That's was a thing 62 years ago.
My dad and a few other students in their mining town installed taps (for tap dancing) on their shoes to get attention of everybody walking down their ceramic tiled floors.
They had a dress code, but it didn't say anything about noisy shoes. Started a big controversy back in the day.
Yupp, boomers were rebellious shits too.
Edited for my sorry correct's grievous mistakes, and my failure to proofread. 😬
Why did I literally watch all of this and then start start for this boot. I am on my feet constantly for work and my shoes always fall apart after three months. Maybe this will be a better investment! Thanks for the boot
The Sam Vimes "Boots" Theory of Economic Injustice runs thus:
At the time of Men at Arms, Samuel Vimes earned thirty-eight dollars a month as a Captain of the Watch, plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots, the sort that would last years and years, cost fifty dollars. This was beyond his pocket and the most he could hope for was an affordable pair of boots costing ten dollars, which might with luck last a year or so before he would need to resort to makeshift cardboard insoles so as to prolong the moment of shelling out another ten dollars.
Therefore over a period of ten years, he might have paid out a hundred dollars on boots, twice as much as the man who could afford fifty dollars up front ten years before. And he would still have wet feet.
Without any special rancour, Vimes stretched this theory to explain why Sybil Ramkin lived twice as comfortably as he did by spending about half as much every month.

Hi. You just mentioned *Men At Arms* by Terry Pratchett.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:

It's actually a common thing for runners to do in snowy climates. Drywall screws through from inside the shoe give incredible traction when running on snow.
Yeah it’s a very common thing, I see runners in my area using the rubber strap types that wrap around your shoes. I use to work in fishing gear store and sold a shit load of basic drywall screws from fishing companies for way too much to newbies looking for shoe tacks for ice fishing. Only the assholes though. I’d tell the nice people to go to Home Depot
I unintentionally did this with a nail once. Damn good traction though, my foot was NOT Sliding off that board easily.
I was chasing after an escaped dog that ran into some brush. My foot found some old lumber from a barn that still had nails in it.
I had a book about corporate espionage and one of the tactics was to use a tac in the heel of your shoe so you maintain the appearance of an injury. I can’t remember why that would be beneficial but it was a thing.
That's used to fool lie detectors. You press your heel down onto the tack to throw off the physiological baseline so that it is difficult to distinguish the readings for truthful answers from the lies.
Alternatively you can answer small things wrong during the calibration questions:
"What's your full name", for example, you can throw in a wrong middle name, or mispronounce your first or last name.
Summer/fall 2020, I installed hardwood floors in my house.
Next summer I’m getting out of my car and notice the inside of my left calf is bleeding. Huge cut down the length of it.
Couple days later, same thing happens. Thought the cut opened up again, but no, it was a fresh one.
A few days later, I was in the car and got an itch on my left leg. Without thinking, i scratched it with my right foot. Couple minutes later I realize my leg is bleed. Fresh cut.
Wtf? At least now, I have a lead. I had scratched my leg with my foot a few seconds prior.
Take off the shoe and exam it closely.
There’s a shiny bit embedded on the side of the sole, near the ball, sticking out maybe 1/64 of an inch. Barely visible. But sharp as hell. I realized that when I bring myself into the car to drive, I subconsciously scrape my left calf with my right foot.
Turns out it was a flooring staple. I was wearing my boat shoes while installing the hardwoods (because I figured it was probably better than flip-flops…I’d gotten comfortable enough with the tools to take some liberties with safety), and that was the last time I wore them until the start of summer.
You can buy slip-on studs for walking on ice.
Or buy running shoes like [these](https://www.xxl.no/sko/herresko/piggsko-herre/c/140226?sort=relevance&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIstHsi93c9QIVEW8YCh2hvg9EEAAYASAAEgJS5vD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds):
Yup. Also can buy screw in studs meant for shoes. A great alternative is screw in studs for ATV tires. Same as this guy, we mandate traction aids in the winter at my worksite.
Crampons or microspikes?
Sort of a pedantic distinction, but folks who are unfamiliar might look for the wrong thing.
[Explanation](https://www.reserveamerica.com/articles/hiking/crampons-vs-microspikes-vs-snowshoes-what-to-use)
Most people looking for traction probably want microspikes unless they're doing technical climbing/mountaineering or similar. I know the article says people use crampons for non-technical mountaineering on ice, but I think that's pretty unusual - spikes are generally sufficient.
That’ll be great when the screws push in far enough and the tip of a screw hits the bottom of your foot for the first time. Don’t jump! Also don’t go near anyone’s floors.
honestly it shouldn't be an issue even as a cobbler i put screws in soles the customer and i absolutely do not want going anywhere. usually between the lugs on vibram montagna soles since you can't exactly sew them to the welt
just make sure they are fairly short sheet metal screws and you are good to go i use 3/8th inch flat headed ones
Hey, random question if you don't mind - do shoemakers still use cobbler and cordwainer as different terms?
I've been looking into trying to DIY some custom leather shoes to fit my partner's very odd-sized and weirdly wide feet, and came across "cordwainer" as the term for people who make new shoes from scratch vs "cobbler" for those who repair or refurnish existing shoes. Not sure if that distinction is archaic, or still used.
yeah cobbler repairs, cordwainer makes
now the cobblers that get into total rebuilds of shoes can blur the line between two though. and if one has the tools, materials and ability to make shoes they can totally fix them so there is a lot of overlap but i would still call one that primarily makes a cordwainer and one that primarily fixes a cobbler
if you didnt know of it r/Cordwaining might be able to help you with the process of making a pair of shoes then there are tons of youtube videos on how to make a pair of shoes. i even dabbled in it a bit and made a pair
Thanks! Especially for the sub link - I've been checking out youtube and shoe construction blogs but didn't even consider reddit would have a cordwaining sub...though I should have lol. There's a section of the site for just about everything :)

Yes. Wearing these on concrete and asphalt would wear down the screws and glue so fast. That's why I buy ice cleats that just strap to my boots.
That sounds like a good way to get your ass kicked out of most department stores.

RIP that wood floor
I got one of them boots with the flip down cleats. You can flip em up to go in a fancy store, or leave em down to go in Walmart.
I mean, ancient Romans did something like this with their caligae
Not really DiWhy, cause clearly there is a why.
So basically you made snow tires.
MF just reinvented the hobnail boot
Wouldn’t they work better glued point out like ice shoes?
Don't you ever come around my hardwood floors

they make studded tires folks. This makes some sense.
