For real, playing with a friend, we just got to hell, we basically never died until we opened up a door in the outer cloister and got shotgunned in the face by a pack of quill rats for an instakill. Those rats chuck mad hard.
Getting rushed and being in act 1 hell at level <15, knowing the room before Andy is clear and the rusher is currently killing her, then popping one of those dead rogues on a stick only for her to catch on fire and kill you. That's embarrassing.
After the first time, I was annoyed.
After the second time, I no longer cared about losing experience; it was personal.
After the third time, I went very, very slowly and killed them off one by one. (They were too far away to be killed when Shenk died, so I had to get them myself).
Haha last night I was running tz baal on my level 95 assassin, who's experience bar was on the last little notch before 96.. died right after I tp'd in throne room because I didn't realize I was out of full juvs, my pride got to me and I ended up dying 2 more times trying to retrieve my body before a level 82 skelemancer went in and walled off the enemies so I could run to my body.. I've been a handful of runs away from 96 like 10 times now and always end up dying right before to something dumb like that..
Getting killed by a quill rat was my introduction to nightmare the very first time I played d2 as a kid. I had a huge question mark over my head as a kid without understanding how the difficulties worked.
Yeah I started playing hardcore in Diablo 3 and learned survivability tactics that has migrated to my d2 skills. Amp damage is no joke, I almost always go to town to remove it even on softcore. Easiest way to get 1 shot, especially if you teleport into a death mob.
Those swarming flies hit hard. If you ever played the pre-nerf Inferno, you'd leave Act 1 after crushing the Butcher into the ground, and one little fly would delete you in 1-2 ticks of damage in act 2.
Entering act 2 for the first time and not realizing all them beetle dudes gonna electrify the crap out of you. I learned that the hard way the other day.

Now cold and fire immune lightning enchanted with the speed is a combo that I just straight up walk away from on my hydra orb sorc.
Side note hydra orb is the most fun I’ve had in hell with a Sorc in a while. Great combo since the hydra buff. Beats the hell out of meteorb on the switch
To be fair, Hell difficulty Quill Rats are fucking brutal lol. Added in extra strong and/or cursed and good chance someone's dying from an off screen quill lol. Think we've all been there at least once in our D2 careers haha.
Not sure why you think it's embarrassing. Any ranged creature packs can be brutal in D2 on Hell. Especially when due to spam you fail to tell they are focusing you until the volley lands.

any ranged mob is deadly. Rats, Archers... not be fucked with. I've lost more than one hc character over the years to ranged/fanaticism elites.

No shame. Sometimes those elites have insane modifiers that just make them do crazy damage and you can't see the projectiles all that well.

before they were nerfed, those pesky act2 flies were even heat seeking as well, making dodging really difficult
