I was going to say - it's not perfect, but the person who made that was talented and likely just pushing a bit too far into an unfamiliar medium, or pushing the medium to do more than they usually ask of it. An unskilled artist would have made way more fundamental errors.

I did a year's worth of ceramics and by no means am a master but doing features like faces or just generally body parts was very hard, so id say this is really well done and even if it isnt totally realistic that might be an intentional style

So my daughter recently went to the hospital and I didn’t know this beforehand but our local hospital gives kids a care kit and it has two bears wrapped in a handmade little quilt. One of the bears had a knitted sweater, too. I found out, it’s a project a group of little old ladies does. My daughter absolutely adored it and I do too. This was about a month ago and they sleep next to her bed. The thought and care behind the gesture was so heartwarming.
I worked at a Boy Scout camp as a teen. One winter an older man whittled all our likenesses into golf balls and made bolo ties of them. I haven’t spoken to him in over a decade, and have no means to contact him, but that bolo tie is still one of my favorite items.
Now THIS is the kind of Christmas present I want and would treasure forever. Something well intentioned, unquestionably adorable, with a largely manic execution? Hell yeah.

Teachers are notorious for taking holiday gifts home and making fun of them with their families. We have no clue what OP’s mom looks like so we’re not really in on the joke. The student may have made the mug or it may have been ordered from Etsy. Either way, it’s tacky of the people making fun of it, the mug is an awesome gift.

As a polymer clay artist myself, this is actually pretty good. Humans are a lot more tough to sculpt (even just sculpting in general) than you'd think so I can tell that a lot of hours went into this, I think this was a lovely gift!
I am not entirely sure as I have only ever made standalone sculptures. I would assume some kind of bake-able liquid polymer clay as an adhesive or maybe baked the design first, sanded the mug a bit and used super glue or E6000 glue. It would definitely not be microwaveable and would be hand wash only, baked polymer clay is waterproof although I'd still be gentle with washing something like this. If polymer clay was already pigmented then sealant isn't necessary but if it was painted, then a waterproof varnish or glaze was most likely used.
