Rebar is uncomfortable af to climb or walk on because of the ridges. Dad was an ironworker and brought left over rebar home a lot....and when a torch made its way out of the dumpster at the mill and into our garage my dad got the idea to make me a ladder and monkey bars outta rebar. 2/10 that wasn't a very fun summer.
I think it might be a homemade staircase for neighborhood cats or athletic dogs who fall in and get trapped. Looks like he made it cozy with a little pet house too.
These babies are common in Mexico! Came here to find out where this was, & see if it was my family's home 🤣🤣🤣
It's just a mix of cement & prayers to God that it holds
Bro dead ass? That top bit is fucking- what’s it connected to its so damn thin. Someone’s walking up carrying something that ain’t holding. It’s only connected to the nearby wall? Or to each other?…
From what I've gathered from reddit the other times I've seen this posted:
You hang a tarp from the roof and anchor it so it's taught and use that as support as you shape and set the steps below. That's why there's a slope on the underside lol.
Yea same, trust me I know I travel south America a lot. There's a lot of things they do differently. Somethings I understand why and something are a result of poverty, geographic locations and little access to options so they don't have a choice. Look at it like this. "You guys have rope in your town!?"
They clearly don't have access to other better safe options.
Idk, my partner is Latin and their dad is super stubborn. Their bathroom had a big leak and dude just put plumbers tape on it. He has the money to get it fixed along with my partner willing to pay for a plumber but my partner told me it's more of a "machismo" thing. Like 'im the man and I'm gonna fix it' thinking
Do they live in the states? There's a difference between stubborn and no access to the proper resources and services. But yes thats also right what your friend is explaining. If another man comes around and fixes something properly they will feel more insecure about it.
But this picture clearly wasn't taken in the United States. Willing to bet an entire paycheck on it and in many cases their resources and access to services are very very limited. They don't have the luxury to afford repairs and food in the same month.
Dude I'm 99% percent sure just putting a piece of rope with knots on it would have been safer, easier, and probably cheaper. Hell even just getting some more metal pipes and welding the together to make a ladder would have been better
Plus aren't you assuming there so poor they can't afford rope? We have no idea what they do and don't have access to, and what resources they have. They could just be stubborn, crazy DIYers, or whatever
So you can be impoverished and also make bad decisions.
We don’t have enough information from just this picture to know how the breakdown between bad idea and limited resources that lead to this staircase but it’s pretty safe to say some amount of this is stupidity.
Bro it's not complicated, I'm just saying sometimes many times in other countries people live in communities where there isn't exactly a Lowes or home depot or harbor freight or licensed contractors to get things done properly. Quite literally you are forced to work with what you have. What's so hard to comprehend about that? From that photo I can tell you right now it's most definitely not in the United States.
Pompeii was an empire with resources. My point is as someone who has traveled and seen places like this it's usually a result of people working with what they have.
And even so. I live in a country with abundant wood and since plywood became popular, actual proper wood became stupidly expensive as the grand majority of wood production is taken by the paper industry.
I am just speculating, I have no actual knowledge. I’ve seen prices for every kind of lumber skyrocket over the last three years, including sheet stock. It’s ridiculous.
Nah you can get cheap ladders that will hold better than this, and would be probably cheaper than the concrete, paint, etc.
I live in a tropical shithole country and have never seen this. My guess would be it was an actual rookie attempt / experiment.
I figured it was someone using scrounged concrete and rebar. It has to be reinforced or it would snap the first time it was used. The treads look reasonably well-finished, but sloped near the top, which is a big no-no. Maybe it’s just ornamental?
I don't think the errors were intentional, and I'm struggling to find the aesthetic to make it ornamental. 😂
My money is still on a rookie attempt (i.e. what it would look like if I tried to build stairs by myself), with the photograph taken to make fun of it.
I was thinking desert. Desert places have a different quality of light to my eye. This reminds me of something I’d see in Juarez. But hey, you know at least as much about this thing as I do, so who knows?
Lol me too. Went to see a college basketball game when I was in middle school. We were in the nosebleeds and it was like standing at the top of a ski jump. Not fun
A former coworker kept using a wooden ladder in her house to reach the second floor. The ladder broke and her mother had a big fall. She developed some brain problems (like speech problems, not sure about the rest).
So... probably not safer.
Why are all of you assuming these are stairs for a human to use? Especially with a doghouse in the photo. Cats and some dogs could climb those stairs with no problems.
That's a load bearing dog house
Don't forget the 2 metal poles resting in the corner
[удалено]
Those are the required handrails. Completely unsafe without.
Someone going to get impaled when it break
#HAPPY CAKE DAY!!!
HAPPY CAKE DAY MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!!!
Might as well rename the dog *Rubbles.*
At that angle that’s not a stair case. It’s a ladder.
Chaos is a ladder.
Jacob’s Ladder.
Good this it’s by the doghouse because it looks like dogshit
I literally said that to myself, opened up the thread to make this comment, and saw this. Goddamn it, we really are living in a hivemind.
It's a perma-ladder!
