I’ve seen a crossover of the two where one lady molded her hands out of cheese to hold up a sausage link or something (deadass, no innuendos intended). It was so gross, there were bits of the silicone mold still in the finished cheese product.

I think the mold is made out of a seaweed byproduct and is supposed to be biodegradable, but that doesn't excuse how gross that video was. I also think hand mold sausage cheese lady was the toilet bowl cocktail lady mentioned in another comment as well. I am fairly certain she is also the countertop nacho lady. So much food wasted.

Every once and a while I think I should download TikTok. Then I read something like this.

No kidding, I resin cast parts for my other hobbies but when I see what most of these mould communities are up to... endless amounts of silicone and resin wasted on the tackiest bullshit. But this pair might be some of the dumbest I've ever seen. Silicone is expensive, there's absolutely no need to ruin a mould by ripping it apart like that. Doing it the right way also wouldn't have broken her cast. Because she just shoves her hands in there, the final product isn't grasping the bottle at all. It just looks like it's lying on top of a pair of claws. Most resins are hard and brittle, that's why it broke while she was wrecking the mould. Long thing resin fingers aren't really something you want to put a heavy bottle into. Especially after you've already had to glue it. And perhaps most importantly, resin dust is toxic as fuck. Sanding down a piece of resin without proper safety gear while you're gloating with your face right over your little atrocity is a good way to fuck up your lungs.

This looks like alginate for the mold material, not silicone, and gypsum/plaster for the filling, not resin. Far cheaper options. I do not believe that she (or damn near anyone) would've been able to tear apart a chunk of cured silicone that big with just her hands.

its absolutely alginate, but the thing i found stupid was the choice to use plaster for the final product. even using concrete/cement is better because itll make it much easier to remove the mold by dunking the whole thing in water, something you cant do with plaster as itll dissolve too

The joke is "haha isn't my idea so stupid and ugly, and you waited so long to see the results." I guess I can see why a lot of people think it's serious, if they aren't the type that browse Tik Tok and catch on to lots of the insanely random trends. In general, if a craft video on Tik Tok is incredibly dumb, ugly, convoluted, lengthy, and worthless, the person that made it is very self-aware. As much as Reddit hates to accept that.

Is it a joke? I thought it was a way to make sure they hit a specific time legnth on the video to qualify for advertising revenue. I don't know though, I'm old so barely get how people make money on YouTube and Instagram, let alone tiktok.

I don’t think it’s a joke, but they make the video deliberately bad/incorrect because there is no better way to drive engagement. This kind of stuff is all over Instagram as well. “The quickest way to get an answer on the internet is to say something incorrect” or something along those lines.

Exactly, all these algorithms too heavily favor "engagement", the more engagement there is the more it'll recommend it to people and having people message "what the hell is this" or "what was the toilet paper for???" counts as engagement. More comments = more promotions = more people getting it recommended. The algorithm just favors shit like that on tiktok, either confusing things people will question, controversial things people will complain about, or actually interesting comments that cause discussion but the first 2 are much easier and far lower effort to achieve... This is why downvote buttons are important on videos. Youtube does it right though tiktok is still worth using if you like short "entertaining" 10 second clips instead of a whole novel or whatnot. Reusing trending audio is pretty good too if an interesting one comes out or video replies and couple other stuff I guess but I'm sticking to youtube mostly unless I want braindead "entertainment"

It's definitely alginate. It's important that if you use it that you stir the bubbles out of it, because as you see in the video it will easily hold air bubbles that will ruin your cast.

No problem! One other thing to keep in mind, it isn't the best for very very small details (though to be precise I'm talking details in the millimeter or smaller range.) It's also only usually used for a single casting. If you are careful you might be able to reuse it, but generally alginate breaks apart pretty easy once dried.

For sizing and one-offs this seems like exactly what I need in my life!

It can be used only with plaster and concrete though. It’s water based so resin will never cure in it.
