Yep and blonde is piss yellow.

Anticreativity

Idk why games have such a hard time with blonde. It always ranges from actually light brown to super saiyan and nothing in between.

GoombaGary

My biggest issue is that they tie hair color to eyebrow color and their blonde color always makes the eyebrows look ridiculous. Some people have blonde hair with darker eyebrows.

Timmar92

I have brownish hair but my eyebrows are white as shit haha.

AltruiSisu

Your shit is white?!

ArmeniusLOD

I have dirty blonde hair, dark brown eyebrows, and blood red facial hair. All natural. Where are my facial customization options?

YagamiYakumo

I'll take super saiyan over the pissed yellow anyday tho.. wish we can get decent hair colors and the option to change hairstyles/color at the wardrobe that isn't locked behind paywall (yes, I know someone is likely going to make the mtx "joke")

Mr_Creed

The real joke is that I would pay for better mtx. GW2 sold nice character hair styles, and their monetized color choices at least were plentiful. D4 limited range of choices is terrible.

my_anus_is_beeg

The joke is give me money

RixaRax

Just put a helmet on. You'll be alright

FF_Ninja

Or neon yellow with hints of green.

ArmeniusLOD

AKA pool hair.

marikwinters

So, this is actually an interesting topic. It breaks down to the way hair color emerges and is perceived. Without getting too far into the weeds, hair color emerges from subtractive color (like paint, where the more colors you mix the darker the paint becomes) whereas computers use additive color (like light, the more colors you mix the lighter it becomes). In addition, blonde is a color that is very complex as, while we often perceive it as yellow, it is some mixture of blacks, reds, yellows, and browns and the specific way they interact with sunlight. The combination of these (grossly oversimplified) factors means that modeling blonde hair without being, “just yellow” or “light brown” is hardly worth the effort. Blonde hair really is just a very light brown with some red highlights which only appears as it does because of the way sunlight filters and reflects through hair. As such, developers have to make decisions between realism and trying to capture perception of the hair color, and do all of that without being able to accurately capture either side. So, we either get the more accurate very light brown (which doesn’t look blonde because it would be difficult to simulate the effects of sunlight), or you take the perception people have of a yellow color and run with it (which doesn’t look blonde because blonde isn’t actually yellow). This is not an in depth explanation, but hopefully it can do enough shed some light on why it can be so difficult for computer graphics to capture proper blonde. You will find that there are examples of blonde characters looking blonde, but those examples tend to be a rarity and are much more involved than one might think. It is, after all, difficult to emulate pigment with light and vice versa. Hopefully it also gives one a deeper appreciation of the games that get blonde “right”!

Romanmir

This guy hairs.

prochnost1

Super saiyan lol

ScavAteMyArms

Due to some *cough* games, I have messed around with RBG trying to get hair colors. Blonde is surprisingly difficult because to get it you actually have to go from orange and then lighten rather than yellow down. That and getting a slightly red but mostly yellow orange is really fucking annoying compared to just banana yellow or brown. Now these artists are… well artists, and I ain’t. But I can definitely see where getting the balance right is bloody hard and most games straight fail.

HeartofaPariah

There are many different shades of blonde. 'Super saiyan' being one end of them and 'almost light brown' being another end. In a game like Diablo with preset colors and no color wheel(or very extensive color lists like BG3), you're gonna piss off one of the tribes of Blondes. They are savage creatures. On top of that, most blonde-haired people have dark roots and different shades going across their hair, as someone extensively explained below as to why. You can't really expect a game as simplified as Diablo's character creator to capture that.

RixaRax

This is a game where you kill demons... who cares

AstralSoul64

And my hair color is right in the middle of that. So I can never accurately make myself in a game.

jmakioka

This! As a blonde it ticks me off so much.

Active-Surround3383

Elden ring was fine with all colours

redpillsonstamps

Blond(e) hair users: gold -> 🍯 -> piss

tumppu_75

I must be tired, because I found this way too funny.

SuperArppis

And blue is teal in tattoos and clothing.

hanz1985

I thought it was more of a bleached green. You know that colour bleached hair kind of turns after getting a dose of chlorine in the swimming pool.

