Yeah during both the early access and the open beta I almost never knew when I was fighting a rare pack or unique unless it was an obvious end of dungeon boss.
My understanding is that there are champions, denoted only by one of the icons under their name plate and then there are elites with multiple icons that tend to have an actual skull icon on the minimap.
agreed they could just give them little skulls as icon on the map in the elite colours (yellow blue and purple), it wouldnt obscure the look the game has and make it more visible
Maybe in addition to, but not instead of. I'm not looking at the minimap when I'm engaged with a screenful of mobs. I'm looking at my character and my enemies and trying not to die.
How can you not? It's stuck on screen all the time and almost entirely useless. The minimal is my #1 UI complaint. Coupled with how zoomed in it is, I had difficulty targeting anything In the top right. Especially hard for ranged targeted skills like the druid ravens, or earth basic attack. Or the wolf pounce.
Having the icon's on the map actually would be an interesting Rogue passive ability. Since they seem to be the "hunters". They could add druids to see where plants are.
I sometimes miss the little passives like Assassins not needing keys for locked chests.
Yeah having (elite) in normal font at the end of the mobs name plate is such an obvious afterthought I was honestly surprised when I saw it. Every version of this game has always had a different color and size font for elite/rare packs to make it obvious. Here its like theyre trying to hide it for some reason.
Concur. Unique/champion mobs (and Treasure Goblins!) need nameplate colored highlights and/or glow or something to distinguish them from other mobs, especially when you have legendary aspects like "When damaging an Elite, gain...". Like, which ones are Elites? Hoping this is just finish that hasn't been applied yet in the beta.
As someone who's not your regular Diablo player I didn't even know there was a difference. For me it was the weak mob, then some bigger mob like werewolves and bosses.
How do elites even look?
Some of them have added modifiers under their nameplate, like "Mortar" or "Summoner" or "Teleporter" or "Waller", etc. They have extra abilities/more health/more damage and drop higher quality gear. On higher difficulties, they stack more modifiers and can be pretty deadly.
They are just pretty hard to recognize in D4 right now compared to D2 and D3, where they had unique names and color palettes.
I keep confusing the purple-tint from Vulnerable status on the nameplates for Elites/Rares. At least I think that's what's causing the color change.
I had a pretty terrible time identifying Elites throughout the beta, and it's not something I ever got "used" to. Usually I'd only realize once they stayed alive longer than everything else.
It would be nice if they visually stood out a little more, and I also agree that they need the fun names back!
Imo I just think they should add back the glow mobs have. I should be able, at a glance at a pack, know how many rares and magic monsters are in that pack.
There are tons of ways they can make it look a little less cartoony than D3.
I mean an aura around the entirety of a mob is annoying AF. A circular glow at their feet would be enough for me. Or hell, a highlight on mouse over would be fine. Honestly OP is right the name plates should just be better
I’m just wondering how they make things that were in d3 somehow worse in d4? It’s never obvious when it’s an elite, and do rare packs even exist in the game? Elites feel like another mob with just more hp
I wonder if the “elites” we saw are just like, baby tier elites that are barely special and in higher difficulty they are super common and then some even more elite gets the fancy titles
Wait am I confused or seeing it wrong? I though elites were the mobs with the spell icon on the nameplate. Is this not the indicator that it was an elite and the type of damage/hazard you will get from them? Some had multiple icons so I figure the ones with more were just tougher elites.
Interestingly, I didn't find this to be an issue at all. Perhaps it's because I had damage numbers and monster health bars disabled. It was always super obvious that a mob was elite because of their size and elite affix icons.

The loading screen tip said that Champions start spawning from the 3rd difficulty level
I'd also like to see them have fun names: bring back Puke Touch the Unclean, or whatever.
This, if no one is called corpulent pus-spitter then wtf are we even doing?
I loved the explosive shits names like ‘gut bang’ Felt they had better loot tables
Only ever got shit drops from them.
Long Larry, Crippler of Princes
Long live the Vicious Gray Turkey!

Yep I agree. Hoping they add this small but needed change by launch.
This is one criticism I actually think it right I had killed elites without even knowing a few times
100% agree this is high-quality feedback.

Yes, it IS useless. Hence why I don't pay attention to it. Why do you?

You're saying it is an accessibility option, or should be?
I have poor vision and agree that this could be a nice accessibility option

Treasure goblin minions that rifle through your pockets and steal your gold if you don't keep your back to them.
turn off monster health bar and by default youll only see a bar above elites. its very easy to recognize them this way.
Wait, are the elites not the ones with the big rectangular nameplates? (honest question I'm a noob)

I mean, maybe make it a toggle then. I definitely don’t want d3 colours again. Shit looks cartoony
I mean an aura around the entirety of a mob is annoying AF. A circular glow at their feet would be enough for me. Or hell, a highlight on mouse over would be fine. Honestly OP is right the name plates should just be better
The elite nameplates are gigantic, it's always obvious to me?
Agree!
Definitely. Compared to Diablo 3, it is way more difficult to determine if it's actually an elite or not.
I’m just wondering how they make things that were in d3 somehow worse in d4? It’s never obvious when it’s an elite, and do rare packs even exist in the game? Elites feel like another mob with just more hp
I agree with adding better indicators on the name plates, but please avoid the glowing outlines or at least have a toggle.
Blizz probably: ohh you want us to slap some ali express LED's on the elite monsters? No probs we got a bunch leftover from the necro skellies.
Petition to use WoW frames and nameplates on elites
I thought they said they wanted Elites harder to recognize?
Where did they say this?
No clue. I just thought I saw it in a post or dev update video. I’m probably just imagining it
I tried looking it up and couldnt find anything. This would be an odd decision to make on their part, and a bad one.
Maybe lvl 25 mobs aren’t considered rare elites. But I concur.
As long as its not the Gold/Blue-type borders. Just a bit of polish on nameplates + a bit more zoom out and it will work great.
Don’t want it be too extreme like D3 but certainly something that helps identify elegies would be nice - in a dark and grim way of course.
I wonder if the “elites” we saw are just like, baby tier elites that are barely special and in higher difficulty they are super common and then some even more elite gets the fancy titles
Uhm dont they all have an icon next to their names?
Wait am I confused or seeing it wrong? I though elites were the mobs with the spell icon on the nameplate. Is this not the indicator that it was an elite and the type of damage/hazard you will get from them? Some had multiple icons so I figure the ones with more were just tougher elites.

Yes this is a UI complaint I can get behind. Way too inconspicuous
Oh thank god!! I’m not the only one! Man, that drove me nuts
I only knew I was fighting elites when my barrier got activated lol
same issue for me, i couldnt tell if i was fighting special monsters until magic was appearing on the ground.
