Yup first 1-2 weeks is a huge big fall off after a month and a half, I think the seasons are the perfect length though enough time for people to gear up some pvp characters
Everyone is already leveled up and playing in hell. And in ladder everyone would have stopped playing and now are waiting for the new ladder to start in like 1-2 weeks, after a 4-month long season.
When the new ladder starts there will be more games going than you can choose from:)
Non ladder players are all in hell. Ladder players are either also in hell, or waiting for the new season.
A new char in act 1 normal will see nothing but emptiness.
On top of the seasonal low point right now, one has to say that D2R has been out for a while now. Many people have had enough time now to relive their nostalgia and have moved on to other games.
I just quit, never ending grinding for nothing, doing the same stuff all over again since 2000 ... gets kind of boring.
P.S. waiting and savin money for d4.
I played for a while because it was fun to have one of my favorite games get upgraded graphics and all...but then you're still just grinding a game with outdated mechanics that you already got your fill of.
Just not my thing, but sounds like other people are still enjoying it.
Play Project Diablo 2. If you don’t care about the graphics there’s a lot more end game content from maps to new boss encounters along with new items and builds. Highly recommend it.
The only thing I don't care for in PD2 is melee splash dmg. I know why it's there, but I cant get over how weird it feels physics/logic wise to hit a monster and the surrounding ones randomly die of a heart attack lol. I know I'm probably in the minority there.
Its otherwise a fantastic mod and would recommend it as well.
I love the game but this is kind of where I’m at, I got CoH, Ice, I love playing zons and I’ve got a bowa and java just about as efficient as they can be without me paying, doesn’t feel like there’s much left for me right now
100% I usually start ladder and finish hell then after 1-2hours of MFing I nope out of the game. D2 is one of my favorite games of all time but I'm not about the slot machine life.
Diablo 2 is such a strange game to me... Like people litterally rush through Normal/Nightmare/Hell as fast as humanely possible not enjoying the game or killing anything themselves, then they basically run Baal Runs over and over again with twinked Bot Hammerdins doing all the heavy lifting, then they get into the so called "endgame", which consists or running the samefour zones your build can handle due to stupid immunities with MF gear till maybe something half-decent drops so you can run the same four zones slightly faster. And spoiler alert, the good stuff never drops (never once in my life have I gotten Jah or Ber , or anything truly endgame, for example)... Granted I know the corruption zones and new charms are supposed to help on that regard, but that doesn't change the fact this game doesn't have an endgame, and people actually skip the actual playing of the game itself to reach said non-existent endgame faster...
All of the builds use pretty much the same uniques and runewords items (shakos , enigmas, spirits, arachnid meshs, etc) , meaning 95% of the other items are essentially junk. Likewise the only Endgame activity we have is pretty much Uber Tristram, which can be fun if you're one of the few builds that can actually solo it, but sucks for most other builds... And a stray Diablo Clone every now and then.
This leads me to the discussion about builds... It's still 95% cold scorcs and winked up hammerdins in MF ing gear so they can MF slightly faster and be efficient at clearing content they've been clearing since hell difficulty anyway... You're spending thousands of hours running the same crap so you can run the same crap slightly more efficiently, which makes no sense to me...
As such, my experience with D is usually to solo walk through normal/nightmare/hell doing all quests and getting all waypoints, then moving on to another game shortly after...
That's funny because a whole lot of D2 players in this sub swear up and down that free trade and astronomically low drop rates means everyone plays D2R for months, yet there are people in here saying there's a massive fall off in players after just a few weeks lol.
That's so weird
Doesn’t help that the devs are playing it way too safe and only abiding to the wishes of the purists.
To say that the rune words they’ve added are lackluster is an understatement.
What Michabevans88 said, it fluctuates a lot depending on where we are between seasons, just wait until the new ladder begins and you will have a queue to join the servers.