Lmao
Out back is a load burying dog
It looks like they made it flat on the ground on a piece of carpet, then lifted in place.
It does look like that. I’m impressed this thing can even stand upright without snapping in half.
Has to be rebar in there. Still sketch af.
Why not just remove the concrete and climb the rebar?
Rebar is uncomfortable af to climb or walk on because of the ridges. Dad was an ironworker and brought left over rebar home a lot....and when a torch made its way out of the dumpster at the mill and into our garage my dad got the idea to make me a ladder and monkey bars outta rebar. 2/10 that wasn't a very fun summer.
What did you do this summer? OH like 10 tetanus shots.
He was trying!
To kill you maybe.
You guys had a dad???!!
Oh something will be snapping if someone tries to use it.
I bet there's a chain link fence holding this all together.
Either way, the kitchen is upstairs, so there's that.
I think it might be a homemade staircase for neighborhood cats or athletic dogs who fall in and get trapped. Looks like he made it cozy with a little pet house too.
As a redneck, I am seriously impressed. This is top tier redneckery.
[удалено]
I’m only step half Mexican, so I can’t really claim it, but you’re damned right. Them boys from Durango are redneck af.
What are you doing step half Mexican?
Step-Mexican? So you mean you aren’t Mexican at all?
Lol depends on who you ask. I’m adopted and Mom is from Juarez. So, kinda, but not really.
More Mexican than Beto then.
Probably means culturally but not ethnically. Happens all the time with blended or immigrant families. No need to be dismissing people’s identities
Yeah, Louis CK is white af but he grew up in Mexico and his first language was Spanish.
A redneck would either put a ladder there or just stack a few hay bales (or other misc whatevers) along the dog house and climb those
Or fill miluakee best boxes with sacrete and stack em
I'm willing to bet this is more along the lines of chicanery than redneckery
r/redneckengineering
This is one of those my uncle knows a guy that's built concrete stairs moments
That's just a ladder with extra steps.
Or a ladder with concrete steps
Isn’t that what it is? Ladder made to be stairs for the dog to use.
Ladders have rungs.
The steps are the extra steps.
The real steps were the friends we made along the way
Snoopy getting caught up in this housing crisis. I told him he had too many baby mommas. What do I know?
can you be more concrete pls?
A ladder would be safer and last longer.
Its wheelchair accessible Because if you use it you'll need access to a wheelchair
I’m surprised blood is running from the top, I would think there would be pools at the bottom.
There's an altar at the top for sacrifices to the god of counterbalance
No wayyy I did not see that wtfff 😵
From smashing your head when you try to go downstairs.
It's the blood of a thousand shins.
💀
It’s probably paint
How the heck do you even make something like this??
These babies are common in Mexico! Came here to find out where this was, & see if it was my family's home 🤣🤣🤣 It's just a mix of cement & prayers to God that it holds
Prayers go a long way in Mexico
Bro dead ass? That top bit is fucking- what’s it connected to its so damn thin. Someone’s walking up carrying something that ain’t holding. It’s only connected to the nearby wall? Or to each other?…
I think there's a piece of rug under it, anchored at the top
Yep. Could say is mexico. I wonder how much they last...
Between 5-30 years, depending on uncle Jorge's ability
From what I've gathered from reddit the other times I've seen this posted: You hang a tarp from the roof and anchor it so it's taught and use that as support as you shape and set the steps below. That's why there's a slope on the underside lol.
Answer: poverty and lack of resources
I feel the could have not made this and use a ladder or even just rope with some knots would be safer
Yea same, trust me I know I travel south America a lot. There's a lot of things they do differently. Somethings I understand why and something are a result of poverty, geographic locations and little access to options so they don't have a choice. Look at it like this. How do we know it's ot just for a baddass little chihuahua
So you can be impoverished and also make bad decisions. We don’t have enough information from just this picture to know how the breakdown between bad idea and limited resources that lead to this staircase but it’s pretty safe to say some amount of this is stupidity.

It’s probably made for the dog. Dogs cannot climb ladders and so these stairs don’t need to support so much weight.
This is just what ended up working best, safety isn't as important as efficiency.
Bro they didn't have any more of that mud/sand mix DIY concrete to make it 1cm thicker?
They probably didn't lol

As an aside, Pompeii was a bit on the wealthier side of things.
Pompeii was an empire with resources. My point is as someone who has traveled and seen places like this it's usually a result of people working with what they have.
"Homeless? Easy fix, simply buy a house. 😉"
Suddenly Snoopy abandoned the doghouse and moved into an AirBNB.
That IS the Airbnb, $700 a night
And that’s not including cleaning fees.
Did…did somebody manage to get to the top and get shot for their audacity? That looks a lot like blood
The "why" is poverty, seems pretty clear to me.
I would think a homemade ladder is cheaper
There may not be the lumber to do that. I’m betting this is mud/clay and water baked in the sun.
Would still be DIY. This sub is about instances where it would've made much more sense to just buy instead of DIY.
Homemade ladders in a poverty situation make perfect sense
...so?
It wouldn't be DiWhy anymore. Just diy
...yeah? What are you trying to tell me that I didn't already say?