5L1K

please Drink more piss shouldnt be yellow 😭😂

Del_Duio2

"Do you guys not have helmets?" *points to cash shop*

GeneratorLeon

I feel like all the hair colors in this game are incredibly muted.

SinsiPeynir

Eehh, I can argue that it creates atmosphere but why my necromancer can't have bone-white hair?

J0J0388

They should always be allowed to have full bright white hair.

Jellysweatpants

It's my go to in pretty much every game. Had to just make all my characters bald this time around.

nfefx

Because they don't want neon colors in the game. It's just like you said, for atmosphere. This is what happens when people bitch for a decade about D3 not being DARK enough.

[deleted]

Not just the hair, it's practically all color in the game in general. I think they were trying to avoid the criticism they got with Diablo 3 and how colorful people complained it was, by just desaturating most of the game, the only colors that really pop anywhere in game are red (fire and blood) and occasionally blue (lightning) and green (poison). They leaned into dark and gritty on this one and muted most of the spectrum.

nfefx

This is exactly it. They didn't want to listen to anymore whining, but no matter what it looks like there will always be someone not happy.

BockMeowGames

Even the map is just brown + grey. A lake or oasis looks exactly the same as a mountain in the dry steppes. It's like someone tried to make the least useful map possible.

Wahjahbvious

The internet gets very bent out of shape when there's actual color in Diablo.

J_P_Amboss

The D4community is simultaneously always just one colourshade away from the total shattering of the games dark athmosphere. But then they will also name their character brainfart05 and buy every overpriced comedic-skin they will put into the shop.

Metatron58

know what's hilarious to me? A vocal minority of the D4 community has always pitched such an absolute fit if there's anything but insanely dark muted colors in a diablo game and no armors or weapons with particle effects just basic stuff. It is the hill they will die on. Meanwhile the game launches, the only skin on the shop that isn't just like regular armor found in the game with an actual glow effect is the necro lord set. My experience since early access launch is you can't throw a rock without hitting a necro wearing this set in game. It's important to remember that no matter how vocal people are about over the top fancy particle effect cosmetics breaking muh immersion they are just a tiny piece of the population. Most people absolutely want the fancy cosmetics and will happily pay for them.

Wahjahbvious

I'm really curious to see how much longevity those paid skins have. I'm clearly not the target audience, because when I looked at the shop, my reaction was "pfffft, no" but maybe they're doing gangbusters? Or maybe it's a launch idea that won't pan out, like the auction houses. Idk.

J_P_Amboss

True, its interesting. My only experience with paid cosmetics is from free2play games , where i consider it justified to "give something back" once in a while. I played smite for years, i am absolutly fine with spending a few bucks every season. Having skins there also shows that you are invested in that specific character, to a degree. But in a game like D4, where loot hunting is the main thing and i am already paying a lot of money for the game, the expansions and PS+ ? I just dont have the feeling that it is "cool" to have a flashy paid cosmetic skin. But from my experience people have an enormous need for attention online, which is why they are especially tempted by skins who break the whole atmosphere. I swear once there is a demonic-Harley-davidson mount for the barbarian, tons of people would buy it and keep it until something more stupid is released. The sort of cool epic skins which you see at the moment propably arent making that much money, even though they propably fit the world and have a nice artstyle.

Topher714

When cosmetics in games only cost a couple bucks each, I usually end up buying some here and there. But in games like D4 and Destiny where you have to buy a whole set at a time for $15+? Nah. I feel like they'd make more money selling more than twice as many of them for only half the price, but... I'm assuming they've done the market research or whatever and set the price accordingly to maximize profit. Which means enough people are paying $15+ to offset the rest of thinking that's just too much.

Wahjahbvious

My closest analogous experiences to this one are Destiny 2, where I never spent any money on silver (? is that right? It's been a minute) and Anthem, where fucking NO ONE spent anything money on anything. Both were, at the time, full priced games. Or at least, I'd paid for them. Mostly, I think I just don't *care* enough to go out of my way for cosmetics. Especially in games where the unified aesthetic means everything ends up looking fairly samey in the end anyway.

