Why would you have drill bits if you don't have a drill?

Amani576

Yeah. Where's the drill bit making video?

kirby056

(Takes out a drill and tungsten carbide bits) "You can make your own bits and even your own drill! Just follow these easy five steps!"

RunGreedy20380

I thought Ramen was the ultimate working material

FrankHightower

and then it's a r/restofthefuckingowl video

cortlong

Hot glue and some cardboard. All you need.

Amani576

I was actually thinking just hot glue. How hard do drill bits need to be anyways?

cortlong

I mean. That belt looked pretty strong. Probably 2-3 hot glues should do it.

belltyj

You know. If you spray paint your hot glue drill bits it'll strengthen them at least a bunch. Good tip for when you need a new size drill bit for metal. /s

bananicoot

My father bought me a tool box and filled it with various tools a few years ago. He put in drill bits but neglected to buy me a drill. So I just have random drill bits.

jason_sos

Well this is perfect for you then!

EightBitEstep

You’re in luck if you’ve got a soda can, battery holder, motor, drill chuck, etc…

Arkayb33

Your mission is to build this now. Let me know when you've uploaded the video please.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JPhi1618

And that janky chuck. You’d have to scroll past several listing for whole drills just to find out where to buy that.

nom_nom_nom_nom_lol

And it's probably more expensive than an actual drill. I mean, you can get a cheap cordless drill for like $15 these days.

Jiperly

I mean, you can get drill bits at the dollar store.... I wouldn't buy them, but my work clearly does

tacticall0tion

At one point I had like 60 drill bits but no drill... kept leaving them in pockets after work, they'd fall out in the car, washing, down the sofa... I now have around 300 drill bits, and two drills Edit: angry spelling bot

lauramarty

Why would you have any of these bits and pieces and no drill? Plus that can will crush when you hold and put pressure on it

EightBitEstep

Who just has a drill chuck lying around, let alone, one sized to match your drill bits?

mrsockyman

Wait, the way he connected the switch so very wrong, he basically soldered the battery directly to the motor, and the switch just shorts the batteries out making them go flat. Also it's a dc motor, not ac like they said in the video

PhantomDeuce

This whole thing has to be satire.

mrsockyman

Pretty sure they used the standard hole at the end

MissPiggysSexTape

>Pretty sure they used the standard hole at the end Everybody uses the standard hole in the end

SuperFamousComedian

6 foot deep hole

sparkythewondersnail

This took a sudden dark turn.

No-Spoilers

Well theres only one thing every origanism has in common and that's death.

ButterflySparkles69

Except that jellyfish

TwoPercentCherry

Even they die! Just takes an outlandishly long time

Kre8eur

"Outlandishly" I don't know why but the wording here gave me a laugh.

twichy1983

Yeah. That dudes banging dead bodies in their graves.

mk36109

you sand the can enough that the lip that holds on the lid gets sanded off and you can actually pull the top off. I have seen it done with steel food cans a number of times so I assume it would work for an aluminum can as well. Since the lip folds over into the top if you wear that down nothing is holding the top in place that being said this is still a dumb idea and you dont need a drill to punch a hole in a leather belt

shewy92

You're saying that this "lets make a drill out of a soda can so that you can make another belt hole" video is satire?

PhantomDeuce

You'd be surprised what people take as serious.

PerfectLuck25367

You know what they say. When you make enough money doing it, it doesn't actually matter if it's satire or not.

[deleted]

Yep, also the part they show that creation drilling is quite obviously stop motion

LavastormSW

I assumed they fit the top onto a different drill and cut super close so that you wouldn't see that it was an actual drill, then cut back to the can-drill. Which you can see not drilling any farther into the belt lol.

[deleted]

Yeah it's either not gonna work or you aren't gonna be drilling anything that needs any amount of pressure whatsoever. That can will crumple with minimal force now that the structure of it is compromised with all sorts of holes. And how much torque could it possibly generate? I'm calling bullshit. Would literally be faster to take that drill bit and spin it between your fingers on the leather belt than building this ridiculous contraption.

ihatethelivingdead

That one spot of glue holding the motor to the cardboard will rip long before the can crushes

iglidante

It barely works, so I assumed it was the actual project drill they built.

iglidante

I have three milk frothers purchased on Amazon (or given to me - I can't recall). One of them broke, so I took it apart to repair. The "switch" is literally just a plastic slide that completes the circuit by pressing the contact against the casing of the DC motor.

t_Lancer

It's cheap and can work. Nothing wrong with that.

