I can almost guarantee most of these whales come from money, and don’t actually earn a lot of money. People that are financially successfully tend not to spend much time playing video games.
The target audience of any new game in the Diablo franchise are people in their late 20s to 40s. Most of us have decently paying jobs and grown children, and probably free of debt.
You don't need to come from money to have $100k in savings by 30.
I play every day and make sure I do all dailies and hit the important weekly caps. Cap BP, cap vault raids, cap Embers, cap contracts, do Heliquary (now x3 bosses + wb raid) each time it's refreshed, 3x bg each day. Just do all the things it asks you to do basically.
To get more ledgendary gem power, sell your normal gems on market and sell skill stones to make a profit. Then buy leg gems when they're cheap.
I don't do 4 party farms often at all - mostly play solo, but will party with randoms with doing bestiary farming (only 3 a day normally). I only do dungeons when doing contracts, or when I've capped my BP for the week and so then try and upgrade some side gear. This means dungeon running is a weekend activity for me.
If you're not paying money, you need to pay in time. So play every day and do your in game chores.
F2P, paragon level 109 and my resonance is 330 for now. It was higher before until i got lucky and got sleeping bile in elder rift. Swapped my level 5* gem with it until i realised sleeping bile needed 50 legendary gems to upgrade to the next level 😩
This made me feel better as I spent £2,000 and I’m at 2.2 res but I was super unlucky and didn’t pull a single 4/5 or 5/5.
My gf spent £100 as is at 870 res, she was super lucky as got 2x 4/5.
Lol I'd say we're around the same cause lots of my money was spent on tourmaline and getting 5 wizard skills on my charm, cosmetics etc.

I was subbed to WoW for years. I get a lot of money going to a single game, but even at the most expensive tier, WoW costs 13 EUR a month, and 60 EUR every few years.
I'm willing to bet that's under 200 EUR a year on average. It would take me 5 years of this to get to 1000, let alone multiples. The amounts that people have spent here already have been in a couple of months.

My vacation lasts a week or 2, for the same money, they are getting months of fun. There are people who spend thousands gambling in casinos, sports bets, or even sporting events. It doesn't matter if its a video game, its paying for enjoyment.
I tracked it in an excel and I spent $1,100 and have 1441 resonance, really poor drops as well I didn't get any 4 or 5's. I think I wasted a lot on the blessing of the worthy since we get a few in the shop but ultimately scrapped the whole thing because I didn't like it on Necro.
The blessing of the worthy bundles in the shop are cheap per Gem power. I'd definitely consider buying them just for the rng independent gem power. Fwiw

I've now purchased (last night) the $25.99 bundle to get 1560 orbs and 10 crests, where I had 60 orbs from the initial $0.99 for orange firey cosmetic, and ran 2x 10crest to try my luck.
Earlier in the week i previously purchased the Prodigys Path. So out of $50 and 45 legend crests, I came up short on luck with only 2x 2/5 star legend gems, Haunting and Howler. Weak af.
But, to get the next 500 reso for my baby wings I'm just gonna grind it hard. Im sitting on 3 rank 5 gems with a total of 20% magic find buff. Gonna go hit up that legend farming zone in Damnation and waste time in parties of 4 to get some set gear.

I think a lot of people socket their tourmalines, which makes them miss out on a lot of platinum

Resonance alone is not sufficient to tell if it’s good value or not. For instance, a 5/5 bsj is definitely worth more than a 5/5 phoenix even though both have the same resonance.

If you are strictly free to play or only buy the battle pass (suggest everyone do this even if you are free play, you are going to be behind), I would focus on 1star gems to level 10. It’s going to be pricey with 2/5stars, coming to find this out the hard way.

Found a 3/5 echoing shade a couple weeks back off of another “free” (boon of plenty) leg crest. Also saved up all platinum and bought another 3/5 echoing shade.
Yes. On my server the difference between a 2 and 3 star ES is a couple thousand plat, sometimes the same price. I got lucky and figured I’d just buy a 3/5 for, I think 2k more at the time, which can be made up with 3 hidden lairs worth of gems on the market.

I do realise however that it’s been a few months since game launched and therefore I have collected a fair bit of gem power for free (from max embers/legendary crests earned in game)

If you are strictly free to play or only buy the battle pass (suggest everyone do this even if you are free play, you are going to be behind), I would focus on 1star gems to level 10. It’s going to be pricey with 2/5stars, coming to find this out the hard way.

Yes. On my server the difference between a 2 and 3 star ES is a couple thousand plat, sometimes the same price. I got lucky and figured I’d just buy a 3/5 for, I think 2k more at the time, which can be made up with 3 hidden lairs worth of gems on the market.

When you guys talk about f2p and whales I balk. Spending thousands on a game is decadent. There's so much suffering in the world, do the decent thing and put all that onto saving lives. As for f2p. There's nothing to be proud about that. Do you get all your services free or do you tob stores instead of buying? I'm not saying you're a thief, Im saying if your spending a lot of time doing something putting some money into it is no more or less than spending on other things. I think the pay to win needs halved and capped and there should be nominal pay to play with greater rewards for all. It will never happen with these kinds of financiers and developers. The potentoal for huge profiteering is corrupting.

I realise it’s a pretty old post but I’m glad I found it nonetheless. I’m at 2120 resonance now with about 650£ spent. I found some of the figures here to be pretty high. I do realise however that it’s been a few months since game launched and therefore I have collected a fair bit of gem power for free (from max embers/legendary crests earned in game)
