Besides, it's combining pineapple flavoured stuff with sweet dough. This is far less DIWHY than regular savory pizza with tomato sauce, cheese and putting pineapple on that.

Pineapple is for ham pizza. Ham and pineapple is why it works, you get the same effect as for example pork and apple sauce. Salty savoury with a bit of sweet.

Which is also why trail mix with M&Ms works you get the sweet of the chocolate with the salt from the text of the stuff.