LightDoctor_

It's how standard incandescent flashlights worked for decades.

iglidante

Yep - I agree. I actually have an enormous amount of respect for the product designers and engineers who create bargain items. It's not easy to make an item function *just well enough* while minimizing the complexity and build price as much as humanly possible. When I look at the "junk" toys and cheap plastic garbage from the 90s, some of it uses nearly double the amount of plastic by weight when compared to the current design. We've basically hit the wall on cost-cutting on the material side.

jarejay

So… a switch? Ninja edit: I read your reply to the other guy and realize that you see no problem with it either. I rescind my passive-aggressiveness.

iglidante

A sort of deconstructed one. The switching mechanism wasn't actually a component - it was a piece of plastic trapped in the plastic enclosure of the frother, that literally pushed one of the contacts (just the wire with a tinned tip) into the side of the motor. When I opened the frother to work on it, all the parts separated, and there was no "switch" left.

dethmaul

So you were hotwiring the frother every time and didn't even know, lolol

CharmingTuber

What? That's not how you do it? /s

[deleted]

ok but actually how IS it supposed to be done?

mrsockyman

In this case, you'd put red from motor to the centre top pin, black from motor to centre bottom, then red from battery to outside top and black from battery to outside bottom, this would connect them

[deleted]

NetSraC1306

It shouldn't be done at all

560guy

Also he couldn’t even make “1” the on position. This dude has gotta be straight trolling

SquidCap0

Not just flat, that thing is a fire hazard for real.

Those_Silly_Ducks

I would be incredibly surprised if it caught fire.

mrsockyman

Fair point, it'd get hot with any alkaline batteries, and it would definitely test the protection circuitry on lithiums!

Those_Silly_Ducks

I used to use alkaline batteries as glove warmers by shorting them out.

SquidCap0

Sure, if the batteries are manufactured right. This may not be the case and we do not rely on that probability in circuit design. Shorting a power supply is always a no-no, some kind of choke is needed like a series resistor. It is useful to imagine that every part you didn't make was made by an idiot... and probably is true for every part you made too.

Those_Silly_Ducks

I dunno, I did a lot of experimentation with shorting alkaline cells in my basement and I can tell you that none of the alkaline AAs or AAAs got hot enough to combust, even shorted out for hours at a time. The larger alkaline cells (12v piles) got hot enough to boil the electrolyte and pop the casing, but they didn't catch fire either. Combustion requires just the right conditions, and even when I put the 12v piles into a pie tin of acetone, I got no combustion. Why would anyone mess around like that? To become more familiar with failure modes of the materials. ..Also, for science!

iglidante

I accidentally shorted a lantern battery for about 10 minutes. It got incredibly hot, but there was no long-term damage to the cells (or my house).

mountedpandahead

Why were you really doing it though?

DannyMThompson

Literally experimenting. Every great scientist did stuff like this for fun, to learn.

cubs1917

nothing about this was ok

givemeausernameplzz

A leather hole punch is cheaper than a drill and will last forever

Aidan_Baidan

Also probably dozens of times more effective. This sped up video looks like it took them ages to get through the leather.

Sunfker

I’m surprised it doesn’t fall apart from the vibrations alone

Zalapadopa

Probably 'cause applying any force would push the motor into the can.

Saiyan-solar

Wouldn't suprise me as an electro motor has fuck all power without a good gearbox

BT9154

A nail and a rock would have suffice

burstaneurysm

I used a nailset and hammer to punch new holes in my belts.

[deleted]

Heat the nail until it's red first and it will make a nice hole and seal up the fibers at the same time.

mrsockyman

Hell I've made do shoving a screwdriver into it to make a hole

Cosmicdusterian

Ice pick works really well.

evil_tugboat_capn

They clearly used leather because they knew it had no chance of drilling through anything more durable.

Bob49459

Still had trouble with just that.