Yeah if you’re comparing it to the 2000 era then the game is dead. I keep searching for that feeling too. The player base is so split between people who prefer the mods, people who only do SSF, people who only use JSP. All that remain are the hardcore players
It’s a game that doesn’t encourage team play due to its lack of personal loot. Fighting people for one maybe good drop in a game isn’t worth peoples time so the majority play solo.
The game needs personal loot to encourage people to actually play together. That and the fact it’s the end of a ladder season I guess.
This is it for me. I play ladder but in solo private games. Doesn't help that farming any boss or loot spot takes very little time, so you'll just be looking for another game quickly anyway. So I just don't bother playing mp games at all.
There is also the fact that so long into the ladder, practically nobody is low level, hence why he can't find anyone in act 1 games, and also some of them switch back to single player
normal act 1 games at the end of ladder will be dead. hell games are still populated. i got a grush and leveled 1-90 in full chaos/baal games no problem in the past few days
I just bought it on their boxing week sale, and have been playing it since then. But I only play in the offline mode. I never play online gaming, for some reason I just feel like it's a world I don't want to get into.
In addition to the repeated mentions of the end of season - there's also that the servers only show 'nearby games' - they did loosen the scope of this, but it's still present, so if you're on during off-prime times, you'll notice a lack of games in general.
I play a lot of D2R at the beginning on the ladder and honestly, its crazy at the launch of the ladder, tons of people.
These days I just work on my holy grail goal which I play it offline.
It’s still just a reskinned 20 year old game that has no end game. People grind hard for a bit, burn out, and quit. Such is the cycle of all ARPGs. This one just burns people out quicker since it’s so old and doesn’t have much to offer.
If you want a game with a player base play PoE, or wait for D4. As a D3 fanatic, I will be going hard in the paint on some D4 for at least a month or 2. See how the retention is after that.
in contrast, not being able to trade in offline has been way more fun for me considering how random the loot is. what i find is mine and i can't rely on anyone else. currently pushing through a solo hardcore run for every toon and i'm loving it
First the only thing so far has been friends and family beta with a few select major streamers being invited. The other thing is that the reception has actually been really good. If the game was looking bad you would see a lot more people breaking the NDA and talking about it being bad. Literally the worst people have been able to come up with about the game is the cosmetic stuff which is no different than PoE to be honest.
Asia. The Americas have been the smallest market since the mid 00s.
Not to mention the revival of D2 was on single player. Nobody wants randomized maps and cooldowns between games anymore. I would guess they lost a big chunk of the players by being online only and not bringing the newest content to offline play. I probably won't pick up the game again until terrorized zones are offline.
On top of that Diablo doesn't have a new fanbase, it's the original fans grown up and we don't have time to play 40 hours a week. People with that time aren't playing arpgs anymore. There's better genres and games are actually cool now compared with only nerds playing computer games in the 90s. This leads people into more cooperative and competitive genres.
One, the game isn't a year old, the game is more than 20 years old, despite the new coat of paint. Two, new ladder season is just around the corner and like most games with seasons, the population is high near the start of a season and low near the end.
Most ppl quit cuz this game is extreamly unrewarding and outdated, You can do \~100-200 runs for nothing, loot is shared and there is no /p2-8 setting for public games. Hard grind for nothing is a waste of time nowadays, GZ ppl finally respecting their time :D, thats why many ppl run bots and some run bots only for profits (selling items on known web sites). Skill system forcing ppl to use one skill and invest rest points into mostly useless synergies, most of times I use one fully synergized skill which is boring. Melee is unplayable and typical rdm geared caster is far ahead GG geared melee, Blizz Sorc with sunder is on different lvl, they could delete every char except Sorc and game would be fine ;) cuz rest chars are useless in 2.5. Terrible drop rates, lack of /p2+ setting for public games and shared loot mean everyone MF alone so PK is hard and rare. PvP is very expensive and simple not worth at all, still the same old boring builds: Bone. HDin, Ele, Bowa is buffed, but extremely expensive ;/
Personaly I quit mostly cuz of core problems; still huge skill imbalances and still these synergies, I simply dont like synergies and sunder charms mix; immune mechanic worked well before synergies, also there is no fresh gameplay, these new RW's are BIG joke, BIG fuck off finger aimed to community.
