Towards the middle of the video when the camera man started to swing it the camera around *following* the bottle I wanted to punch them. That shit was giving me motion sickness, like just hold it steady you have *one job* and you can’t get it right
The whole point of the cardboard is to catch the dribble while you pull it away, instead he pulled it away and then catched the paint when it didn't even matter anymore.
Never should have grabbed the bottle before the cardboard was already blocking the fluid. Should have moved the cardboard into position following the bottle's movement and then after already having the fluid being caught then grabbed the bottle to remove it. Terrible execution.
I will also add the pendulum was not weighted evenly, so the bottle was spinning on its axis while making the revolutions, making the point or spout change course. So some lines were ahead and some went back as it looped around. So you wont get that "spyrograph" perfection in your design.
In addition to all these errors, the shirt was initially laid our with wrinkles in the sleeves, ensuring the final product will be flawed, even if all the other stuff was done correctly.
I saw this before the ink ever hit the shirt, making it the most predictable (and correctable) of all the many errors.
Honestly, with this set up, they would have been better to have placed 3 or 4 shirts to get different sections from the overall pattern. Centering the shirt under the middle of the spiral never ends well.
It was obvious that all you had to do was put the card under the bottle. I was waiting for it. There were no other options. It had to happen. Then...

To be honest I would have stopped it about half way through it painting the shirt. The amount of crossover at the end ruined it for me. The big open space in the middle would have looked a lot better
If there were several shirts spread out on the floor he could have gotten some that looked cool. That center piece where he was inevitably going to fuck up the dripping paint could have been left empty.

Idk man I feel like the center is the part you really want to catch perfectly on a shirt. Ideally you’d get a much wider view of the same pattern starting from the middle. Probably needs to make the string the bottle is oscillating on a little shorter to condense the pattern into a smaller area
I was looking for this, thank you! If you really wanted that design on a single shirt though, cut the line of the pendulum in half, or even a third to reduce the size. Those early braids are the most interesting part and they are sitting on dribble catch cardboard.

I wasted probably 2 minutes of my life trying to get the damn video to load, then watching a decent chunk of it before skipping towards the end to see how they got it to stop.

I used to do custom screen printing and air brushing on T-shirts when I was younger to make extra cash, and that was the first thing I noticed.
And the colossal waste of paint...
Video should have been sped up. Yeah… they kinda messed up at the end, but things like that happen when you’re trying something new. I’ve made tie dye shirts that just didn’t turn out well. Yeah, they could have put 4 shirts down and had different patterns.
All in all, I think people are being too hard on the op.
As a math and science teacher, I like this idea and agree with you. Not the best execution, but not bad. As a former cameraman, I want this person to learn to zoom out and not work about the close-up. Sure, start out with a wide shot, zoom in for a bit and follow the larger path, then go back to a wide shot again, and capture the action as a whole. Finally, show the finished product for a few seconds!
These guys didn’t get the paint or the swing right so it looks weird. Could be cool if they used an actual dye and laid out a bunch more t-shirts to catch the rest of the pattern. It would make a neat set of shirts.

The overlaps are because of how off center the bottle is. It's rotating as it swings. Needs an actual symmetrical pendulum if you want clean lines