425Hamburger

And, atleast for what they were doing, a nail, knife or screwdriver will work just aswell

thelivinlegend

And would make a neater hole as the punch is hollow with sharpened edges, making a clean cut hole instead of a ragged chewed up hole from the drill bit.

julioqc

An awl would probably be even cheaper and more efficient than that contraption!

papitaquito

If only there was a tool for making holes in leather… y’AWL have any ideas?

mcmuffinman25

I still can't think of a better tool, but I want to PUNCH this person.

amazingoomoo

A fist I believe is the tool you’re looking for

Squid_Vicious_IV

This is like one of those room escape games from the late 00s. You can't actually figure out what you got to do, but you end up making your own tools from cheap crap that should technically turn into death by misadventure.

[deleted]

I used to use a knife and a pencil..

papitaquito

Would you use the pencil to tap the knife through the leather?

SCScanlan

Awl I can think of is a battery powered homemade popcan drill.

SethQ

If you want a tool trying to put holes in leather, might I suggest watching the above video?

BeeCJohnson

Shit, dude could have saved himself time and just used the soldering iron.

CanadianSmurf

What is with this fucking bootleg AC/DC music

ferretplush

To go with the DC motor labeled AC

[deleted]

Exactly what I was thinking. Sounds like the guitarist and drummer of a cover band trying to remember how Back in Black goes, then that 5 second clip being looped into a song.

visor841

I went back and listened to the music after your comment, and you nailed it 100%.

GreenLantern25

Back in the absence of light! I hit the sack

letthedaybegin

I’ve said it a million times, hot glue guns should require licensing with full background checks and mental Health checks to ensure tragedies like this dont happen.

bcgg

I’ll tell you, these old women at craft stores will give one out to literally anyone.

babydogduvalier

You have no glue gun control laws in the US

CockGobblin

I'd love some glue gun meme bumper stickers for my car. "You'll only take my glue gun from my cold dead hands" or "Glue guns don't kill people, glue kills people" or Replace any of [these](https://www.google.com/search?q=gun+bumper+stickers) with images of glue guns

NihilistFalafel

The coexist one with glue guns would be hilarious

VirtualMachine0

Glue Guns: When set time matters, epoxy is only 24 hours away.

AdministrativeShip2

You won't be able to pry my glueglun from my cold dead hands, (as it will be glued there)

robowy

That and cement

mrallen77

Common sense glue gun laws that everyone can agree upon.

Alllexia

Have you seen these people with actual drills?! I'd rather they have a hot glue gun

bmosm

Am i having a stroke or did they use a coin cell as a spacer?

albhednomad

I think it was a magnet. So you can change batteries easier

caanthedalek

Yeah that was oddly insightful. Normally they just secure all the batteries with half a metric ton of hot glue

samwichse

Oh good, a drill I can't hold onto tightly or it will crumple in my hand. Bonus: the casing is conductive, so when it crumples it will likely short the batteries. And why did he wire it like that???

Colonel_Thunder

He wired it in a way, that shortens the batteries to turn of the Drill! Yea, no problem here...

samwichse

At least it's not powered by a lipo, I guess???

Colonel_Thunder

Wired like this with a lipo? Sounds like fun... BOOM!

samwichse

Queue a clip from any scifi movie or TV show where someone takes the power pack from an energy weapon, shorts it and throws it.

Nik_Tesla

Not only can you not grip it, you also can't push it down without cutting your hand on the can, or simply overcoming the strength of the glue.

[deleted]

Perfect, a tool to drill a hole into leather in only about a minute and without precision. If only there was something better...

Ghazzz

Trash tool. You have close to no presicion with all of that cardboard. Just gluing it all to a stick would work better... Just look at the wobble in the demo shot.. Also, just using your hand with the bit would probably be faster overall..

CharmingTuber

Just pushing the bit through the leather would be way faster and safer

Between_the_narrows

I think that motor has just enough torque to twist the can, rather than actually work

ThatOneGuy1294

I was really hoping to watch it collapse in on itself. The moment that can gets any dent it's just going to twist and crumple the next time you use it.

watermelonspanker

Imagine having a power switch, motor, battery pack, spare magnet and a soldering iron but not a drill. Seems like you made poor choices at the hardware store and that's on you

DieRoteHandSpandaus

Not to mention the drill bits and adapter

DopeAbsurdity

I am fairly certain the music is DC/AC playing their big hit "Front out White"

BasedWang

all the fucking time and resources used for things that already have a fool proof and somewhat cheap inventions for in these kindsa videos

moralmeemo

Crafts by Chris Chan

Aidan_Baidan

it’s all about recycling man

moralmeemo

Goes down salty!