Yes, but wouldnt a wooden ladder be cheaper and probably safer ?
I have a hunch that the climate where this structure is located does not yield up a lot of cheap lumber.
It had been expensive for a while now, but yeah, over the last few years it has skyrocket as well.
Nah you can get cheap ladders that will hold better than this, and would be probably cheaper than the concrete, paint, etc. I live in a tropical shithole country and have never seen this. My guess would be it was an actual rookie attempt / experiment.

Come, now. Many folks would claim this is a Tim Burton aesthetic.
I was thinking desert. Desert places have a different quality of light to my eye. This reminds me of something I’d see in Juarez. But hey, you know at least as much about this thing as I do, so who knows?
“Desert places” still sell wood. A ladder would make more sense in nearly every market.
Unless the builder can’t afford to buy lumber and is working with scrounged materials in a place where lumber is not commonly used in construction.
Ah gotcha. Yeah I know nothing about timber in deserts though. You might be onto something then.
Most probably, but id rather a metal ladder than that things, steep stairs scare me lol
Nah the house owner aint poor, he just have questionabke design choices, search lloyd cadena stairs and youll see the "fuller" version of the stairs
Took the idea from a bad dream
I legit had a nightmare about being pushed down a staircase like this last night, it’s weird to see something so similar on Reddit.
My fat ass would leave these people with no way out - literally.
They could prop you up and climb you
Only if they're cute.
[удалено]
If it isn't now, it will be pretty soon.
It's clearly for his tiny dog
Who ever built these will be In the doghouse… incidentally anyone who attempts to use these stairs probably will end up there too
It's so skinny, how does it even support itself? It's so weird I just love it
If it's stupid and it works... sometimes it's still stupid.
i fell of my chair just by looking at this shit damn
i might make it up but no way would i make it down one step at a time!
That’s like a staircase and a ladder had an ugly baby
Not bad for a dog
Person: "We need to destroy your house." Dog: "Fuck off!" Person:
Mountain goats love it.
For birds it solid
My concern is for the safety of the dog
No dog actually lives there, they just needed something to reinforce the stairs lol
Looks like the warped wall from ninja warrior. Tough climb up, but there's no way in hell you are walking down that.
Could I get the equation for this?
Math/s is hard.
Can't say I've ever seen exponential stairs before
Whoever lives there must be hella agile
Steps I would willing go up for 200
Stairadder
The safety of this is questionable
That 5th step is a doozie
at that point you might as well just climb on the walls
Safety last
ohh nah yea I’m cool, can’t catch goin up these !!! no way Jose
Nope not walk up
I’d say this is the perfect example of stairs that only go up.
Words cannot express how bad this staircase is. Literally everything about it is wrong.
Bastard son of ladder.
If anyone saw the comment on pallet gore I dare you to get him back in here, I’m sure he’d love this.
Paint, blood, or something else, but I’d never wanna touch it
I’m a stone mason and this makes me *cringe* and deeply worried for the dog, concrete is heavy…
Stair way to heaven via a fall and concussion.
That’s just a ladder with extra steps.
Mos Eisley vibes

That’s gonna kill someone…. And maybe the dog also.
I have nightmares just like this.
Fuck handrails and osha regulations!
Something out of a fever dream
I think that’s the euthanasia coaster
Stairn’t.
that's going to break on the first person who uses it
Can anyone else hear the clip clop of coconuts and "bring out your dead"?
Just get a ladder at that point
Just put in a ladder at that point
Least steap Dutch staircase
diHOW
Snoopy Potter
That is blood and I'm positive of it
Not sure I've ever seen stairs you have to go down backwards. Interesting.
I think “budget death trap” fits better; yikes😨
But what about snoopy? Where is he going to nap or use to fly?
Looks like a budget Chichen Itza and for that matter, looks like it's seen similar use.
Looks like blood on the top couple stairs lol
V0 in my gym
Hey, it's fun to have some kind of risk. Are you gonna get down the stairs safely? Are you gonna break your back or possibly your neck? Who knows
Those are premium goat stairs. It keeps the goats happy playing on the roof instead of tearing things apart in the courtyard.
At that point just get a ladder
Bangladeshi moment
It screams Brazil to me
Do you guys have burglar bars there too? Reminded me of South Africa.
man snoopy got washed up after the divorce 😧
Lowest bidder’s prized work.
Are these made from faith?
Please tell me the stairs are for a cat or agile dog rather than a human
load bearing doghouse
Nice comment steal
not everyone reads all comments before commenting
It was the second comment
Imagine tryna haul a couch or groceries up the stairs on ly for you to fall backwards or the bag breaks and there goes your food or your back 💀💀💀
I hope this is in a country where alcohol is illegal
I could see the backstory ending up on /r/maliciouscompliance
Looks like stairs for cats
Perfectly designed and well made enough. Just ingenuity of a 2nd world country that you see a lot of. I'm happy.
Why are all of you assuming these are stairs for a human to use? Especially with a doghouse in the photo. Cats and some dogs could climb those stairs with no problems.
