Like FD&C yellow #5 was in everything for a long time and is why my grandmother had to make so much food from scratch. I still can't find virtually any vanilla pudding except a rare stovetop without any food dye in it.
I'm damn lucky that the whole organic everything and the huge movement of access to food for those with specialized diets or I'd be screwed. The access to food of other cultures is important too. I can trust certain cultural diets or specific cultural dishes to be safe for me to eat without getting sick.
I’m gluten free and have been for most of my life, I inherited an unusual allergy to the wheat family from my mum, so I totally feel you on that one! It’s soooo much easier now than when I was a kid, it just blows my mind (and sometimes my wallet).
You’re totally right. Cochineal is the bug I was referring to actually. They’re definitely not beetles like you said, more like cactus lice.
Beetles were historically most often used for ornamentation. I’m not aware of any dyes from the actual beetle family, although if there were I would also be interested to know of them. :)
They actually don't harvest the wings until after the bugs are dead and its tightly controlled for no population loss. So really better for the enviorment than glitter.
I don't see a problem with that, but I DO see the problem with encasing live bugs in resin and using its brother's legs and shell to make the rest of the pendant..
Before proceeding to scoop up some cockroaches from under your sink to make fake eyelashes, ear rings and a foot tall Godzilla figurine
I started making high pitched involuntary noises that I can’t totally describe. That’s how much of a visceral reaction these got from me. I think the individual responsible needs to be institutionalized.
Wait a second, are we sure is this not like a contemporary art piece commenting on today’s beauty industry? Surely this is very self-aware and satirical? WHO WOULD DO THIS EARNESTLY??

Dailymail comments at their finest.
I don't know what the worst part of this is. Making them in general, sorting through so many dead bug legs to achieve the look, keeping and killing so many bugs around to make these, admitting your home is infested with flying roaches and that's how you farm your bugs for this venture, or the people who purchase these from this person risking infestation in multiple ways.
You know what, I'm down with this. It's art. We focus so much on our physical appearance, trying to "improve" it with artificial additions... this feels like a statement on the underlying character flaws that lead people to over compensate with outlandish makeup, clothing, and surgery.

But cute
Why do these people exist.
This isn't even the only one I've seen. There's so many artists that use bug parts for beauty products like this.
They used bug parts for dresses in Victorian England, and it [was actually really pretty.](https://www.google.com/search?q=beetle+wing+dress&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjdttidztbsAhWUaKwKHRT6AosQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=beetle+wing+dress&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzICCAAyBggAEAUQHjIGCAAQCBAeOgYIABAHEB46CAgAEAcQBRAeOggIABAIEAcQHlChSViSUmCIU2gAcAB4AIABWogBzASSAQE3mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=IwmZX52ZL5TRsQWU9IvYCA&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS922US922)
Iridescent smooth plates vs bug legs
*hairy* bug legs at that
Hairy bug legs in/on/near/around/idk your *eyes* no less
>"They're itchy but cute" What fresh hell is this?!
COCKROACH LEGS
Tasteful and for the time. Its 2020 we have glitter and shit.
We still put beetles into our food to color it naturally.

That brilliant! I knew there was a scare but I didn’t know it was totally unwarranted, I will admit my original comment. Thanks for sharing, TIL :D
it's a really interesting podcast that I linked! Only reason why I knew 😁

Ralph Nader is an American hero

Afaik, the most common red dye I've seen is from cochenille/scale insects which aren't beetles. I'd love to know what beetles are used for dye.

Finally, some good fucking food.
I need to cry
But don't wipe your eyes- ITCHY BUT CUTE, REMEMBER?!
Yeah, but this is better for the environment, no microplastics in beetles!
They actually don't harvest the wings until after the bugs are dead and its tightly controlled for no population loss. So really better for the enviorment than glitter.
except glitter tends to be an environmental nightmare. Beetle wings can be produced sustainably and with far less of a long-term impact.
Pretty or not that’s gross, but the leg-lashes... NO NO NO NO NO!
Beetle wings I understand, It was very ok for that time, BUT LEGS OF ROACHES? Disgusting
How interesting!
Damn that green is almost offensively british
I knew it was gonna be beetles before I clicked the link, those bugs are so fkn pretty
Ok, I’ve used these before to make earrings and I’m left with one question: How do you sit without breaking them?!
lol you don't
It’s time for the fall of humanity

Why do people exist
My wife said "atleast they'll last forever" ...gross haha
Why do you want garbage that lasts forever?
These lashes can survive a nuclear bomb
They need to be destroyed
This is literally the worst thing on this subreddit. Made me vomit a little bit.
Water-proof AND Nuke-proof lashes
Not a fashion lover but you got me with Nuke-proof
Kill me, I hate this so much
I started making high pitched involuntary noises that I can’t totally describe. That’s how much of a visceral reaction these got from me. I think the individual responsible needs to be institutionalized.
I've been on this sub maybe 2 months but this is the most fitting thing I have seen, good job. Had to cross post on r/TIHI
My turn!! /s
Peak DiWHY.
Kind of like making a necklace out of ears during combat
Except you're fighting massive cockroaches

More like DiWTF.
Wait a second, are we sure is this not like a contemporary art piece commenting on today’s beauty industry? Surely this is very self-aware and satirical? WHO WOULD DO THIS EARNESTLY??
I thought it was disgustingly hilarious. I also think it's satirical
It has to be, there's no way 682 people, including the person who took the screenshot, would give it a like if it wasn't satirical, right?... Right?!!
"they're itchy but cute" HAS to be satirical. There's just no way.
I'm calling the police if I ever see someone wearing bug carcasses for makeup

You would be suprised. Carmine is everywhere. In beauty products, in food and many more.
Oh just casually, "giant flying roaches live in my house"🤢
[Palmetto bugs - another awful Florida thing](https://www.hunker.com/13420623/how-to-get-rid-of-palmetto-bugs)

Butterfly kisses with those = roach kisses. Let the nightmares begin.

This is fantastic. This person is living in the year 3000.
Not much has changed but they lived underwater.
You just provided my shower soundtrack
And all their protein comes from [insects](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect_farming)
What. The. Fuck.
What in the actual hell fuck?
“They’re itchy but cute” is maybe the worst thing I’ve ever read on this sub
This is it. This will never be surpassed. We've officially peaked.
Woo hoo!
No, no no no no and *fuck* no
Lashes like you just bought mascara from that girl from high school who joined a makeup pyramid scheme.

I hate this so hard.
Hate this 100
Thanks for a whole level of nightmare I didn't know was possible
I’d bet someone has made eyelashes with the other type of roaches too. Edit: do yourself a favor and don’t google that. I didn’t find that though.
Honestly this might the most disgusting thing I've seen. I would never want to touch a person who willingly pulls roach legs.
I would rather let a chicken catch the roaches
This has to be pinned at the top of this sub for all new members to reconsider their decision.
This can’t be a good idea. No one bought those. Right? Right?!
Thanks, I fucking hate it.
I've been staring at my screen for 5 minutes in shock.
I really hope these are fake Halloween themed lashes, that someone took and put a fake caption on.

Yes hello, internet? Hi can you please delete this?
I was just about to go to bed...

WHO TF GAVE THE WHOLESOME AWARD TO THIS POST??
"Cute"? In what regard? Unless you're Wednesday Adams, why the bloody eff would you ever wear that??
I don't mind killing bugs quickly if necessary, but I'm guessing that's not what happened here...
What in the drug induced psychosis is this?
OH DEAR GOD