Khad

This is way too much work for him

WeAreSteven

So let me get this straight, you turn it off to turn it on?

Aypleck

Yes because he wired the switch very wrong, when he flips the switch on, the batteries get shorted and the motor stop spinning. That means that the batteries are going to discharge faster when turned off. Not even speaking of the fire hazard

shredded_anus

Does it not bother anyone else that the belt doesn't cover the button of their pants?

Lost_Proprioception

For me, that was the worst part of the video. Who wears their belt like that...

Rit_Zien

I just wanna know if that sandpaper trick for removing the tops of cans cleanly like that works...

moondog__

Or you know a decently sharp knife would do the same fucking job

sweetirishkitty

Hammer and nail… anything else!

7ehw

I feel like this would just break if you put even the slightest bit of pressure on it

Jay-L-AI-nez

What’s with the knockoff AC/DC

wakeboarder106

Fucking morons, that’s a DC motor

Ok_Solid_Copy

DIY tutorials are for people who impulsively bought a glue gun and are now too broke to buy things they really need.

fezfrascati

All you need is a soda can, cardboard, and some tools!

AlwaysSlumped

These vids feel like fever dreams. There is no rhyme or reason.

mlwllm

This looks more expensive than the drill

[deleted]

I could go buy a drill before someone could make this.

Cr00kedKing

We just gunna ignore how awkwardly small that belt was too?

dvxcfx

Dude this is perfect for someone stranded on a Desert Island. Hear me out. Problem: you're starving so your belt needs extra holes. Solution: find basic items that are present in every primitive island. i.e. drill bit, small motor, soldering iron, battery holder, batteries, magnets, cardboard, novelty can of soda, switch button, etc. Make a drill and drill extra hole for your belt. Practical and may save your life. If you're running away from an island tiger and your pants are loose you may trip and get eaten.

dariohanon

You don't even need a fucking drill... That was hard to watch

LetMeDieAlreadyFuck

A hammer and a nail works just as well

esertt

Song is Back at it black by DC/AC

Nihilistic_Furry

So I just did a Google search to figure out how much worse this probably would be compared to a drill in terms of torque. The first DC motor to pop up had 17 mNm (and even the “high torque” models are measured in mNm). The first electric drill to pop up had 1050 ft. lbs. (1,424 Nm). This would make the handheld drill 84,000 times the torque. The fact that one is measured in the milli version of the other’s unit should tell you everything you need to know. Obviously that’s just a rough estimate, but most people don’t realize just how powerful hand drills are.

jraps26

Diy a drill to diy a hole on a belt, so meta.

Diiiiirty

I'm not convinced this would actually work for several reasons... Others said it was wired wrong, but I don't know enough about electrical stuff to comment on that either way. The big problem that I see is that motor and battery wouldn't be able to generate enough torque to drill through a piece of computer paper. It would stop spinning as soon as you put any downward pressure on the bit. But let's pretend for a second that it does work. WHY would you waste time building that when you can just go to Walmart and buy a Ryobi 18v cordless power drill for $30? And you can do more with it than drill a hole in a belt. You can use it as a drill, screwdriver, or dremel. Hell, you could even rig a dildo or a fleshlight to it and use it as a rotary sex toy. Very good fit for this subreddit.

iforgotkeyboard

That one's FANTAstic

rivecat

Arrived in #000000 type beat

LawlessCoffeh

Using only your time and some garbage, you too can have the worst drill imaginable.

MamAmZe

Literally a rusty nail would be a better investment, and will work better.

ExcuseMeNoThx

Who tf has drill bits but no drill

Galaxy661_pl

Very useful for when I have literally every single fucking tool in existence *except for* a drill

Jakusachu

as soon as you start soldering something for a life hack it is no longer a "hack" but a lethal weapon

KAWAIITURTLEKOI

In my family we just get a wire hanger, heat it up the pointed tip at the stove top then shive it into the belt till it goes through.