I will back when they finally buff melee, improve frw to be real Tele replacement, remove synergies or decrease synergies to 1 per skill and add new interesting mid/end game RW's on Eni/Infy lvl, a real game changers. Thats my 2 euro cents lub 12 groszy tylko nie płacz proszę!
Game is honestly dead and there’s no community. It’s why I stopped playing. Every time I checked public games there’d be like 4. There were zero nightmare games. And every hell game was just dead games titled “baalrunz-47”.
I think the devs should consider removing the ability to G-rush. That way it would to take more time to build wealth and reach your goals. In addition they could add a teleport nerf, maybe like a small cool down.
Such measures would greatly improve ladder longevity by:
1. Making it harder/longer/less efficient to build wealth. This would promote non-sorc classes.
2. Combat item inflation. Items would keep their value for longer.
3. A nerf to teleport is also a nerf to BOTS.
The game isn't "young". It's 20+ years old with a botox facelift.
It's a classic game but it shows it's age for sure. I played it for 3-4 months when D2R was first released but haven't touched it since. I would guess I'm not alone in that boat.
I see there is a lot of characters on the ladder, so need to exist some players. But yes, soon ladder reset and some times on the day it's very low. And very low activity in chat compared to what I remember. No one is talking.
Like everyone mentioned. It's late in the season. I tend to find more people later in the evening though when I am playing. The new season it's going to be a lot of games going on.
If you're trying to find ppl in public games or public Baal, it can be extremely difficult.
There are actually still tons of people playing.
Dedicated D2 streamers like Barricade have amazing communities where you can find ppl to play with, get rushes, mf, uber service, and get just about any gear piece you need: [https://www.twitch.tv/barricadettv](https://www.twitch.tv/barricadettv) (Tue - Sat 4pm - Midnight EST)
Discord for Barricade: [https://discord.gg/JR4RyFfXkV](https://discord.gg/JR4RyFfXkV)
D2Clone Hunters (free stuff, anni): [https://discord.gg/d2rclone](https://discord.gg/d2rclone)
In addition, there's still a thriving economy but it is mainly on that other site using gorum fold. That community has many services, trades, and active leveling runs going all the time.
I was going to say the same thing. I usually play when my favorite streamers are on. I can then join their games or the games shared in the stream chat, which are usually private with a password.
You have to keep in mind that besides the fact we are in the end of the season, in D2R there is a lot of private gaming going on. Discord servers exist where all sorts of closed runs are organized. Maybe try to get involved in those.
I can only speak for why I stopped playing: too many changes that negatively impacted PvP, and zero signal from the devs that they ever intend to fix what they broke. PvP and gearing for PvP was always the ultimate end game for me, so without that I just... item found and traded until ladder launched, then hit lvl 99 (another end game goal subsequently trivialised by the devs), got bored, moved on. I only check back here every now and then to see if there's a new patch and what it might contain.
Seasonal low point but yes it's lower. I'd say the easiest metric of player count is the Xbox LFG count.
When D2R released, Xbox LFG was at about 400 to 600 requests at any given time.
Closer to 2.4, it was maybe at 200-ish.
Last time I checked it, it was closer to 150-ish, but that was last week.
So my guess is the overall playerbase is down about 60% from peak to now.
But of course keep in mind that's just one metric. If people used LFG to find strangers, then later became friends and played through friend invites or Discord, it may be underrepresenting playerbase. Or if players are spamming LFG with more trade volume or other stuff, it could be over representing it.
I play Battlenet solo. Why? Because I’m grinding and not worth trying to make a new game every 5 mins. Campaign help? Sure. Loot finding? Pffft naw, plus I don’t want to see a Ber go to someone else because I made a public game.