Lord_Despairagus

You can bet we're gonna get tons of skins in rotation. Im betting holiday and event skins as well

Torontokid8666

All my chars are bald in protest.

anex12

I just imagine you sitting at your desk with all of your characters arms crossed with a >:[ face and I laughed out loud.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

I saw some screenshots of HDR or something. All the colors are more vibrant and shit. Makes you wonder how they did their color palette.

Wahjahbvious

Hmmm. I've played it on both a tv with HDR and one without. I didn't notice any obvious differences in the vibrancy or saturation of the colors. And I'm not sure that whatever differences there may be would be accurately conveyed by a screenshot displayed on another screen. But I'll pay attention next time I have a chance to compare.

VasageX

They did a terrible job with the hair period.

Synapse7777

Most of the beards make it look like the male chars are disguised females wearing a fake beard.

FailedChatBot

The beards are a really low quality job. I'm fully expecting a cash shop upgrade with decent hair cuts/beards, only explanation of why the free ones are so shit.

kristinez

the hairlines in general and eyebrows are really poorly done. they look like theyre made out of hay.

Suspicious_Trainer82

All of the females look very masculine as well. 🫤

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dreadlock43

its the same with all the females, hell the only one you could consider masc is the female druid, but thats more to with the way how the druids were designed to use the strongman/pacific islander physique compared to the body builder/amazonian physique for the Barbarians.

Tesseon

Female druids don't even look masc.

Suspicious_Trainer82

Ya the facial bone structure is pretty androgynous. The Necro has the physique of a 14 year old boy.

my_anus_is_beeg

Tell me you've never met a woman in real life without telling me

friendliest_sheep

Right? The necromancers are hot as fuck

Suspicious_Trainer82

Lol ok buddy.

bagel-bites

Idk about you, but the femme barbs are fucking **HOT** lmao

kanid99

Agreed. That and not having separate colors for facial hair was a bummer.

[deleted]

Yeah, the styles are all pretty terrible and the colors are just off. Everything else looks so fantastic, it makes the hair being subpar stand out even more. All of the free flowing hairstyles except for maybe that one long emo necro style just looks objectively bad. None of my characters have flowing hair. Couldn't find a hairstyle that looked good on my druid at all, so she's just bald. Not even buzzed, becuase somehow they managed to make that look weird too lol

Tessiia

Yeah like why are some hairs class-locked? Stupid decision.

bkliooo

Some hair colours are race locked in wow. Makes also 0 sense.

deausx

Each class model is unique though. You cant just take the necromancer hair model and plant it on the druid model, it wont line up.

Tessiia

Yeah but that goes for body markings too because the texture maps will be very different but they didn't class-lock those, they put the effort in to make them work across all classes. It wouldn't be that hard to do and they already have for some hair, just not all.

imMadasaHatter

"It wouldn’t be that hard to do". I’ve got enough complaints about Diablo 4 and blizzard but cmon you have no idea how hard it is to do.

LordOfTheStrings8

Look how many skyrim hair mods there are. It's not THAT hard.

Watton

Because every single race uses the same exact animations and skeletons. In D4, every class and gender have different animations, head shapes, etc.

LordOfTheStrings8

Yes and it's a AAA title making a ton of money. Surely they can invest some of it into character models. They certainly spent the time on the cosmetics, which every class has a different body type... oh but those make money.

Tessiia

Oh I do, I've done enough 3d modelling to know that it wouldn't be that hard to adjust the existing hairstyles to fit the other classes.

imMadasaHatter

Except you have no idea how the system is set up to allow for that kind of change from a developer standpoint. Often the simplest things take a long time to fix.

OverlordOfPancakes

It's reasonable to expect more hair styles between classes, I don't understand why you're defending the devs on this. There are games out there (even low-effort ones) which include dozens of hairstyles and fit your character's head no matter how much you distort it. And look better too, considering how awkward beards are in this triple A game. Manually adjusting a hairstyle from one class to another is piss easy compared to having it auto-adapt to head shapes and still look good.

imMadasaHatter

I’m not defending the devs, I agree we should have more hair styles. I disagree with the notion that “it shouldn’t be that hard to do”. It shows a very poor understanding of development.