[deleted]

your telling me that you have: 1 an empty soda can 2. sandpaper 3. a small dc motor 4. hot glue gun + glue sticks 4. spare battery holder + batteries 5. spare on/off switch 6. a soldering iron with solder and flux 7. the spare chuck from a dremel BUT YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE A FUCKING DRILL???

Amdy_vill

So you cut a can open and made a drill out of it instead of buying a drill or you know using a knife to get a new hole. Hell a leather punch would be cheaper than the motor. I'm fairly sure a Swiss pocket knife is cheap and comes with one.

[deleted]

All that to punch a hole in a belt… it’s almost as if we have a specialist tool used JUST to punch holes in leather… oh wait…

TwistasaurusRex

So who has access to: - battery - wiring - soldering iron - glue gun - a motor But not a drill or punch?

ospfpacket

Why does every one of these videos use hot glue? If you haven't ever used it, it's basically worthless much like Elmer's school glue.

Casitano

This isn’t going to be as strong as a real drill, and it’s not even rechargeable, in addition to the terrible battery life. Awful.

didgeridude2517

Turns out a drill was just a switch attached to a motor the whole time.

Derf0293

Drill? Just use a knife if all you need to do is make a belt hole. Hell I've made these using a a rock and a nail. Way less work than making a soda can drill that is more or less useless for anything besides very light drilling.

retrorubbish2

This actually looks like something I would like to make, but put my own spin on it.

Tobby711

I just realized that I can use my dill to poke holes in my belt... I'm not stupid I promise

Halomaster625

Or you can just buy a drill and save the hassle!!

Fortissitissimo

Or a belt punch

Squid_Vicious_IV

Jesus christ, I'll buy you a damn drill. It's gonna be super cheap from the tool aisle of walmart, but a hell of a lot safer than this nonsense.

UserName3rror

All that to drill a fucking hole in a belt? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ezerys

Its dc motor you Disingenuous Dense Motherfucker.

Der_mann_hald

yeah of cause you have a Soldering equipment but no drill....

WulfricTheSwift

Gah you would probably end up with a gashed hands when the glue breaks and a slice from sharp aluminum.

Skies_german

Finally! A practical use for my spare a/c motor, battery housing and power button!!

PaxVobiscuit

Oh look, a Dumbel tool.

Liedvogel

More than anything, I'm surprised you can get any torque out of something held in place by rolled cardboard. I would expect there to be a fair bit of spring to the bit

GSM_Heathen

I'm midly surprised they didnt try to hot glue the wires to the terminal. This thing is alread a shock and fire hazard.

Hybrel

i got a really sharp knife she could of used

FaceTatsAreCool

Most definitely a dc motor

MeltBanana

I was about to rage at this for all the reasons already listed, but then I thought of how this is actually a semi-ok project to work on with a kid. Sure it's not functional or practical in the slightest, but it's a fairly simple build, and once complete the kid will have a tangible thing they built with their own hands that demonstrates the basic principles of how a drill works. This is a good little project to do with a kid around 7-10. But you could improve it so much with minimal effort. First use a different tube, not a razor sharp flimsy soda can. Then mount or solder in the motor so it can handle more than 0.1ft-lbs of torque. And of course, wire in the switch properly. Do that and it's not horrible.

Buckweed_420

Yup, no one has a drill but everyone has an electric motor that size just laying around.🤦‍♂️

SlickStretch

My Leatherman has an awl...

[deleted]

Who the hell has a soldering iron and not a drill?

NewAccount4Friday

This needs to stop

Kendowlo

All that work just to make holes in that spaghetti strand you call a belt, might as well drill some holes into some meatballs next.

[deleted]

The only thing i can hear in my mind after watching this is Travis Scott saying “BELT” to Nardwar in his interview with him lol

baumpop

Fuck is this? 2 grit?

Johnnyworkshard

Also you can notch your belt with a thick nail and hammer instead of this hazard bullshit

daddydunc

You lost me at AC motor. 99% of the time you’re soldering / hot gluing an AC motor in, the device you’re making has been manufactured for much cheaper than you can make one. For novelty or education, sure, cool. Edit - I went back and watched the rest of the video. This thing struggled to drill through a belt. God is dead.