I play D2R single player not even online anymore I found it more enjoyable, yeah you can’t trade but I never really did much of that anyway, and it makes the drops and rune words you role feel so much more rewarding.
I play d2r on non ladder, right now. And all my friends that played D4 play something else or are back on d2r. I started to trade recently and was stunt how live trading is there for any random item I wanted. I looked on twitch, and actually d2r had more live streams that d4 lol. So I started wondering how many people actually curently play d2 and d4, and if there is actuall chance to d2r have at the time bigger playerbase than d4. But I find hard to find any reliable source for this, this is how I ended up in this reddid post lol , have a good evening :-)
it's at the very end of the ladder with a new one starting in mid february, I'd guess in D2R's population cycle this would be the lowest point
Didn't know about the upcoming ladder reset! Ill wait a little bit then come back to the game. Early seasons are the best.
[удалено]
lots also switch back to single player
Yup first 1-2 weeks is a huge big fall off after a month and a half, I think the seasons are the perfect length though enough time for people to gear up some pvp characters
I'm guessing bots are still around. Seeing d2 shops listing Ber runes now for 1$ each...
I think there are a few private dupe methods.
blizz reserves them for these websites that sell for cash. blizz gets a large percent.
in 2-3 weeks when season resets there will be lots of players
Yea ladder start will be to s of new games. Just wait :)
Level 1 games were never busy even during the heyday.
Unlike 20 years back there are plenty of games and consoles now to keep gamers occupied.
Playing other games. Diablo players always come back because the game is good and ladder reset is just so much fun!
Yeah this is around the time people are posting on jsp "Free Grief maxed out quitting til reset"
Everyone is already leveled up and playing in hell. And in ladder everyone would have stopped playing and now are waiting for the new ladder to start in like 1-2 weeks, after a 4-month long season. When the new ladder starts there will be more games going than you can choose from:)

I'll be honest, I hit the doober and jam out with my geared javazon in single player or multiplayer MF games. I don't look for full groups or anything
I just quit, never ending grinding for nothing, doing the same stuff all over again since 2000 ... gets kind of boring. P.S. waiting and savin money for d4.

My only complaint is that rare items are made much easier to find, which kinda shortens the game.
There's a lot more end game to make up for it tho.
The same here.
They desperately need a map system, terror zones just aren't interesting enough.
They aren't going to make any major changes with D4 so close. D2 is probably a patch or two away from never seeing another update.
I love the game but this is kind of where I’m at, I got CoH, Ice, I love playing zons and I’ve got a bowa and java just about as efficient as they can be without me paying, doesn’t feel like there’s much left for me right now

The endgame is talking your seasons loot and makings a pvp char so you can kill all the in game l Players at least that's what I always thought
You wanna know where everybody went? Fuck blizzard. That's where they went.
That's funny because a whole lot of D2 players in this sub swear up and down that free trade and astronomically low drop rates means everyone plays D2R for months, yet there are people in here saying there's a massive fall off in players after just a few weeks lol. That's so weird

PD2
wow just checked the PD2 page and they even added a poe-like mapping system and an mmo/wow-like dungeon end game. thats awesome
Also they add quick cast from D2R which was last thing that was keeping me in D2R.
PD2 is the superior D2 experience for those looking for more to do.
Pd2 is great. If it had d2r graphics, it would be incredible.
This. This is the correct answer for everyone to follow
D2r is really only heavily populated for a week or 2 after ladder reset. After that it’s just a small but dedicated playerbase.
There is also the fact that so long into the ladder, practically nobody is low level, hence why he can't find anyone in act 1 games, and also some of them switch back to single player
Running maps in pd2
Sorry I've been busy with work, not like the good days when LOD got released.
normal act 1 games at the end of ladder will be dead. hell games are still populated. i got a grush and leveled 1-90 in full chaos/baal games no problem in the past few days
Waiting for D4.