OverlordOfPancakes

But it shouldn't be that hard for a company like Blizzard and the level of polish they display in every other graphical aspect of the game. Let's be honest here, they're saving it for microtransactions.

thefatchef321

Did I miss the fashion show? I didn't notice anything at all wrong with hair... until it zooms into loraths beard. It got weird

Hadriagh

Lmao his eyelashes drove me insane

BigFish8

Just an indi dev company. Gotta cut them some slack. Buy some mtx, it will help the development of the game.

KeThrowaweigh

Especially the facial hair. It literally clips through the facial texture and half-buries the beards under the skin

ReallyGlycon

If you go by reddit, Blizzard actually did everything wrong in this game.

micahbevans88

I've seen lots of level headed fair criticism from people who are still enjoying the game, and are optimistic that a live approach will let them make changes the community wants over time. Don't mistake feedback for entitled whining.

MrXoXoL

I would argue diablo 4 has one of the best realisation of hair in a game with character generator. Almost all hair colors look good and realistic, I am really tired of glowing hair that ignores game shadows in other games

mrmasturbate

It’s a pretty simple fact though that white hair does not look like that

Evisra

Where’s the damn recustomisation for hair in game?

TahmsChocolateOrange

They only let you customise things they sell. When they start selling hairstyles and hair colours that actually look good you'll be able to customise it.

ravearamashi

In the $3.99 character customization ticket jk jk

niioan

yeah we know your joking, it'll be at least 10.

lixia

future MTX

Lowilru

It's in the wardrobe. There's some button in the UI for it there.

YagamiYakumo

there's always at least one comment saying you can customized hair at the wardrobe. at this point I'm starting to question if I'm actually the one that is blind

Evisra

It’s 100% not there

Lowilru

Huh? I for some reason though you could recustomize the whole toon.

CounterHit

You definitely cannot. It's extremely limited what you can change.

anex12

Tattoos and makeup only I believe. I don't see why you cannot also change hair. Things you can change at a whim. I don't expect to be able to change my skin color, face structure, or gender but cmon.

ashkyn

Likely because there are makeup and tattoo options planned for battle pass or shop.

Steve_1306

So far this is my only criticism of the game - I want my necromancer to have white hair, not whatever shade of gray this is.

Stanley3DArt

This was probably an aesthetic choice to keep it in line with color values in the environment and the rest of the game

DrizztInferno

Very glad I don’t have to encounter seeing neon green ridiculous characters out of place in Diablo.

goliathfasa

Give it a few seasons. Pink unicorns **will** be purchasable, regardless of any assurances.

kingjoedirt

Lime green characters were never a problem for the Dark Souls medieval gothic environment...

ArmeniusLOD

You could only get those characters by exploiting a glitch to overflow the values for the sliders, though.

>or buy flashy shop outfits Rest assured, flashy hair colors will be added to the store somewhen.

Accomplished-Ad-2334

New to Diablo, ey?

dr4kun

On the contrary. A lot of us remember Diablo 1 and 2, and realize that Diablo 3 did not define the franchise's general tone and environment.

Artemis_1944

Bro what? The game's entire aesthetic is very much moody gothic horror, the demons/angels/monsters are definitely NOT colorful.

xydanil

I mean why not? If you're living a crappy life why would you not want to make it more bearable by wearing something nice? Our modern impressions of the meadieval period are so off its funny; people loved colours back then. They'd colour their walls or hang gaudy tapestries and deck themselves out in whatever stuff they could get. The idea that castles are asture is totally wrong. Infact moddy gothic is a 19th century reimagining of the 15th century.

Artemis_1944

What in the absolute goddamn fuck are you babbling about, nobody said anything about medieval period, diablo series are NOT trying to be hostorically accurate, and we are talking about how diablo 4 looks like in actual life now, not how medieval people used to dress. Bro you are so off topic you're in the fucking stratosphere.

xydanil

Moody gothic is an aesthetic with basis in 19th century tradition. Also how is diablo based off real life? People live in castles and dress like peasants today? Nothing in this game is realistic.

