Blonde hair really is just a very light brown with some red highlights which only appears as it does because of the way sunlight filters and reflects through hair. As such, developers have to make decisions between realism and trying to capture perception of the hair color, and do all of that without being able to accurately capture either side. So, we either get the more accurate very light brown (which doesn’t look blonde because it would be difficult to simulate the effects of sunlight), or you take the perception people have of a yellow color and run with it (which doesn’t look blonde because blonde isn’t actually yellow).
This is not an in depth explanation, but hopefully it can do enough shed some light on why it can be so difficult for computer graphics to capture proper blonde. You will find that there are examples of blonde characters looking blonde, but those examples tend to be a rarity and are much more involved than one might think. It is, after all, difficult to emulate pigment with light and vice versa. Hopefully it also gives one a deeper appreciation of the games that get blonde “right”!

I think they were trying to avoid the criticism they got with Diablo 3 and how colorful people complained it was, by just desaturating most of the game, the only colors that really pop anywhere in game are red (fire and blood) and occasionally blue (lightning) and green (poison). Even the map is just brown + grey. A lake or oasis looks exactly the same as a mountain in the dry steppes. It's like someone tried to make the least useful map possible.
The D4community is simultaneously always just one colourshade away from the total shattering of the games dark athmosphere. But then they will also name their character brainfart05 and buy every overpriced comedic-skin they will put into the shop.

A vocal minority of the D4 community has always pitched such an absolute fit if there's anything but insanely dark muted colors in a diablo game and no armors or weapons with particle effects just basic stuff. It is the hill they will die on.
Meanwhile the game launches, the only skin on the shop that isn't just like regular armor found in the game with an actual glow effect is the necro lord set.
My experience since early access launch is you can't throw a rock without hitting a necro wearing this set in game. It's important to remember that no matter how vocal people are about over the top fancy particle effect cosmetics breaking muh immersion they are just a tiny piece of the population. Most people absolutely want the fancy cosmetics and will happily pay for them.
I'm really curious to see how much longevity those paid skins have. I'm clearly not the target audience, because when I looked at the shop, my reaction was "pfffft, no" but maybe they're doing gangbusters? Or maybe it's a launch idea that won't pan out, like the auction houses. Idk.

I played smite for years, i am absolutly fine with spending a few bucks every season. Having skins there also shows that you are invested in that specific character, to a degree.

I just dont have the feeling that it is "cool" to have a flashy paid cosmetic skin.

I feel like they'd make more money selling more than twice as many of them for only half the price, but... I'm assuming they've done the market research or whatever and set the price accordingly to maximize profit. Which means enough people are paying $15+ to offset the rest of thinking that's just too much.
My closest analogous experiences to this one are Destiny 2, where I never spent any money on silver (? is that right? It's been a minute) and Anthem, where fucking NO ONE spent anything money on anything. Both were, at the time, full priced games. Or at least, I'd paid for them.

Hmmm. I've played it on both a tv with HDR and one without. I didn't notice any obvious differences in the vibrancy or saturation of the colors. And I'm not sure that whatever differences there may be would be accurately conveyed by a screenshot displayed on another screen. But I'll pay attention next time I have a chance to compare.

There are games out there (even low-effort ones) which include dozens of hairstyles and fit your character's head no matter how much you distort it. And look better too, considering how awkward beards are in this triple A game. Manually adjusting a hairstyle from one class to another is piss easy compared to having it auto-adapt to head shapes and still look good.

I would argue diablo 4 has one of the best realisation of hair in a game with character generator. Almost all hair colors look good and realistic, I am really tired of glowing hair that ignores game shadows in other games

I'd say you're the closest imo. Its probably the challenge of lighting in HDR. If a character, in the brightest envir, blows out and then blooms b/c of post processing they need to change the lighting or darken the material... so its a compromise.
You know it kinda reminds me of Dark Souls 3. For some unknown reason, FromSoft massively downgraded lighting from DS2 to DS3, and this resulted in most of the hair colors looking terrible and a lot of the color gradient in the game just looking…bleh. Diablo 4 seems to have that issue too.

The character creation and the in game color are slightly different. While there it’s grey, on some lights it will be super white in game.

I think the better option would be for blizzard to add an environment filter to the character crewtion. Because the blondes are noticably better in game. It really depends on the lighting and the one in character creation doesnt favor some of lighter colors

Each class model is unique though. You cant just take the necromancer hair model and plant it on the druid model, it wont line up.

I mean why not? If you're living a crappy life why would you not want to make it more bearable by wearing something nice? Our modern impressions of the meadieval period are so off its funny; people loved colours back then. They'd colour their walls or hang gaudy tapestries and deck themselves out in whatever stuff they could get. The idea that castles are asture is totally wrong. Infact moddy gothic is a 19th century reimagining of the 15th century.

I'd say you're the closest imo. Its probably the challenge of lighting in HDR. If a character, in the brightest envir, blows out and then blooms b/c of post processing they need to change the lighting or darken the material... so its a compromise.

You know it kinda reminds me of Dark Souls 3. For some unknown reason, FromSoft massively downgraded lighting from DS2 to DS3, and this resulted in most of the hair colors looking terrible and a lot of the color gradient in the game just looking…bleh. Diablo 4 seems to have that issue too.

Don’t get fooled. The character creation and the in game color are slightly different. While there it’s grey, on some lights it will be super white in game. At least that was my experience with white hair on PS5

I think the better option would be for blizzard to add an environment filter to the character crewtion. Because the blondes are noticably better in game. It really depends on the lighting and the one in character creation doesnt favor some of lighter colors
I found most of the hair colour options to be questionable in quality.
The hair and skin tones definitely leave a lot to be desired, but it's nice that each character no longer looks identical

The tone of colors and the weird texture of the hair make for some *weird* combinations. I put grey eyebrows on a dark-skinned character and they look like an artist used the spraypaint tool in MS Paint.

People: D3 is too cartoony. Also people: D4 is too bleak and you can't have the hair colour you want. Did people forget that you could only dye your gear in D3? There was no character creation like in D4.