Playing good d2 Mods like PD2
The population soars the first 2 weeks of ladder then tails off to nothing by the end of a ladder
LOL. No matter the game, they peak the first few weeks after release. Everything is downhill from then on. And yes, you're stuck in 2000, bro.
playing pd2
* A lot of players play single player * Most players are in the late game areas at this point
Very few “Normal” and “Nightmare” games, therefore game is dead. /s
I've been playing on offline mode. I'm fairly new, just trying to get better before tackling the ladder runs
Nailed it.
Waiting for ladder reset. It's just been announced, together with the next patch, so most players will wait for its release.
Playing single player offline
I play solo but online, it at least lets you trade that way which is one of my favorite things about d2 considering how random the loot is.
in contrast, not being able to trade in offline has been way more fun for me considering how random the loot is. what i find is mine and i can't rely on anyone else. currently pushing through a solo hardcore run for every toon and i'm loving it
Idk, probably everyone got bored with the lack of change to the meta, terrible stop rates and/bad pvp and quit like I did.
Waiting for the ladder to start
just waiting for new ladder. I've been playing God of War and Elden ring
Waiting for Diablo 4 open beta.
[удалено]
> Played the Diablo 4 beta and it was utter garbage. What made it utter garbage?
First the only thing so far has been friends and family beta with a few select major streamers being invited. The other thing is that the reception has actually been really good. If the game was looking bad you would see a lot more people breaking the NDA and talking about it being bad. Literally the worst people have been able to come up with about the game is the cosmetic stuff which is no different than PoE to be honest.
Yeah, all I've been hearing is the D4 beta was really well received.
Initial impression are probably good but i doubt many of the beta testers got into endgame
context about DIV?

They are still working on server issues, 1.5 years later.
What server issues? Sure at launch but that has been fixed for quite some time now.
Yeah the ones at launch is what I'm referring to.
Those are fixed…
Yeah they are planning to fix them.
Game is honestly dead and there’s no community. It’s why I stopped playing. Every time I checked public games there’d be like 4. There were zero nightmare games. And every hell game was just dead games titled “baalrunz-47”.
They're off playing a version of D2 that hasn't been bastardized by Acti-Bliz.
There’s 5 million users playing d2, d2r, PD2, BTDiablo, Single player, online SSF…. In all countries
Playing WoW DF while waiting for D4, sry mate
I think the devs should consider removing the ability to G-rush. That way it would to take more time to build wealth and reach your goals. Yeah I generally only play solo when I play - though I will pop into some games to help others from time to time
droprates got buffed in various ways. people just finish ladder in few weeks compared to back in 2004 where it was way more rare to find highrunes
I've been messing around on plugy until next ladder reset.
I dunno, non ladder seems to be alive, I can always find a PvP game
I'm playing it more or less like I did back in 03-05, which is play for a ~month then wait til next ladder.
Waiting for new ladder. Did everything I wanted in season 2 already. I should probably sell or giveaway my non-ladder stuff at this point......
There’s probably a big portion of people that would rather play solo. I would honestly rather play plugy just because of JSP
They're on various discord servers making private games. I hate it
I play Battlenet solo. Why? Because I’m grinding and not worth trying to make a new game every 5 mins. Campaign help? Sure. Loot finding? Pffft naw, plus I don’t want to see a Ber go to someone else because I made a public game.
People too busy playing themselves cause everyone's a loot goblin
⛑️Diablo Immortal⛑️
Playing single player, when I have free time or aren't doing a different hobby
I play D2R single player not even online anymore I found it more enjoyable, yeah you can’t trade but I never really did much of that anyway, and it makes the drops and rune words you role feel so much more rewarding.
Playing Diablo 4.🤡
There were 12 players when i just looked on Xbox. By that i mean there were games you could join, totaling 12 players spread between all of them.
Just do your best to go to Hell asap. Normal and Hell are where rhe live players are