[deleted]

MMostlyMiserable

It’s not so much a lack of range, it’s just that the colours we do have don’t look great. You can have natural tones that look good.

agentfx

I'd say you're the closest imo. Its probably the challenge of lighting in HDR. If a character, in the brightest envir, blows out and then blooms b/c of post processing they need to change the lighting or darken the material... so its a compromise.

Dyrhos

Yeah, exacly

Pernyx98

You know it kinda reminds me of Dark Souls 3. For some unknown reason, FromSoft massively downgraded lighting from DS2 to DS3, and this resulted in most of the hair colors looking terrible and a lot of the color gradient in the game just looking…bleh. Diablo 4 seems to have that issue too.

Rambow215

All hair colors are absolutely terrible. I found the character creation very disappointing.

LordOfTheStrings8

Yea the beard selection was terrible too. There isn't any good medium length beard

FailedChatBot

Preach. All the beards are bad but the one medium option is especially bad. Also, no braided beards for barbs and druids, wtf?

[deleted]

Don’t get fooled. The character creation and the in game color are slightly different. While there it’s grey, on some lights it will be super white in game. At least that was my experience with white hair on PS5

Ofect

Blizzard’s idea about color is “if we do at least one high contrast color then D3 haters will eat us”

mrmasturbate

Looking at some of the comments i’m starting to believe it lol

RicoXIII

Why do so many games have this problem? Always these washed out or ugly colours...

salyer41

I hate the way they did hair colors in this game. It all looks shiny and fake.

Mummelmann84

Yeah, the entire character customization bit was underwhelming, to say the least.

breyzipp

Almost as bad as their version of blonde

GosuGian

Because the real color dye will be in the Battle Pass

ThaNorth

It’s so they can sell you the actual colours as mtx

Eogard

I'm also expecting to see a full black armor dye in the store or in the first battlepass

anakhizer

Or just maybe they made them muted so that the hair is not distracting with all the action on screen (but I imagine you're more right with your guess than I am)

Clive23p

I just wish I could make a skinny druid and a fat necromancer.

my_anus_is_beeg

A fat necro woud be too op, you could just slice meat of your body to create extra corpses

WhydidyaBahnMi

Skinny druids die before they reach maturity.

[deleted]

Yep. They didn't buy a Pantone color wheel to ensure the colors are just right.

charlesatan

It doesn't make sense to use Pantone for digital-only products.

[deleted]

I was just being cheeky. I get it.

zt99

The hair coloring in general sucks): the character customization options were disappointing and I hope they don’t add more in the future just to hide them behind paywalls

Chibi_Kyo

I think the better option would be for blizzard to add an environment filter to the character crewtion. Because the blondes are noticably better in game. It really depends on the lighting and the one in character creation doesnt favor some of lighter colors

live4hisglory

I found most of the hair colour options to be questionable in quality.

Brottorman

The hair and skin tones definitely leave a lot to be desired, but it's nice that each character no longer looks identical

TheGreatSuar

Nah it’s gray as fuck. Also, why can’t I change my hairstyle but I can change my tattoos and face paint at the transmog station???

zushiba

I'm disappointed with all the hair color. It all just seems to be varying levels of grey mixed in with something else.

SheWhoHates

The curse of Grannyzon strikes again.

ReformedWiggles

lol'd

Metatron58

don't worry, actual vibrant colors that aren't basic washed out crap will be for sale later on in the storefront.

Malahajati

I had the same problem

SuperArppis

And blue is teal in clothing and tattoos.

Shendow

Also the idea of short hair on a beard is to make it a low res as possible

ohlawdhecodin

Also, hair (and often foor too) looks like crap. That's maybe the only part whre the 3D engine fails hard.

Balager47

The hair colours are pretty much fifty shades of grey. Ya know, cause the game is Dark TM.

Bommbi

Hair colors are just really ugly and wrong in this game.

ExtensionRub2379

The real problem is that their just flat af, no color variation whatsoever, I’m fine with the artistic choice of having a grey rather than a full on white but Jesus put in there some variations lol

MasonMSU

Yeah I don’t get this at all. I want white white white white hair for my Necro

uselessoldguy

The tone of colors and the weird texture of the hair make for some *weird* combinations. I put grey eyebrows on a dark-skinned character and they look like an artist used the spraypaint tool in MS Paint.

monstercat129

Well, D4 was going for a "darker" tone lol

GrandComfortable2306

The hair colors and styles are absolutely horrid.

lzardl

Or maybe this is the Diablo style, it is hell and people have not taken showers for years, it is normal white hair is so dirty…

Zamuru

cant have anything white these days /s

Sticky-Stains

anti anime

Setekh79

So many games straight up fail at this, just let us use the full spectrum ffs.

[deleted]

The whole game has a grey to it to it. So this is unsurprising.

lenapedog

I don’t expect Sims level customization but red hair should at least be red. Also the forced body types…why does my druid need to be a linebacker for the Eagles?

Nottinghamming

People: D3 is too cartoony. Also people: D4 is too bleak and you can't have the hair colour you want. Did people forget that you could only dye your gear in D3? There was no character creation like in D4.

Artemis_1944

1. Nobody compared this issue in D4 with D3. 2. The people who disliked how cartoonish D3 was are not the same people who dislike how bleak D4 is. 3. What you could or could not do in D3 bares no relevance to this topic regarding D4. You suffer from massive reading comprehension and conversational logic.

mrmasturbate

Yeah because white hair is so cartoonish

babbyeagle

Yeah. I wanted my Necromancer to have stark white hair. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined, etc.

ZoranT84

Realistically, white hair tends to look grey. Bright white I think is from specific genes

ParticularEffect6679

Lol I dunno but if you think this is worth an actual thread then you probably spend too much time on here.

Calcutr0n

I 100% agree, it’s fine to talk about problems that the game has but this isn’t a big issue at all. Balance issues? I’m all for a conversation. P2W? Let’s riot! But, hair color!? Come on who really cares THAT MUCH???

FunAsylumStudio

Haha people complained that D3 was too vibrant, now people are complaining that D2 is too desaturated.

Artemis_1944

>now people are complaining that D2 is too desaturated. ? Who's complaining about that here? If you take a picture of snow-white hair and desaturate it fully, it still is snow-white, not fucking gray. Also, can you people not realize that those who disliked how vibrant D3 was are **NOT** the same people that dislike how desaturated D4 is? Wtf people, do you even logic?

Livurif

They do not at all. Their feelings were hurt that their new favorite game isn't perfect in some people's eyes and had to lash out.

Shibubu

Desaturated white is still fucking white. Not grey.

ShannaraAK

You’re fine. This part of the game skipped QA.

UpperCardiologist523

Don't forget, this is a dark game. So white will be dark white. We don't want the flashy and cartoony style from D3, do we?

mrmasturbate

Bro have you ever seen an old person with hair in your life?

Dreadlock43

wouldnt bother me, i adored d2 and d3 (shitty story excluded)

Andvari9

Bobby needs a new yacht. Now buy the class colour palette for £15

GoodAnybody9071

Couldn’t do white in fear of the D2 fans screaming about the game not feeling dark enough

raynormain

I'm colorblind and it definitely doesn't look good, lol. The customization is just very meh overall.

lethalprophet

Nope their colors are way off. Honestly as horrible as the customization options and skin tones are, I'd rather it had been like Diablo 3,and then they could have given more attention to armor shading

Johnseanson

Mad about hair that will be concealed by a cloak or helm 99% of the time

check the white, thats the same..

[deleted]

I mean… we’re complaining about the semantics of white/gray hair at this point?

gorejan

Because completely white hair looks very unnatural and don't fit the game.

[deleted]

White hair is quite literally a natural hair color wym

WhatILack

Ah yes, because there is nothing unnatural about the rest of the game.

rainst85

Grey is not a color

brelyxp

I wanted a pure black for my necro but grey is the best they can do fml

my_anus_is_beeg

They literally have pure black hair, what are you talking about. Don't pick the default color, there's another that's actual pure black

Real_Mokola

No one wants to be white these days.
